Category talk:Ribbon bars of the United States

Question

I was just wondering, if any of the ribbons can be placed into a more specific category (for example, if there is an existing category of the organization it is for), and it is placed there, should it be deleted from this category? That would avoid duplication, or is the category meant for every ribbon bar whether it is better categorized or not??--Nyctc7 (talk) 03:38, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

I'm no expert, but I would say that it is a hell of a mess right now. You could get all kinds of sub categories going on. Rules at commons seem to be different from Wikipedia sometimes, and categories are a bigger deal over here it seems. I would say if they are in a subcategory, they do not need to be in a container category, however some ribbons may bridge the divide of categories, and then in that case common sense dictates it stays in however many cats it needs to be in. If you want to take a whack at it, do it, what's the worst that can happen, everything can be reverted/restored. EricSerge (talk) 05:04, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

I'll work on this over a few days. If a ribbon bar is both in the category SVG ribbon bars of the United States and it's proper category (e.g. Decorations of National Guard of Deleware), I'll leave that alone. The non-svg ones are tagged with hidden category Category:Military insignia images that should use vector graphics, so there will be a record of them somewhere else, so if I can place such ribbons I'll delete them from category Ribbon bars of the United States. Updated note-I see that there is a fairly new (hidden) subcategory Category:Ribbon images that should use vector graphics, so I'll use that one if it isn't there; however, if it already has Military insignia one I'll leave that alone for now, that's another project--Nyctc7 (talk) 06:30, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Medals vs. Ribbon Bars

Some of the other countries on Commons have military medals and ribbon bars under different Categories. But that's not the way it is here for the U.S., where they are lumped together, that is, the medal and the ribbon bar representing the medal are treated as if they are one and the same. For ribbon bar-only awards, they may be categorized under the name or type of the award, then categorized within the entity that issued the award. No category "Ribbon Bars of the United States Army" or "Ribbon Bars of the United States Navy" exists, as of this writing. Civil decorations are likewise not separately categorized between medals and ribbon bars. Therefore, I have added a note at the top of the page of this category to search within the categories military decorations of the U.S. and civil decorations of the U.S.--Nyctc7 (talk) 20:57, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
