Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Horse-drawn supply carts and soldiers on foot and bicycle crossing the dry bed of the Canal du Nord, in the shadow of a bombed bridge. The railway line in the photograph was perhaps built to supply materials to the canal builders.

The Canal du Nord was still being built when World War I broke out. Even empty of water, the canal bed was a great obstruction to Allied soldiers and tanks, and formed part of the Hindenburg line of German fortifications. The Canadian storming of the canal on 27th September 1918 was a significant advance in the Allied autumn offensives.
[Original reads: 'The famous Canal du Nord which the Canadians stormed. Canadian transport passing through it up to the fighting at BOURLON WOOD.']
