Title
Columbus Urban Homestead Lottery
Description
An unidentified man holds a picture of the house he won in the Columbus Urban Homestead Lottery. The lottery was held at the Riverfront Amphitheater on the west side of the Scioto River, between the Broad and Town Street Bridges. The lottery program was begun in 1975 by the Department of Development for a way to rehabilitate inner city neighborhoods. Lottery winners were sold a house for $1. In return, they agreed to rehabilitate the homes and live in them for at least four years before gaining a clear property title. The houses were purchased by the city from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.
