Proposal closing

Hi :) Thank you for handling the close of the proposal. I did not think about it. Have a good day, ----Benoît (d) 15:20, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

Could you have a look, please

Hello Cart, I don’t want to get on your nerves, but because I am still learning to tame the FP galleries, I need some supervision ;–). I have gone onto my first inspection walk through the FP galleries, looking for unsorted (and misplaced) FPs. I have made a found in the Odonata gallery and have tried (a) to sort the unsorted photos into the right sections and (b) to apply the correct formatting to some of the captions – the last photos were sorted in the sections without formatting the captions. So, are these edits (more or less) OK:

  1. Sort “unsorted” FPs into their families
  2. Improve captions
  3. Improve captions

? Thank you very much for your help, --Aristeas (talk) 07:47, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

You have done well My Young Apprentice. :-) The edits look solid and good. The WikiData infobox or the first page you can backtrack any photo of a species to through the categories, are always a great help when you need to find the right section. You are always welcome here to ask when you get stuck. If there is something you simply can't figure out, ask and I can do the edit for you so you can follow what I did in the edit history and diffs. I'm not just abandoning a project I've spent so much time fixing, someone needs to take over and be taught how to do it. That is why I posted about this in the first place, instead of just quitting FPC and drift away.
Thanks for your tip about Slaunger's camera. I started searching online for used lenses and gear as soon as I got his first e-mail. :-) I also wanted to declare in some official way why another camera will show up among my photos. This would be a non-event for anyone else in the FPC gang, but the way I've been scrutinized during my time there, I'm a bit paranoid about what I might be accused of next. O_o --Cart (talk) 08:33, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you very much, Cart, for your nice answer and for your generous offer to help! Chances are good that I will need that help from time to time. The tip to look just at the WikiData infoxbox is very good, it speeds up the search for the taxonomy.
Doing my first edits, I have already learned that the FP galleries need much work, just as you have told me. The captions, for example, are of mixed quality; they are technically not necessary, but I think they are very useful for “normal” users who just want to browse the FP gallery. Now in the zoological and botanical galleries most captions are good – in most cases only the last entries need to be improved. (But even this is much work, of course, and I have to concentrate on moving of unsorted images to the correct galleries for now, so I will postpone the captions. I have seen that from time to time experts like Charles take care for the zoological and botanical captions, so I hope these people will help there if I wait a little bit. ;–) But in the gallery pages e.g. for building interiors etc., the captions are chaotic; often DSC filenames, user names, dates and other irritating stuff are used as caption instead of a short, clear description. A big spring cleaning seems necessary to make the captions useful for “normal” users; I hope I will find time for that. At least I am on firm ground in these galleries, I know more about architecture etc. than about biology ;–).
I already had to create my first new subsection on a zoological gallery page, because there was no section for the family of Megapodiidae yet; I hope I have done that correctly. All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 10:34, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
Aristeas, good strategy to leave the biology department for now. Those galleries are actually where captions are fixed from time to time by experts. They might even take time to group photos better too, like all squirrel photos together and such.
Sad to say I have usually been too busy with the overall structure and simply getting photos to the right page to do much finer cleanup, like captions. I have done some drives to get photos of the same building/town/lake in sequence and such, but the captions are a huge mess. Users often are too busy living in the "user world" they don't think about readers outside it.
The new section looks good. Often nominators will protest they can't add the anchor to the nom, when they nominate a photo of something with no section. I always point out that they should add it anyway since it tells voters that it doesn't exist yet and that their photo is the first in that section, therefore more valuable and stands a better chance of getting promoted.
Since the galleries have been created over time by so many different users, they are far from homogenous, that would take a major makeover to fix. So you just copy what you need from what's in the vicinity. Sometimes the category below the section will show up red when you create a new one. Not all things are categorized the same way, so you will have to hunt for the nearest thing and use it instead.
You should also be aware (Oh God, I'm just piling stuff on you. :-( Sorry!) that sometimes users who are unfamiliar with the FP system just add photos to the galleries. This is not done out of malice, they just see the gallery and think their town/country/whatever should be (better) represented. So they take the best photos they can find and simply add them. These are usually easy to spot for an FPC-er since they seldom hold FP standards, with tilts, lots of blown parts and no perspective correction.
And do remember to take a break from it now and then! :-) --Cart (talk) 12:17, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
Hint: Saw this and since it's not done with natural colors and she's got a mike in front of her plus the file description, it would be better suited for Commons:Featured pictures/People#Musicians and singers performing. Sometimes things that look good on the FPC page might not be the best. — ...aaaand I see now someone else had the same thought. --Cart (talk) 12:26, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you very much again for all your help and hints! Don’t worry, there can never be enough information ;–). I cannot answer to every item, but I try to “treasure up all these things, pondering them in my heart” ;–).
Please do not misunderstand my rambling about the captions as critique! The captions are not (only) your business, there are so many editors around here, everybody could have looked after the captions …
For now, I try to sort all “unsorted” photos into the appropriate galleries and subgalleries. This also helps me to become more familiar with all aspects of the FP galleries. And I will have an eye on all new FP nominations: it is definitely the best to check and fix the gallery link right when a photo gets nominated, comparing existing FPs is also a help for all reviewers. When I find some time, I will probably try to do a spring-cleaning of the captions in the architectural galleries, in order to polish them for the best of “normal” users; the biology department is for experts, right, there I will only care about the captions of newly added images.
All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 15:31, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
Update: Phew, most previously ‘unsorted’ FPs are sorted now into the subgalleries. The shells gallery page was the most complicated one; in this case I have asked the expert to double-check my changes ;–). --Aristeas (talk) 16:57, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
You are totally right to commandeer extra helpers. :-) I have done the same a couple of times when that seemed better. We can't know/do everything! You also have the advantage of speaking the same language as many of the users who don't know too well how to handle the galleries. I suspect much of the lapse in help sorting is due to the language barriers here. Thank you so much for your work! --Cart (talk) 17:06, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! Yes, that’s a good idea. The language can help. Probably we should try to empower some power users with more knowledge about the galleries so that they take care for their FPs there. I have tried this once, the answer was kind, so I should continue to give such friendly (!) hints. NB for myself: I must remember to comandeer extra helpers; delegating a task to the experts is often the best solution, it is also (when phrased correctly) a sign of esteem and appreciation, so all people win. (At least here on Commons. My cats are absolute experts in cleaning, but I never succeed in commandeering them to do the dishes ;–).) Best, --Aristeas (talk) 08:32, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
FYI: another plea to an expert. You have mentioned the “wrong” (non-FP) images which appear sometimes in the FP galleries, and from this discussion I have learned that there were many non-FP images in the FP categories. These were checked by XRay with a script, therefore I ask XRay if he has got an idea how I could also check (semi-)automatically all images on the FP gallery pages. Please don’t misunderstand this: I am sure that you have spotted every “wrong” image! But nevertheless I think it would be good to check all the old entries on the FP gallery pages, once and for all, if it is possible to do this in a (semi-)automatic way. Then I can feel on the save side and concentrate on checking any newly added images. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 09:12, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Aristeas, I will never be offended in any way about shortcomings in my work in the galleries. :-D I know there are plenty of things I have missed! I simply didn't have the time to always be there for it. It is designed to be cared for by the whole FPC community and not just one person. I realize now that your native language might be your greatest asset in this work. You also know the German social rules about how to ask nicely for help, something I have few clues about even with my heritage. The automatic check for non-FPs is an excellent idea! I hope someone can come up with something.
You may also run perhaps run into photos that are parked in two or more galleries. This is an old remnant from when the galleries also served as "categories" for FPs. I have weeded them out as I found them, but there might be some still around. Great work! --Cart (talk) 09:29, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
And I never want to criticize your (or anybody else who has taken care for the galleries) for any shortcomings, Cart! Now that I have gained some familiarity with the galleries etc., I understand that these pages are an endless duty; you have summarized it perfectly: they are “designed to be cared for by the whole FPC community and not just one person”. So I see that my long-time goal should be to arouse more interest for and more participation in the maintenance of these pages. Well, I am certainly not the best one for this job (I am more the ‘lone wolf’ than an expert for communication and advertising), but we will see.
Regarding language: You are right, German can be especially helpful, so I will try to make the best of this knowledge. (It would be nice if my English was better, but it will be sufficient, I hope. It’s only a pity that my knowledge of Spanish has gone rusty; I just use that language too seldom.)
Regarding automatic checks and duplicates: XRay hopes that he will find the time to check for non-FPs; that would be great. While I wrote to him, I remembered that I had once written a simple Python script for some more basic, but similar task somewhere. I have updated that script; now it gives me a simple, but up-to-date list of all FPs in all galleries. With this list I can easily find out if any image is placed in more than one gallery, so this check can be automated now.
There is one special case of duplicates: the gallery for modern black-and-white photos contains many (only?) photos which are also included in the topic galleries. I think this is OK because that B&W gallery is a special non-topical gallery. What do you think? All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 15:45, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Galleries, part 2

Aristeas, the B&W gallery is hardly used anymore, people would rather nominate photos in the topic galleries these days. It is kind of an "appendix gallery" now, not really useful, but still around. It's the same with the much debated 'Animated' gallery. There have been earlier galleries that are now obsolete and the images sorted to other Galleries, such as Commons:Featured pictures/Places/Panoramas (I remember the nightmare of sorting that one...). The page is kept as an archive but no longer used, and it has been removed from the FP template. (We even had the Category:Commons featured desktop backgrounds way back when.) Perhaps this should be done with the B&W gallery too. With the Bot sorting, you can't sort into two galleries and I very much doubt that manual double sorting would be maintained for long. But I guess you would have to ask for an OK from the FPC community before shutting down the B&W gallery and also perhaps move the 'Animated' to Commons:Featured media.

Most of the branching and adding of galleries and sections that I've done, have come to be after requests from users who think that something is missing or wrong. Taking in requests like that is also part of the job. If you can "arouse more interest for and more participation", it would be fantastic. I tried several times, but it never worked. People were only too happy about having a "cleaning lady" doing the work for them. Once when I asked for help with this sometimes monotonous work, I even got a not-so-kind comment that I shouldn't do a boring work and then complain about it. A typically male comment, from a man. Some work just needs to be done, and it is done by people who do it just because someone needs to, or things will just fall apart. It's the same sort of thinking that makes many women take care of the cleaning at home, because they can stand to live in the mess that would be if this was left up to men to do at their pleasure. I kept going because I couldn't stand to see something I worked so hard on, just fall into disrepair and clutter. Ok, I'm ranting, I know. Sorry!

There will also be times when people try to add old galleries on the nominations, pages that have long since been branched off, like Commons:Featured pictures/Objects/Vehicles and Commons:Featured pictures/Places. One more "pondering to treasure up". ;-) --Cart (talk) 16:42, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Cart, thank you very much! I have discovered these obsolete gallery pages yesterday, including the notorious Panoramas page, and your explanations are very helpful for me to understand the history and nature of these pages. I must be aware of them because (as you say) sometimes the bot still places an image on one of these pages (I have found one photo of a building lost on some of these obsolete pages, where nobody would see it, and moved it to the correct page). The B&W gallery seems still to be in use, at least a bit, so I will handle it as a special, but valid ‘double use’ gallery page for now.
Further branching and adding of galleries and sections will come, I understand, and I see some room for improvements myself. But for now I will just act stupid and keep most structures as they are ;–). I would rather like to polish some corners (like the captions in the architectural galleries) than to change big structures; because one thing is clear: there will never be a perfect order or ontology for the FPs or similar collections, every improvement can be seen as a deterioration by someone else.
Regarding the ‘cleaning work’ etc. and its low reputation: you are not ranting, you just describe reality. This is how it is, yes. All kinds of care work, from cleaning to nursing, is despised. This holds true even for the most advanced kind of care work: here in Germany the nurses had to bury the main burden of the first, second, third Corona waves, they had to work 24/7, and when they left the hospital after endless days for some hours, completeley exhausted, they were told by their neighbours: ‘Corona does not exists’ or ‘You are a slave of Bill Gates’; and it took the gouvernment months until it granted the nurses a ridiculous reward of some €, instead of finally raising their regular salaries and improving their working conditions. And there is a diabolic association between the discrimination of women and the discrimination of all kinds of care work: care work is not respected because it is ‘women work’, and women are not respected, among many other reasons, because they ‘do only care work’ or ‘only keep house’. My wife, minister of the Lutheran church here, has told me that some of her male colleagues fear that the reputation of the clergy will degrade soon because we have more and more female ministers and less male ones: “Soon people will treat us like the charwomen”, these men say. No comment.
Yes, take a break and enjoy the summer! That’s a good idea! Forget old Commons for some days, forget (if possible) us stupid men, and if you really want, take some photos ;–). All the best for you, --Aristeas (talk) 17:35, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

I did not find a really nice ‘summer’ photo in my files – obviously I am mostly an autumn photographer – so please take this just as a hint and imagine the summer you are hoping for. I wish you marvellous summer days, enchanting dawns and beautiful dusks, the songs of birds, the rushing of waves, happy moments, pleasant discoveries and refreshing surprises, inspiring encounters and encouraging conversations, relaxation, peace and luck. --Aristeas (talk) 17:54, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Happy birthday!

It's your birthday! I hope you're having a very special day today. Thanks for all your wonderful contributions here on Commons! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 17:22, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Hahaha! Thank You! The risks of being a "public" person, you can't escape your age. Rain and thunder here much like in the rest of Europe, but yes, it's been a good day. Still hoping Slaunger's camera will turn up here in Lysekil eventually. The Swe-Dane mail service seemed fit to send it to Lübeck and no-one has heard from it since. Fingers crossed. All the best, --Cart (talk) 17:43, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
You're welcome :-) What's the background on the camera? Warmly, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 17:45, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
The incredibly kind and generous Slaunger has bought another camera, better suited for his needs these days, and he is lending me his old camera for an undefined period of time. He contacted me in the beginning of July and asked if I had use for it. I mean: Yeah!!! He shipped it from Denmark to me a couple of days later, and now it is missing. The ins and outs of this three-country debacle has been, as he so rightly described it: Kafka-esque. --Cart (talk) 17:57, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
Wow, that's very kind indeed. Sorry to hear that the camera didn't arrive though. Hugs, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:12, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

so many jellies

similar

What are your feelings about jellyfish? A fan? Morbid fascination? Convenient subject? — Rhododendrites talk22:02, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Rhododendrites, short answer: they are the birds of the sea. All my life I've been more fascinated with flora and fauna under the the water that over it, but it wasn't until I moved here to the west coast that I had a chance to actually photograph any of it. Here the water is clear and full of life as opposed to the murky, life-less Baltic Sea surrounding Gotland. Having access to underwater photo ops now, I'm making up for lost time. Jellies are beautiful, graceful and near the surface so yes, convenient subjects. It's also an area where not many other Commons photographers take high quality photos. As you know, I like to fill in the missing pieces when I can, and that made it even more fun to pursue these little critters. I admit I went totally overboard with the bluefire jellies, but there were almost no good photos of them at all here and no free photos to be found online, so when they eventually showed up for just one evening, I decided to make the most of that opportunity so we could really boast a good free photo library of them.
Since I've worked with other image repositories before, I may have another angle than many other photographers here. If you look at how say en-wp treats photos for articles, they are happy with just one perfect photo of some animal or plant. But if you look at Shutterstock, Alamy or any of the major photo providers, they pride themselves with presenting lots of versions of the same subject so that customers can really chose the photo that suits them best. That is what I want for people who use Commons too, our "customers". Commons serve a lot of wikis and projects and tastes vary, so every editor on the planet might not want the exact same photo.
If you do a search for "bluefire jellyfish" on Shutterstock, you are offered 18 photos. Some of these are the wrong species, half of them are beached and dead and all the photos are really bad. Enter Commons: We can now offer some seventy-ish good photos of live blue jellies for free. Commons wins, the Wiki-projects reputation grows and I've just scored one point for the home team. I will probably do the same the next time I come across some new not-so-often-photographed subject. :-) --Cart (talk) 23:58, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Resurrected jellies

Thread was archived, but responding anyway.

they are the birds of the sea - I've tended to think of sea butterflies and sea slugs as the birds of the sea, but there's room for jellyfish there, too.

I certainly have no problem with lots of images of a given species/subject. I just left the message because I've seen you upload several pictures of jellyfish over the last few years.

I have mixed feelings about jellyfish. On one hand, they're undeniably beautiful, weird, and captivating. On the other, they're evil and going to take over the world. If I had access to clear water with life in it I'd want to take pictures of them, too. Over the past few weeks I decided, during the no-birds summer months, to start pointing the camera downward and some insects. Butterflies, dragonflies, and wasps are the birds of the air nevermind that one is taken. — Rhododendrites talk01:56, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Rhododendrites, re "I've seen you upload several pictures", I could say the same about you and protests. :-) I think many of us photograph subjects in our vicinity that we have access to and think are worthwhile documenting for Commons. Lysekil isn't exactly brimming with events and protests so I have to find other things to specialize in. As soon as you start photographing something other people are not, it will get noticed. Also, since jellies are evil and will take over the world, it's important to study and get to know the "enemy". Right? ;-) Seriously, I've seen my jelly photos also used on (non wiki) pages related to climate change and ecology, so I'm happy about that.
Now fully vaccinated and with some restrictions lifted, I'm itching to try out some street photography and I'm reading up on it. It will probably be a lot of trial and error anyway.
Btw, if you want to see something "funny", take a look at the PostNord link I sent you for Slaunger's camera. It's been in the mail for almost a month now. It recently surfaced in Sweden and is now pinballing around western Sweden thanks to the incompetency of the mailing system here. I have lost count of the number of times we've been e-mailed and phoned PostNord by now. I just pray that the camera has survived bouncing around on trucks all this time. --Cart (talk) 07:41, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
I could say the same about you and protests No doubt. Brooklyn isn't exactly brimming with wildlife (well, apart from the birds) so I have teo find other things to specialize in. :) Really, though, photographing protests was a small way to feel like I was "doing something -- anything" after the 2016 election. When I saw that they started getting a lot of use outside of Wikipedia, too, that was good motivation to keep trying. Too often they were at times or in places I couldn't attend, and I ran out of steam for a while until the events of last year. A pandemic meant I didn't want to take the train into Manhattan but I could walk to places in Brooklyn and try to get some shots. At the moment I'm not feeling a particular drive to go do that documentation, probably because, well, there's less of a desperate grab to "do something" now, but I'd still show up if I heard of an event near me...
I like the jellyfish pictures, in case that didn't come through. :) Yes, know thy enemy. I'm hanging out with some wasps lately, after all.
Sorry to hear the camera is still, well, bouncing. How frustrating. — Rhododendrites talk14:30, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Borrowed camera finally here! :-)

The camera that Slaunger is kind enough to lend me has finally arrived! :-) After more than one month (!) on the road. The Swe-Dane postal “service” is really something… First it was sent from Denmark to Lübeck in Germany and was lost for a couple of weeks. When it resurfaced and came to Sweden, it was misplaced again and sent on a grand tour of western Sweden, before finally arriving in Lysekil. I thought it best to post about this here, and 'ping' a few good men trusted users (Frank Schulenburg, Rhododendrites, Aristeas, Daniel Case, A.Savin), so you know why another user’s camera id will eventually start to appear on my photos. It will be some time though, lots of new controls to learn. Yay fun! --Cart (talk) 19:15, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

Congrats on the new "borrowed" camera! I'm a little jealous of your camera's sightseeing vacation... — Rhododendrites talk19:30, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
It's a shame PostNord's staff didn't take photos along the journey, like the travelling gnome (popularised in the film Amélie). -- Colin (talk) 10:38, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
R & C: Or we could have had some peephole for the camera to record what was happening, sort of like what Mark Rober does with his "porch pirates packages". :-) (Btw: don't miss his squirrel "proof" birdfeeder videos! :-D) --Cart (talk) 11:05, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
When I was in high school some friends and I did the traveling gnome thing with some stranger's gnome in my friend's neighborhood. It was the least exciting gnome adventure, just kind of taking it with us as we did normal stuff around town. As it was pre-Wikipedia, I didn't know traveling gnomes were a thing and just thought my friend had a great idea. I can just imagine the gnome owners' disappointment if they knew where other gnomes had gone and then saw pictures of that one at, like, the gas station down the street, and at a chain restaurant, at the mall, etc. :)
Rober's videos are great. I've seen those two. The carnival scam science one is another good one. — Rhododendrites talk12:26, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
Congrats by me, too! I hope that the camera has survived its Odyssey in a good condition and will soon help you to catch many more great views and moments! --Aristeas (talk) 20:10, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
I am so relieved that it finally reached its destination! I have not used it for several years, so why not put it to use again in competent hands? Good luck with it! -- Slaunger (talk) 20:25, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank You! :-D I will take good care of it. I'm sure it will inspire me since it has lots of good vibes stored in it. :-) --Cart (talk) 20:33, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

QIC nomination

Hi, Cart!

I hope you're doing well. I nominated one of your photos at COM:QIC, and it's going to CR. Have a look at the nomination if you like.

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:30, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Ikan, yes I'm fine. Busy learning how the new camera works among many other things.. Oh dear, please withdraw that one. The halos and the processing are horrible! It was one of the very first test photos I made with the new camera (see post above), before I got the settings right in Lightroom. It will take some time before I've got everything under control with new buttons, knobs, dials, lenses and whatnots. I would rather you didn't nominate my photos at QIC or FPC. I haven't been active on QIC for years and I'd prefer to not get dragged into that (or FPC) as any nom will inevitably do. I'll see if I get around to do a proper processing of that photo if I feel like it, but it's not something I'm going to do right now. Be well, --Cart (talk) 17:06, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
OK, I will withdraw it. Enjoy the new camera! -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:38, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! <dry wit> ;-) --Cart (talk) 18:06, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Moving FPC

(text copied) "Hi! It is never a good idea to rename and move files during a FPC nomination. You have to fix all the code on the nomination page too, otherwise the FPCBot will not be able to properly process the nomination. I have fixed that for you now. In the future, it's best to do the file move before or after the nomination. All the best, --Cart (talk) 09:49, 20 September 2021 (UTC)"

I understand thank you. Gzen92 [discuter] 09:51, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
File:Emosson Construction.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Greetings and notice about images used

Hello Cart, I hope you are well!

I design and typeset the newsletter of a parish and always need beautiful photographs for it (so that it doesn’t become a desert of text) which correspond to the respective season and the subjects of the issue. For the autumn issue, I have used three very beautiful photos of you, among others. If you are curious, you can find a PDF of the autumn issue here. Your photos are on page 5, 8, and 11; the image credits are on page 5, I hope they are OK for you. (The printed newsletter was published in October. I have only now got around to creating and uploading the PDF for the internet, hence this note comes so late.) If you would like a printed copy as a specimen copy, I am happy to send you one – just email me some postal address to send it to.

Thank you very much for your many wonderful photographs and all the best --Aristeas (talk) 16:14, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

PS: By some strange coincidence the PDF link seems not to work right now. It did work one hour ago, so it seems there is some issue with the server. I hope the link will work soon again. Else I can also upoad the PDF elsewhere. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 16:16, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
Hi Aristeas, Thank you so much for the link. It worked and the newsletter looks really nice! I'm especially glad you found use for the hedgehog, I'm very fond of that photo. Everything I upload on Commons is meant to be used, so I'm delighted. In my small capacity as editor off-wiki, I know how great it is to have this library at one's fingertips. I was very pleased to see that even an institution as venerable as the London Natural Museum, is happy to use Commons images along with photos from Shutterstock. Links in this diff.
I'm well, if a bit stressed now before Christmas. Most days I'm chained to the workbench to keep up with demand for sparkly gifts. I always look forward to the days after New Years Eve, when all the craziness has subsided. All the best, --Cart (talk) 17:15, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
Hello Cart, thank you very much for your kind answer! (I did not see it earlier – seems the ‘Alerts’ feature somehow did not work for me today.) I am happy to hear that you are well in these difficult times!
Yes, Commons has become a very valuable media library; I am happy to use it. Sometimes it is not easy to find what I am looking for (as we all know so many files are insufficiently described and categorized, and the tidy-up work will never end). But most times I am delighted about what I find in the end, so e.g. in the case of your hedgehog photo. I like it very much and you really can be fond of it. We have hedgehogs here in the garden, too, but I was never able to take a usable photo of them. And your photos of agriculture are very useful, too; this is another nice thing about Commons: When we upload a photo, especially some of an everyday subject, people may use it for far more things than we imagine.
I wish you all the best for the remaining stressful time until Christmas, and a restful and refreshing time in the first quite weeks of the coming new year. All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 18:08, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
Aristeas, hopefully you get the notification for this comment. I just have to tell you that the hedgehog photo was possible only because I had Slaunger's camera. :-) I can't tell you how grateful I am for it! With my own cameras I could never have taken that photo. The hedgehog was making its nest deep in the shadow under a big bush by my mailbox. As you can see, I had to go for ISO 800, and there would be no end to the noise this (plus the shadow) would have created with my cameras. Instead I got a perfectly acceptable photo. Yay! I am doing a lot of photography of subjects that have previously been off limits for me. One dark night I even managed to catch a faint aurora over Brofjorden!! It's one of the things I've longed for to try for years. :-) Not FP-quality at all, but a great thing for me.
Totally agree that it's not always the most exceptional photos that gets used most, there is a much bigger demand for really good photos of rather ordinary things. A point I have tried to make at FPC, and failed of course. ;-) My most used photo outside the Wiki-verse is actually that of a refrigerator. Mocked at nom as "So? It's a refrigerator."
On a related topic, I saw your comment on a current squirrel nom and removed the watermark on this. :-) I'm very happy working with this and that, out of the spotlight. I feel I'm contributing more to Commons and the Wikiproject that way, than squabbling at FPC. Best, --Cart (talk) 18:42, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
Hello Cart, thank you for your answer – and for your highly inventive “manual notification” :–). I saw it immediately this morning, so it worked perfectly! However, it has made me think all the day how to answer in an adequately witty manner – and it must be said to my shame that all day long I had no good idea. I did some long-delayed maintenance on the description of my photos today and was hoping to come up with something in the meantime. But that was not the case. In the end I have no choice than to answer just in plain words. Therefore, after a day of no ideas, this stupid answer. Sorry!
And yes, I think you are right that working on the real files, importing useful stuff from Flickr, retouching some useful photos, improving description and categorization is, in the end, more useful for Commons and its users than the discussions at FPC. So you do definitely do more good for the project than many other users – I can just say “thank you very much!”, as your careful everyday work on Commons is rarely appreciated enough. Similar to “real” life, it is often the less visible contributors who do the most valuable work. ;–)
All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 18:57, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

Greeting

A quick hello to you and I hope you'll be back in FP soon. A big hug 😃 --Commonists 23:17, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

I know you mean well and it is kind of your to think of me, but I'm happier working with other things than FP so I will not be back. Also, sorry, but I don't do hugs except with my family. All the best and be well, --Cart (talk) 23:38, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
I'm glad you're doing well and enjoying what you're doing. The hug was "virtual". Greetings--Commonists 23:45, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
Virtual or not -- sounds kind of mauvais ton I think... --A.Savin 02:51, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
I don't think--Commonists 23:24, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
Thank you A.Savin, for putting such an eloquent expression on this. I know people write such things out of kindness, but I always cringe a bit at this level of familiarity that people employ so readily online these days. Sometimes I go along to get along, but there are other ways of expressing sympathetic emotions. I am a physically reserved person, and since it's quite possible I will meet Commons users at some Wiki event, I don't want to give the impression that it's ok for people to fling themselves at me IRL. All the best and warmest thoughts to you both, --Cart (talk) 06:43, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
It was just a saying that is often used here. Greetings.--Commonists 23:24, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
Yes, I know. I just don't like when it's used at me, but no hard feelings. Just saying. --Cart (talk) 23:33, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
Now I know, don't worry. Cheers. --Commonists 19:34, 22 December 2021 (UTC)
