Summary[edit]

Description

This man with an eye patch was just one among 80 protesters who had lost their eyes the previous month when Egyptian security forces killed nearly 50 demonstrators and wounded many more when they forcefully dispersed protests in Mohamed Mahmoud Street which lies just to the east of Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square.

The banner in the background which had been hung outside parliament reads "Yuskut hukm el-askar" or "Down with military rule" - aimed at SCAF - Egypt's ruling military council which demonstrators held accountable for the many deaths.

Video recordings made by protesters on the street and posted to Facebook show a highly trained police marksman, First Lieutenant. Mahmoud Sobhi El Shinawi, deliberately aiming at protesters eyes but there was also a strong suspicion that more than one individual police officer was involved.

Ghada Shahbender of the Egyptian Organisation for Human Rights said that as she passed through the ranks of the riot police, she heard a senior officer instructed his recruits to aim directly at protesters heads. ( Guardian 18 December 2011 ).

But the shootings didn't stop the protests - for a surprisingly large number of brave individuals, like the man in the photo, justice and freedom were even more important than their eyes and even their own lives.
