Non-translation “translations” on Commons:FAQ/bn

Commons:FAQ/bn is seemingly 99% translated, but in fact many of these “translations” are just copies of the English texts. This causes several issues:

  • Readers who look at the translation percentage think that they can read the page without knowing English, but this isn’t true;
  • Readers using accessibility software like screenreaders don’t get appropriate markup, since the Translate extension thinks these parts of the text are translated;
  • When a part of the text changes in English, it doesn’t get updated on the translation page because the extension thinks the translation, albeit outdated, is still more useful for readers than the English original (which would be true if it really was a translation, but not in this case).

Of course, the best solution would be actually translating those texts, but in case no Bangla speaker volunteers for that, at least the non-translation “translations” should be deleted. To do so, go to https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=page-Commons%3AFAQ&action=page&language=bn, and for each row where the right (translation) column contains obviously English text:

  • click anywhere on the row;
  • click on the unit name (e.g. Translations:Commons:FAQ/4/bn);
  • click on History;
  • now you’re on the page history of a wiki page, just delete it like any other wiki page. You may want to check the page history first, in case it previously had a proper translation, although none of the few I checked had.

Thanks in advance! —Tacsipacsi (talk) 09:36, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ping @Moheen who created these non-translations. GPSLeo (talk) 16:31, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I know that. But there are always lots of things I have to do. I will shortly translate the remaining. Thanks for notifying me. ~Moheen (keep talking) 17:10, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But why do you copy past the text? When viewing the page there will be the English text anyways if there is no translation. GPSLeo (talk) 17:31, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. It’s okay if not the whole page is translated in one go – just don’t touch the translation units you don’t translate. The system is smart enough to put the English text where there is no translation – and even smarter than a human, because it does so in a more accessible way than simply copying and pasting the English text. And at the same time, the statistics are not misleading. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:38, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done. Sorry for the inconvenience. ~Moheen (keep talking) 07:34, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wow. Clearly the correct decision. I don't think I ever saw any of this leak into Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 17:21, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have got a death treat on Commons from a registered user and reported it to T&S. They acknowledged a receipt. This was more than a year ago, I am still waiting for a global lock or a global ban. The user is an administrator on another project and continues editing there. (To be fair I used to get death treats for my Wikimedia activities on a weekly basis, now it went to somewhat like a monthly basis). Ymblanter (talk) 17:54, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer: I'd be very interested in your thoughts on what Ymblanter says here. That sounds like a serious problem, and you are probably far more connected to the relevant "mechanisms" than I am. - Jmabel ! talk 20:26, 14 May 2024 (UTC) @DerHexer: re-pinging because my missing sig would have prevented this from pinging. - Jmabel ! talk 18:41, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ymblanter, @Jmabel In my experience, T&S usually issues a private conduct warning before they ban in those sorts of situations. Some users have gotten more than one conduct warning before being banned. They should inform you when they resolve a report you submitted (by issuing a conduct warning, ban, or with no further action), but historically have not always done this well especially if similar conduct was reported by multiple people at the same time. I would encourage you to reply to the ticket and ask for an update, and if this does not work email ca@ directly to ask for an update. Feel free to email me details if you'd like me to reach out to someone directly on your behalf. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 20:49, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's sad how deep a formerly productive photographer and sysop colleague can fall and how suddenly. Although, given the fact how deep many Russian wiki(p/m)edians have fallen as well since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there's virtually nothing left that might surprise me. --A.Savin 19:52, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New system message for UploadWizard

Hi all! This is a request for interface admins: we're working on a specific message for when users upload medias with a wrong title, that would appear as a pop-up message when clicking on a specific link.

We would like to create a specific system message, maybe called MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-custom-filename-short, that only shows the examples for good and bad names taken from MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-custom-filename. The reason for this is that the full text is too long to be shown in a pop-up, and may cause that the user won't read it.

Is it possible to do so? Thanks in advance. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 14:30, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to not show the other information in that message, to be honest… do you maybe have some mockups or something similar (perhaps on Phabricator) to see what this would look like? Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 15:58, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Valued image candidate didn't get promoted?

Hi! My image was promoted to Valued image in 2020, but didn't receive the actual promotion, template, categories, etc. Should I do this by hand? Or should I take any other steps to make it happen? Cheers!

Promotion topic: Commons:Valued image candidates/Laguna de Gallocanta, Aragon, Spain - endorheic lake.jpg

Image itself: File:Laguna de Gallocanta, Aragon, Spain - endorheic lake.jpg Tupungato (talk) 11:40, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do not forget to patrol edits after a manual revert

I noticed that many of us forgot to mark vandalism edits as patrolled after they reverted them manually or though undo. This results in double work when they are checked twice. So please make sure to not forget this step after the cleanup. And to those who do not know the tool: There is a script that adds an one click button to patrol all revisions of a page MediaWiki:PatrolPageRevisions.js. Template:Trademarked

The Russian translation of the template begins as follows: "Это произведение содержит материал, который может быть субъектом законов о товарных знаках в одной или нескольких юрисдикциях". I suggest it amended because 'субъект' denotes 'person' in Russian legal language while trademarks are by no means persons.

Proposed version: "Это произведение содержит материалы, которые могут подпадать под действие законов о товарных знаках в одной или нескольких юрисдикциях". Ur frnd (talk) 09:35, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ur frnd: you can directly edit Template:Trademarked/ru and change it to your proposed version since it's not protected. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 17:25, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
