Summary[edit]

Description

This photo shows one of our Traffic officers monitoring CCTV screens from inside a specialist ANPR van.

The ANPR van (automated number plate recognition) monitors vehicles to identify those that are wanted or that have no insurance.

The ANPR systems operate by using a camera - capable of scanning thousands of number plates every hour.

The image of each number plate is fed through the camera into a computer system which can check the details of the vehicles against various databases, including the Police National Computer (PNC) and information held by the DVLA and Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB).
