A man holds up a sign declaring "ERASED" referring to the many LGBT individuals persecuted in the Commonwealth and who's lives do not appear to matter. The woman next to him carries a sign reading "HOMOPHOBIA IS NEO-COLONIALISM. STOP IT." Many people do not realise that most of the repressive laws across Africa and the Commonwealth which criminalize gay rights were put in place by authoritarian British colonial administrations during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Another shocking and possibly surprising fact, according to human rights activist Peter Tatchell, is that half of all the countries in the world which outlaw sex and/or relationships between individuals of the same gender are members of the Commonwealth. The protest took place on 19 April 2018 as the Commonwealth Conference opened in London. Demonstrators were angry that over many years the Conference had refused even to discuss LGBT rights.
