A city on the banks of Pennar river in southwestern Andhra Pradesh in Anantapur district, it is also referred to as Tadpatri, Tatipatri, Tativanam, Tamalapalle or Bhaskarakshetra in historic Indian literature. The name is derived from the thick forest of palm trees that once existed south of this town. The Tatipatri name first appeared during the Vijayanagara Empire, and the modern phonetic English equivalent Tadipatri during the colonial British era. It was a major city before the 17th-century and the regional capital of a governor under the Vijayanagara rulers and once featured many Hindu and Jain temples. Upon the fall of the Vijayanagara empire, most were torn down to be re-used as masonry, and only two of the largest Vijayanagara temples have survived. The surviving temple are notable for their intricate carvings and numerous relief panels on the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
