Remove background from images[edit]

Hello everyone, recently I uploaded six images of statues:

In the background you can clearly see wires of the railroad behind them. My question is if someone could remove these wires and then also make the background transparent. I have tried it with several free tools on the internet, but either it doesn't work or the quality is lost. I would like the images to be uploaded as new versions of the files. So not as new files, but as replacements (jpg format). I would be happy to hear if anyone would like to do this for me! Kind regards, S. Perquin (talk) 17:55, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@S. Perquin: Hello, You can make a request at the Commons:Graphic Lab. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:07, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thank you! I will do that! Kind regards, S. Perquin (talk) 19:10, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, User:ReneeWrites has overwritten the originals, rather than making new uploads as requested. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:54, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete an image due to personal information being on it.[edit]

Hello! I wanted to know if it is possible to have an earlier version of a file I have uploaded deleted - as I have personal information in the image I neglected to correct before uploading and I don't want public. It is a few versions older of the file currently in use. Can it be deleted due to that reason? Thank you to whomever answers! WindsorOnElectionMaps (talk) 20:01, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Which file and version? Abzeronow (talk) 20:03, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do I need to get permission?[edit]

I want to upload a picture from the following website: [1]https://jasminesherman.com/download-share/

On the website, it tells people to “download and share these images”. Do I still have to get permission from Ms. Sherman? LordBirdWord (talk) 20:22, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@LordBirdWord: That's not an open licence (It doesn't allow images to be modified, for instance), so overall, yes, you would need to get permission, in the form of an open licence.
That said, some of the images are derivatives of other copyright material, so are unlikely ever to be openly licensed. Others may not meet the threshold of originality, so are not subject to copyright.
We'd need to know exactly which image you have in mind, before we can advise further. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:40, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I want to use the 14th image. The 2nd one below Campaign Images. I wanna use it for the 2024 Green Party presidential primary page. LordBirdWord (talk) 20:55, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have created a new account with a new password. Now how do I change the password to something simple.[edit]

<redacted> is my password! CAN I PLEASE CHANGE IT TO SOMETHING SIMPLE. THANK YOU. WalWalgreens (talk) 21:14, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't ever tell people on the Internet your password, everyone can read this page! It doesn't look like a password though, more like an IP address. If you want to change your password, there is a link Preferences, at the very top of the page. This will lead you to your preferences page which has a "Change password" button. --rimshottalk 21:27, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1. Don’t show people on the internet your password.
2. On top of the page, click preferences. In it, it should say “change password”. LordBirdWord (talk) 21:45, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Own page[edit]

Hi, I've been asked to create a Wiki page of myself. I am a. female pilot who has made 3 solo Pacific Ocean crossings, and have made contributions to aviation. How do I, or how does someone else do this? Dreamer111111 (talk) 01:30, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is not Wikipedia, but Wikimedia Commons, where we don't write biographies, but we host media files that can be used elsewhere. If you need help with Wikipedia in English, you can ask questions here: w:en:WP:TEAHOUSE. If you are looking to write about yourself, I strongly recommend that you see w:en:WP:COI and w:en:WP:NOTABLE. —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:33, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not to mention en:Wikipedia:Autobiography, the nutshell description of which is, "Avoid writing or editing an article about yourself (or paying someone else to do so), other than to correct unambiguous errors of fact." It sounds like you have some impressive achievements, but you are literally the last person on Earth who should write about them in Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 06:02, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wrote a reply here:[2]. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:04, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Dreamer111111 however, you can upload images and video here at commons. For example media that you created on your flights or maybe from conferences you participated in. The media you upload can then be used in an article about you or for every other use. If you choose for example a cc-by license you will be mentioned when one of the media is used. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 13:17, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Dreamer111111, allow me to paraphrase @Justin. Even though you might be "literally the last person on Earth who should write about them in Wikipedia", you are quite literally the only person who could have photographed yourself during the solo flight. Such photographs are certainly needed ! FocalPoint (talk) 20:58, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly. To be clear, User:FocalPoint, I wasn't the one who wrote "literally the last person..." and also to be clear, having a biography on Wikipedia is different than a picture here on Commons. Your point about taking a selfie in a specialized context is very correct! If you have photos of yourself that you think is educational and meets our requirements for licensing, then it would be great to add it here. If you are struggling with how to add files here such as photos, let me know. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:00, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Justin, correct, my mistake, it was @Jmabel who wrote it ! FocalPoint (talk) 21:11, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And I agree with what everyone has said here about photos, which are welcome. I was responding to "I've been asked to create a Wiki page of myself," which presumably meant a Wikipedia article; the original question made no mention of photos or any other media uploads. - Jmabel ! talk 22:53, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am the secretary for the Society for Applied Spectroscopy. We have rebranded the soceity and I am trying to upload the new logo. I need some advice as to how to do this. Emiseo (talk) 19:42, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Emiseo: It would help a lot to say what country you are based in and to point to a page that contains the relevant logo so we can see what we are talking about. Copyright issues vary from country to country, and depend on how simple or complex the logo is, so it's much more efficient to talk about a specific case. - Jmabel ! talk 22:56, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is probably the en:Society for Applied Spectroscopy of the USA, which seems to have a new logo on its website. TSventon (talk) 14:30, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Emiseo: This is a little tricky. It looks like the old logo was released into the public domain by its designer. Is that the case again, or is someone retaining a copyright this time (as against just a trademark)? The instructions will be totally different based on the answer to that question, so let us know and someone can proceed from there. - Jmabel ! talk 14:40, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Copyrighted flags?[edit]

Hello. I imagine the two flags at the second picture here [4] are copyrighted. The flags (they're actually the two sides of one) were adopted in 1892. However this digital drawing is obviously not from then. The flags I think do pass the threshold of originality from my own judgement. According to the picture the source of the flags would be this 1995 book [5] but the organization represented by the flag does not seem to be mentioned in the book. The organization is the Macedo-Romanian Cultural Society, a private cultural organization in Romania that does not belong to the state. I just created an article for it in English Wikipedia and want to use the flags. Should I upload them here or there per fair use? Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 22:21, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The only thing there that I can really imagine having copyright is the branches (mlădițe). Romulus & Remus are almost certainly a copy of something much older; the tricolor certainly can't be copyrighted, and I doubt the arrangement can be. @Super Dromaeosaurus: I take it you disagree, though. Can you say why? - ~
Well I don't disagree, I'd love to be able to upload the flags, I just imagined it would not be possible. I'm not very well-informed on copyright issues anyway. So you say it is okay if I upload both flags in Commons? Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 09:29, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd actually appreciate other opinions here, because my rationale is a combination of the use of old elements, the simplicity of the design, the date of the overall design, etc. As I said, the biggest issue I see is the branches. Does anyone have a strong opinion on whether they are enough to make it copyrightable? - Jmabel ! talk 14:42, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since no-one else gave their insight, and having been encouraged by Jmabel, I've uploaded the flags [6] [7]. Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 13:52, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My company has refreshed its logo. We are after changing the old logo on the Wikipedia page: en:GPT_Group? How do we go about this request? GPT externalcomms (talk) 01:51, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@GPT externalcomms: Hi, and welcome. Overwriting old logo File:GPT Group Logo.svg is right out per COM:OW, as we value old logos too. You may upload a new logo here starting with COM:FS. Then another user can change which logo is used on English Wikipedia, as you have a en:WP:COI.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:38, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Jeff - I've now completed the upload. Are you able to confirm what step is required next? GPT externalcomms (talk) 07:35, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@GPT externalcomms: In short, upload under a new filename, then change the logo.
If the new logo is either below the threshold of originality (so it can't be copyrighted, just trademarked) or if you are free-licensing it (again, presumably retaining trademark) you can upload it here on Commons. Otherwise, it must be directly uploaded to the English-language Wikipedia as a non-free logo. See en:File:3D Entertainment.jpg for a good example of doing that. - Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@GPT externalcomms: I've corrected the licensing. You will want to add categories, as specific as possible (probably descendents of Category:Logo, as specific as you can be to location and industry). Then make the obvious edit at [:en:GPT_Group]] to change the logo currently there to the new one. Probably the edit will be more obvious if you edit source than if you use the visual editor. - Jmabel ! talk 14:58, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Maintenance for errors in a cropped file wanted[edit]

I have made a crop resulting in the image File:View from ISS on Monte Rosa mountain massif with highest Swiss mountain Dufourspitze, June 2022 - ISS067-E-152529 - View of Earth (cropped and edited).jpg some days ago. Two issues arose: The original image had 4 annotations, which are now (maybe not exactly precise, my observation) id 1 to id 4 in the new image. The further about 8 annotations (making about 12 alltogether) were added by another user after my crop and are good. Hence, the original 4 annotations are wrong (and are not shown, as they have the old image dimensions, much larger) and should be deleted (I could try myself but have observed very strange errors when editing annotations in the past, so I refrain). This was issue one. Second issue: The camera location data lowermost in the infobox somehow evolved into something wrong during the crop, so that now, a red error message is shown instead. I tried to analyze the code to remedy this, but did not find any location data in the cropped file at all, just "location" without any data behind. It would be nice if the original location info could be restored, but I would be perfectly ok if just the error message vanishes, and no location info is provided. Thanks in advance, Pittigrilli (talk) 11:32, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Pittigrilli: I suppose you can just remove the wrong annotations. The good annotations can be renamed 1-8. The location coordinates are in the structured data of the source file. You could copy them to the extracted file, in the location template or in the structured data. However, those coordinates locate the camera in Italy. Was the satellite above Italy for this photo of Switzerland? -- Asclepias (talk) 14:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Asclepias: Interesting observation, this may very well be the case with Italy. In fact, the border between Italy and Switzerland runs just along the Monte Rosa massif, hence the camera position might just be (theoretically) some inches or some km inside Italy, which would be roughly at the lower (and somewhat right) image border. Thanks, Pittigrilli (talk) 14:22, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I deleted the wrong annotation sections and renumbered the correct ones, worked out well. I have a hard time though with copying the location from the structured data section of the original file (something with the format), could sb please do that? Image Upload Issue[edit]

Hi, I am trying to update the picture profile on a page and it will not let me replace it with the current image I have, it says that it cannot determine whether the photo is suitable for Wikipedia Commons. How do I prove that I own the image? Dsteinmetz (talk) 15:14, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Dsteinmetz: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post permission on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Technical issue[edit]

Hi. I think I might have made an error when creating a deletion request here. I noticed that the prefix "File:" is missing before the file's name. Is it something that can be resolved with a page move or should I ask for an administrator's help? Sorry if all of this sounds trivial. I'm mostly active on English Wikipedia, not on the Commons so I'm not 100% familiar with the rules and regulations. Best. Keivan.fTalk 18:48, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

謝謝--125.230.72.73 23:00, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is this revocation reasonable and correct?

I was corrected a while ago, so I wanted to ask for advice. On a certain photo, I performed two editing actions at the same time in one stroke, one to add category A and the other to modify category B. Later, this edit was revoked. This revocation caused Category B to be changed back and Category A to be removed along with it. I asked the other party why they canceled it, and I found out that the B classification I had modified was wrong. Although I had corrected the wrong classification for B, it was only for B, which meant that there was no problem with A. So I asked him why he also revoked A, but he didn’t respond. Since there is no response, it means that he has no reason for the A classification, so I am suspicious of his revocation. What I suspect is that he actually has a better way that doesn't require the undo action. He can only focus on the B classification and manually modify the wrong classification back. Because he has history and can see the previous difference, he can know what the original correct classification was.

To be honest, I not only can't understand it, but I can't accept it, because this kind of revocation feels like one place is wrong, and everything is wrong, which is unreasonable. This is also the reason for the "dispute". Therefore, I would like to ask everyone, if in the same transaction, the editing content is only classified into B, then there is a problem, but A is not a problem, and I choose to cancel it. Is this correct? If it is correct, please tell me why. Thanks

Editing[edit]

I've made almost 3,000 Wikipedia edits. 18 April I requested that I be able to edit here. Earlier today I attempted to edit a caption but despite the caption in the box having changed after I clicked Edit and Publish changes the caption itself hasn't changed. Does that mean my request hasn't been granted? Mcljlm (talk) 20:18, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mcljlm: Hi, and welcome. It appears your edit special:diff/874251573 was made. Perhaps you didn't refresh or review COM:CACHE?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:58, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Jeff G. I still see October 7 rather than 7 October in the caption at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Child%27s_bedroom,_Kfar_Aza,_after_October_7_Hamas_Attacks.jpg despite having shut down my desktop several times in the last 3 days as well as coming to it via various articles in which it's included and refreshing it. Mcljlm (talk) 15:24, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mcljlm: Your edit was to the English caption on structured data on Commons. Sadly, that has nothing to do with how the photo is displayed on the six Wikipedia articles which use it. There is nothing to change in those articles.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:03, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Public Domain Photo Map Altered via Photoshop. Ok to use?[edit]

Hello, I recently uploaded a public domain photo that I have since gotten altered by someone else. More specifically, the black line in the middle caused by newspaper creasing has been removed via Photoshop. Is altered material alright to use even though it's public domain? Wjenkins96 (talk) 04:10, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Wjenkins96: Sure, removal of the black line is not creative. The remover can choose the existing {{PD-US-expired}} or any other free license tag we accept.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:08, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Too Simple[edit]

AbchyZa22 (talk) 21:02, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

—Justin (koavf)TCM 21:07, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
AbchyZa22 (talk) 21:40, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I need some help![edit]

So I uploaded a file to Wikimedia without properly understanding how to cite the copyright holder. It is a screenshot (that I took) of a video game (Yakuza 3), and so it falls SEGA's domain. I would appreciate what to do, as I don't know how to cite SEGA without re-uploading. Here is the file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kiryu_Kazuma_Yakuza_3.png Also: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Roosterchz If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it. -Roosterchz Roosterchz (talk) 21:13, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Roosterchz: Since this is protected by copyright, it has to be deleted. See COMM:LICENSE. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:14, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, welp...
So, should I just re-upload? What should I do this time for proper copyright citation?
Thanks, Roosterchz (talk) 21:16, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here on Wikimedia Commons, we only accept freely licensed media. So you can either 1.) get SEGA to relicense this screenshot or 2.) not upload it. Why are you trying to upload the file at all? —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:23, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I get it now.
This isn't worth the effort anymore, sorry for wasting your guys' time. I'll be more careful in the future.

Záncara[edit]

Hola. Záncara (talk) 17:01, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

- Jmabel ! talk 21:49, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hola.
Strakhov (talk) 02:15, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Minecraft[edit]

On the English Wikipedia I am trying to make a list, Draft:List of Minecraft mobs and I was wondering if I could go on Minecraft and take screenshots of the mobs and put them in as images. I am not sure if this is plagiarism 48JCL (talk) 01:56, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 48JCL. I'm not sure it would be considered en:plagiarism per se to do such a thing, but there's a good chance that such a screenshot would be considered to be a copyright violation as explained in COM:SCREENSHOT if either the en:Minecraft software hasn't been released under in accordance with COM:L or the copyright holders of the software don't give their COM:CONSENT for the screenshot you take. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:12, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Title not correct[edit]

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hyde_Terrace,_Leeds,_c.1897.jpg#%7B%7Bint%3Afiledesc%7D%7D This Commons photo should really be simply titled "Yorkshire, c.1894" I cannot find any reason as to why my team titled it "Hyde Terrcae, Leeds". This incorrect/misleading title needs to be removed please.

Please change title to make it more in keeping with the original Alamy photograph title/description. Thank you115.70.23.77 04:10, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP 115.70.23.77. I think the file's description might be a minor issue when it comes to File:Hyde_Terrace,_Leeds,_c.1897.jpg. I'm not sure the licensing for that file is correct. Why do you think the file is {{Cc-zero}}? Did you read the wording of that license? Do you know the "person who associated a work with this deed has dedicated"? If you're Srbernadette, then maybe you and your team need to be a bit more careful when uploading files to Commons. There's quite a lot of licensing related notification posted at User talk:Srbernadette. Even though not all of the files mentioned there ended up being deleted, it seems that enough have been deleted to the point where you and your team might want to slow down a bit until you get a better feel for image copyright. It's possible that this file's licensing just needs to be tweaked, but neither you nor your team should just be uploading files with questionable licenses on the hope that someone will fix the problem later. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:54, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Another apparent oddity is the relationship of the image with Alamy, which is where it's described as coming from, and which of course is a commercial service. Did you (singular? plural?) pay Alamy US$45 (or similar) for a version without "watermarks"? (If so, does the contract with Alamy let Srbernadette first award herself the copyright and then magnanimously waive it?) Or did you decide that, wherever in the world you happen to be, Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp. applies? Or did you find a way to remove the "watermark" for yourself/selves? ¶ Though perhaps I'm missing something obvious. -- Hoary (talk) 05:41, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
