One of my Alyssa Milano pics

Hi. Regarding the message you left on my talk page, and what I now assume is a related edit made by another editor to one of my Alyssa Milano photos, that photo was taken by me at Midtown Comics Downtown in Manhattan on September 12, 2015, along with hundreds of others, 91 of which are in their own category here on the Commons. This is the second time in two weeks someone has flagged that photo for copyright reasons, and I don't know why. If you wish to verify this, just contact the store. Midtown Comics has its own Wikipedia article, and its co-owner, Gerry Gladston, would be more than happy to vouch that I regularly cover signings at that store with his approval. The photo was uploaded in accordance with all required licensing requirements, just as all the other 12,000 photos of mine that I've uploaded since 2007. Please advise. Hi! I am a member of BCS Bishop‘s College School and I did take the photos from the campus or school historical archives with permission to add on the BCS wiki page. Please review and delete the relevant requests. Thanks you.

License review

Hello, Gbawden. Can you please review the following pictures?

Best, Lefcentreright (talk) 23:01, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Good evening, Gbawden, I see you only reviewed two of the images. Thanks for taking the time to do that. What about the other three images? If there are any problems with them, please let me know. Regards, Lefcentreright (talk) 20:36, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

Review

Attentive greetings, what is the significance of the deletion "PER NOMINATION" in Files uploaded by Berposen? These files if I corrected them. I request in the most attentive way that the changes be reviewed, to re-upload the images.

--Berposen (talk) 03:48, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

@Berposen: We need proof of the date that the photo was taken in order to determine PD status. In one of the files I looked at the source said (C) at the bottom - so how do we know its PD? If you disagree you can request undeletion at COM:UDR Gbawden (talk) 07:01, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
Thank you, I will request only those that I named, in all the others you made an excellent edition. --Berposen (talk) 17:07, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

NOT DELETED File:AhmadRiad.jpg

Restoration Request

Hi, I can see that you removed all the images I uploaded on commons. None of them is an advertisement nor anyone violates copyrights. Could you please restore it? I can provide the additional information you need. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikilanemak (talk • contribs) 09:38, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

@Wikilanemak: Some of the files you uploaded were taken from FB without permission but claimed as own work. Others were used as advertising. Please read COM:L and COM:SCOPE before uploading more photos Gbawden (talk) 09:54, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
@Gbawden: How can I prove that I've asked for the image from the owner and uploaded with their permission as they don't have technical knowledge? I've gone through COM:L and COM:SCOPE before uploading and as far as I know, none of them are used for the advertisement or self endorsement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikilanemak (talk • contribs) 11:39, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
The person taking the photo (the photographer) must provide permission via the COM:OTRS process. However most of your photos are being deleted as advertising/spam - you are trying to promote people who appear to be out of scope. You cannot upload images to promote someone you know- there has to be an educational use for them and they have to be taken by you or freely licensed. You can ask questions at the Help Centre Gbawden (talk) 11:47, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

you deleted File:Walshee.jpg at 7:30am BST today and i am requesting that you un do your actions i own all work i have uploaded and find it offensive that you do not believe i own the rights to MY OWN WORK you did not give me enough time to respond to your answer before carrying out your actions and i have reported it as such.

Please un do your actions as it is clear you have not done research into who actually owns the work I uploaded (being MYSELF) nor did you think about asking first, in future i hope you think before you act and only remove things that actually infringe on copyright Walshee101 (talk) 10:28, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

Restoration Request - Eitan Azaria's Photo

Hello Gbawden, You've removed the photo of Eitan Azaria due to Possible copyrights violation. However, This photo of Eitan Azaria was taken by the photographer Tal Flint, who emailed: permissions-he@wikimedia.org His consent to upload the image by a free license to Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons, including a signed permission. Please undelete the photo. Shellir1982 (talk) 08:08, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

@Shellir1982: Please follow the instructions on COM:OTRS and we can restore the photo Gbawden (talk) 08:12, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
@Gbawden: I've Followed the instructions on COM:OTRS - and sent permission statement to the address listed above (permissions-he@wikimedia.org) few days ago. As far as I understand from the COM:OTRS instruction ,the only thing I didn't do is to place the tag: OTRS pending. Should I place it now? what other actions are required in order to restore the photo? Shellir1982 (talk) 09:44, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
@Shellir1982: An OTRS volunteer will check the email and request undeletion of the file. If they need more info they will let you know. Gbawden (talk) 09:49, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

@Gbawden: you pointed out that I have been flickrwashing, a term I didn't know, but now I understand, I realise I'm entirely guilty of. Question

Hey how are you, is it possible to uploads this file here in commons?.--Philip Ib (talk) 17:56, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

@Philip Ib: Hi Philip. Unfortunately not. Do you see the $ sign - that means no commercial use which is not acceptable for commons. If you take a look at COM:L there is a nice table showing the acceptable licenses. If you want to upload files to commons I suggest the Flickr2Commons tool (https://flickr2commons.toolforge.org/index.htm) - the tool checks the license and if the license is not valid for commons then it won't upload it. Hope this helps Gbawden (talk) 07:48, 13 September 2020 (UTC)

Deletion request File:Sarah Spiegel.jpg

Hi. I received notice of your request to delete this photo because of your conclusion that it was not likely an uncopyrighted photo. I am the original submitter of the photo. I am also the person who took the photograph and I submitted it with the understanding that it was to be of free use to anyone. I attempted to make this comment under the actual deletion request, but I'm not sure I did so correctly, as I do not see it there now. If this resolves things for you, as I believe it should, would you be so kind as to forestall any further efforts to delete the photograph under the original allegation? Thank you. Thanks for uploading File:NZ Army hosts first Combined Joint Senior Enlisted Leader conference (48280141337).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Deleted photos of Hemal

I have noticed that, you have cited that two photos of actor Hemal Ranasinghe were taken from FB. But, it is ridiculous. They have taken by me and I have uploaded them to the Wiki. Then my friends upload them in their FB profiles. Is is fair then? I did not take it from FB. My photos were later used in FB. Ridiculous deletion!!! Gihan Jayaweera (talk) 21:58, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

@Gihan Jayaweera: Hi. The easiest way to fix the problem is upload the photo straight from your camera. In this case the photos were first posted to FB then downloaded and posted here. In cases like that we need confirmation that you did indeed take the photos. Gbawden (talk) 06:40, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi Gbawden, you seem to have deleted a lot of files that are in the public domain like File:Bartholomaeus Spranger 1546-1611 - Fama vede Umeni na Olymp.jpg with the cryptic log message: "Per a Deletion Request". Took me quite a bit of effort to find Commons:Deletion requests/Uploads by NGCZ. Can you please link to the deletion request in your summary in the future? Multichill (talk) 13:14, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Multichill: Sorry about that. I used VFC to do the deletions and it didn't give me the option for free text in the deletion reason, only the pre-populated reasons. It wasn't my intention to be so cryptic Gbawden (talk) 13:20, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

It's a quite weird deletion request. How can you steal something that is in the public domain? Multichill (talk) 16:20, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

I arrived here after noticing that File:Jacob van Ruisdael 1628 1629-1669 - Les s potokem.jpg was deleted. I don't understand why the deletion request is not done on a case by case basis. Of course I would prefer to have this one but now I am left with this Category:Paintings by Jacob van Ruisdael in the National Gallery, Prague. I am sure that can't be the intention here. You should restore all of these images until the high resolution versions are uploaded. Jane023 (talk) 16:24, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Wikimedia could have been a little more critical towards the Národní Galerie. But that's my opinion. Btw, lots of these images can also be accessed through https://rkd.nl. (346 hits on "Národní Galerie v Praze"). Vincent Steenberg (talk) 17:06, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
It's not a copyright issue. Apparently it's a database issue, but yes you're right. Very weak deletion reason. Anyway, I re-uploaded the one I was looking for because their website has a better version indeed: File:Jacob van Ruisdael - Wooded Landscape with Stream CZE NG.DO 4156.jpeg It's just annoying because all the other links are broken. @E4024: Just a question - do you use Google Image Search or Tineye to check these files for copyvio first? Gbawden (talk) 09:17, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
I use Google Image Search. Some DRs do not require any search though. Now please look at the one I will open in a minute. Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 13:31, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
Sorry, I opened "two" DRs in a minute. (As clear copyvios they should better be speedied but I must leave behind some "better" DRs also. :) After looking at them please also look at File:Khoren Doghramajian .jpg. Do you think it needs any internet search? Me, no. (Especially when the uploader is a a known copyright violator who never makes an effort to defend their uploads.) I may return to this issue later if I am still around. Take care. --E4024 (talk) 13:59, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

File:Jerry B. Brown.jpg

Hi Gbawden. Would you mind checking File:Jerry B. Brown.jpg? You deleted a file with the same name about a week or so ago, and this might just be a reupload.

I can’t see the old file’s page, but this one does seem to be making a claim of permission being given by the copyright holder(?), but it doesn’t seem to be a type that Commons accepts. It also doesn’t seem to be a selfie, so the subject may not even be the copyright holder. The same uploader also seems to have reuploaded File:Eden Fresco, Chapel of Plaincourault, c. 1291.png, which is another file you previously deleted.

FWIW, these might be OK if OTRS verified, which is why I didn’t tag them as copyvios. — Marchjuly (talk) 22:05, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: Hi. Thanks for checking - I think you did the right thing tagging it like that. I left a note on their talk page about the need for OTRS. Lets see what happens Gbawden (talk) 07:26, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for posting that on the uploader's user talk page. They appear to have a connection perhaps even a paid connection to en:Draft:Jerry B. Brown; so, OTRS permission shouldn't be too hard to obtain if the copyright holder of the photos is indeed Brown as is being claimed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:15, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

Sandesh Lamsal 1.jpg

Would Like to request you to restore the Image File:Sandesh Lamsal 1.jpg , which was deleted with a reason F10 "Personal Photo". The article by this name is on the process of under construction, I am gathering all the reliable articles about the subject published on the net. It is not just the personal photo. Please see the article about him on IB times India here there are various sources, which can be seen on google search also.

Thank you. HowCanYouDoThisOnWiki (talk) 21:54, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

@HowCanYouDoThisOnWiki: Hi. A couple of things. 1) You requested that the photo be deleted - so I am confused why you did that and now want it restored? 2) The flickr source you quoted is a flickrwashing account - see COM:LL - so that pic would be deleted as a potential copyvio anyway. You can only upload photos that are freely licensed. 3) That claim to notability is tenuous - that article is a puff piece and self promotional Gbawden (talk) 06:34, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
@Gbawden: Thank you for your response. Yes because of the wikipedia article{as it looked a puff piece and self promotional}, I requested you to delete it so that I could rewrite the wikipedia article in a good manner. If you were questioning about the article published about the subject, Dear Respected Sir, I am not the part of IB Times Sport desk. I can't control journalists what to write and what not to. That photo has also been removed from flickr now. Can I upload it normally as my own work, as there is not a single copy on internet now? I am really very grateful for your guidance sir. Thank you HowCanYouDoThisOnWiki (talk) 07:18, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
@HowCanYouDoThisOnWiki: You can only upload photos you took yourself. So you would need to upload the file straight from your camera, any doubt about whether you took it or not will result in the file being deleted Gbawden (talk) 08:56, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
@Gbawden: Thank you very much for your suggestion sir. I have uploaded his photo that I took myself, right from the wikipedia uploader. Please check it here. I am really very grateful for your support and guidance sir. Please sir, let me know or correct it if anything wrong I did there. HowCanYouDoThisOnWiki (talk) 12:12, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
@Gbawden: Sir thank you for your moderation on the edit war. Now all the points between us have been cleared. The copyright issue has been solved. No further discussion is taking place about the image from past 6 days. And it’s already have been about 2 weeks from the nomination. So, with all my respect and humbleness I would like to request you to help in removal of Deletion Tag from Wikidata and Commons. Thank you again for your guidance and efforts for making Wikipedia a better platform. HowCanYouDoThisOnWiki (talk) 11:27, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
@HowCanYouDoThisOnWiki: Please be patient. An independent administrator will review the DR and delete or keep as appropriate Gbawden (talk) 11:35, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
Okay sir, Thank you. I will be waiting for it. HowCanYouDoThisOnWiki (talk) 11:44, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

Would you mind giving a look to that old DR and closing it one way or another, if you feel comfortable about doing so ? It gives matter to a protracted discussion on the French project. Thanks, — Racconish💬 17:06, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, appreciated. — Racconish💬 10:17, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
@Racconish: no problem. Sorry for not saying anything sooner but was a bit busy this morning with other stuff Gbawden (talk) 10:39, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Gbawden. Thank you for closing this DR. As this file File:Guan Tong - Drinking and singing at the foot of a precipitous mountain - 57.194 - Museum of Fine Arts.jpg is also part of this DR and remains undeleted, could you delete it as well? Thanks. --Wcam (talk) 13:39, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

DR concern

Hello @Gbawden: I see that the file has passed the DR and it's being saved from deletion. I appreciate your efforts. But the files has many concern which was pointed out in the DR. As the volunteer editor is not Autopatrol, has not contribute constructively, the video link is not available, the old uploaded video of the channel has been removed, the channel has been changed or updated. I'm aware of the YouTube Cc license and also the archive link which is available in the file show it as YouTube Cc but we can't review the file. So I'm not sure that we should trust the file. If you could guide me that would be a great help. Thanks for your consideration --C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 13:58, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

@C1K98V: Hi. I would add the archived link to the source and base the license review on that. Its not an issue that the video was removed, CC licenses are irrevocable and we can prove the license with the archived link. Gbawden (talk) 14:47, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
Yes I'm aware of the fact that YouTube CC license are irrevocable and if their is any changes then it is displayed with appropriate tag in the file too. Thanks --C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 06:14, 26 November 2020 (UTC)

I don't mind the deletion as, the article that I wrote on the person was not accepted citing "Self Marketing".

Once the article is ready to be published, we can add the necessary image. Vasudharini (talk) 12:55, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Deletion of nonsense images

File:Bihari Rajput villagers watching Mallah fishermen.jpg and File:An elderly couple belonging to Koeri caste.jpg both these have no content relevant to wiki. These images have improper names than what is depicted in the image. It appears the contributor wants to use wikicommons as an instagram page as these pics are suited for such platforms. Shouldn't these images be considered for deletion? Bharti Asthana (talk) 14:48, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Maiah Wynne inside a garden

This image was released via the license with the Wikimedia OTRS release generator by the author himself. I sent the OTRS generator to the author to sign the release generator as per GoingBatty's advice, who also helped contribute in the Draft page as well. Do you need an sent email from the author, I'm not sure what's the point of linking me to the OTRS generator when that was exactly what was used in the first place.

@Chanri3571: Firstly please sign your posts with 4 tildes. There is no record of OTRS for this image - so you need to go through the process again or it will be deleted Gbawden (talk) 13:21, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

I am irritated

I made some Infoboxes on my personal talk page on Wikipedia, and then sent them to the alternate history Wiki Infoboxes post on alternatehistory.com forum for discussion. Then today you came and said that I was "copyright violation" and deleted all the pictures I uploaded and the information boxes I made. The most disgusting thing is that there is a picture of battleship I drew for myself, and you also said it was "copyright violation" and deleted it. I violated myself?

If Wikipedia’s upload rules require that every picture found on the Internet must be accompanied by a permission statement from the photographer, then I suggest that Wikipedia turn off everyone’s editing permissions and become the second online version of Encyclopedia Britannica.

@SgtRL-3: Please sign your posts with 4 tildes when posting
The battleship you claimed to have drawn was clearly marked (C) with the url of the forum it was found on. If there is any doubt we have to delete. You cannot take photographs from the internet and upload them to commons without a permission statement - that is one of the fundamental rules. Please read COM:L. Perhaps Wikipedia would let you use it as fair use but this is not Wikipedia Gbawden (talk) 13:40, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
@Gbawden: I am one of the members of Shipbucket Forum, and all of us share source material in our works, so it would have the url of this site.

Besides, please do not the flag and ensign icons I uploaded, it's vital to my infoboxes.SgtRL-3 (talk) 08:21, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

@SgtRL-3: Please comment on their deletion requests. But you need to read COM:SCOPE and COM:EDUSE Fantasy flags etc are generally out of scope and can be deleted, so best you motivate to keep them on the DR Gbawden (talk) 09:28, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Problem IA journal uploads ...

Thanks for closing Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:The Canadian field-naturalist, 2006‎.

It isn't an isolate example, and I'm sure I filed DR's for other years, and I'm finding categories for images in years that I hadn't filed DR's for yet.

I think now that the DR linked is closed, you or other admins would be justified in speedy deletion of other years of this and other post 1964 journals, especially those not of US origin. Other contributors have also "upgraded" some of the DR's I filed on other journals to speedy deletions.

As I said at COM:AN, in other circumstances, by this point a CCI may have been started, but I didn't think that was appropriate given the standing of the uploader responsible.

No doubt you are also aware of the backlogged category of related requests, see the parent category at the bottom of the DR you just closed. Category:IA_mirror_related_deletion_requests/deleted

@: , anything you think should be added here? I think you said at COM:AN that situations like this would be uncontroversial for speedy deletion. With that in mind I am wondering if there should be a note to admins, that essentially says that more than just speedy, categories that are obviosuly images from post 1964 journals (which would still be subject to copyrght), can be deleted on sight by admins, without the need for invoking a DR processes. Keeping a log of these for eventual undeletion in 60 or 70 or 120 years time would of course be useful though.. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:41, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

As said, the 'historical series' issue is not controversial, so long as a line can be drawn so that any initial publications in the series which are copyright expired are kept. What would make this more assured, would be some comments from interested sysops. So let's wait for that to happen. -- (talk) 10:57, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

From Pibwl

Thanks for notes. I'm aware that I can add photos to Category:Unidentified people, but I don't want to fill another unidentified category, whent they could wait forever. In fact I get myself to browse uncategorized images only from time to time, but when I do, I get annoyed when I see some unused photos of unidentified persons, without proper description nor clear notability, thrown in by some inactive uploader, who apparently does not show any further interest in them... ;) I usually categorize subject more interesting to me, most pictures I skip, but sometimes I can't refrain from desire to remove items, that are apparently redundant, since they wait for years, and nobody found them useful so far (btw, personally I don't understand how an experienced user can upload a batch of random photos from some photo service, and not categorize them for years...) Oguler743

Hey, giving you a head's up. Back in October you deleted a copyvio image uploaded by Oguler743 and it seems like they've not heeded any of the notices and uploaded quite a few more since then. Some were deleted, but there are still some remaining. I think that they may be a COI editor who is uploading with permission from the artist, who likely may not be aware that this would put it under a CC. In any case, I think that a block may be necessary here. It looks like they've done some copyvio on Wikipedia so I could block from that end and post a warning, but I don't know if that would impact them outside of English Wikipedia. Just figured I'd give a head's up. ReaderofthePack (talk) 05:38, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

@ReaderofthePack: thanks for being so alert. I have given them a warning per policy - lets see if they mend their ways otherwise they will be blocked Gbawden (talk) 05:59, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

DR and speedy

Which files got DR noms and then speedy tags? I'd like to know so I can avoid that situation (as I have tried to previously) are have a means of checking this when patrolling files.

Doing a petscan for the intersection of relevant categories did not reveal anything obviously dual taggged, so thank you for cleaning this up. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:55, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

@ShakespeareFan00: Hi. It was one of the 2 DR's of yours I closed yesterday. I sometimes use Visual file change to batch task deletions or tagging and that flagged it there. Quite a useful tool. I am away for a few days so won't be online. Happy New Year and keep up the good work! Gbawden (talk) 06:54, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

User:Norasky53

Hi Gbwaden.

You blocked this user for a week because they were uploading copyvios. Their response was herehere (which they've since removed). Then, as soon as the block ended, they went right back to uploading questionable files like File:Manith Jupiter in 2020.jpg. This file is pretty much the same one that they uploaded locally to English Wikipedia which was deleted as a copyvio. It's also the same as File:Manith Jupiter Profile 2020.jpg which was uploaded by another editor named "PPSOfficial" who has been blocked for sock puppetry on English Wikipedia. I don't know if the two accounts are related, but the this image is from Facebook and their no indication that it has been released under a license that Commons accepts; so, I tagged it with {{Npd}}.

An English Wikipedia administrator named JJMC89 is the editor who started Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems/Archive 89#Norasky53 then led to your block. JJMC89 does lots of work with files over on English Wikipedia and is pretty fair; in other words, it's unlikely that JJMC89 would remove a file unless he was quite sure it was a copyvio or a serious policy violation and JJMC89 has been removing this file each time it's been re-added to an article.

I'm not sure whether Norasky doesn't understand the difference between "freely available" and "freely licensed"; they seem to think that the two are the same when it comes to Commons which is why I only tagged the file with npd on the chance that they might be able to contact the copyright holder. I think part of the problem is that Norasky53 has trouble understanding English, at least at the level required for English Wikipedia editing. However, even if language is an issue here, Commons is multilingual and Norasky53 can ask for help instead of continuing to upload problem files. At some point, an editor having problems because of their uploads needs to ask for help instead of just continuing on as before and I think Norasky53 probably has reached that point and that additional warnings are probably going to not change anything. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:55, 29 December 2020 (UTC); [Note: Post updated by Marchjuly to replace user talk page link with diff since the post was removed after I made my original post above. -- 23:36, 29 December 2020 (UTC)]

Just going to add that they've also re-upload some album cover art that you seem to have previously deleted per F1. The ones you deleted were also tagged with "npd", but it doesn't appear that copyright consent was ever received. I probably should've just tagged the re-uploads with {{Copyvio}}, but didn't notice they were re-uploads until I'd already tagged them with "npd". Again, this editor either is not listening to or not understanding the warnings they've been receiving and doesn't seem to have asked for any help to try and figure out why their uploads keep getting flagged for issues. Maybe there's a Commons administrator who understand Khmer and can explain things in that language? -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:07, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
@Marchjuly: Hi. Thanks for letting me know. I have blocked them but will also advise them to ask for help if they don't understand what is going on Gbawden (talk) 09:00, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for taking a look at this. — Marchjuly (talk) 10:29, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

Hi Gbawden, I came across File:16.08.06 과학창의축전 레드벨벳 조이 (2).jpg which should have been deleted as a result of the above DR. However, upon inspecting the blog in question, I clicked on its Notice link and the author states that they "don't mind derivative works, logo crops, commercial use, etc" as long as the source is indicated. This falls in line with the {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} license the blog post is tagged with, as opposed to the copyright notice on the actual images. Given this, these files should be okay to host Commons, wouldn't they? Pinging the uploader 옐로보이. ƏXPLICIT 11:15, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

Are you able to address my post here: Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Numerous duplicate files for deletion? If so, please respond there. If not, who can? Ww2censor (talk) 10:59, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

@Gbawden - Hi. You deleted this file with no explanation on what was wrong with it, even though I carefully explained that the file was made available by the owner via Flickr, with the proper license and following the steps provided in the WikiCommons guideline. I need an explanation, I have no idea what was done wrong, so I have no idea what to do to correct it. Dribflow (talk) 18:54, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

@Dribflow: You received a notification on your talk page on 3 Jan that the file was up for deletion along with the rationale. The file was deleted due to flickrwashing - see COM:LL. The license on flickr is fake and thus the file cannot be kept on Commons Gbawden (talk) 06:33, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
@Gbawden: - but the license absolutely 100% isn't fake. The account belongs to the owner of the image. What is the conclusion that it is fake based on? Has anyone tried contacting the owner and establishing the truth of the claim? Dribflow (talk) 13:36, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
@Gbawden: - better yet, why didn't you tell me this in the discussion section of the image, so that I can react, explain, provide proof, or correct any existing mistakes? Why was I ignored in the discussion section for 7 days, instead of being provided this feedback? Dribflow (talk) 14:11, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
Here's a line from COM:LL "Finally, it is often useful to contact the source website (e.g., message the Flickr user) and politely ask where they obtained the image in question. Often the person who borrowed the image will be happy to disclose that they are not in fact the copyright holder, and merely copied the image from elsewhere." Had you done that, the owner of the image would have been happy to provide any proof necessary. Did you do that before deleting the image? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dribflow (talk • contribs) 14:14, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
@Dribflow: The discussion was at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Vladimir Lalić - slikar, muzičar, kompozitor - 2020.jpg but I see that you commented on the talk page instead of the main discussion page, which we don't normally check for. In future please comment on the DR page itself.

The concern raised by the nominator was "Newly created Flickr account with only one photo" That is a giveaway for flickrwashing and if there is significant doubt then the image can be deleted. I understand that we encourage users to create Flickr accounts for their photos but for every genuine case there are 20 who use flickr to launder licenses.

It is not up to the nominator or the closing admin to contact the possible owner of the photo. We simply don't have the time or capacity for that.
My rationale for the deletion was a suspected case of Flickrwashing. Per nomination means I agreed with the nominator and didn't have anything to add.
Although COM:OTRS process is more time consuming that uploading straight from flickr it does create a permanent record in our system that cannot be challenged once accepted Gbawden (talk) 14:59, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

CC releases of images downloaded from random websites

Hi Gbawden!

Per this and this, I assume that means the uploader does have the rights to release these images under a Creative Commons licence?

Off-wiki, I have used Commons CC-licensed material in various projects, but if people can download a picture off a website, upload it to here and release it under a CC licence because it's "too simple" to be copyrighted, or any other reason for that matter, then I'm going to need to revisit every single reuse because the attribution would appear to suspect in every case. Is there a discussion anywhere about how this policy works? Trey Maturin (talk) 18:06, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

@Trey Maturin: Hi. In the case of that BBC logo, it just consists of text which is too simple to be copyrighted. If it was taken from the BBC then yes it should be attributed but anyone could create their own - for example File:BBC logo new.svg which was created by the uploader. Anyone could take this logo and add Radio Merseyside to it. I'm not aware of a discussion regarding this but you can ask at the HelpDesk Gbawden (talk) 06:55, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Hey. You have nominated this file for deletion, but it is uploaded again. I believe the copyright infringement has not been remedied. Check, please. --Гдеёж? (talk) 21:53, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Files uploaded by User:CycloneFootball71 deleted

Hi Gbawden. I hope you are well. I have a friend, CycloneFootball71, who is a bit confused and upset about why you deleted his files. His explanation is below. I trust that his name is really Thomas, that he is a football player.

"Unfortunately I was pinged to the response, but they then closed the discussion before I ever could respond. There were actually a few pics that were deleted, not just one. It all started when I accidentally downloaded a pic and unknowingly uploaded it to commons from Nasa Worldview. That was by mistake, and I tried to explain it to the person who requested the deletion of those images. However, they then took the liberty of requesting that all photos of me be deleted, including one reason being that they couldn't find the data that I uploaded it to a camera. After that, I basically said on all photos that My relative sent them to me and I downloaded them for use on whatever ( I was still in school so I wanted to have them for projects or other things, so I decided to use them here because why not, I like football, so why not show that I actually play). When they were deleted, I was redirected to the thing where you can have a relative or someone else grant permission for photo use, but it is too late because that relative is no longer here, and so I basically don't know what to do. That, along with out-of Wiki things, and I just couldn't do it anymore. (Also to note, the person who nominated my pics for deletion never responded nor were they the ones who ended up deleting them)."

@Pierre cb: was the user who nominated the files for deletion. I am pinging them for their input. Destroyeraa (talk) 19:04, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

@Destroyeraa: , I am a football player, though I no longer am going to EWU. My name is indeed Thomas though.--CycloneFootball71 (talk) 19:25, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
@CycloneFootball71 and Destroyeraa: I don't have any thing to add. The reason for my request was given, it was left to other users and administrators to decide if it was valid. Pierre cb (talk) 01:51, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

@CycloneFootball71 and Destroyeraa: In one of your comments you said "Image was emailed to me by a relative" which makes me think you are mistaking owner for copyright holder. The copyright holder is the person who took the photo and they are the ones who have to give permission. You may own a copy of a photo - that doesn't mean you own the rights to it. See COM:L and if you have questions COM:HD is the place to ask. To host these files on Commons we need permission which can be sent via COM:OTRS Gbawden (talk) 06:21, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

See here, Thomas's relative sadly passed away. Thus, they cannot write an email to OTRS. Destroyeraa (talk) 19:37, 22 January 2021 (UTC)
