The history of cycling in the Netherlands initially coincided with developments in nearby European countries. From 1900, the Dutch cycling culture gradually emerged. Typical for this are the importance of the utilitarian use (for commuting, etc.), the fact that cycling is largely neutral to welfare and that people of all ages cycle.
