| Description |
English: The Gay Head Lighthouse on Martha's Vineyard is now in process of being relocated. To help stabilize the structure - the brick wall supporting the lighting room on top of the light was reinforced with an exterior wooden corset.
The light will be relocated 125 feet to the east onto a new elevated foundation to ensure the light will continue its historic visibility 18 miles out to sea by passing vessels. On April 16 the light was switched off for the first time since its construction in 1856, and a temporary strobe on top of a pole was switched on. The relocation process is expected to be completed in June 2015. |
