Happy Public Domain Day 2017

I have restored File:Lijagulep-1908.jpg. Enjoy! Reventtalk 01:48, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Also Commons:Deletion requests/Aves Hawaiiensis illustrations by Frohawk. Reventtalk 07:07, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
Cool! There are actually a few more pictures that could be restored, it seems, such as:[1][2] And many others in this Wikipedia category:[3] FunkMonk (talk) 15:53, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
File:Puijila darwini.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

How to find/validate Exif date?

Hi~ I'm just curious how to know when the date is wrong as mentioned in Special:Diff/228403271? (I can't find where it mentions the date in the Exif data. Is there another way? o.o) Zeniff (talk) 22:43, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

You can see it on the Flickr page if you click "show Exif". There obviously weren't digital cameras like that in 1980... FunkMonk (talk) 09:02, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
Sorry for my ignorance.. Thank you for the explanations! Now I understand!:) Zeniff (talk) 04:33, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
No problem, you would expect this info to be in the Commons file page too, since there is a metadata section for it after all. FunkMonk (talk) 09:07, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Hey FunkMonk,

may you please link DOIs with [[doi:...]]? E.g. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0080557 instead of http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0080557 ? The DOIs are meant to be linked via the official resolver at dx.doi.org, so that it's immune to changed links at the publishers webpage.--Kinder-TÜV (talk) 17:54, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

Well, yeah, but my intention was not to link specifically to a doi, I just took the URL to the study. FunkMonk (talk) 20:11, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

Deletion Request Help

Hello FunkMonk! I was wondering if you'd be able to delete the image at the following URL: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cutting_a_cake_for_the_US_Air_Force%27s_66th_birthday_130920-F-BD9983-020.jpg The image has since been scrubbed from all known websites at my request, including the host website defenseimagery.mil (which was the original authority that took the picture). I have searched the image, and no other pages show up except for Wikimedia; Wikimedia is the last website I know that still hosts the image when the name "Tiffani Ali" is searched. The picture has caused me significant distress, as I'm still hoping to get it removed after two years. Could I please request that the image be deleted, or in the very least, have my name removed from the "Comment section" under file history, and "Image Data" under Metadata? My hope is that the image will not appear when the name "Tiffani Ali" is searched. I am reaching out to you, despite there being a nomination request already open (at the following URL: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Cutting_a_cake_for_the_US_Air_Force%27s_66th_birthday_130920-F-BD9983-020.jpg), in hopes that you could help me in resolving this issue. Any help would leave me very grateful. Kajetanolo (talk) 02:42, 30 April 2017 (UTC) Kajetanolo (talk) 02:42, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

I have voiced my support for removing the name at the DR, but I am not sure how remove to it technically myself. But I am sure someone will suggest how at th DR. FunkMonk (talk) 02:54, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

Reminder to those who still doubt Assad's atrocities - ask why he won't allow UN inspectors into #Saydnaya. Ask what has he got to hide — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 78.147.33.101 (talk) 17:22, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Saucerrll. How come you troll around on Commons now? If you're referring to the "crematorium" tall-tales, I'm about as convinced by that as I was of the images of Iraqi WMD silos and the stories about incubators of Kuwaiti babies being turned off by Iraqi soldiers. The file you created way back in 2008's now a deadlink, I tried looking on the wayback machine but I couldn't find anything (mostly because that thing confuses me). Could you help me out? Dunkleosteus77 (talk) 22:20, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Hmmm, seems the original Flickr photographer deleted it, but it should be ok, since we have this: "This image, originally posted to Flickr, was reviewed on November 10, 2009 by the administrator or reviewer File Upload Bot (Magnus Manske), who confirmed that it was available on Flickr under the stated license on that date." Doesn't seem the Wayback Machine archives Flickr. FunkMonk (talk) 22:46, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Should I just flag it as a deadlink and leave it? Dunkleosteus77 (talk) 02:37, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, if the sourcing/license isn't in question, it really isn't a problem. The problem would arise if we couldn't establish whether the image had ever been sourced/licensed as indicated, but here we at least have "proof" in the bot-review. FunkMonk (talk) 03:04, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, while I got you here, File:Megalodon jaws on display at the National Baltimore Aquarium.jpg is also a deadlink but it has OTRS permission. Is it still okay to leave it with a deadlink flag and move on? Dunkleosteus77 (talk) 03:25, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, I'd say that in any case where sourcing/licensing of an image has been confirmed independently by "authorities" at the time it was online, its legitimacy should be beyond doubt. FunkMonk (talk) 03:59, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Hello

I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.

Cheers,

--Touzrimounir (talk) 22:16, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

Looks interesting, I'll have a look. FunkMonk (talk) 02:04, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Old page move vandalism

Hi, I discovered that much of this talk page's history was deleted at Commons:Shut up motherfucker so I did a history merge back to here. Guanaco (talk) 07:54, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

Haha, I don't even remember that! But thanks. FunkMonk (talk) 08:17, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

Yeah, I think that guy used to email me too long ago, I tried to make him do constructive edits on the English Wikipedia, but he was impossible to control... FunkMonk (talk) 22:20, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
Sure looks like it. We all got our followers. More or less annoying ones. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 22:34, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

Elasmosaurus serpentinus

Thanks for the explanation. I note, though, that w:en:Elasmosaurus serpentinus is still a redirect to w:en:Styxosaurus. Should that be changed? --EncycloPetey (talk) 15:57, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

It's a tricky situation, I think the issue is that this particular specimen in the picture[4] is of dubious identity, but it isn't the type specimen of any species, so it doesn't affect synonymy. I'll ping Lythronaxargestes, who worked on the Wikipedia Elasmosaurus article with me for details. FunkMonk (talk) 19:21, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
