Concern regarding license

Hello there Russavia! I know you're an administrator here and I have a concern regarding the license of this image. It actually seems to be exactly this one. The person who uploaded the image, however, seems to have a username rather different that the actual name of the photographer. What do you think? --Jetstreamer (talk) 10:53, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, I have deleted it, as well as another image, as an unambiguous copyright violation. russavia (talk) 14:18, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Hello. You should protect this file until December 30, for the same reason given above. Meanwhile it is not protected, for which it was removed as a logo. Will be used again like it.wikiquote logo as soon as will be protected. Sincerely Raoli ✉ (talk) 13:19, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Raoli, I have indef protected it. Hope that helps. russavia (talk) 14:03, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Revision deletion

Hello, I see you're an admin and you're online right now. May I ask you a favor? User:Sunshi79 has uploaded these five files, but unwillingly revealed her real name in the EXIF data. The current versions have corrected EXIF data without her name, but she would like to have the old versions deleted. See User talk:Sunshi79#Did you take the photos? and User talk:Robert Weemeyer#Closed deletion requests, but old versions?. I would be very happy if you could help. -- Robert Weemeyer (talk) 16:41, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Polandball

I translated it into Bosnian move to someone more experienced.

I've heard of a Polish ball, can you explain to me what it is? what should be an administrator and a bureaucrat in the Commons?

Greeting! --Kolega2357 (talk) 16:42, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Names for uploads..

Hi, I'm adressing you as a "bureaucrat", as noted next to your username in the Admins' list - I'm not sure about the accurate meaning of that title though.. I'm experiencing an unpredictable difficulty and would appreciate if you put an end to it very simply. 4 days ago I published five move-requests for images I had uploaded long time ago - with the stated rationale of fixing spaces, capitalizations, script etc.. - while of course expecting that the mover-on-duty take these tasks as simple as they should be taken and plainly move the files to the specified new names, as follows:

The first one of the five was moved successfully – but the rest were all undertaken by another person who retitled those 4 files in a fashion that had nil to do with the requested names in the tags... Naturally I have sensitivity to this. So first I posted a nice, trivial request on the former mover's wall, so they can fix the thing quickly. But, I was surprised to find out I was irrespected . I then moved a step forth and texted 3 different admins with the same idea, adding the above list so these four images could be re-renamed hassle-free, but, I realized that the two who replied to me trended to rather develop a discussion instead of just perform the moves with all simplicity & overturn the harm that's done, as a obvious careful regard to me as the uploader. I have little interest in trying to understand the reason for that chain of operative functionaries' behaviour, but would honestly like to simply get those 4 files named with the names that I as their dedicated contributor have chosen for them.

I'm sure you'd not wait before just fixing this one with your tools so that I become a happy editor as before. Thanx. Orrlingtalk 06:24, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Orrling, thanks for the message. Being a bureaucrat doesn't give me anymore authority on such matters than anyone else with the admin tools or file mover permissions. I see that you haven't approached User:Jacklee who is the person you should be discussing this as a first step. Could you please do that first before seeking outside intervention on such things. Thanks. russavia (talk) 11:44, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
No, no. I avoid it. Hope you won't ill-judge me but I know with deep, genuine recognition that someone who can possibly approach file-naming in the way that-one user treated my works not to mention the actual organizational act of patently expressing such a tremendous disregard as a filemover to uploaders' simple requests won't be accessible to such themes that have to do with casual human nuances. I was thinking actually that as a bureaucrat you could see at least why the other tool-holders all refrained from performing my explicit polite repair request ,, But these four files, as an end-task, do need to be switched to the names that I specified for them.
Please do something so the thing can be attended to my humble satisfaction. Thanx very much. Orrlingtalk 17:16, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, but I have asked you to politely discuss this with the file mover in question. Please do that as a first step as outlined at Commons:Dispute resolution. russavia (talk) 18:42, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the reply. This isn't possible. I had throughout 3 years requested several file-renames, and in a 100% of these cases the files simply were renamed as I'd wanted. (Possible hint: 100% of the filemovers have trust in me) The case now is anomalous for me, the gap between my simple act of legitimately tagging the files with plain corrected names and the result is shocking, and I can't approach a filemover-rights holder that is treating filemove requests in such a remarkable way which has no words other than attending the requests on one hand and abusing them on the other. Kindly do neglect political formalistics for this sensitive moment and help this out. This is about four of my contributed images that now bear "names" that can't be lived with. Mass deletion requests on tattoos

Do not disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point! Generall questions (as the freedom of pictures of tattoos) shouldn't be solved by arbitrary deletion requests. Please stop this immediately! --Stepro (talk) 21:35, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Excuse me, please do not come to my talk page and in a most non-mellow accuse me of disruption. I am an admin and crat on this project, and I am well-versed in our policies. Refer to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Guilty of being delicious.jpg, which was DR'ed by myself on the same basis. Please retract your accusations of disruption. Thanks. russavia (talk) 21:42, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
I do apologize for the wording, but not for the content. (The German version is much more "mellow", there it's "please do not disturb" instead of "do not disrupt".)
In my opinion there should be a general discussion about the handling the tattoo pictures, and not many single deletion requests. YMMV. --Stepro (talk) 21:37, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

»the uploader claims to be the designer« and Source={{own}}.

So what a permission else do you want to have? All necessary permissions are given. There was a regular deletion request with decision kept. All seems to be clear, beside your edit which I really don't understand. --Stepro (talk) 21:46, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

The image in question was originally published at this link. This is covered at Commons:OTRS#Licensing_images:_when_do_I_contact_OTRS.3F under "I am the copyright owner but my picture has been previously published." Apart from the spammy userpage there is no evidence that the copyright holder has given permission or agreed to licence these for Commons. In relation to the Sparrow tattoo, this image has a PD template. File:Barbossa-tattoo-web.jpg is under a Free Art licence. It is best to err on the side of caution when images have been published elsewhere, and have permission verified by OTRS -- something I know all too well about in having obtained hundreds of permissions for photos in the past myself. russavia (talk) 21:59, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
I beg to differ in a strong way. The uploader is the author, like at thousends of other pictures. I see no reason to doubt about it. But our different kinds of view cannot be solved here, I guess. So let's see what will happen. --Stepro (talk) 21:31, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Buenas tardes, Russavia. Muchas gracias. Un saludo.

(En inglés/In English)
Good evening, Russavia. I write to you to request you that you restore the image "Escudodemoclingranada.png". The motive for the one that resigned was a mistake. By no means it violated no copyright; the web www.redjaen.es used the image that appears in Commons and Wikipedia, and not upside-down. This web also uses other Commons's coats in pages of other municipalities. I ask you to return the image. Thank you very much. A greeting. 81.34.97.193 10:34, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Lobo (howl?) 23:27, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Hello again, Russavia. This time I bring you more copyright violation issues. I found User:Carlosjavierravelo to be uploading copyrighted images belonging to others. More specifically, I have identified so far the following images to have been uploaded as if they were taken by the user himself (the source for each image is in parenthesis).

For the same reasons, I suppose the following image is also a copyright violation, yet I did not find the original source for it at Airliners.net.

Tromostovje

Hi! Per the 1978 act, architecture was protected for 50 years p.m.a. (see the link at Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Tromostovje). I'll try to get access to older works in the following week; however, even if architecture was protected for only 25 years p.m.a. in 1957, the Triple Bridge will remain copyrighted until 2028. --Eleassar (t/p) 10:39, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

I've checked the relevant acts (1957, 1978, 1995). The listed files must be deleted (except for the two that depict Kresija Palace and Phillip Mansion). See Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Tromostovje for further rationale. --Eleassar (t/p) 20:10, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for that Eleassar, I will go thru the DR and delete accordingly. Cheers, russavia (talk) 11:02, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for cleaning the non-free material. I just don't know why was File:Ljubljana2_058.JPG kept as DM. There are two copyrighted objects depicted, the Triple Bridge and the Prešeren Statue behind it. How does that make it de minimis? --Eleassar (t/p) 07:00, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Anyway, thanks for well-done work. I'll bear in mind your judgment about the DM's in my future nominations. --Eleassar (t/p) 16:37, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Russavia, you created the above template a while ago and tagged it {{OTRS pending}}. It's been raised at the OTRS noticeboard and I had a good look but wasn't able to find the ticket. I don't suppose you know the ticket number or can recall the subject line or something else that would aid searching? If not, could I trouble you to re-send it? Thanks, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:42, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

I remembered him about it on 20 September (here). He replied about one, but not about the other two. Trijnsteltalk 12:53, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Russavia, I merged a Ticket#:2012102510012425 relationed to a OTRS review made by you; you edited the file as done, but you did not close the ticket. Please do that. Thank you. +PrinceWilly 16:54, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Russian Embassy in Caracas

Best regards,

I'll be happy to find that picture, I live within a day's journey of the embassy, however, I'm planning a trip for November. I hope I have your support, if possible, for a picture of Venezuela's embassy in Russia.

Thank you very much. --The Photographer (talk) 14:45, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Is there any reason you put a speedy on that instead of deleting it yourself? Sven Manguard Wha? 16:02, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Must have been part of my usual "delete" file tirade on other projects. Not sure exactly why -- I do it from time to time. Thanks for deleting. russavia (talk) 13:07, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi

I think I might have sent emails to you at least 2 or 3 times in our time on wp commons and or en - and you have never replied, as far as I can remember, thats no big deal... but need to have a conversation now which I dont mind if its on wiki commons or en or off, but need to have it... I would appreciate some acknowledgement in WP:AGF - thanks SatuSuro (talk) 12:43, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi SatuSuro, sorry if I haven't replied to emails, I get so many each day that I don't always have the opportunity to respond to them nor read them all---got heaps of things going on. I see an email from September, and I can't do anything with it. If you need to discuss anything, then feel free to let me know what is up -- if there are privacy concerns or such, then email me and let know here that you've sent it. Otherwise feel free to leave what you need below. Cheers, russavia (talk) 13:00, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Yeah that was a pretty dumb one I think - I will send an email in a minute... SatuSuro (talk) 13:01, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

have sent it via the wp en talk point - hope it makes sense, I just think the interp of the particular policy in english has got brass knobs on it - hope we might find something... cheers for the mo and thanks for your speedy commons response - appreciated SatuSuro (talk) 13:11, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
No prob, I'll reply sometime today on email for you. Cheers, russavia (talk) 21:41, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Advice

Hi Russavia. Can you tell me what you think of whether or not User:Oxyman should be warned about uploading copyvios? I'm not sure about this since he has 70,000 edits, but his talk is pretty long with CSDs and DRs. I tagged a few copyvios from a batch he did last night, and I see there are quite a few recent CSDs and Drs on his talk. I'm used to warning people with far less of a contribution to Commons. Thanks for your time. INeverCry 21:29, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

I wouldn't "warn" them per se but more direct them to information on FOP in the UK, given that this is what most of their "problem" uploads consist of. We obviously don't expect uploaders to know every detail on every copyright issue, but if there is a problem in one aspect of their uploads, best to give them the required information and ask them to take it into account in future uploads. Hope this helps. Cheers, russavia (talk) 21:44, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I've left him a gentle message about this, and asked him if he'd like me to help with archiving his talk. These huge talkpages drive me crazy. He's nowhere near as bad as Hullaballoo Wolfowitz over on en.wiki though. ;) INeverCry 22:19, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Looking for advice

Hi,

I'm doing a fair amount of work with images, partly due to OTRS work, and partly because one of my WP goals is adding images to articles.

On a few occasions, I have need an admin, as I'm sure you know, because you have often answered the call.

I know it would be helpful if I were an admin, but I'm not sure whether I should run, so I'm looking for advice.

As you know, the OTRS permissions queue is backlogged. Sometimes, I'm in an OTRS mood, and try to knock off a few. However, it is very discouraging to work on old Commons requests, because they usually involve a deleted image, so I have to beg at IRC to get someone to undelete it. You've been responsive, but you aren't always there, and it is frustrating to spend an hour or so on a ticket. Frankly, I've started to shy away from the old Commons tickets, because it is too much hassle.

The second reason relates to my image work on WP. I've been writing emails to schools to ask for images. On more than one occasion, they have provided an image, then after I send them the permission form, they get cold feet, and I suggest that a lower resolution image might alleviate their concern. I don;t like to start with that offer, as most are willing to send decent resolution images. While the problem is caused partly by my own process, I want to make it as easy on them as possible, so I uploaded the image, add the descriptions, then send them a completed permissions form with the file links included. That makes it easier on the OTRS agents who are processing the requests (I don't process my own requests). I'm in one of those situations right now, and it would be much easier if I could delete the high res images I uploaded, then tell the provider they are gone, and they can send me the low-res versions.

The problem is, I don't know that I have enough broad experience at Commons to qualify as an admin. I know en.wp doesn't support the concept of an admin who promises to do limited tasks, either one has the bit or not.

I do spend a fair amount of time dealing with copyright issues, both text and images, but I feel more comfortable with US image rules. I'm well aware that the rules vary by country, but I'm not expert on any of the rules outside the US. (On the positive side, I know my limitations, and wouldn't get involved in non-US issues without getting up to speed. or checking with an expert.)--Sphilbrick (talk) 17:19, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Sphilbrick, thanks for the message. I am aware of your OTRS work, and the amount of times you need to bug admins on IRC, etc to undelete files because OTRS has been received. In these terms, it would be useful for you to have the admin bit absolutely. Whether you have enough experience, if you have a knowledge of issues relating to copyright (the main requirement), and a history of participating in deletion requests, or successfully nominating files for deletion, then I would suggest that you RfA. We don't expect admins to know every intricate detail of every issues relating to copyright -- there are some that even I am not full-bottle on, and hence stay away from. If you feel confident that you would have the necessary experience then please do RfA...from what I have seen of your work, I don't see any reason that I would do anything but support it. Hope this helps? :) Cheers, russavia (talk) 13:05, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I think I will spend some time at deletion discussions, then apply.--Sphilbrick (talk) 12:21, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Can it be? Transferring most of the pictures here on the Commons, with the Serbian Wikipedia. Greeting! --Kolega2357 (talk) 22:04, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

FYI

I've left this note for Denniss since you haven't responded to my requests. However, my offer to process the ticket if you re-send it is still open—just let me know if/when you need me to find it. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:31, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Oh shit, thanks for reminding me on that. I will get to that this week. Am in overload at the moment. :) russavia (talk) 22:23, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Strasbourg

Hello Russavia,

I had an opportunity to go to Strasbourg yesterday, so here are the pictures you were looking for. Please feel free to change what needs to be changed.

As for embassies in African countries, I'm afraid you will not get all the pictures you wish to have, in many cases taking photos of military sites, official buildings, etc. is strictly prohibited.

Happy editing nevertheless, Ji-Elle (talk) 09:34, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, responded on fr.wiki russavia (talk) 12:59, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

OTRS...?

Note that Template:MaksymDragunov is deleted a few days ago as you never send the permission. Template:Angara is still open. Trijnsteltalk 20:16, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Africaspotter

You always seem to be looking for new photos of aeroplanes and seem to obtain OTRS permission from lots of people. You might be interested in the Wikivoyage image migration: User:MGA73bot2 is currently uploading lots of Wikivoyage images to Category:Files by Wikivoyage user Africaspotter, and it seems that a not too insignificant number of the images are photos of planes (at least among the first few uploads). Also, you might be interested in helping with image categorisation: all images currently seem to be uncategorised. --Stefan4 (talk) 16:14, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll let COM:AVIA know about this, and I might also drop Felix (Africaspotter) another note to invite him here to Commons. He's one of those photographers whom I have tried to get permission from in the past. Cheers, russavia (talk) 16:21, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Bloor Street bridges

Why did you move the Category:Bloor Street Bridge over the Humber River to Category:Bloor Street Bridge (Toronto)? There are many bridges over and under Bloor Street in Toronto and that was just one of them. Secondarywaltz (talk) 19:24, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

The move was done by Commons Delinker after being ordered to do so[2] by User:Skeezix1000. Unfortunately, there's no edit summary, and I can't see any discussion else, so I am not sure whether there was a request elsewhere for it. Could you possibly approach Skeezix1000 about this, and they might be able to remember. My only involvement was deleting the old category as I was cleaning up a heap of processed category moves. russavia (talk) 19:41, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Hi, Secondarywaltz. What other Bloor Street bridges are there that we could reasonably expect to see categories for? Frankly, I was just fixing the terribly named Category:Bloor Street Bridge over the Humber River. Maybe it ought to have been to Category:Bloor Street Bridge (Humber River)? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 20:16, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
I guess there is Mimico Creek. Is that an actual bridge or a culvert? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 20:19, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
The main ones in Toronto would be Prince Edward Viaduct (the most likely to be confused), Rosedale Valley, Bloor Street bridge at Mount Pleasant Road, Bloor Street West Bridge over the Humber River, Bloor Street bridge over Mimico Creek, Highway 427 and Etobicoke Creek. I don't think any have official names except the Prince Edward Viaduct, which is what many people might think of as the "Bloor Street Bridge". Most of the others appear to be called "Bloor Street bridge over xxx". Secondarywaltz (talk) 22:16, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
You're right. I don't think of the PEV being Bloor Street at all (but others could/would), but the others are admittedly bridges. I didn't think that through very well, did I? Especially, since I drive over those first three almost every day. "Bloor Street bridge over xxx" remains a poor form of disambiguation. Category:Bloor Street bridge (Humber River) and so on? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 15:02, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
Oh, you know much more about category formats than I do. A generic Toronto one just seemed wrong for the Humber River bridge. Thanks. Secondarywaltz (talk) 16:43, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
I doubt I know more. And a fresh eye is usually a good thing, as demonstrated by this case. Thanks. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 17:57, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
