A West Midlands Police officer and his wife have been rewarded for their bravery as they helped to rescue seven children and their mother from a house fire in Small Heath. Whilst he was off-duty, PC Shahid Iqbal and his wife Robina Kauser were travelling along Green Lane in Small Heath. They noticed smoke and flames coming from one of the houses and heard screaming coming from inside the property. They rushed from their car towards the house and PC Iqbal banged on the front door. It was opened by four young children who said that their sister and mother were upstairs. Robina Kauser ushered the four children to safety whilst PC Iqbal forced open the door which has closed behind them. He fought through smoke and flames to get inside the house and to the staircase where he found another three small children. He escorted them from the burning building and went back inside to try and find their mother, who was terrified and had to be coaxed to leave her home. Just as they exited the house, there was a loud explosion and a large double glazed window shattered sending glass flying into the air. When he was satisfied that there was nobody else left in the burning house, PC Iqbal set about evacuating the neighbouring buildings and clearing vehicles to allow the fire service to gain access. Meanwhile Robina comforted the children who were screaming with terror. Chief Superintendent Surjeet Manku, commander for Birmingham East Police, said: “The outstanding bravery and quick thinking shown by PC Shahid Iqbal undoubtedly saved several lives and he showed courage and professionalism in a life-threatening situation. “He acted selflessly and with bravery as he repeatedly escorted confused and panic stricken children from the address and from nearby houses and ensured that emergency services were informed. “The calm composure demonstrated by his wife Robina, offered reassurance to a family who had witnessed their home go up in flames. She found herself in a very traumatic situation; caring for screaming children whilst she watched her husband repeatedly enter the burning building. “They are both extremely deserving of their awards which are testament to their brave actions and we’re very proud of them.” PC Iqbal was awarded with a Chief Constable’s Commendation, while Robina will be awarded a Good Citizens Award, at a special awards ceremony which took place on 11 July at Tally Ho! |
