Summary[edit]

Description
English: Heraldic escutcheons on porch of Greenway Almshouses, Gold Street, Tiverton, Devon, built after 1517 by the Tiverton wool merchant John Greenway (d.1529). These are the arms of Henry Courtenay, 2nd Earl of Devon (1498–1539), of Tiverton Castle, then lord of the manor of Tiverton, created by King Henry VIII a Knight of the Garter in 1521 and Marquess of Exeter in 1525. His arms, showing de Redvers, Earl of Devon, quartering Courtenay (usually shown the other way around), are circumscribed by the Garter. The other escutcheon shows the royal arms of England, also circumscribed by the Garter. These appear to be the arms of King Henry VIII (1509-1547) who was his first cousin, Courtenay's mother having been Princess Catherine of York, a daughter of King Edward IV and sister of Elizabeth of York the mother of King Henry VIII.
