English: IN SEARCH OF MISSING LANDMARKS
Hong Kong's maritime history is layered with intrigues and complexity. Outside of museums, much of that history is obscured by the modern city's built form. It is hard to imagine that before office towers, ferry terminals, and piers, old fortifications tood guard over the city's busy harbour. The Hong Kong Nautical Chart surveyed by Captain Belcher in 1841 overlayed above a modern urban map of Hong Kong. One can glean references to these forts from before British rule. Qing records show that Chinese Commissioner Lin Zexu proposed the plan of the Tsim Sha Tsui and Kwun Chung Batteries. |
