Have I accurately attributed these images?

[edit]

Hi, I inadvertently uploaded these images incorrectly to Wikimedia. The process of creating articles about these people." (I'm new here, and learning)", which is why the images were nominated for deletion. I think I have fixed the problem/s, but I'd be grateful if someone could take a look at them to see if I've attributed them properly:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MarekKowalkiewicz.jpg#%7B%7Bint%3Afiledesc%7D%7D

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nicole_Sahin.png#%7B%7Bint%3Afiledesc%7D%7D

For context, the images were taken by a professional photographer on their behalf, and they have been granted permission to share them on Wikimedia by the photographer. The image were then forward to me to upload. I'd be grateful if someone could let me know if I'm doing things the right/wrong way. Cheers, and thank you.– [←[User:KWriteReturn|KWriteReturn]→] –(talk) 03:26, 22 May 2024 (UTC) @KWriteReturn: [reply]

  1. You still have them marked as "own work", but you've now listed someone else as the photographer. That makes no sense.
  2. "the images were taken by a professional photographer on their behalf": on whose behalf?
  3. Permission "to share them on Wikimedia" is, sad to say, useless, at least for Commons. Per COM:L, Commons accepts only files that are either in the public domain (these pretty clearly aren't) or where the copyright-holder has explicitly granted a "free license" such as a CC-BY or CC-BY-SA license. Those aren't the only acceptable free licenses, but the license must allow for commercial use (which may, however, be limited by personality rights, trademark, or other non-copyright restrictions) and for the creation of derivative works.
On last, this permission "to share them on Wikimedia" falls short on two counts. (1) There is no explicit license allowing commercial use and derivative works and (2) we have only your word for someone else granting a license.
Other than the "own work" issue (which you can correct by accurately stating the source), the rest of this can be addressed by either of the following two approaches:
  1. Presuming the photographer is the copyright-holder, they can indicate the grant of license on any public-facing web page clearly under their own control (e.g. a website for their photography business; a Flickr page or something similar -- if they have a Flickr account, Flickr is well set up to allow a declaration of any of several different CC licenses; a publicly visible social media post; etc.) Basically, they can post the image, indicate that they are the photographer, and grant the permission. Sometimes it is useful for this purpose to create a page on a website that might even have no incoming links on the website, but where they provide the URL, and the domain is clearly under their control.
  2. The copyright-holder can send an overt declaration of a particular license as explained at COM:VRT. If the copyright-holder is someone other than the photographer, the VRT will also typically need a copy of the document that transferred copyright.
I know this is a little complicated, but publishing a third party's work legally is inherently complicated. - Jmabel ! talk 05:29, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for taking the time to help me, @Jmabel; I really appreciate it. I have updated the sources of both photos, and have asked both photographers to complete the VRT Release Generator. I believe that Marvin Fox has already completed this for Marek Kowalkiewicz's image. Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do. Once again, thank you! Wrong photo of me on my Wikipedia page - Julie Davis

Incorrect on rights for certain images; unsure how to proceed

[edit]

A recent perusal of my uploads made me realize some rights issues with some photos.

So, for context, John Prentice is my step-grandfather, and I uploaded the following images, but did not have the rights to them:

Not fully understanding copyright at the time, knowing I had my grandmother's permission to upload them, and considering I had "taken" the photos that were being uploaded (i.e. I had "scanned" them in with my phone), I thought this was okay. I now recognize that this was not correct, however. I don't think there is any way to verify her permission (she's not good with technology), so my inclination was to request they all be deleted (instead of trying to verify her permission), but I wasn't sure.

On top of this, I uploaded File:Robert Nemanich 2023.jpg on behalf of someone else; I had permission in this case, as well (I tried convincing the actual photographer to upload it themselves, but they asked me to do it for them, and for reasons I can't get into, a different set of issues would have arisen had I done the VRT verification route, so I thought, eh, no big deal), but I definitely should have known better. I can maybe see if in the future I can get the person to upload on Flickr or something so I can share it, but my main concern now is telling the truth and making it right.

I apologize for these mistakes. I've genuinely enjoyed contributing to Wikimedia these past many months, and I am incredibly sorry that I let the community down with my actions. My intent was always in good faith, but mistakes were made, nonetheless. I hope this can be rectified as soon as possible, in as best a way as possible, and that I can still contribute. Again, I am very sorry.

Thank you,
Packer1028 (talk) 09:25, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Packer1028: Hi, and welcome. Please try to get them to comply with VRT, perhaps even by printing out a copy of COM:CONSENT or using our Interactive Release Generator for each of them, having them sign, and scanning the results.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:37, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Packer1028: Hi, For the photos showing John Prentice, the first thing is to determine the photographer(s) and the copyright owner(s). The photos look like family photos but not like self-portraits by John Prentice. If your grandmother is the photographer or acquired the copyrights, she could, as Jeff G. suggests, sign an equivalent paper and you can send a copy to VRT. It may be prudent to first ask at the VRT noticeboard if they accept. If your grandmother is not the photographer or the copyright owner, she cannot issue a license. If other copyright owner(s) is (are) known, the solution can be to request a free license from them. If the photos can be kept, please correct the author, source and date statements in the description pages and remove the self template from the licenses. For the photo showing Robert Nemanich, if it is impossible in any way to get the copyright owner to validate the potential license, then the file should probably be nominated for deletion. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:26, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you all for your help. I'll get on this ASAP. 99% certain my grandmother was the photographer for all JP photos. Try to see if I can salvage the other one. Packer1028 (talk) 05:27, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Has it something to do with the transcode status? The first four in the table are not ready yet. Can I restart that process or is that a bad idea? (I don't know the implications.) Ennomien (talk) 21:07, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ennomien: Hi, and welcome. When I got to that page, the first four transcodes were "Not ready" and had been "Added to Job queue 60 days, 22 hours, 47 minutes and 13 seconds ago". My guess is that the transcoding jobs died, but not gracefully. I just reset them for you; two are started, and two were added to the job queue.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:19, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Jeff G., that solved it! Ennomien (talk) 15:21, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ennomien: You're welcome! All four have now finished. Please try to watch the video again. The biggest one took 1 min 38 s; there's no way a transcode should take 60 days.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:24, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just did that. The video was not that important to me (although it was interesting), it was more the fact that it didn't play for me and probably also not for others. Ennomien (talk) 15:30, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So, someone has added content to Category:Sheeps and moved a lot of pages into it or its subcategories. I've tried to revert some of the damage, but what I can do is limited because my IP is blocked here though not on Wikipedia (I use Apple's Private Relay service) and HotCat doesn't seem to work for me any more. Google Translate from Hungarian: "If we want to delete an already uploaded file or change its name, where and how can we do it?" - Jmabel ! talk 17:55, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hgk movar: If you want to delete your own recent upload (uploaded in the last seven days), see Template:My bad upload. This will almost always be granted.
If you want to delete your older upload, you have to nominate it for deletion, just as if it had been uploaded by anyone else.
If you want to change a filename, use the "move" tab above the image. If you have Filemover privileges, this will actually let you move it; if not, it will help you fill out a form for a move request. Please note that because filename stability is important, except for very recent uploads we allow only a very limited set of reasons for moving a file. @Jd101991: since I have no idea what that looks like, and you haven't provided a link, I can't really give you a good answer. However, keep in mind that in almost every country in the world, at least since 1989 (and for many of them long before that), if something can be copyrighted then it is copyrighted by default. So unless this is something so simple that it cannot be copyrighted, it almost certainly is copyrighted, and unless the copyright-holder has granted a free license, we can't accept it here. - Jmabel ! talk 06:06, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

assignment of copyrights

[edit]

A photographer assigns the copyrights of a certain collection of their photos to a non-profit. Can the non-profit upload some of the assigned photos to wikipedia without the permission of the photographer? BBTIarchival (talk) 11:37, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@BBTIarchival: Yes, but we will need a proof of copyright ownership by the organization. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Copyright transfers can only be in writing. Yann (talk) 14:06, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In general, if the non-profit in question is well-enough known (something like Oxfam, or Mercy Corps, or a major symphony orchestra) and if they have claimed copyright and granted a license on their own site, we would usually assume good faith. But, otherwise, it is almost always a good idea to go through VRT to clarify that the copyrights were assigned (copy of assignment document) and that the uploader represents the non-profit (send email to VRT from the non-profit's domain, be able to respond to email there). - Jmabel ! talk 18:30, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Frustrating

Today I uploaded a picture to Wikimedia Commons I took of myself in 1983 using a camera with a self-timer. The link: File:Helmut Sinor (1983).jpg

Now I received a message that something is still not correct. I can't get my head around it any more. Whatever I do, there's always something to criticize. Under https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Helmut_Sinor_(1983).jpg it currently says:

{{No source since|month=May|day=30|year=2024}}

Kind regards, Helmut Sinor (User: Chinnichap) Chinnichap (talk) 14:48, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Chinnichap: Hi, Some users nominate for speedy deletion photos that might or might not be self-portraits. In the page of the file, you can click on the button "Challenge speedy deletion". That will create a normal deletion discussion and you can tell the reason for why the photo can be kept. There is a similar situation with the 2018 photo and it is more urgent because the speedy deletion tag has been there for a longer time. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:52, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The photo from 2018 was taken by my sister. If it gets deleted now, that's not so tragic. For now, I would like to bring the picture from 1983 through the thicket of regulations. That has priority now. As I'm in hospital next week, I can only take care of it until Sunday. After that, I won't be able to do anything to get the photo from 1983 accepted until June 10. Chinnichap (talk) 07:50, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Chinnichap: I've taken the first step for you. You can follow up at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Helmut Sinor (1983).jpg. Question: any connection to Chinn & Chapman? If not, that user name may be a problem. I believe it's probably a trademarked name. - Jmabel ! talk 18:37, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I created this username years ago to familiarize myself a little with the possibilities. It was simply the first username that spontaneously came to mind. At that time, I had no intention of ever contributing to Wikipedia myself. If the problems are due to that, I could certainly change the username.
Should I do this in the current situation or will it only make things more complicated? Chinnichap (talk) 07:42, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry we've ended up having this conversation in two places, but I would suggest you just stop using the Chinnichap account and stick to the one under your own name. - Jmabel ! talk 19:11, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Use of images

[edit]

Today I received (after asking of course) professional pictures of the person I wanted to write an article about. Now the person gave me permission to upload it on Wikipedia, but im not sure if he gave permission to upload it Wikimedia and make it available to everyone. What can I do in this case? Thank you BearThatRun (talk) 18:41, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@BearThatRun: first, you need to find out who owns the copyright for the images. Typically that will not be the subject of the photo, unless it is a selfie: it will be the photographer. Assuming the copyright has not been transferred, and the photogrpapher still holds the copyright, there are basically two ways to go:
  • The copyright-holder can post the image on a web page clearly under their control (their own web site, a public-facing social media post, their Flickr account, etc.) and indicate an appropriate free license that they are offering (I'd recommend either CC-BY 4.0 or CC-BY-SA 4.0). They can indicate a required attribution if they like, but the license they offer must allow (1) commercial reuse and (2) derivative works. Then anyone can cite that page for source/permission and upload the file to Commons.
  • The copyright-holder can go through the process described at COM:VRT to send an email granting a free license (again, I'd recommend either CC-BY 4.0 or CC-BY-SA 4.0).
If the copyright has been transferred, then really only the second option is viable, because they will need to provide a copy of the document that transferred copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 03:16, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize for the late reply, thank you so much for the help! I will inform myself with the participant of the photo and ask if he has the rights BearThatRun (talk) 16:27, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, is there a way to show more than 200 files on a category? Ideally, is there a way to show all files on a category? RodRabelo7 (talk) 19:41, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All I'm aware of is (1) open it in VFC; (2) keep loading 100 at a time by going to the bottom; (3) ignore that VFC is supposed to be about making changes in the files: you can click on any that you want to see in a tab of its own. - Jmabel ! talk 03:21, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Actor Image

[edit]

While editing the article of American actor Brandon Butler I noticed his page didn't have an image. As such I found one from his Instagram profile that was not from any photoshoot. Instated it was a photo of himself post on his public profile thanking his followers for birthday wishes. I choose this image because it was clear from the context that it wasn't part of someone else's work and shared public. However it was recently flagged for deletion an non-compliant with copyright.

Is this not acceptable? If not could you give me an example of an image I can use? If it is what licensing should I add? John's Edits (talk) 13:20, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@John's Edits: it certainly wouldn't be in the public domain. What basis do you have to believe it would have a free license? - Jmabel ! talk 19:14, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel, based on the context of the post and the others on the actor's account. When his posts are the result of photoshoots the photographer is tagged. In the case I select it was clearly a photo taken for personal used that was shared to all followers. I'm new to uploading photos so my interpretation may very well be wrong.
To avoid making the same mistake again could you give me examples of appropriate images I could use? I thought of some from premiers, but they might be copyrighted, even if they don't have the watermarks. John's Edits (talk) 09:12, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@John's Edits: Under the Berne Convention, signed by all but a handful of countries in the world, anything eligible for copyright is copyrighted by default. Unless there is an explicit statement of an appropriate free license, pretty much everything from the last 35 years is copyrighted, as is a good deal of content from the last 120 years (and in a handful of cases even longer). There are many living people for whom there is no available free-licensed images; that is one of the reasons many of us go out and take such photos. - Jmabel ! talk 14:54, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Legit files from a blacklisted Flickr account

[edit]

I uploaded two portraits with cc-by-2.0 license from Flickr (depicting a former Microsoft employee, who is now a famous author in Sweden) but the reviewer bot automatically rejected them because the account of the original uploader on Flickr, Microsoft Sweden, is blacklisted for "Copyrighted logos and stock images of Microsoft products." I think these files are legit, because the person had worked for the company and the files are pretty high quality. Is there any way that they can be acceptable? Thank you, HeminKurdistan (talk) 16:16, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is the question of trust. Ruslik (talk) 20:13, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Upload difficulty.

Hello, I supposedly uploaded 11 images few hours ago but these are not showing on the uploads page. I don't know what is wrong. When I tried to upload again an error occurred as seems that it was a duplicate. Can you please help? Noport (talk) 20:59, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Noport: Could you check Special:ListFiles/Noport again? Assuming you are talking about the "Baħrija" files, they are there. - Jmabel ! talk 05:22, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. Yes I can see the images on the Special: ListFiles/Noport but I cannot see them on the front page of Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Malta with the other 106 participating images. Can my images be moved there? Are my images in contest for the competition while they are on the Special: ListFiles? Thanks again for your help. Noport (talk) 06:44, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just to be clear before assuming anything "went wrong": did you upload with https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UploadWizard&campaign=wle-mt or with the regular Upload Wizard? If you did the former and your files didn't show up, you should let them know at Commons talk:Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Malta. If you did the latter, then of course nothing attached them to the contest.
Looking at a typical file in Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Malta, to add your image to that retroactively, it looks like you should add {{Wiki Loves Earth 2024|mt}} between the license section and the categories. - Jmabel ! talk 17:57, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Zanahary: (1) can you describe the crop you want to do? (2) when you say "it's too big," what approach did you try and how did it fail? - Jmabel ! talk 05:26, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just cropping out the color test bar. I tried to do it using the form loaded when I click “upload a new version of this file”, whose limit is, I believe, 100MB. Zanahary (talk) 15:26, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zanahary: Well, you certainly shouldn't have been using “upload a new version of this file”. This is not an appropriate overwrite. You should be uploading under a distinct filename, and linking them with {{Derivative works}} / {{Derived from}} in the "other versions" section of {{Information}}. Try that, and if it still doesn't work for you, then I'll take a shot at it myself. - Jmabel ! talk 18:01, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ooligan: I agree with the other comments that it is a very poor choice and uploaders should avoid using them, but to answer your precise question I have not found a Commons policy forbidding their use. Apparently, the file naming policy of Commons does not forbid it. And the renaming policy does not seem to allow renaming for that reason. The policy of the English-language Wikipedia forbids it in the titles of articles, but it's not Commons. Notifying User:WomanON, the uploader of your example. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:15, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I left an explicit link to this discussion on their talkpage in case they don't get the ping. DMacks (talk) 16:55, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The last bullet-point of Commons:File naming#Language-specific guidelines advises to avoid unicode symbols, for several technical and practical reasons. That's only a proposed guideline, but it is linked from several other policy and guideline pages and other sets of advice and templates. DMacks (talk) 16:43, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at this uploader's files in general, I would say many fail the fundamental file-naming standard of being descriptive of the image. For example, any guesses what, even in general, File:Last_option_in_the_House_😂.jpg might be before clicking? And even after looking closely at the full description and image itself, any idea what in particular those specific components are? DMacks (talk) 16:48, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

World of Warcraft Map

[edit]

Hi my name is penelope. I was looking at a coloring-page-like map of azeroth from world of warcraft and noticed that it was missing the dragon isles. I have been looking at other pictures hoping to find a similar one but updated with the dragon isles and found nothing. I have a map of azeroth on my wall that I am working on and I am hoping to add the dragon isles to it. I don't need each individiual zone; I just want a matching map of the dragon isles that looks like a coloring page. I only need the outline of the island,I don't want the borders of each zone already drawn since I am planning to add them myself. I apologize if this is not the correct area to write this note; the help options I looked at were very confusing. If you cannot help me create a picture like this, i'd very much appreciate it if you could reccommend another website that might be able to help me. Thank you and have a great day! Modifica figura

[edit]

Glicitra (talk) 10:58, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I assume this is about File:Levodopa3D.PNG, since the other image at the top of it:L-DOPA is the same as the corresponding image in en-wiki.

Uploading studio photos that my grandmother left to me (dates: 1920-1960) & family photos she took

[edit]

I inherited photos from my grandmother and mother that were taken between 1920-1980. The photos prior to 1953 were portraits taken at studios that are no longer existant. The photographers, too, are deceased. I also have photos taken by my mother and grandmother. They all have historical value for the fashions they wore which are very clear and representative of the eras in which the photos were taken. They also show in the background buildings and neighborhoods that were part of the Italian-American community in Brooklyn, NY and Wilmerding, PA during the same period (1920-1980).

The photos are of my grandmother, grandfather, mother and father. Everyone is deceased. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emilyannfrances (talk • contribs) 16:04, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Since these photos belong to me I am willing to share them for knowledge and educational reasons. But how do I attribute them. They are not my own work and everyone whether studio or person is deceased.

Please advise as I am not clear in who to attribute them to.

Thank you very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emilyannfrances (talk • contribs) 16:03, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Emilyannfrances: Hi, You can upload the photos that were taken by persons from whom you inherited the rights, for example if that is the case with your mother and your grandmother. The authorship of each photo is normally attributed to the person who took that photo, unless you want to keep their identities secret. If it's unclear which of them took a photo, you can explain that and name both. As copyright owner, you can license the photos with any free license of your choice, for example, but not necessarily, those listed in this category, unless a photo is in the public domain for some specific reason. The educational scope of some photos might be disputed, but that can be more easily evaluated after they are uploaded. You can probably not upload the studio portraits, unless you demonstrate that they are in the public domain for a specific reason or that you somehow acquired their copyrights. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:58, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply. The photographs were not used for media, just taken at the request of the customers. There are no copyright symbols. By the age of some of the photographers I researched as part of my local history, they are dead for over 70 years. The studios closed. As far as I can determine, no descendant carried on the business. And then I have portraits taken by an unknown photographer in my grandparent's apartment. I could attribute to unknown photographer, taken in Mrs. Serrapede's apartment. Emilyannfrances (talk) 18:16, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The studio photographs should be fine as long as there's no copyright notice on them. Although they are probably fine regardless. I think the educational value can be justified by the nature of them being historical studio photographs. There's a lot of information about the photographer, time period, and the history of photography in general from such works. Although like Asclepias says it's not like they can't be evaluated for educational value on a case-by-case basis after being uploaded. --Adamant1 (talk) 18:04, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I have checked some of the cardboard frames the photos came in. The studio name is on some. In which case I will credit the studio. Since these were in our community and some include the photographer's name I can check for date of death. To my knowledge the descendants moved on to other lines of business, but I'll check again. Most of the studios are closed long ago by end of 1950s. I think if I credit the studio then with an estimated date I'll be within conformance. No, there are no copyright marks on any of the photographer's labels or cardboard frames. 100.1.103.102 18:11, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Emilyannfrances: Under the pre-1979 U.S. copyright law, passing copies to your family probably counted as publication. If there was no copyright notice, then that is publication without notice, which at that time would have placed the images in the public domain.

File:Jorge Neri.jpg

I don't know if this is the right place for the application. Best regards Ángel Santamaría Fotografía (talk) 09:51, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ángel Santamaría Fotografía: Hi. I'm the uploader of the file. I have added the {{Low quality}} tag to the file's description, but from what I gather low quality by itself is not a reason for removal. I'll let more experienced editors to weigh on this, though. Kind regards, --NoonIcarus (talk) 14:48, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • See Commons:Deletion requests for proposing a photo be deleted. NoonIcarus is correct that poor quality is not by itself always a reason for deletion; other factors are also considered. For example, a poor quality photo of a very common thing which we have many good photos of would likely be deleted, but a poor quality photo of a notable person or important event could be kept if we don't have better free licensed alternatives. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:01, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The issue is about what "free use" means. As long as no explicit licence is given, there may be implicit restrictions. Is it OK to make derived works and share those? Can the photo be used commercially? Both are requirements on Wikimedia Commons. –LPfi (talk) 06:25, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, as specified in the template, "Works that are considered 'public records' but were not created by a state or municipal government agency may be copyrighted by their author". The EXIF of this file specifies "Author: Joshua Qualls, Copyright holder:www.joshuaqualls.com". That seems to mean that it is copyrighted by the author. However, the website of the author indicates that he is "serving as director of photography for the office of the governor [...]".
Secondly, the statement in the template applies to "records [...] held by the Massachusetts Archives". The photo is from 2023. Is it held by the Massachusetts Archives yet?
It is possible that the photo is not in the scope of the template. The precaution principle would suggest to not upload such files unless it can be convincingly proven that they meet the conditions of the template despite indications to the contrary.
This type of question is usually better asked on Commons:Village pump/Copyright. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:15, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

FYI-ping to uploader @Babegriev. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:24, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the ping. I'll digress to consensus if the community thinks this is copyvio, however I'll provide my rationale for upload. This photograph was taken by an employee of the Commonwealth while in the course of their official duties (namely the Governor's Press Office as part of the Executive branch). This was not a municipal agency, but the state government. The metadata claiming copyright does not supersede the doctrine of edict of government, however serves well for appropriate accreditation to the author. While the photographer could reserve copyright on works they took while outside the scope of their government duties, this is not the case here. The photograph was uploaded to the official flickr account of the Governor of Massachusetts, which is  – employing logic from Lindke v. Freed  – an official channel of government correspondence. This would make content uploaded to that account a public record of the Commonwealth. As to whether or not this specific branch of government can reserve copyright, the University of Massachusetts system proper does have the ability to copyright material under MA statute. The Governor's press office, on the other hand, has historically submitted content from previous administrations (example here) to the state archives. This indicates that such content is an edict of government and not copyrightable. Babegriev (talk) 03:45, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One more thing. This was not content submitted to a government agency by a private party, but was taken by an employee of the Commonwealth, and by extension, was created by the Commonwealth, rather than the attributed photographer. Thanks! Babegriev (talk) 03:48, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Are short filenames allowed?

[edit]

Just wanted to ask since there are some 1-character files out there along with a multitude of 2-character files. They should probably be moved to more descriptive names. I also have a list of 2-character files that is currently incomplete: User:0x16w/2charfiles 0x16w (talk) 14:57, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User:0x16w/1charfiles now exists for 1-character files. 0x16w (talk) 15:18, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to tell if a photo is copyrighted/if using it is allowed?

[edit]

I'm trying to update the photo on the Wikipedia article for Akhilesh Yadav, as the current one is severely outdated (it's from 2015). The new photo I'm trying to add (this one) is apparently owned by "ANI Photo" according to this article, but the photo isn't anywhere on ANI News's site that I can find. The photo has been used by many different news sites, not sure if that means it can be used on Wikipedia/in the Wikimedia Commons. What should I do? CalyxSage (talk) 15:38, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • In short, if you do not see an explicit free license at the web site source, or have some other verifiable reason to know it is free licensed, assume it is not free licensed and should not be uploaded to Commons. See COM:LICENSE for details. I see no reason at either of the links you gave to think the photo is free licensed. I don't know how to read Hindi, but I do see a clear copyright notice at the bottom of the second page linked. ANI is en:w:Asian News International a commercial news organization, who presumably holds the copyright of the image. Not free for Commons. Upload for mushrooms contest

I'm trying to figure out how to upload a pic for the mushroom contest. It says to click the camera to enter it, but clicking just takes me to another page, but no upload available. I did upload a photo to Wiki Commons, but not to the mushroom contest. RoseT48 (talk) 12:18, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

new article

[edit]

I wrote a short article for contribution to Wikipedia about the father of singer John Denver. His father was an important man in his own right, one of the USAF's prominent test pilots in the 1960s who set speed records. I have multiple citations to back the article up.

TV Series Poster

[edit]

I uploaded a poster of a TV series and it was removed for copyright.

I have looked at similar articles and they have similar posters but they were not removed.

How do I go about uploading the poster without getting a copyright violation? ChallengeFanatic (talk) 15:48, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@ChallengeFanatic: Are any of the similar photos here on Commons? If so, could you please link an example? - Jmabel ! talk 17:30, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ChallengeFanatic: Hi, and welcome. TV series posters are generally copyrighted with no free licenses, see COM:NETC. Most of those articles you mentioned have low-resolution posters that were uploaded to Wikipedia for Fair Use. Our stance on that on Commons is at COM:FAIR. Other stances are at en:WP:F, and for other projects m:nfc.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:49, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So I am edited the page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detective_Chinatown_(web_series). Which is directly linked to this movie series: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detective_Chinatown
Why is the movie able to use the poster and the TV show isn't? How is one fair use and the other isn't?
Thanks,
CF ChallengeFanatic (talk) 12:19, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ChallengeFanatic: the movie series uses en:template:Non-free use rationale poster at en:File:Detective Chinatown poster.jpeg, reduced in the second upload. Can you upload the series poster there with that same rationale?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:20, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply. I really do appreciate the help. I have reduced the size of the poster but I am new and I don't know where to upload the poster now.
I even have a traced .svg logo which could be used but I don't know how to upload without triggering some sort of warning.

@ChallengeFanatic: I told you twice to upload it there. What made you choose to upload it here? Please also use internal links like File:Detective Chinatown - Season 2 - Poster.jpg. To upload on English Wikipedia instead of here, please choose to "Upload a non-free file" from en:Wikipedia:File upload wizard or choose any option from the right column "Wikipedia" of the "Uploading media files" table there: "Files for upload process (recommended for new users)", "Plain form for local uploads (experienced users)", or "Old guided form".   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:26, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry. I didn't mean to ignore your advice. With en:Wikipedia:Upload I get the error that I am not confirmed with Upload a non-free file. And with en:Special:Upload I get a Permission error. So I was confused how to upload.
I think I am fully stuck now. ChallengeFanatic (talk) 14:31, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Picture Upload - My Original Work

[edit]

Hello, I'm an employee at a skateboard shop in Los Angeles, CA, and I'm trying to create a wiki page for Brooklyn Projects skate shop but wiki. is not allowing me to upload a photo that I took of the storefront, i.e., the cover photo for the page. I keep receiving the message that the photo cannot be verified as original - What can I do to make the upload happen? BrooklynProjects (talk) 18:59, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@BrooklynProjects: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user. Such uploads of png photos are not allowed at all. The following applies to each photo. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 19:17, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can I look up which categories I created recently?

[edit]

By coincidence, I have become some kind of frequent producer of new categories (no worries, they all make sense...). As I usually also fill them up with a decent number of files, the new categories are cumbersome to identify even on the same day in the mass of own contributions, let alone some days later. Question: Is there a tool or filter where I can control/see which categories I created? Pittigrilli (talk) 19:01, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Commerial magazine Logo's upload to Commons?

[edit]

Hi.

I started working on the article about Magia i Miecz in order to extend it. Working on that, I thought it would be neat to show the magazine logo in the infobox. I believe it would be fair use under American law and it is thus allowable (?). However, after reading the comic, I am not so sure.

Can somebody tell me if I can upload logo of a magazine in order to show it in the infobox in an article about said magazine?

Best wishes -- Kaworu1992 (talk) 23:15, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fair Use is not allowed on Commons. COM:L. Abzeronow (talk) 23:33, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading photos and dearth of online references

[edit]

I am trying to create an entry for my grandmother, who happens to be the first female engineer to graduate from Bolivia, back in 1944. Unfortunately there is zilch online about her, and because we live outside Bolivia we have very little access to information. What kind of references can we add in this case? Also, Wikipedia is rejecting my photo of her - a digital image of a long-ago family photograph. WHY?? Maya Iriondo (talk) 01:55, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Maya Iriondo: we can't really definitively answer questions about Wikipedia here on Wikimedia Commons. Ask on Wikipedia (en-wiki or es-wiki, I can't tell which you are talking about). In general, you may have a hard time doing this without good access to sources. For what it's worth, print sources are exactly as acceptable as online sources.
You indicate that you are writing about your own grandmother. That's not a problem here on Commons, but it is on Wikipedia. Please make sure you are familiar with the policies on conflicts of interest: en:WP:COI and es:WP:CDI. respectively.
When you say, "Wikipedia is rejecting my photo of her", could you be more specific as to what you tried to do and what error message you got? Have you read Commons:First steps, which guides you through the process of adding images here on Commons? - Jmabel ! talk 05:28, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I guess I am a Luddite, and can't understand how I arrived to the Commons while trying to find help setting up a Wikipedia entry.
About conflict of interest, I really don't know what to say. Can't be too conflicting to have an entry with somebody's bio. And I am doing it because, somehow, nobody ever thought about doing it. I'd rather leave it to someone else who is more Wikisavvy. Perhaps I should. Maya Iriondo (talk) 08:20, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Maya Iriondo: In your filter log, it can be seen that you triggered a "cross-wiki" filter when you tried to upload "File:LiliaSalgueiro.jpg" to Commons while you were on Wikipedia. You can try to upload the file when you are on Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 06:37, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Display problem with just-uploaded image.

[edit]

I just uploaded File:Galit, Panacot, Lumbay, and Scarborough Shoal.png. It is similar to File:Galit panacot lumbay.png but has a problem when displayed -- it displays as an inset in the top-left corner of a larger image field instead of filling out the field. What have I done wrong? Wtmitchell (talk) 03:42, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Wtmitchell: Looks fine to me. When you say it "has a problem when displayed" do you mean that it looks wrong on that file page, or when used on some other page? - Jmabel ! talk 05:30, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. After I had posted here I had uploaded a different version of the image -- snipped from the same chart but covering a larger area. That fixed the display problem at the cost of sacrificing layout similarity with another image I was contrasting it with in a WP article. I neglected to update this section here after I did that -- I apologize for that.
That is not clear; to clarify, see the images below the infobox in this WP article. The two images or interest are this one and the image just preceding it. Anyhow, the initial version of this image had the problem I described.
See what I characterized as a "display problem" here, using the initially uploaded image. That's the way it appeared in the WP article -- an inset in the upper-left corner of the display field. Wtmitchell (talk) 10:36, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
