Communist icon

I am not sure if this is a good icon to use. Public display of the hammer and sickle is illegal in some countries (as are other symbols of oppressive governments, such as the double sig rune: wikipedia:Strafgesetzbuch section 86a). Nicole Sharp (talk) 22:15, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

@Nicole Sharp: i agree with you. also windows install instruction for program are outdated and need update. regards--مصعب (talk) 19:45, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
The icon and name are a clear pun and there's no reason to change them. But yes, Commonist nowadays could be considered superseded by other upload tools like Vicuna. --Nemo 07:43, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
@Incnis Mrsi: Hi. Can you please update windows install instruction because it is outdated. Regards--مصعب (talk) 12:39, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
Commonist program icon showing hammer and sickle
A red hammer and sickle, form matching that on the Soviet Union's flag from 1955–1991
@Nemo bis: While the name Commonist is a combination of words Commons and Communism, there's no pun with use of hammer and sickle as the logo for Commonist. @Nicole Sharp: is right that this symbol is illegal in many jurisdictions and I would add that it triggers lots of negative connotations. The hammer and sickle was the main symbol for communism in its several practical implementations which were totalitarian political systems with millions of victims. Use of this symbol should not never happen on any Wikimedia project. I  Support the change of the logo for the Commonist app. --Rezonansowy (talk) 23:54, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Can Commonist be used to upload a new version of a file?

I used Commonist to upload book illustrations, but presently I upload book illustrations by CropTool, that's a great app; nevertheless very often the uploaded image needs to be post-processed (gray conversion, levels manipulation to remove light gray background); therefore it would be great to use Commonist to upload new versions of post-processed images, with no change of file description test but a comment.

Can I use Commonist to do such a work? --Alex brollo bis (talk) 21:31, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

"Categories: ....Try to avoid using more than two topic categories per image, they can be added later." Why is that?? Better as many categories as possible at upload, there might never come a "later", right? Cheers, Hansmuller (talk) 16:02, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Save user password and UTF-8 support

I would like so have my commons password saved in order to avoid searching it again and again after every start of the commonist.

A second feature (bug?) is concerning character problem. For instace if images have a description field in their metadata containing UTF-8 characters, commonist is displaying weird wrong ANSI characters in the image description field. Editing help

Hello everybody,

I have a question about the editing on here and I was wondering if anybody here could help me with it. So, the thing is that I would like a 'user gallery' header on this page but every time the page gets updated, the new entry goes on top of the header. Does anybody know how to keep this header on the very top of the page at all times and have new entries to the gallery get placed to the bottom of the header?

Hello, there is a problem with the installing section in Linux OS. The actual version of commonist don't have « bin » and « etc » files, so we don’t need to extract them. And (and there is a big problem for noob in linux), the command to start commonist isn’t « bin/commonist » but « ./commonist ». In a nutshell- it says Both Vicuna and Commonist are written in Java, and require a java library to function. The Java library is broken. Vicuna and Commonist and any other tool written in Java will not work. Add to that the Upload Wizard is not pulling location from the exif data- and we have no effective way of uploading. ClemRutter (talk) 21:40, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
No, it is not a problem with a Java library, but a breaking change in the MediaWiki API. This change was announced several years ago, but the developers of these tools did not notice it. --Rodomonte (talk) 19:54, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
So we can expect an imminent fix ?! ClemRutter (talk) 15:33, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
Apparently not. WMF is utterly uninterested in those users that keep its projects going. --Anvilaquarius (talk) 19:44, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
This is a recurring problem, specifically if the foundation has more and more resources, we, the contributors, always work with the means at hand. As if there are not the right people in the right places. Jérémy-Günther-Heinz Jähnick (talk) 15:19, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
I think so too. This appears to be a lack of interest from the part of the Foundation in helping his contributors to better upload a lot of photos to Commons. While that is the main purpose of Commons. They certainly have other goals. A month and a half since Commonist is down and no help. --Poudou99 (talk) 16:23, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

No, all tools programmed with java don't work. Gruss --Nightflyer (talk) 14:35, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Ok, so is it possible to mass-upload by (for example) Pywikibot? To mass by Upload wizard (without giving details for each file)? And after that change names, categories, descriptions, by VFC Visual File Changer? That would be an alternative. Anyone who has done mass upload with these, in the last few weeks? (so we know it works now) --Janwikifoto (talk) 18:34, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Any working mass upload, dec-2021 ?

Hello, while commonist/vicuna does not work, is it possible to mass-upload by

a) Pywikibot

b) To mass upload by Upload wizard

c) anything else known to work, right now? Does anybody know?

I must say that having logo of murderous regime plastered across many files which were transferred using this tool is irritating. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 09:27, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

Agreed. If I ever find this tool useful I would ask for a fork for normal people insted of this one for shameless ghouls. TFerenczy (talk) 10:27, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
In case it ever works again: {{Commonist no icon}} --Watchduck (quack) 20:05, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
I second this, if we're gonna use a symbol we should probably use one that isn't banned by various post-Communist governments. EnzoTC (talk) 03:09, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
I think that "it is banned in several countries" is not a good argument by itself. Plenty of things are banned in multiple countries or were or will be but should not be Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:33, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
I have seen this posted before- when the symbol was chosen, it was done so with one 'tongue in cheek'. The sense of programmers humour that stemmed from Monty Python- twenty five years later humour has changed and in the shadow of Zaporizhzhia a global reversion may be needed. As usual on wikipedia, it is better to propose an alternative than just to oppose. What should the alternative logo look like- and why? ClemRutter (talk) 15:22, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
The joke is about as funny as a swastika (actually worse: 9× as many kills, concentration camps in North Korea and China still working). If there's no alternate logo, no logo is needed. -KiloByte (talk) 16:06, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
I definitely do not want to get into discussion which of turbomurderous regimes was worse (Nazism included murder of millions by design and entirely intended, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generalplan_Ost that would happen if Germany would win would dwarf USSR actions). But I think that it is clear that hammer and sickle is symbol of one of the worst regimes in human history, responsible for mass murder and genocide. I see why some may find it funny as edgy humour. But that not makes it OK, in the same way as swastika logo or "I want to rape you" T-shirt are not really welcome types of humour. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:29, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
Agreed. Egdy humor has a bit of a tradition in the greater Wikip/media community, but at the very least we should keep that out of our content namespaces. If someone wants to put {{User Commonist}} on their user page, I'm absolutely fine with that, but can we please keep it off of files? El Grafo (talk) 07:57, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
Hello, I agree that especially the logo is offensive. "Commonist" does not necessarily refer to "Communist", does ist? Ziko van Dijk (talk) 20:19, 5 September 2022 (UTC)

Specific proposal

I propose to create {{Commonist with icon}} and switch current {{Commonist}} to using version without an icon. It would effectively stop showing this icon across almost all files, but give people who really want it ability to get back to the old behaviour. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:33, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

And I propose not to make choices for other people. Users have chosen to use one or the other template. That choice is to be respected, and not sneakily changed into what some people think they should have chosen. --Watchduck (quack) 19:09, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Commonist is still needed

Commonist was the most convenient of batch uploading. It did its job. The built in uploader has many features, many additions, many extra checks but suffers from too much handholding that slows you down and trying to make you give extra information that to my mind belongs to a different parallel project. So where is Commonist now? The intobox says use ViunaUploader- that project is no longer supported either.

This topic is circular and maybe already answered elsewhere-if so, tut mir Leid, if not someone needed to start the conversation. ClemRutter (talk) 15:11, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
