Description
English: Madonna from Hove Church in Sogn, Norway, c. 1230, a medieval wooden sculpture on display in the Norwegian Church Art Exhibition at the University Museum of Bergen; Norway: Virgin and Child under the canopy have formed the main part of canopy altarpiece. Sculpture and canopy are lavishly covered in precious metals. It is not known if she was produced in Norway or abroad, but she bears a strong resemblance to Madonnas in Flanders and Northern France. According to older documents, the wings had pictures of the 12 apostles. The lower part of the canopy and the sculpture have been cut off.
Norsk bokmål: Madonna fra Hove kirke i Vik i Sogn, ca. 1230, malt middelalderskulptur skåret ut i eiketre i ungotisk stil, utstilt i kulturhistorisk avdeling ved Universitetsmuseet i Bergen:
  • Hove-madonnaen er en skulptur i eiketre av Maria med barnet. Den ble laget rundt år 1250, trolig i Bergen. Hove-madonnaen sto i Hove kirke i Vik i Sogn i nesten 600 år. Rundt 1840 ble skulpturen gitt til Bergen museum. Hove-madonnaen er ett av hovedverkene i bevart norsk figurkunst fra høymiddelalderen. Skulpturen står utstilt i Kirkekunstsamlingene ved Universitetsmuseet i Bergen.
  • Baldakin med Jomfru Maria og Jesusbarnet har utgjort midtdelen av et baldakinskap. Skulpturen og baldakinen er rikt dekorert med edelt metall. Det er ikke kjent om hun er produsert i Norge eller i utlandet, men hun har klare likhetstrekk med liknende skulpturer i Flandern og Nord-Frankrike. Etter eldre opptegnelser skal fløyene ha hatt fremstillinger av de tolv apostlene. Nedre del av baldakin og skulptur er nå avkuttet.
  • Med utgangspunkt i den originale skulpturen laget Treskjærerverkstedet fra 2017 til 2020 en kopi (hel rekonstrukjon) av Jomfru Maria som himmeldronning med Jesusbarnet som konge.
