be used. It is not generally known, says theTexas Railway News, that the famousNorth & South Railroad formerly hadno telegraph wire. It runs a short dis-tance in Southern Texas and has twotrains. Recently these trains met mid-way. There was a great quarrel as towhich train should back up to the end ofthe line. Finally the conductors agreedthat the train having the less number ofpassengers should back up. The pas-sengers were counted. One had nine, the other ten, and the train with the ninepassengers backed to its starting point. In tearing up a siding on the Straits-ville division of the Baltimore & OhioRailroad, the other day, the section mendiscovered that several of the rails hadbeen made in 1863. Subsequent investi-gation revealed the fact that these railswere part of a lot that were bought inEngland during the war, at a cost of $125per ton in gold. The rails were still invery fair condition, and for light motivepower would last ten years longer. LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING. 887
