Description

This photograph shows the very first uniform worn by Birmingham Police and dates back to 1839.

The first uniform was designed to emphasise both the authority and approachability of Birmingham's first police officers.

The jacket gave an air of authority due to its military styling, whilst at the same time having tails to signify that officers were public servants.

Officers also wore a top hat during this era and wore white trousers in the summer to increase public visibility.

All officers during this time were men. We will be sharing information about women's uniforms tomorrow.

We will be adding more photographs and historical information about policing across the West Midlands as the year progresses.
