Aaero images

[edit]

Hi. You’ve removed screenshots and box art from Aaero’s page. These were used with permission. (I own the rights myself). Could you reinstate them please?

Thank you.

Could you please be more specific about files? You don't have deleted contributions.
Regular procedure for such cases is to send permission to Commons:OTRS (example: Commons:Email templates). Then you could ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review and file undeletion.

Deletion Request / File Ron Galperin.jpg

[edit]

I'm not sure why I received a deletion request. Even though the photo is found in Google search, this image is owned by the user?

Ron Galperin (talk) 18:41, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You could upload image in original resolution with EXIF to proof your authorship. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:48, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of File:Alarashi Salah FlagUp.jpg and File:AbdulKarim Abdullah Al-Arashi.jpg

[edit]

I have added a link to the permission for the File:Alarashi Salah FlagUp.jpg which was released by Aden news agency in 1990-05-22 - Under Yemeni law, all files released by media that are over 2 years old, automatically fall under the Creative Common license

A declaration of consent has been sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org for the file AbdulKarim Abdullah Al-Arashi.jpg

Thank you very much for understanding.

Looks like you are mistaken. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Yemen. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:58, 2 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
the picture is older than 10 years, 18 years to be exact which makes it legal to use (according to the link you attached). Besides that, I did link the permission to use the photo from Aden news agency upload in the

Arabic wiki. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aceat (talk • contribs) 00:20, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You need to fix license, description and provide verifiable source for this photo. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:52, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The declaration of consent for the file AbdulKarim Abdullah Al-Arashi.jpg has been resent - the picture was taken personally by a relative of mine whom I got to send the declaration of consent.

Please ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:52, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Calf Studio Gear Logo.svg

[edit]

What's the reason for this? Since I'm the creator of the file how can it be a copyright violation? --Drewbowls (talk) 12:19, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please confirm your authorship/copyrights ownership via Commons:OTRS (example: Commons:Email templates). Then you could ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review and file undeletion. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:02, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:OTRS#When_contacting_OTRS_is_unnecessary states contacting OTRS is not necessary in such cases unless there's some other reason [the] authorship may be doubted (since I don't think anyone would rate this ordinary logo of "outstanding quality"). It's this reason I'd like to know.--Drewbowls (talk) 19:03, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's not easy to tell about authorship in many cases. A lot of users upload non-trivial logos (see {{PD-textlogo}}) of sport clubs, educational institutions, etc. as own works. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:22, 11 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. Since the volunteers will also not be able to prove the authorship reliably I think it's not worth the hassle for all people involved. It was just about illustrating a Wikipedia article so nothing serious I should invest any more time in. --Drewbowls (talk) 12:37, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What was the reason for bringing up OTRS? Is this something we should do for every newbie uploading audio and video files? —Dispenser (talk) 15:42, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I just want to notify you that, while I closed the DR as deleted, it still remain this file, I'm neutral on this case. It is borderline De minimis because the photo could maybe, maybe not, have been taken without the posters. I closed the DR as deleted because it was an unuseful PDF file but I obviously did not answer your nomination rationale. Feel free to nominate also this file for deletion, if you wish it. No problem.

Category discussion warning

Polack District has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

How to get pictures

[edit]

I would like to insert some pictures in my german WP articles. Shall I ask by e-mail the owners of these pictures? If the owners (private person or museums e.g.) would agree by e-mail, shall I forward his answer to you? --Wagner67 (talk) 15:29, 17 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If you meant files which I nominated for deletion, they need to have proper source: author(s)/date and place of publication. They may be in public domain, but proper sources were not provided. Also proper public domain tag should be used as license. See also Commons:Copyright rules by territory. Files could be undeleted if you are willing to investigate these matters. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:34, 17 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Those deleted files I'm not interested any more in :-) However ... I thought having put the sources in those files?!? Weren't there the sources in? My new question today is about getting one of these pictures :

Изображения Fastcom

[edit]

Вот наша переписка: User_talk:EugeneZelenko/Archive22#File:Fastcom_12_login.png. User_talk:TRustRust. TRustRust (talk) 10:13, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

--EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:50, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
TRustRust (talk) 20:18, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Commons focus group update, December 11, 2017

[edit]

Hello! You are receiving this message because you signed up for the community focus group for Structured Commons :-)

Later this week, a full newsletter will be distributed, but you are the first to receive an update on new requests for feedback.

Three requests for feedback
  1. We received many additions to the spreadsheet that collects important Commons and Wikidata tools. Thank you! Now, you can participate in a survey that helps us understand and prioritize which tools and functionalities are most important for the Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata communities. The survey runs until December 22. Here's some background.
  2. Help the team decide on better names for 'captions' and 'descriptions'. You can provide input until January 3, 2018.
  3. Help collect interesting Commons files, to prepare for the data modelling challenges ahead! Continuous input is welcome there.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Hello, please help me: my pictures, that were decided to be kept, have been deleted: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_Sunshine76 What went wrong? Thanks, Claudia

I checked deletion requests and all files seems to be not deleted. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:35, 12 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've already dealt with this on JuTa's talk page.

I'm the grandson of the author and his sons (my father and uncle) had uploaded the file on his website for years without legal reprecussions after he passed away. I'm not able to contact the publisher, their website and email address don't seem to exist anymore. That leaves the oldest child of the author to hold copyright ownership of the work, who has been releasing the book for free (without any license) on his website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aumars (talk • contribs) 16:37, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dear EugeneZelenko, why are my uploads deleted? As for File:Art&Science_di_Matteo_Gelardi.webm, this is an original performance I myself have been organizing and playing out with artists and scientists in theatres and arenas since 2015. the music is all played live and the costs on copyright in Italy (SIAE) have been covered. File:The_dance_of_the_ciliated_cells_-_Matteo_Gelardi.webm was shot and edited with CC music by myself few years ago. They are both partecipating in Wiki Science Competition Italy 2017. What is the issue? Alexmar983 Thank you

--MatteoGelardi1957 (talk) 17:46, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you are author of all video elements or own copyrights on them, please confirm this via Commons:OTRS (example: Commons:Email templates). Then you could ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:59, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, maybe it is also time after this one to discuss also this deletion related to WSC2017 because the file was not so questionable. It was a diagram of a specific topic.--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:56, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that w:en:Scalable Vector Graphics is much better format for diagrams. That files were not used anyway. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:59, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it was used in the list of best uploaded files, which should give the idea that it was not crap... you have millions of old unused file and you start with a file that actually has content, welcoming this way an uploader who knows a specific field? About the svg format, the fact that a file is better in svg does not mean this is a reason for deletion per se... actually how can anyone put in svg if you remove it? Please link to me when this rule is written this way... I support good graphics but I also support good sense.--Alexmar983 (talk) 05:45, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
First files were not used. If they are really needed, uploader could provide them in better format. Also it's much better to explain about file formats to new contributors who may be active in future. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:48, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hi, admin, I just saw a DR of some pdf documents by you. Can you have a look at File:INSPAD Profile fromated 2013.pdf? I even added it to a proper category but am not sure if this organization is notable or if there's any need to have this file here instead of Wikisource or whereever else. Anyhow, I leave it in your experienced hands. Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 15:32, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Part of text seems belonging to Wikipedia. But copyrights status of entire document is doubtful. It's reasonable to request permission in Commons:OTRS in such cases. I nominated file for deletion. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:15, 19 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New upload of the sample file, of the song: Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

[edit]

Hi,

Please pay attention that a NEW AND ORIGINAL SELF MADE sample of the song: "Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up" has been uploaded to the Hebrew article of Youtube.

This new file has nothing in common with any sample of this song, found in any English Wikipedia's article, nor any other language Wikipedia.

Therefore, the new uploaded file doesn't violate any copyrights now, since its content and characteristics are completely different.

This is the link to the new uploaded file:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Rick_Astley_-_Never_Gonna_Give_You_Up2.ogg?uselang=he

This is Youtube's Hebrew article:

https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%99%D7%95%D7%98%D7%99%D7%95%D7%91

I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused because of the previous uploaded file, "Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up1.ogg", which was intended to be deleted, finally removed by me.

I ASK YOU, PLEASE, DON'T COSIDER DELETING THIS NEW AND ORIGINAL FILE, CREATED COMPLETELY BY ME.

For any question, I'm always available for you in my conversation page. (:

Thanks a lot and have a great new week, Yoel Zajac. ("Yoelpiccolo31" in Wikipedia)

Deletion Request

[edit]

Wondering why my photos are being charged with copyright if they are my own photos. I am not using them for promotion but rather writing a wiki article about a company. I uploaded many of these photos a while ago and their wasn't a problem then. Why is their a problem now? Hoping we can get this figured out! Had a problem with being to promotional before. I'm trying harder now and being more careful with the writing. Again, hope we can solve this! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eright (talk • contribs) 16:04, 22 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have done as requested and added the name of the composer and also the exact year the music was written. This has been completed for all the 10 tunes added and listed in your email / note. Please now review and undelete. Eds009 (talk) 19:47, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please use templates based on {{Creator}} and add missing ones for authors. You also need to mention performer. I'll restore files and reset request for source date, but you'll need to improve files descriptions. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:26, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Commons - Design feedback request: Multilingual Captions

[edit]

Hello! You are receiving this message because you signed up for the the community focus group for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons.

The Structured Data on Commons team has a new design feedback request up for Multilingual Captions support in the Upload Wizard. Visit the page for more information about the potential designs. Discussion and feedback is welcome there.

On a personal note, you'll see me posting many of these communications going forward for the Structured Data project, as SandraF transitions into working on the GLAM side of things for Structured Data on Commons full time. For the past six months she's been splitting time between the two roles (GLAM and Community Liaison). I'm looking forward to working with you all again. Thank you, happy editing. See above and below for situation with documents. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:08, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the images tags for docs. I understand the policy for images of public places and plates and agree that they should be deleted. What about this group photo of students in 1935? Who should give the permission? Armenius vambery (talk) 16:45, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think {{PD-RU-exempt}} is more appropriate for commons USSR documents like that for medals, since Russia is heir for USSR. Please mention that photographer is unknown, so work may be treated as anonymous. You could use {{PD-Ukraine}} there. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:19, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Armenius vambery images marked for deletion

[edit]

EugeneZelenko,

You have marked for deletion images, which I uploaded.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Armenius_vambery#Notification_about_possible_deletion

All images are mine taken with my own camera/scanner and marked as such.

Those from the https://pamyat-naroda.ru/ are marked as such and the ip right owner allowed to use with reference to the source. Confirmation by e-mail — Preceding unsigned comment added by Armenius vambery (talk • contribs) 16:02, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You could answer in existing section, no need to create another one.
Please read carefully description and license sections of files you uploads. Scanning/photographing of documents doesn't make you an author. License tags and descriptions need to be fixed.
EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:06, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ok. I will try. Sorry, use for the first time. Next time will try to use one entry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Armenius vambery (talk • contribs) 16:08, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

EugeneZelenko, did you even read the discussion page for the file? I explained very thoroughly why it should be kept and meets the free use clauses in the local English wikipedia. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fauquier_County_Public_Schools_Logo.png You deleted the file without an explanation. How come this file was deleted when other files exactly like it, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Fairfax_County_Public_Schools_Logo.png, and this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Langley_HS_logo.jpg, are kept? Airgum (talk) 00:54, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You should upload such images to projects that accept non-free content, like English Wikipedia. See Commons:Licensing. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:14, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image to investigate

[edit]

EugeneZelenko, you have recently marked my images for deletion. It was a right thing to do. Could you please take a look at this image and let me know if it has sufficient rights to be used? My understanding is that the author does not have the rights, the image is not in public domain, the image is not used by the same page in any other languages. https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A4%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BB:%D0%AF-%D0%94%D0%BE%D0%B1%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%BE%D0%BB%D0%B5%D1%86!_1943.jpg Should it be deleted? if yes how?--Armenius vambery (talk) 10:52, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This image is uploaded to Russian Wikipedia. Sorry, I don't know files deletion process there, but w:ru:Википедия:К удалению is used for articles. As for file itself, it claimed to be in public domain because of age as anonymous work. If you could find information about author(s) which died less then 70 years ago (see Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Germany). --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:17, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. The file which are in public domain in Germany have different tags. For example: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bundesarchiv_Bild_183-H27337,_Moskau,_Stalin_und_Ribbentrop_im_Kreml.jpg I will try to report the suspicious one. --Armenius vambery (talk) 16:28, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This set of files come from archive (Bundesarchiv), and this explain difference in copyrights tag. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:12, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The file came from Germany, but not from Bundesarchive. The source is indicated as Livejournal page, now not in use. Also it is not used by any German language page. --Armenius vambery (talk) 18:10, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

LiveJournal is definetely not primary source. If you doubt that this file is in public domain, you need to try to find information about poster author or probably photographer whose photo was used to create poster. If this person died less then 70 years ago, poster is not in public domain. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:16, 15 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Missing source?

[edit]

Hi. I'm wondering why you tagged this image as "missing essential source information". - Takeaway (talk) 15:46, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to be promo/press photo of supposedly notable cat. No EXIF, small resolution. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:49, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I tried looking for it online but couldn't find any other instance of it. It could indeed be a copyvio of some unidentified image from elsewhere, or it might be a low res image of the uploader's own cat. In any case, the uploader seems to be trying to pass off this cat in a hoax article as if it were the royal cat of Buckingham Palace (see this draft). Is the "missing essential source information" tag when there is actually a source indicated (even though it may also be a hoax) the correct tag for this image? - Takeaway (talk) 16:15, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Uploader could upload original photo with EXF to proof his/her authorship. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:21, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I drew it in the paint software on my computer, And you should pay attention to it, Because it's at the level of a painter. You could also make a photo copy to Google And see that the picture is not there And it's kind of annoying because I've spent some time painting it --Elad221 (talk) 17:00, 22 February 2018 (UTC)}: .[reply]

Hi, I convinced a photographer to use one of her picutures, but I don't know how to upload the picture correctly (Author). She doesen't have Flickr.

Please ask her to send permission to Commons:OTRS (example: Commons:Email templates). Then you could ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review. You should specify her name as author and use license she selected. But you should not claim this photo as your own word. Quick reply

[edit]

Re: your comment here, I have no idea how to do any of that stuff on Commons (my main work here is on cross-wiki copyvio issues), so I'm afraid I'm not much help. If you check my contributions, however, you can see I've fixed the sourcing to comply with Commons basic policy for inclusion for all the uploads by this user. Sorry to create more work for you if more work needs to be done, but I just was focused on saving them from deletion at this point. Also, you'll probably want to move File:O With Thy Benediction.ogg to something such as File:Thaxted (Holst) or something similar, as it's a tune that is use for many songs. TonyBallioni (talk) 15:35, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Art import from Flickr

[edit]

Files descriptions looks completely useless, since titles of works are absent. It's much better to use Creator templates. And Flickr use could not be an author of art itself.

It'll be reasonable to request bot operators assistance to fix descriptions of already uploaded files.

EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:33, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

--Thesupermat2 (talk) 15:49, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I don't know French :-( Please note that many of your uploads are ended in Category:Media without a license. Do you also plane to deal with duplicates? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:52, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't mind me butting in, Thesupermat2 is basically saying that they realize the descriptions are useless, but that they feel it's a good opportunity to move this artwork to the Commons and that little by little, contributors here will deal with the lack of titles and whatnot. So, no... I don't think they plan on dealing with duplicates. ALH (talk) 21:13, 8 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eugene, thx a lot for your hint on my discussion page. Sorry but i am almost helpless. i tried to find support there https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Grafikwerkstatt#Logos_&_Beschusszeichen_ein_gr%C3%B6%C3%9Ferer_Job and there https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Firearms#Need_help_for_commons_pics_of_Approval_Marks_and_Logos_of_Proofhouses and there https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Magog_the_Ogre#Approval_Marks_and_Logos_of_Proofhouses Sorrowfully i can only handle some pics and it takes me hours to do get along with them. Perhaps you have an idea to help in this case ? Best --Tom (talk) 15:30, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Just add request to vectorize images on Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop. But please try to find better resolution raster source images. If some of them originates from coats of arms (Austria? Royal France?) major part of job is done already. Just search for SVG coats of arms on Commons. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:37, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wonderfull to find a helpfull person in the end. THX so much. According the souces ... the official releases of authority’s have a poor quality. But i cannot use other sources. Pls. see a selection:

If only a part of all this signs could be transferred ... uuuhhh that would be fine. The correction of the descriptions could be a part for me to handle it. Best --Tom (talk) 15:49, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

In this case will be good idea to vectorize logos from documents, because Category:SVG coats of arms of Austria are much finer or have different proportion as in case with Category:France moderne in heraldry. Shields forms may be standard. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:03, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I am not able to vectorize. Sorry i am so poor in knowlege. I do a screenshot and save the pic ... sorry not to be state of the art. Very sorry. BTW the signs do not need to be with very high quality. Why ??? As original they were used to stamp in metall with a size of approx. 3x3 milimeters. Modern use is done with laser engraving. See samples. So it would be fine to have some more of the signs in commons. Best --Tom (talk) 16:16, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
As I wrote already, you could ask help on Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop. SVG files will be much more useful for lasers as well as Wikipedia articles/templates :-) --EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:20, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
On the legal side of view, it would not be a good idea to deliver samples which are good enough to be used for fake-markings. no no ... no good idea ;-) The signs are public to enable people recognizing the signs. not more. the enzyclopaedic use in articles can be as there: en:Proof_test#Proof_marks ir de:Beschussprüfung#Rechtsnormen_und_nationale_Regelungen . Could you do one request on Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop? Just as a sample that i know how to continue. Please --Tom (talk) 16:36, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. For all the images, I asked the artist to supply a release, and she emailed this as instructed. The SeaBreeze magazine upload was a mistake, and I asked for speedy deletion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Michedomi (talk • contribs) 18:31, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:15, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I did as you advise and received a note saying the wait for a permission review would be 49 days. In the meantime, the images have been deleted. The artist supplied a release and sent it to the right place. Please advise. Thanks. --Michedomi (talk) 22:39, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

File:Thomas Riley Marshall headshot.jpg

[edit]

Could you correct the caps problem on File:Thomas Riley Marshall headshot.jpg? The description say "Thomas Riley MArshall" note the miscapped 'A'. Besides, the picture is on the Wikipedia main page. Thanks, L293D (talk) 23:20, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Problem was fixed User:Howcheng. Actually you could do such fixes yourself, since file descriptions are regular wiki pages and it was not protected. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:10, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Possible deletion of image file Gordon John Watson

[edit]

G'day. I've been warned that this file may get deleted which I think is a bit over the top. It is a photograph which has been in my family since 1937 and I own it and all rights to its use. If you need me to make changes to the file information in order to prevent it from being deleted, I will need some assistance with how to do that. Any help would be appreciated. All the best. TheRealWatto (talk) 02:29, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Owning physical copy doesn't make you copyrights owner. You need to find out information about photographer. If photographer unknown it may be in public domain. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Australia, it it's applicable. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:18, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, This photo was removed for my benefit. This one photo to see is good. The other one to see boot screen. So this one photo deleted but unfortunately can not be seen and can not upload again because re-install my laptop and the other photo can not be published. What is the reason of the one and the other photo being deleted ?. — Preceding unsigned comment added by EverythingEpan User (talk • contribs) 08:35, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Eugene, Although I did everything that was requested, notably having a release (using the supplied template) sent from the artist authorising use of all images, the images have been deleted. This is very upsetting. You gave me eight days to comply, I did so, the artist sent her release to the address supplied, and then I contacted them (OTRS I believe) as you advised. and was told it would be a 49-day wait. Why give eight days when on Wikimedia's side the action or response takes much longer? Please tell me what can now be done. --Michedomi (talk) 22:06, 23 March 2018 (UTC)--Michedomi (talk) 22:35, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Did you ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review as I recommended on deletion request? If not, please do this now. Files could be undeleted if permission is OK. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:19, 24 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Lucio Balestrieri books and pic

[edit]

Hi Eugene, I'm Carlo Balestrieri, son of the late Lucio, an historian and economist. I'd like to diffuse his work with my mum and my sister. That's why I'm in the process of creating a page in Wikipedia snd attache a picture of him and I've uploaded his two books on Wikisource.

I'm new to Wikipedia world and I'm not sure exactly what to do.

I saw your notification for possible deletion and I'w writing to do as much as I can to avoid it. The items we are talking about are: File:Veneto.

The books are free to be used and copied as long as the author is acknowledged. The picture is a privately taken picture and it's ok for public decent use. When I uploaded them, I selected the most recent copyright licence which sounded

Please let me know of anything I can do to publish them on wiki.

BTW I can't even figure out how o publish the page on Lucio which I have drafted on my sandbox on 18 March. Could you please advise?

Thank you Carlo — Preceding unsigned comment added by CarloBalestrieri (talk • contribs) 19:44, 24 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If I understood correctly, you father died. Who did inherited his works (copyrights)? Such person(s) should send permission to Commons:OTRS (example: Commons:Email templates). Then you could ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review.
Who is photographer? If it was made in Italy, {{PD-Italy}} may be applicable. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Italy.
EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:07, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eugene, thanks for your feedbacks. I have now proceeded with emailing for OTRS Licensing, also put {{OTRS pending}} on both books files description. Also put {{PD-1996}} on my dad's picture. Finally I also confirmed my email address. Can you please advise if I can now publish my father page (countainig links to the above files) which is sitting in my sandbox? Thank you. CarloBalestrieri

I'm not sure that {{PD-1996}} is necessary, photo looks OK for now as it is. Please don't forget to ask for assistance on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 04:33, 29 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Eugene, be patient with me but I'm still unsure on what I'm supposed to do to publish the page about my father that is in my sandbox. I can't find the drop down menu that the help page says it's supposed to appear to move the page. Should I remove there references to the books while I wait for the License to come through? Please advise. Thanks --CarloBalestrieri

Frankly I don't know process in Italian Wikipedia :-( If there no formal draft reviews, you could just move page to main namespace. May be your account is still treated as newbie, so you don't have move rights? If so you could ask to do this local administrator. Or just create page in main namespace and copy content there.
I don't think that books should be part of biographical article. You could create category for your father on Commons and put photo and books there and then add link in article or Wikidata. Later is preferable.

Request to contact STL viewer developers

[edit]

Hi Eugene,

I note that you maintain a list of STL models uploaded every day. Thanks for doing that; it lets me see what new models people upload!

As you're likely more involved in the 3D initiative than I am, I wonder if you could point me to the relevant person(s) about a possible bug in the Wikimedia model viewer. I'd posted the following on the Computer help-desk but didn't get any replies:

I created a few STL files below and found that artifacts appear in the Wikimedia viewer and occasionally the thumbnail. I've checked that the direction of facet vertices is anticlockwise, the normals are sensible and polygons are not duplicated. It seems to happen more where the polyhedron is thin. All these polyhedra render correctly on http://viewstl.com . Would anyone know how to fix these artifacts?

Thanks,
cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 15:06, 2 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Actually lists are created by User:OgreBot, I'm only requested to create such reports, by analogy with other similar reports.
Since STL viewer is part of MediaWiki, I think https://phabricator.wikimedia.org is proper place to report its problems.

Thanks, EugeneZelenko. I've done so: cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 00:17, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

File:Anne Hillerman - Spider Woman's Daughter (2013).jpg

[edit]

Please help refresh my memory, because I do a lot of edits on Wikipedia and to a lesser extent Commons. I don't do a lot of uploading on Commons. On File:Anne Hillerman - Spider Woman's Daughter (2013).jpg, apparently you deleted this. I created the article but can't remember if I'm the one who uploaded the file. If I did, it should never been on Commons, but as a non-free use rationale (only) as a book cover on Wikipedia. I don't see this as one of my uploads. Can you clarify if someone else uploaded it? Would I be safe loading it on Wikipedia only under the non-free use rationale as a book cover? Thanks for your help. Maile66 (talk) 14:34, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind. I figured it out here at Commons. Wasn't me who uploaded it. Maile66 (talk) 15:13, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

1955 (talk) 10:33, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Russia and former Soviet Union. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:21, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
1955 (talk) 06:38, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1955 (talk) 10:25, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:17, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1955 (talk) 17:36, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

--EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:58, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
1955 (talk) 14:47, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
--EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:07, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
1955 (talk) 12:33, 28 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:00, 28 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1955 (talk) 16:07, 28 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:17, 29 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
1955 (talk) 14:33, 29 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
--EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:48, 29 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1955 (talk) 15:15, 29 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1955 (talk) 13:34, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

--EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:06, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
1955 (talk) 14:55, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
--EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:10, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
1955 (talk) 15:18, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1955 (talk) 04:30, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

--EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:46, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
1955 (talk) 17:15, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
--EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:39, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1955 (talk) 14:39, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

--EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:50, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
1955 (talk) 16:05, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

1955 (talk) 10:17, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

--EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:50, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
1955 (talk) 14:25, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
PD-RU-exempt}}. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:32, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
1955 (talk) 14:07, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Вы пометили на удаление: File:VNV.N124.26.05.1944.1.jpg File:S.K.D.PORTRET.2.jpg File:Kvachanteridze01.jpg File:Smolenski.jpg Чем они провинились. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ff1213 (talk • contribs) 13:16, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Copyright rules by territory. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:47, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
File:Smolenski.jpg; File:Kvachanteridze01.jpg из личного архива. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ff1213 (talk • contribs) 18:49, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
--EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:00, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ff1213 (talk) 17:56, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
--EugeneZelenko (talk) 17:01, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
--EugeneZelenko (talk) 17:40, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thank you for having a closer look on

.

The File was delivered to me out of the collections of Hessisches Staatsarchiv Marburg. It is a historic school certificate, so it doesnt's have a proper author. Any primary copyright or personal right is longtime expired. The file is the basis for a little project] by a students group at Marburg University. I am the teacher in charge. The file was handed to me by the archive together with an explicite persimission to use it for wikicommons/wikisource. I thank you for being so careful concerning copyrights. If there ist anything we ca improce, so please let me know.Jürgen Nemitz (HSP) (talk) 17:59, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It may be public domain because it's state document or because of age. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:20, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I know, that the proper document itself is public domain, but we should take in consideration that the photographer may own a right concerning the reproduction work he has done. I just wanted to be careful. So I mentioned, that the reproduction was done in Hessisches Staatsarchiv Marburg. I have adressed the archive via email before the upload was done and they allowed me to use the document in Commons as long as the shelf mark (Staatsarchiv Marburg Best. 152, Nr.94) is mentioned. So I would ask you kindly to remove the deletion request. Jürgen Nemitz (HSP) (talk) 08:50, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You could just add their mar into description. Scanning doesn't add authorship, so Creative Commons license is incorrect. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 18:18, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In my my humble opinion the picture was not necessarily produced by scanning. It might be a photographer's work as well as this is often done in archives as a method that is more adequate in respect of preserving historic documents. You can't tell. I really don't see the problem to give credit to the demands of the donating institution. They permit us to use it anyhow as long as the institution and the shelf mark are mentioned. The shelf mark is already metioned. If I declare the document als public domain it might be used outside commons without mentioning the origin, which ist not fair I think. Best Jürgen Nemitz (HSP) (talk) 09:06, 26 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have anything against credit to archive. But public domain tag should be used. See also w:en:Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 22:50, 26 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image Deletion Request... Please explain

[edit]

I uploaded my first file to use in a wikipedia edit, and you requested that it be deleted (please see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:MathCAD_Error-Absolute_Values_InI_ntegrands.pdf). I am new to "talk" and "commons", and, as I indicated, this is the first time that I have included an image in an edit of a wikipedia article, and I do not understand your reason for the request, presumably because I do not understand the jargon that you used. Hi EugeneZ, These files: Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_Pbkauf are all indeed CC-SA licensed. The source link used was not good, but all of the original videos on EdX include a link to CC-SA-4.0. I recommended reuploading with the right source link. But three entire courses on EdX have been freely licensed; please be courteous to the authors and editors who are trying to manage the upload and recognize that they will have a learning curve. --SJ+ 19:19, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

licence for images and document on Predrag Keros page

[edit]

Hi. I hope this is the right way to find help. I'm newbie here and just finishing my first article (Predrag Keros). I got notice about problem regarding permissions on some files I uploaded.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Dmajdic#File_tagging_File%3AKeros_-_Nagrada_J.J._Strossmayer.jpg

I'm making an article about really great neurosurgon who died recently. All info and materials are provided by his son and wife. I understand that there might be a problem if an article is writen about him getting a recognition but are his diplomas also really questionable? And a file which points to a citations of his work in global literature? I'm not sure what's problematic there. So, please help me to do whatever is necesary to make things right. TIA Dmajdic (talk) 18:45, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Diplomas are issued by organizations/governments, so copyrights belong to them. However, some may use public domain images or may be excepted by copyright. You need to find out and fix license tags.
It's hard to tell how convincing file with quotation may be. If it's generated somewhere automatically, you could use web link. See Commons:Project scope.

I have corrected on of the photos (Saudi Arabian cuisine photo). I want to correct the other ones as I misunderstood how to upload photos back then (April 2017).

Can you help me find the original photos via Google and attribute them as I just did with one of the photos in order for them to be used again on the Saudi Arabia Wikipedia page and potentially elsewhere?

I think I did it as it should be done now.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Examples_of_various_Saudi_Arabian_dishes.jpg

Thanks in advance.

--OxfordLaw (talk) 15:28, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

All 10 photos have now been corrected by me and the authors have been credited and links to all photos have been provided as well. This was my fault initially as I misunderstood how to upload photos back in April 2018. There should no longer be an issue in this regard.--OxfordLaw (talk) 18:43, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, not every image available on Internet could be uploaded on Commons. See Commons:Licensing. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:47, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea why you are removing photos that are freely available (without a copyright) on PHOTO sharing pages such as Flickr.com taken by ordinary Saudi Arabians who are eager to showcase the beauty of their country and photos taken by Saudi Arabian newspapers (who have the same interests and whose photos are widely used by people without a complain)? They have been credited, their is a link and their photos did not have any copyright. If they had, I would not have been able to download them. If those people did not want their photos to be shared openly, they would not upload them on a photo sharing page such as Flickr.com

When people share photos on Flickr that can be downloaded as they do not have any copyright. Only those that have cannot be downlaoded--OxfordLaw (talk) 15:02, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please read Commons:Licensing carefully before making new uploads. Images which you uploaded from Flicker were clearly marked as All rights reserved (== copyrighted). --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:05, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please show me that because I have an user on Flickr and I could download those photos without a problem. If a photo has a copyright on Flickr, it cannot be downloaded by users on Flickr as I told.

What should I do in order for those photos to be used again? Shall I ask for permission which I am 100% sure that I would get seeing that I am only using the photos on a encyclopedia (Wikipedia) in order to showcase Saudi Arabia and that this is something that every Saudi Arabian (naturally) would support?

If I get their direct permission to use their Flickr photos, how can I convince you of this before you delete them again? Thank you.--OxfordLaw (talk) 15:08, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any image shown in browser could be downloaded.
You could try to find photos which were licensed by author under terms of Creative Commons-Attribution or Creative Commons-Attribution-Share Alike licenses. Again, please read Commons:Licensing. You could also visit https://creativecommons.org.
EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:31, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you and I have read that. From what I can conclude most photos on Wikipedia do not follow such rules completely.

However I have to ask again in order to remove all doubts and have your written word here.

Thank you. --OxfordLaw (talk) 15:40, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please read Commons:Licensing. Quote from there: Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content, that is, images and other media files that are not subject to copyright restrictions which would prevent them being used by anyone, anytime, for any purpose.
You could try to convince authors to release their images under one of accepted licenses, but it'll be easier to search for images already under those licenses.

Is image used for cover in public domain or modern painting? It's not obvious because of quality of scan. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:08, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The image is used for cover in public domain, should I also scanned the part where it is stated so for easier reference? Jamerson fargone (talk) 01:09, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It'll OK if you'll add information about image into description. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:39, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I already added some info into the description, hope this covers all the info required. Jamerson fargone (talk) 00:58, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's still not obvious. Could you please write something like: original cover is based on image by XYZ created in ABC?. Also {{Cc-zero}} is not applicable in that case. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:30, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Is this sentence applicable? "The current cover is based on the image of Guan Yu, created circa 2016". Considering I really don't know who designed the cover and the temple that distributes it states that the book is in public domain, if you desire more info, the best I can do is state the printer of the book. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamerson fargone (talk • contribs) 14:05, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think so, if cover creator just added text. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:01, 29 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, is this info better? -> The current cover is based on the image of Guan Yu, commissioned by Ipoh Menglembu Guan Di Temple circa 2016. - I have yet to get hold of the real printer but will add it in once I confirm it. Jamerson fargone (talk) 01:23, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So this is modern illustration? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:02, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Considering it is a printed photograph with added text, yes, I would say this is modern illustration. So meaning, the license is change to CC0? Does the content of the book cover, created in 1668, affect the licensing of the book cover?Jamerson fargone (talk) 05:37, 3 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Old book could be reprinted with modern cover, so both works should have separate licenses. Adding text to old image doesn't add too much authorship, but it's necessary to be sure that image is old. See also w:en:Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:00, 3 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I will do my best to find out more about the image origin, if not I can always make a totally original work based on the figure myself set it as CC0.Jamerson fargone (talk) 05:34, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eugene, I have created an original artwork based on the historical figure with open source text for the book cover. Could I licensed it as public property here, as the figure and book I am depicting are over 500 years old?--Jamerson fargone (talk) 16:15, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eugene, I have read some of the rules in Wiki and decided to upload an entirely new file. So could we move on by deleting the old image? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamerson fargone (talk • contribs) 17:02, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
