Commons talk:Do not disrupt Commons to illustrate a point
Guideline[edit]
I think this page has the potential to become a guideline. The essay seems to sufficiently document our consensus about point-illustrating, in my opinion. I'd like to hear your opinions, on what to add and remove before this can become a guideline. Thanks, pandakekok9 14:28, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
I don't have time to look at the details, but this is effectively how the admins already view things. Yes, it would be good to codify it. - Jmabel ! talk 17:05, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- I agree but we should include something about categories as that is a disruption here. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 23:17, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- What do you mean? pandakekok9 01:52, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- Added an example. It may need rewording. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:53, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- Ah, ok. Thanks for adding it. pandakekok9 07:00, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Ricky81682: probably the advice should also say that you should ping contributors who appear to have been working on related categories, and that if your proposal looks likely to affect thousands of categories, you should probably post a short notice on the Village Pump pointing to the discussion you are starting. - Jmabel ! talk 04:13, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
- I'd go even further and oblige users to use the talk page of those contributors instead of just pinging them (just like we do with DRs), because the latter can fail to notify the said contributors. I agree with using the VP if the change will significantly affect lots of categories. pandakekok9 04:56, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Ambiguity[edit]
"do not try to run down that sysop." Does this mean "do not try to get in touch with that sysop", "do not try to insult that sysop's reputation", or something else I might not be thinking of? In any case, it should be clearer. "Run down" has too many meanings. - Jmabel ! talk 16:13, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
