Description
English: (see source) The present picture is almost certainly the study for the large version of Sir Galahad (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool) painted c.1865, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1870 and owned by the famous collector of Pre-Raphaelite pictures George Rae. In the catalogue of Rae's pictures, the study was accompanied by the following quotation from Tennyson's poem of the same title; "A gentle sound, an awful sight! Three angels bear the holy grail: With folded feet, in stoles of white, On sleeping wings they sail." The bridge depicted in the picture was based upon Ashness Bridge near Derwentwater.
