Summary[edit]

Description
English: On February 22, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of southwestern British Columbia, Canada and northwestern Washington, United States.

Snow covers most of the region, included the forested Olympic Peninsula in western Washington and the Cascade Range, the mountains seen in the far eastern edge of the image. White clouds lie over the mountain tops. Snow also covers Vancouver Island, found in the northeast.

The deep, sheltered channels of the region connect allow for travel from the Pacific Ocean inland, making a perfect setting for numerous seaports and major cities. The city of Seattle sits on the Puget Sound and is the state’s largest city. Approximately 140 miles (225 km) north and slightly west of Seattle, Vancouver has the distinction of being the largest city in British Columbia. In true-color image, cities and human development can be seen as light gray pixels. When surrounded by green vegetation, city-gray is easy to spot. With a covering of snow, the gray tends to blend in, but careful viewing can reveal the two cities as a shade lighter than snow.
