Cat name

This category Category:Local history was created by User:維基小霸王 for a special kind of non-fiction works from East Asia. In East Asia, governments (and sometimes civilians) used to compile 史書 history books zh:史書 (東亞) (as one of the four traditional genres sibu classification (Q1970397)). A sub-genre of this is known as 地方志, which is a collection of chronological documentation of the history of, and documentation of all sorts of other stuff related to, a particular place (the smallest entity is usually a county, i.e. 縣志 history of county). (I'd say a modern equivalent is a lonely planet guide, but 地方志 is much more indepth and comprehensive.) zh:地方志 is currently linked to en:Chorography ja:地誌, but there is also a en:Local history ja:郷土史 (with no zhwp equivalent).

I have no idea what a proper English translation of 地方志 should be, but I'm just writing this in case non-Chinese users cant figure out this cat's original purpose.--Roy17 (talk) 18:26, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
