bogus author in picture's comment section (under file history)

Hello. This is in regard to File:Collier's10-25-24.jpg. It's the second picture in the Wikipedia article on: Paul Martin (illustrator). Well, in the picture's file history section, under comment, it wrongly states the author as me, JimPercy. Please correct to: Paul Martin or Illustrated by Paul Martin. His name can even fairly easily be seen in the picture, which is a magazine cover from 1924. Thanks. JimPercy (talk) 00:10, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Convenience link: File:Collier's10-25-24.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 02:29, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Appears to be fixed. The reason it list you as the author is that you listed yourself as the author when you uploaded. You could have edited this as easily as anyone else. - Jmabel ! talk 02:30, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I realize it was my error in the uploading process, in keying in my name instead of the author. The error is still there. I think only an editor/administrator at Wikimedia can correct the error. Namely, changing "JimPercy" to "Illustrated by Paul Martin" or "Paul Martin." Re. two boys playing football picture. Thanks. JimPercy (talk) 15:03, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

The file history is irrelevant. Don't worry about it.--Prosfilaes (talk) 16:10, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Updating a file

Hi! I wanted to update File:U.S. draft lottery.jpg with the much better quality version here, which has no copyright restrictions. I'm still new to a lot of commons stuff, though, and I have no idea to do this without just uploading the image to a new page. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!--Yaksar (talk) 07:37, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

I don't know how to link to the file page and not just show the image, so the redlink doesn't lead anywhere but is the name of the file.--Yaksar (talk) 07:39, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
And I'd like to do the same update with replacing this image with this one.--Yaksar (talk) 07:51, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
And while I'm at it, I guess updating this black and white scan of a patent with the full color original would be cool, if that's allowed.--Yaksar (talk) 08:33, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
To overwrite a file, you can use the link "Upload a new version of this file" on the description page of the file. You can see also Commons:FAQ#How can I upload a new version of a file?. Uploading a file with better resolution is a valid reason for overwriting. (I simplified your internal links, although your workarounds worked fine too.) -- Asclepias (talk) 11:18, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks so much! I can't do this until Flinfo starts working again, since I'm not sure how to get the proper other info out of Flickr files. But in regards to the last one, updating the B&W scan with the original document, is that still ok as an update, since it's not just a resolution improvement?--Yaksar (talk) 19:29, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
Ah, wait, it seems we already have the original File:BoardGamePatentMagie.jpg, right? (It's always a good idea to verify if the image is already on Commons). On the more general question, use your best judgment (you can read this proposition and its associated discussion). If you think of a good reason why users might deliberately want to display the lower resolution file or if it's a different file type or if you doubt for any reason, upload separately. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:05, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
Ah, clearly I should have searched more carefully. I'll try to be more careful with the others, and I may even upload them separately, although I'll still be waiting for Flinfo probably.--Yaksar (talk) 01:10, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Are my images not showing up?

The image at File:The_Wreck_Frederic_Edwin_Church.jpg isn't showing up for me. Is this a glitch? The last few of my uploads ended up looking like just a transparent grid, but if I click on the image, the actual picture will appear. So I know it's there. Not sure what to do. Reupload? – Keraunoscopia (talk) 03:31, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Looks buggy to me. I'll try and reupload. Dcoetzee (talk) 03:55, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
There's a squid error right now:
"Unable to forward this request at this time. This request could not be forwarded to the origin server or to any parent caches. The most likely cause for this error is that: The cache administrator does not allow this cache to make direct connections to origin servers, and All configured parent caches are currently unreachable."
This type of error is usually temporary. Wait and try again later. Dcoetzee (talk) 03:57, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. Something's definitely up. The file doesn't say it's linked to any articles, but the image (in fact, all of them having this trouble) shows up just fine. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 04:03, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Source

Is that right to write in "Source" the camera manufacturer and model? If the file is not available on Internet and it is gaven to me by my friend (with copyright there is all OK).--Edgars2007 (talk) 12:37, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

If you click on the ? symbol beneath the source field in the upload form it will tell you:
"Source: Where did this file originally come from? Give as much information as you can. If you need more than one line, click the button to the right of the field.
Source information is mandatory for all uploads to the Commons. Please do not upload files taken from known bad sources, and be careful with uploads from problematic sources.
If you give a URL as the immediate image source, make sure it's a URL to an image description, or to a web page where the image used. A link to the plain image file is of no use."
To directly answer your question: the camera model can be put in there but it is not of much use there. What should be in there is what you wrote here: "t is gaven to me by my friend". In addition you should write how he got the file. Did you shot the photograph? Then add: "he photographed it" or similar.
Please use the name he wants to be attributed with in the "author" field. Also you need to obey COM:OTRS - we need a written (e-mail) permission / license from your friend.
If you have more questions just answer here. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:23, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

images with opaque backgrounds

I edit from time to time pics on this page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_for_cleanup. But what is meant by the category "images with opaque backgrounds". Does it mean that the background of the images should be transparent? And if so, why? Or is something else meant? Citypeek (talk) 17:57, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Yes, just see the headline of Category:Images with opaque backgrounds and click the link to en.wikipedia for an explanation (if needed).
Why? Since images with transparent background look better if placed on a non-white background. Frequently this occures in Wikipedia's info boxes. See e.g. de:Apple iPhone. Currently we ware creating new replacements with a transparent background: de:Wikipedia:Fotowerkstatt#iPhone_4 Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 18:43, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Great answer, Saibo. Couldn't have been better. Thanks. Citypeek (talk) 18:50, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Uploaded images looking grainy

I have uploaded to this site many photos that I had personally taken. I use a Nikon DSLR and I view the photos in ViewNX. I noticed a recurrent problem, that when I look at my uploaded photos in this site, they look much more grainy than they did in ViewNX. Obviously the file is not altered because when I download the file back to the computer and open it with ViewNX it looks good again. This phenomenon is most serious in big files such as 10 MB.

I wanted to ask if it happens to others too, and what is the reason for this. And most important, how should I judge my photos? According to their good appearance in ViewNX or according to their grainy appearance in Commons?

Thank you in advance. Gidip (talk) 16:43, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

The jpeg compression for resized pictures here is (sadly) currently very high. See the test images at Template_talk:Convert_to_PNG. Maybe/hopefull somebody finds some time and figures out better jpeg params for our scaling servers. When you click on your images to load them in full size the should look as good as in ViewNX - at least when you view in 100%. When you view them scaled to screen width (which browsers automatically do), then they may look grainy, too since most browsers use simple/fast scaling algorithms. ViewNX probably uses a highquality algorithm to scale images. If it does not explain the problem for you then please link an example image here. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 17:27, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Gidip (talk) 18:31, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Filesize limits

Are there filesize limits? How can I find them for .ogv filetypes?--TonyTheTiger (talk) 03:28, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Directly in the upload form: "Maximum file size: 100 MB" - for all file types. Maybe the 100 MB are meant as 100 MiB. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 03:49, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Problems with visualizing an image on Wikipedia

Hi, I uploaded an image for a new contribution that I wrote. The contribution is at the page http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_W%C5%82adys%C5%82aw_Wo%C5%9B (http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Wladyslaw_Wos). I see that the image is not visible any more, and I wonder if anyone could help... Thank you for any help. Paolo Bellini

I'm wondering if there's a glitch somewhere. I've been having the same problems, from not seeing the images load on an article, to seeing an image on the article, but not on the file description page. (But if I click on the blank square, the image will load properly on its own.) Not sure what it is. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 10:12, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Actually, I did something wrong in specifying the template and the author... But I cannot solve the problem...--Paolo Bellini (talk) 12:49, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

The file is at File:Jan Wladyslaw Wos.jpg. Thumbnails have currently some problems. This is way it probably doesn't show correctly at it:Jan Władysław Woś. It should resolve itself somewhen ..
I fixed the source field by adding Own. Is this what you were trying to do? --  Docu  at 13:32, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Screenshots of freeware and shareware software - Uploading confusion

Hi! Please if anyone could help me here to clear up some questions. I'm a content writer of a company. So I represent the company legally. I need to create 2 articles about 1 freeware software and 1 article about 1 shareware software (all software from the same company I represent). Everytime I try different options to upload the screenshots of this 2 software the screenshots files are deleted as copyright violation. How can I successfully upload these files with which license types and which other details mentioned? Please if you could explain it all for an usual user not an expert user as there are a lot of confusion. Thank You! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ashleyjonesme (talk • contribs) 09:11, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Here on Commons you represent yourself, not some company, and you edit in your own name. Therefore selecting the "its entirely my own work" in the Commons:Upload was the first mistake. Its not your work, "its from somewhere else". Another option is "It is a free software screenshot", but only if the software is published under a free content license, free-/shareware is unfree in most cases. Once you selected the "Its from somewhere else" option in the upload form you have to provide all information, hints:
  • The source: The publisher, name of the publication (software), method (e.g. screenshot?, photograph of a box cover), third party copyrights if any (photographer who made the box cover photo)
  • Author: Software creator or publisher, box cover designer or publisher, photographer of box cover
  • Permission: This file has been published already, copy the into the permission field.
Then forward the copyright holders written permission to COM:OTRS. --Martin H. (talk) 11:26, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Thank You for such clear answers to my questions Martin H.!
One more question is what about field Licensing: in my above case? What should I choose there for the screenshots?
P.S. Do the same rules as above apply to uploading a company Logo?
Please help!!
The same applies for uploading a company logo, provided that the company logo is not Commons:Licensing#Simple design, in that case the upload option "From somewhere else" offers the licensing option "Logo with only simple text" in the drop-down menu at the bottom of the upload form. If the logo is not too simple the same as for the screenshots applies: The copyright holder must agree to a free license. You have to select the license choosen by the copyright holder and back this licensing up by a written permission or by an reliable external publication confirming the licensing for the whole software or for that specific screenshots. --Martin H. (talk) 22:39, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I understand now about logos too. But what about field Licensing: for my screenshots? Which option under the field Licensing: should I choose for my screenshots? I tried to choose different options filling out all the required information in other fields but the file is always deleted not giving me the chances to send the email with written permissions. Can you please help me with this question ? Ashleyjonesme (talk

Image cropping help

Okay, so I'm an image manipulation moron. Can someone please crop File:Button contest speedy.jpg so it's just the image and none of the surrounding space? I tried by hand but I keep cutting off the edges and I have no idea how to do the curved end portions. I'd be much obliged.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:55, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Did you want a transparent background? Because then it'd have to be saved as a GIF or other format that allows for transparent backgrounds. Otherwise, the JPG image will always be squared. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 13:16, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Sure, sounds good. Thanks!--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:19, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Okay, gimme a few minutes. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 13:20, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
See if this is ok: File:Button_contest_speedy_2.gif (there was already a file by that name, so I added the "_2"). I left a one pixel shadow at the bottom; if you don't like that, it can be removed. If the edges are too sharp, I can keep from erasing it so closely next time. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 13:43, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
I think this version may look nicer: File:Button_contest_speedy_fuller.gif. I couldn't get derivative FX to work, hence the slow response time. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 13:53, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks much. I don't know your familiarity with speedy deletion at Wikipedia but I know I've seen you around there. I'm working on a proposal to get rid of the entire hangon process by placing this button in the speedy deletion templates themselves, which when clicked on takes a user to a pre-formatted talk page setup where they can place their protest rationale. See where I have your latest version working. Thanks again.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 14:17, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
No problem; I'm going to reupload the latest version as a PNG, and tweak the edges just a little more so their less jagged still. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 21:51, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Here is the PNG version. All pixels are intact, so this image is an exact duplicate of the JPG, only with "fading" transparency. I didn't have a clear head earlier. File:Speedy delete contest button.png I'll post on your talk page as well. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 22:09, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Note that you should almost always prefer PNG to GIF - if only because of GIF's 256 colour limitation. Both support transparency. The only thing worse than a button with JPEG artifacts is a palette-reduced button with JPEG artifacts. Dcoetzee (talk) 21:09, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Dcoetzee, thanks for pointing this out. I will take your advice immediately and will store this guideline for the future. For some reason, at the time, PNG didn't even cross my mind. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 21:51, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Request to delete a file

I here, I was wondering if someone could delete one of my files: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:London_Winter.jpg. My thanks in advance. Haljackey (talk) 18:26, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

It's in use at w:fa:لندن_(انتاریو). We don't normally delete images in use. You could use the nominate for deletion under toolbox on the left hand menu, but you would have to give a good reason for deletion, and your request would not be sufficient.--Prosfilaes (talk) 21:30, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Ok I made it so that no articles link to the file. It can be deleted now. Haljackey (talk) 04:55, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
It doesn't work like that. The fact that it was in use is indicative that it has educational value, and so we have an interest in keeping it. Why do you want it deleted? You do realize that the free license under which you provided the image is not revocable, right? Powers (talk) 15:08, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Public Domain Mark 1.0 and constant licensing problems

generally, i find the licensing too complicated, a big stumble stone for not only newbees. i'm quite familiar with copyright, but uploading files to the wiki commons constantly causes problems. maybe someone can make things easier. there are so many licensing help pages here, templates, ways and procedures to upload, to tag and categorize, it's really difficult.

my current licensing problem concerns this image: File:Auschwitz Zopf.jpg. the photo stems from a documentary movie at archive.org and carries the license tag Creative Commons license: Public Domain Mark 1.0. i searched a while in the templates here at wiki commons and couldn't find one. so, what am i supposed to do in order to protect this file from deletion?

actually i would like to feed the whole film into the wiki commons, but the learning curve is frustratingly steep.

thanks,

Maximilian Schönherr (talk) 10:48, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Of course the original copyright holder did not publish the file under some license called "Creative Commons Public Domain Mark". That is only an assessment on copyright status made by someone working for a project on archive.org, this simple assessment however fails to explain, why this file is free of copyright. You have to figure out why this content is public domain, what reason applies. See Commons:Licensing for specific reasons for both the country of origin and the U.S. I dont know something about this film, about its creation background and I not watched the film right now. But a tip: Any content created by an U.S. Federal Government employee will be public domain and ok to upload under Commons:Copyright_tags#US_Government_agencies, any included third party footage - if any, i not watched the film - included from third parties, e.g. German military/propaganda/documentary footage will not be public domain, if you prepare an upload of the film you will need to remove frames containing third party footage (if any). Simple assessments like that on archive.org with just linking http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/mark/1.0/ isnt applicable on Commons, nothing is public domain without a reason, its required to outline the particular reason in the file description. For that purpose we use the copyright tags. --Martin H. (talk) 11:23, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
I just watched the very first part of the film:
Either if first published in Ukraine: A work of Ukraine with known authors, if those authors ("M. Oschurkow, A. Woronzow, N. Bykow, K. Kutub-Sade, A. Pawlow") died before 1951 the film is PD, if not the film is not PD untill 70 years of the death of the last surviving author and not ok to upload.
Or if first publisehd in Germany - its in German language and was presumably first published in Germany, therefore the country of origin(country of first publication) possibly is Germany: the copyright term is 70 years following the death of the last surviving author.
Its possibly public domain in the United States, thats the relevant copyright status for archive.org, but not Wikimedia Commons. --Martin H. (talk) 11:34, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

--Martin H. (talk) 21:21, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Want file moved

I had uploaded the following files, making a set of DOE/NNSA images:

Other users uploaded the images File:Fukushima Radiation Levels NNSA.png and File:JTzbm.png. I have no use for the later, but the former had uploaded different images as revisions, so I reverted to an image that is not already a part of the set. I would like to have that file renamed as File:DOE NNSA Fukushima Survey March 17-19.PNG. The Fukushima Radiation levels is still used on the French Wikinews and I've put a notice asking for the image to be changed.

Again, I would like renaming:

Just use template Rename, someone will get to it. - Jmabel ! talk 20:23, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Next I'm going to try to find the template for deletion of a duplicate. Think I can manage that on my own. Theanphibian (talk) 03:25, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
You can use the template Duplicate for that. --Sreejith K (talk) 03:30, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

category / speedy

how, please, can I add "category" if it does´nt show up on the file? and how can I remove a file duplicate if I don´t find "speedy" anywhere?

(somehow it seems to me, that you make it rather difficult to add a contribution) - (unsigned)

  • I'm not sure I understand your first question. Are you asking how to place an image in a category, or how to create a new category?
    • In the first case you just place the category name in double brackets at the bottom of the text describing the file (e.g. will place the image in Category:Buildings in Louisiana). If you select "Edit" for any image that is in a category you can see how this is done (please cancel when you are done looking). Technically, it doesn't have to be at the bottom, but that is the preferred location.
    • In the latter case, you have to create a page for the category; you can typically get to the relevant page by following up a "red" category link. Then you place the category in existing categories using the same technique you use to place a file in a category. E.g. look at Category:Buildings in New Orleans and if you go in to edit the page (again, please cancel when you are done) you can see how it was included in Category:Buildings in Louisiana. - Jmabel ! talk 20:33, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
  • As for your second question, I'm not sure what you mean about not "finding 'speedy'", but if the image is indeed a duplicate, tag it with Duplicate. If there one of the two images is actually higher-resolution, tag the lower-resolution image, no point to losing the better one. - Jmabel ! talk 20:33, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Certificate conflict

Today I tried to upload a .JPG file to my Picasa webalbums for sharing with Wikimedia. I have done this a couple of times in the past few weeks without having any problems.
This time it did not work and upload was blocked , because of a problem with a supposed safety certificate of the website.

The message (Dutch) was as follows:

Er is een probleem met het beveiligingscertificaat van deze website.

Het beveiligingscertificaat dat door deze website wordt gebruikt, is verleend aan een adres voor een andere website. = The safety certificate used by this website has been given to an address for another website Problemen met beveiligingscertificaten kunnen duiden op een poging om u informatie te ontfutselen of om informatie die u naar de server verzendt, te onderscheppen.

Images help

Hello,

I tried to upload an image, that I created myself, onto the page titles- Moments (physics). This page is currently not the most recent page, since someone decided to revert it, however I did notice that someone said my image had no license. So I went onto the Creative Commons, and filled out the forum. In the process of trying to get a license on the first image- moments.jpg, I inadvertently created moment.jpg and momentimages.jpg. I only want one, and they are duplicates, however I made them all. How can I fix this problem, so my image does not get deleted. I only need one of them.

Need an administer to clean up file-uploading mess

Hello, On April 5th I downloaded the picture of two boys playing football for the Wikipedia article: Paul Martin (illustrator). The problem is that there are five other nearly-identical pictures of the two boys playing football, downloaded by me on this same day. I'd like to request that those five be deleted from the "file history" section. Here's what happened: I downloaded an improved picture on 4-5-2011. The picture looked okay, but when it was downsized into the article the contrast was not that good. This was due to the boy's blonde hair, not showing up well. So, I tried darkening, lightening and back to darkening the picture, in order to improve the contrast. I also tried to correct the odd coloring along the right edge. Therefore, please keep the current version of 4-5 at 17:28. But, delete the earlier five versions from the same day. These are the ones to delete from the system:

Thanks for cleaning up this mess. I'm not too good at this picture editing part and just picking up on it. JimPercy (talk) 22:07, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Don't worry about it. If we "delete" these, they still don't actually physically go away, so no server space is saved. Normally no one looks at the history; it's just there for technical reasons. Absolutely no harm in having these be visible if someone goes looking for the file history, and it's not worth the work to clean it. You'd find similar on literally thousands of pages.- Jmabel ! talk 00:32, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Okay. I figured some viewers would click onto the article's picture to see a larger size. I've just never myself seen more than about 3-pictures in the history section. I thought the process to remove nearly identical pictures that serve no purpose, would be easier. JimPercy (talk) 16:06, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

I am a representative for a company looking to upload a product logo. The logo is available in many public outlets, but I want to be careful not to relinquish any copyrights with my upload. Please let me know which license option to choose when uploading.

You cannot upload your logo here if you are concerned about it being reused by others - all images on Wikimedia Commons can be reused or modified by anyone for commercial or noncommercial purposes without prior permission. You can upload a reduced-resolution version to the English-language Wikipedia, under the restrictions of en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. Note that many companies have released their logos under a free license, since use of the logo is still protected by trademark law, but this should be a careful decision on your part. posting a scan of an adevtisment from a 40 year old magazine to resolve accuracy of wikipedia articles

Hi, I want to upload a scan of a december 1972 advertisment in a motor cycle magazine for triumph motorcycles, this advertisment is very important in establishing the origins of certain triumphs from that era and which are currently under dispute on wikipedia. How should I approach this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TriumphTR7RV (talk • contribs) 23:13, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

You shouldn't; a 1972 advertisement is still under copyright. You can, at your own discretion, upload it to a image site like Flikr, noting that you're using it under fair use, and then point to that site from the article.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:31, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

"You must give the original source of the file, the author of the work, and a license." I just did all that.

I'm trying to upload an image. I filled in the whole form, yet I get this pink box saying "You must give the original source of the file, the author of the work, and a license." Why doesn't it work? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nilats (talk • contribs) 10:15, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Have you written the source information in the source field and selected a license (if the file is entirely your own work) respectively the license (the free license given at the source, if the source is free) in the licensing drop down at the bottom of the upload form? --Martin H. (talk) 11:44, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Please merge these two files into one

Please fix one of my error, combining these two files into one, or deleting this - IMG Pajero.jpg, and in its place to keep this - IMG 0543.JPG, but to change the file name like - Mitsubishi Pajero in off-roading . jpg. Thanks ...--Biser Todorov (talk) 04:30, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Vote.svg

File:Vote.svg has just been deleted. There are an awful lot of links to that file. Before the delinker bot tries to remove them all, can someone here install, say, File:A coloured voting box.svg, as an instant replacement to be going on with? What is the right way to do that - as a fresh upload, or do redirects work? -- John of Reading (talk) 15:33, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

JFI: Discussed on en:Wikipedia:Ani#Vote.svg. Another discussion is/was at Commons_talk:Licensing#File:Voting_box_clipart.gif.
Redirs work. If have set up one as proposed by you. We have thousands of usages of this file .... Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 19:57, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
Just as a friendly request from a sister project :) can someone versed in policies and discussions here propose a tweak to the deletion process whereby such image deletions are notified to the relevant project in cases were a very large number of uses exist, or create a sensible redirect (as in this case). --ErrantX (talk) 21:03, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
I guess (but not sure) the redirect should not be a permanent solution since it is pointing to a different file. Maybe we can use the delinker bot to replace the vote.svg by File:A coloured voting box.svg if this is fine everywhere. And if there are no more (or few) links delete the technically wrong redir.
Regarding the notification please see (and comment) at Commons:Village_pump#Notifications_to_projects_using_at-risk_images - maybe it helps. We once had a Bot who notified (m:User:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker), but it is not working since years (do not know the reason). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:23, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

Uploaded image has lower quality than original

I can't get this picture uploaded with sufficient quality. I downloaded it from Flickr and then uploaded it to Commons. I used the version with the highest quality available at Flickr (21Kb). The funny thing is that the uploaded picture on Commons has visibly lower quality than the original on my computer and the original as seen on Flickr. Equally puzzling: if you download the Commons picture, its file size is only 13Kb... This lower file size might well be the reason for the visibly lower quality. I reuploaded the 21Kb-picture once more, but that had no effect. What do I do wrong? Can anyone else perhaps download this picture from Flickr and upload it, so as to get the same quality as on Flickr? I am out of my depth here. Kind regards, Encyo (talk) 18:31, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

You have not uploaded the highest quality to Commons. I've done it now. You need to right click the image in flickr and then select the highest quality offered (here: medium).
I cannot find the size you have uploaded. Probably you are using an Internet access provider which aggressivly recompresses the images you view. Maybe you are using mobile Internet access?
If yes, use http://toolserver.org/~bryan/flickr/upload or (if you have an TUSC account better this one:) http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/flickr2commons.php to upload photos from flickr. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 19:38, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I am using mobile internet access. I downloaded the image you uploaded to Commons and it downloaded with file size 21Kb instead of 223Kb, just like the download from Flickr previously. Indeed, very aggressively compressed!
Thanks very much for the tool, I tried it on another picture and it worked fine!
That leaves four other pictures I recently uploaded with low quality. I could reupload them with another name but then I'd have to request a moderator to delete the old files. Therefore, would you be so kind as to reupload these (1, 2, 3, 4) in the highest quality offered by Flickr? Kind regards, Encyo (talk) 20:52, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
Done all. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:07, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

Replacing a file

How do I replace a file I uploaded that has a spelling error with a corrected one? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hrftx (talk • contribs) 2011-04-08T22:01:45 (UTC)

Hi! Please see and follow the help on COM:RENAME. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:13, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

I don't want to rename it, I just want to replace it with a corrected file. (The spelling error is on the image itself, see photo of Garfield assassination gun at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Bulldog_revolver - Institute should be Institution, and I've corrected my file copy)

Oh, sorry. Go to File:GarfieldBD.jpg and scroll down: there should be a link "upload a new file version". Click on it, shortly describe in the textbox the changes you've made and upload the corrected version. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:56, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

Is a form letter from a business sent to dozens of people copyright?

Can I upload an image of a form letter of the type sent to me (and others) but not written by me?

For example a copy of a letter such as follows:

Please accept our apologies for this.

We have taken steps to prevent this in the future.

Is ID to species level a requirement for all QI with no exception? Thanks. Gidip (talk) 13:57, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Second review for QIC

Is there no formal process by which previously reviewed QIC get a second review? Many photos are reviewed by only one person, and after 48 hours become accepted or rejected. I believe such a quick process should be backed up by an option for a second evaluation, this time with several people's opinions. What do others think? Gidip (talk) 14:05, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

What's the opposite of "move to Commons"?

File:CopingMechanismsVinyl.jpg is most likely a copyrighted album cover and probably shouldn't be on Commons. I tried searching for templates for moving this to en.wiki, but I can't find anything. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 07:16, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

I am not aware of such - just do an upload by yourself pointing to the "source" file at commons and copy the description page ... And, of cource, add the necessary fair use templates.
There is no license / source which needs to be documented very good (i.e. upload log or similar) in this case. However, you can use commonshelper2 with the "Move file from commons to project" option. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:30, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Transferred this album cover. Please visit en:File:CopingMechanismsVinyl - from Commons.jpg, add a suitable license tag, fair use rationale, and remove the "Fair use candidate from Commons" tag when you're done. Dcoetzee (talk) 01:07, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Moving Pictures from Commons to Wikipedia

I asked the following question at the English Wikipedia Helpdesk and they suggested i ask here instead: So, i have recently uploaded about eleven pictures to wikicommons to use in the article Wikipedia:Arts on the Line. I just realized that even though I either took or found with the correct licensing on Flickr each of the immages, the pictures are of public artworks or murals and therefor need a fair use rationale. What would be the best way of moving all these pictures and adding a rationale? do I have to manually re-upload all of the pictures to Wikipedia and manually put up each of the ones on Commons for deletion? any help would be great.--Found5dollar (talk) 16:55, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

To my knowledge, yes. A "fair use bot" to transfer files away from Commons is planned/in construction. See also above section: #What.27s_the_opposite_of_.22move_to_Commons.22.3F.
If you uploaded photos of artwork which is neither public domain due to age nor allowed to depict due to FOP then they need to "leave Commons". Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:28, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Hello,

I included a relevant and scholarly PDF file which should be of value to medical students on the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotator_cuff_tear, in the prognosis section. It was quickly removed. Here is the PDF link http://www.theshouldercenter.com/pdf/11078922250-year-cuff-study.pdf

Can you assist me in understanding why it was removed? Thanks, craig@membersonlyusa.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by Boofoot (talk • contribs) 2011-04-08T17:08:47 (UTC)

Hi Craig, you have never uploaded a pdf file under this account. However, if you would upload it it will be deleted since it is copyrighted. Please see COM:L for our rules on which media may be uploaded here.
Digging a bit in your edits I have seen what you mean: this. You did not upload a file rather you just linked it. Please see the history of the article for details and who removed it. Probaly it was placed wrong or was perceived as spam link. Do you have any relation to the website you are trying to link in all of your edits? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 18:27, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply Saibo. I am new to this. As a new webmaster for TheShoulderCenter.com I was asked by Dr. Agrawal if there was any way to promote his more scholarly work, and Wiki seemed to be the logical answer. As the research papers cite other sources (as all research does) do the cited source links in the research paper violate Wiki policy? Or were the links I placed to the PDF on the Wiki page put in the wrong area? I looked at the removal by NellyBli and did not understand the reason given. As this is valuable information (more for medical students than consumers due to the technical nature of the documents)there is no doubt this work should be accessible. Any advice would be appreciated. Craig

Wikipedia - note: you write on Wikimedia Commons here which is a different project - is never the answer for advertising or self-promotion. See en:Wikipedia:Spam on this topic, the aim of your edit is described in the first sentence of that page. --Martin H. (talk) 21:30, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Derivative works (NSFW)

Are derivative works, such as this one (NSFW), allowed here on Commons? Dismas (talk) 13:29, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Oh yeah, if you need to see an original, just follow this Google image search link. Dismas (talk) 13:31, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
What do you mean derivative work? I didn't see any pictures matching the pose in that painting. It is permitted to upload your own paintings of people that aren't copies of copyrighted works.--Prosfilaes (talk) 16:01, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

I have previously been able to print out gallery pages so that the images are displayed as I see them on the screen: 6 across and not taking up many pages double sided. Now for some reason when I attempt to do this in IE or Google Chrome it is only showing the images one after another on the left hand side of the page, which wastes a lot of paper, even in printable view. Changing the % of the view only affects the size of the thumbnails displayed and is not fixing this. Is there something I need to change in the configuration, or what's causing this? Thanks. How to add licence?

Again, I find it exceedingly difficult to add a licence to an image file I am attempting to upload. Please give me a pointer to STEP by STEP instructions and code that will allow me to add licence and expired copyright tags to files that I upload. On the Swedish language site I find no help.

Gregors (talk) 08:17, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

  • Could you clarify: are you trying to include a license at time of upload or add a license to a file that has already been uploaded? Adding wikicommons images to articles on the Swedish wikipedia

Is it not possible to use (en) wikicommons images on the Swedish wikipedia?

Gregors (talk) 08:19, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

There is no such thing as (en) wikicommons. There is the English-language Wikipedia and there is the Wikimedia Commons. You cannot use images from the English-language Wikipedia on the Swedish-language Wikipedia. To use images from the Wikimedia Commons (this site) on the Swedish-language Wikipedia, use exactly the same syntax you would use if the images were directly on the Swedish-language Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 15:40, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

"Missing permission information"

I have been warned that a file I just uploaded (File:Jason Eisner.jpg) is missing permission information and may be deleted. The problem is, it isn't missing permission information. It is clearly stated in the EXIF information for the file that it is licensed under CC-BY-3.0, who the photographer is (me) and where the picture was taken. This is exactly the same thing that I have done for previous images (File:Laszlo Barna.jpg, File:ROHAN FERNANDO.jpg.

Surely I don't need to email OTRS for every file that I upload, where I am unambiguously the author and copyright owner? Please help.

Thparkth (talk) 13:55, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

No, of course not. Please start by asking User:Denniss why he tagged your image, and what sort of permission he feels is necessary. Powers (talk) 20:06, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
I think that Thparkth just needs to identify himself on his user page here as he has done on his en:User-page, so that it is obvious that the uploader is the photographer. A link back to the en:User-page should also satisfy all doubts. --Tony Wills (talk) 10:16, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Uploading content

I am having a discussion/debate with one of your editors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bbb23) regarding the admissibility of facts and potential slander by wikipedia regarding Vito Roberto Palazzolo at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Vito_Roberto_Palazzolo#Continued_slander_of_Palazzolo_by_Don_Calo_et_al

I need to be able to upload newspaper articles and images for the editor to view. How can I do this? I have word docs and pdf's in my computer which are transcripts of court judgements, etc. Likewise, for newspaper articles, for example, do I merely add the link?

Thanks and kind regards

Alexander Fircks

Fircks (talk) 11:12, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi Alexander,
  1. Commons is not the right place to upload documents (PDFs .DOCs etc), nor usually even scanned images of printed pages. Even if it were, I expect that you wouldn't have the copyright owners permission.
  2. So it is not a Commons issue, best ask somewhere on en:wikipedia.
  3. My 2 cents worth: Perhaps provide the editors with full citation details of where/when etc your documents were published, so that they can be independently verified, and upload them temporarily elsewhere (lots of free upload spaces on the internet) and provide the editors with a link, or of course just email them a copy. --Tony Wills (talk) 11:36, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
Agree with Tony Wills third point: You not need to upload (non-free) newspaper articles or something to Wikimedia Commons to cite it. en:Wikipedia:Citing sources. If you want the user to read the texts that you cite or quote you can use an image hosting service that allows you to later remove the non-free content again, e.g. imageshack.us or flickr. --Martin H. Problem with SVG file - shows up fine in full screen view but not within web page; thumbnail doesn't work either

Can someone look at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Timeline_of_web_browsers.svg, please? Look at the history. This version was still fine. The following two versions are fine when viewed as a separate image in the browser, but the bottom half is missing when they are shown within a web site (e.g. on Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Commons description site). The bottom half of the picture is also missing in the thumbnails (as you can see in the history). I tried with both Chrome and IE8 with the same result. I did not do the updates, so not sure what has changed exactly, but clearly something strange is going on. I didn't realise what was going on immediately, so sorry for the triple-revert! --SmilingBoy (talk) 23:27, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

One more comment: I think it is really the PNG rendering that is going wrong. Also the current version has some errors. For example, in the blue shaded area, the SVG says "Based on Trident layout engine"; in the PNG version, only "Based on" is visible. --SmilingBoy (talk) 23:53, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
Probably some error in the svg file or a special svg feature which the svg renderer of Commons does not understand. The "full screen" view is rendered by your browser - therefore the difference. If no one here knows: Best ask at Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop for help. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:37, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
Server admin logs suggest that April 7 was also the date when thumbnail supply was being worked on. If don't know if this may have caused similar issues into the next week. -Mardus (talk) 14:48, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

vielen dank mfg hugo kehr

Notices from Users

At "USS Hanson (DD-832)" I have uploaded images and am getting messages that I do not have the proper copyright information, such as, for example, File:Rmhanson.jpg. I do have the URL of the web page listed where I got it and give credit to the site as the author. What am I doing wrong? I keep reading the rules, but seem to be missing something. Please help me out on this. Thanks. - Vietnambuff

Convenience link File:Rmhanson.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 15:35, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
Take a look at the work that someone did downstream of you on the linked photo and you'll probably get a clear idea what is needed. - Jmabel ! talk 15:36, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

I did not see your edit because I apparently was editing at the same time and may have overwritten your edit, but I think I have it corrected. However, I have the same problem with File:50-cal-gun.jpg and File:Hitonhanson.jpg too. Both images were taken by US Navy sailors in 1972, but the latter is a screenshop from a Youtube video. What do I need to do here? Thanks - Vietnambuff

Convenience links again: File:50-cal-gun.jpg and File:Hitonhanson.jpg. Please use this syntax on pages like this so people can easily get to the photo in question. - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
Among other things, if you have a large number of images related to one ship, you should create a category for that ship, attach the supercategories to just that one category, and place the images in the category for the ship rather than repeat the supercategories over and over. - Jmabel ! talk 23:18, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Images on Florida State websites

I'm having trouble understanding what laws pertain to images on Florida government sites. To cut straight to the chase, may I upload this image from this website owned by Florida State Parks (which has no copyright notice) using this license? If not, may I upload it using another license? If I may not upload it at all, why not? Thank you in advance for any help! Noted Seven (talk) 18:31, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Please mention next time that you did already upload: File:Trapper Nelson with alligator.jpg
This is a very specific question - please ask at Commons talk:Licensing. But I do not think you can. Even if the park is a FL gov organization for which the template applies the photo does seem very old and is probably "borrowed" from somehwere.. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 23:15, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Cropping Commons images as new images

Hi, I've previously uploaded a public domain image from Flickr onto Commons (here's the URL: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Columbia_University_1910.jpg) and I was wondering if I could crop that image, but keep the original. Here's what I mean: I noticed in the bottom-right corner of the image, you can see the old 116th St. subway station, which I would like to use in a separate article about that subway station. But I would also like to keep this larger image of the Columbia campus. How should I go about doing this? Delaywaves (talk) 22:05, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Just upload the cropped version under a new file name, and use a compatible license (preferably the same license). I recommend adding Extracted to the page of the original image and Extracted from to the page of the new image. - Jmabel ! talk 00:56, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
But should I click on the "Upload Work From Flickr" category? If not, then what should I give as the source and author? Delaywaves (talk) 20:56, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
Source: the linked filename of the image you cropped. Author: copy it from the original image. You can even copy the whole page (in edit mode) from the original image and paste it in the basic upload form and then change the source.
Or: you use the option "It is a derivative work of one or several files from Commons" in the upload from. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 23:21, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
Great, I think I got it. Thanks a lot. Delaywaves (talk) 16:11, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Illustrations of flags

Hello. In the case of flags that are in the public domain, are (accurate) illustrations (found on the internet) of them automatically in the public domain as well? Swarm (talk) 20:31, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

If the depiction/drawing itself does not create a new copyright then probably yes - in the PD. It maybe can get a bit critial with very complicated flags. But e.g. simple striped flags are really no problem. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 23:26, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Editing Flickr Images

Hi, if I'm uploading someone else's work from Flickr, which was uploaded under "No known copyright restrictions," can I edit the photo at all? It would involve cropping out a black border around the photo and removing a few blemishes on the image. Thanks. Delaywaves (talk) 20:28, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Please mention the link to an example on flickr - would help. I think it means the uploader is not the creator of the work and consequently has not put it under a free license. But he thinks it is not in copyright or out of copyright. However, it is your/our job to prove this on your own. See COM:L for the guidelines and Commons:Copyright_tags for a selection of available tags to be put on the file's page.
If it is true that there is no copyright restriction you can do what you like what you want with the image. If a license would not allow editing as you describe it it wouldn't be sufficiently free to be on Commons. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 22:55, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
Alright, thanks a lot. Here's the link to an original image with the license I mentioned above on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/george_eastman_house/2870348575/) ...and here's the same one once I retouched it a little (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vic_Willis_Catcher%27s_Mask.jpg), but I think you did answer my questions, and I mentioned in the image description that it had been retouched. Delaywaves (talk) 01:32, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
by the way: I just notice you are the same as above: #Cropping_Commons_images_as_new_images - I answered there, too.
That was fine like you did. I have added some info and uploaded the original version so we have it available if it vanishes from flickr. Maybe you could explain in two or three more words what you retouched in the respective template I have added. :-) Also there were the author and the date of death given so I was able to also add a copyright template for non-US countries. Creative Commons photos with no attribution

The creative commons license says, attribution – You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work). However, I don't see anything about attribution in several Creative Commons photos, such as this one http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anatomy_dog.png

Do I then treat them as public domain photos, with no attribution? - Unsigned

That attributes the original author as "Caronna at de.wikipedia". Normally, unless something says otherwise, one would attribute to the original author. - Jmabel ! talk 15:51, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
When it is clear that the uploader is the sole author of the image, and unless he specifically asked to be credited in another manner or to not be credited at all, then it can generally be assumed that he wants to be credited in the manner that he mentioned in the "author" field or, if he did not mention something in that field, under his user name.
When the file has been uploaded by someone who is not clearly the author, or when the image is a derivative of another image from someone else, things can get more complex, because you must credit each author who contributed some creative content at some point in the creative chain that led to that image, and often you must verify that the relevant information was not lost or corrupted somewhere in the transfer or derivation. You may then face unexpected problems.
The image you linked above is an example of that. That image is a derivative work, the derivative being credited to the author "Caronna". However, it is derived from an original photo, which was credited as a "gift from Dr. Manfred Herrmann, Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler-Klub (ADRK), http://www.ADRK.de". Which is an ambiguous statement. It can be noted that the website in question has a strict copyright notice. Because the OTRS system was not really in place at the time of the first upload, and because we do not have a direct confirmation from the author, it is unclear if this original author/source actually agreed to place the photo under the free license which was added by the uploader, or if the license was an unauthorized initiative from the uploader (who does not seem to be the author of the original photo, although he seems to be the author of the derivative image made from it).
Here, you face two decisions. First, you must decide if you trust the validity of the license added to the original photo. If you trust it, then you must decide (or guess from the available information and using your best judgment) how the original author wanted to be credited. You might possibly end up with a credit looking somewhat like this: "Original photo from Dr. Manfred Herrmann, Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler-Klub (ADRK). Derivative image by Caronna". (Personally, I would hesitate to use this image without obtaining a confirmation directly from the original author to the effect that he really intended to place the photo under the free license. But I'm not you.)

Options to display images

I uploaded some images , one gives me the link of:

File:FolderStructure 07ShotsDepartmentsDetailed.jpg|FolderStructure 07ShotsDepartmentsDetailed

I am trying to use this code in my wiki page but it doesnt display any images.

If I paste in the same command (of cours in square brackets) than it displays the image here in the Help desk.

To me it seems that Commons and the actual WikiMedia page doesnt communicate with eachother. What am I doing wrong?

This is our wikimedia page:

http://www.spatialharmonicsgroup.com/insight/index.php?title=Folder_Structure

Is there another way to display images on our wikimedia page, I can host my images on our servers, how can I create a link to those to display them on our site?

Thx

Attila — Preceding unsigned comment added by Attilaz (talk • contribs) 2011-04-18T20:28:11 (UTC)

Hi Attila, by the way: usually you would use to display it smaller than in original.
I cannot see any page or test on any page as it needs an registration everywhere. AFAIK wikis need to support instantCommons to be able to use Commons' media. Maybe you can upload images locally in your wiki (maybe here: http://www.spatialharmonicsgroup.com/insight/index.php?title=Special:Upload ) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 23:58, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

uploading images

Hi,

I would like to upload an image from my collection to a subject that appears on line. I have gone over the instruction but still, I do not understand how this can be done. I normally upload photos with the upload button appearing on sites but here there is a long file name with symbols, so confusing and not clear.

What can I do? reading the instructions over and over and still I have no idea how this is done. Sorry if it seems that I am not that bright.

Hope you can help, Neil — Preceding unsigned comment added by Huddyhuddy (talk • contribs) 2011-04-19T11:32:05 (UTC)

Hi Neil, did you shot the photo? It probably is a bit confusing for you since we do only accept images which can be used by anybody for any purpose (see COM:L). You can try the new (but still not finished; contains some bugs) upload wizard if you do not like our upload form. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:22, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
And, in general, you can only upload from your own computer, not from collections online elsewhere. There are a few tools for uploading from certain sites such as Flickr, but since you don't say where your 'collection' is I have no specific suggestions. (Although maybe you are talking about uploading from your own computer; this was all a bit vague.) - Jmabel ! talk 01:32, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

License Question

Hi, I know I've been asking quite a few questions here, this should be the last for now! Some photos from the Library of Congress (LOC.gov) are in a collection called The George Grantham Bain Collection, and some photos on Commons, like this one, say that the Library says there are "no known restrictions" on the use of the photos from that collection. (The Library website says this too.) Does that mean I can upload any photo from that collection even if it was published/created after January 1, 1923? Thanks. Delaywaves (talk) 00:17, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Many (in fact most) published works first published between 1923 and 1977 are in fact in the public domain, although some are not (to be in copyright today, they would have had to been registered, renewed, and included a copyright notice). You can use the PD-Bain tag for works from this collection, since we presume LOC has done their research here. Dcoetzee (talk) 00:49, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
Yes, use PD-Bain as the license tag. Carl Lindberg (talk) 00:50, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, that's what I did, but Dcoetzee, you said many images from later than 1923 probably aren't copyrighted unless there is a copyright notice. Is there some kind of template I could put to signal that? I've seen the Federal Government template and the pre-1923 template, but not a "copyright expired/not renewed" template. Delaywaves (talk) 01:39, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
Copyright tags PD-US-no notice and PD-US-not renewed cover exactly these cases. SV1XV (talk) 04:32, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
And this would mean that ANY photo I find from pre-1923, I could upload as long as I say where I got it from? Delaywaves (talk) 11:36, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
If it was first published before 1923 in the United States, yes. If it was taken before 1923 but never published, the rules are a bit different. And if it was first published in another country, then we also have to look at that country's copyright law (1923 is purely a U.S. thing). Carl Lindberg (talk) 15:19, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

SVG drop shadows

I notice that the PNG renderer may sometimes put drop shadows (made in Inkscape) in the wrong place, or not show them at all, depending on things like the size the PNG is rendered at or the amount of blur on the shadow. (They appear in the SVG as a filter tag, containing a gaussian blur, an offset, a color matrix, and a merge.) Has this been discussed anywhere? I'd like to know what rules it follows, so I can work round it. Card Zero (talk) 20:46, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Wikimedia uses librsvg as the renderer for SVG-graphics. It is fast but also not feature complete and has a lot of ugly bugs. This problems were discussed multiple times. But until now no better renderer, that would be fast enough was found. Maybe it helps you to look up the development pages of this renderer. An suitable alternative is to upload the SVG and a PNG version of the file. SVG for further editing and PNG for displaying, until the render issues are resolved. -- /人 ‿‿ 人\ 苦情処理係 20:53, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Do you think Wikimedia is using the latest version (which seems to be 2.34.0, released a few weeks ago)? Card Zero (talk) 21:04, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
I guess not. The last time i found some information on it, the version that was used was 1 year older then the current release. Don't know when it was updated for the last time. -- /人 ‿‿ 人\ 苦情処理係 21:17, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Change comment in file history?

At File:Miss_Warrior_(Black_Base), version of 20:08, 15 March 2011 (scroll down to the lowest row of File History): It is actually nowhere in use, and has a completely misleading wrong comment. Such comment can confuse later use, and the records of the artist and art history. There is a second version of the image in use, same size and quality, with small comment, the right name of the image mentioned.

How to correct the wrong comment in the File History of the first version? If not possible, is there any possibility, just to delete this version of the image completely? The second version would stay and do its job perfectly. No further interference neccessary, just a plain delete.--Fluss (talk) 11:10, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

I say don't worry about it. Many images have inaccurate statements in their history. If you really feel a clarification is needed, add the clarification to the corresponding talk page. - Jmabel ! talk 15:05, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

How to move images to enwp?

I currently have an article at FAC and the image reviewer has suggested two of the images be moved from Commons to enwp. Is there a way of moving images, without having to take screenshots and re-upload? Thanks. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 01:42, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Are you talking about en:File:Olivia Shakespear.png and en:File:Yeats Celtic Twilight.png? Both file are locally at enwp. If I understood correctly they are discussing the move from enwp to Commons. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:51, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
No it's File:Maud Gonne.jpg, but I've figured it out. Now I have to add a permission to File:Ezra Pound.jpg which was published in both the UK and the US in 1922, but which tag do I add? Thanks again. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 03:15, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, okay, but I cannot see why you want to move File:Maud Gonne.jpg to enwp. But, okay.
And for File:Ezra Pound.jpg: I do not know what you want to change here. Everything is fine for this file. However, it is not necessarily public domain in non-US countries. For example not in Germany. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 15:53, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm just following the instructions from the image reviewer. Anyway, I think I have it figured out - maybe. Thanks for your help. Am obviously a bit confused myself. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 16:34, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
The issue in question at the FAC is the copyright status of the images in the UK, where they were apparently first published: they're obviously PD in the USA, having been published before 1923, but their status in the UK is in dispute. Since en:wp only requires that images be free in the USA, they definitely are okay by local policy, but since we here require them to be free in both the USA and the source country, they might be problematic here, and en:wp featured articles can't have images that are at any risk of deletion. Nyttend (talk) 01:48, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
It is UK - ah okay, sure - didn't notice this. Regarding your original question: If this an image is possible under fair use: Just save the file, and reupload at enwp using the fair use upload form. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:46, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
There's no need for a claim of fair use: simply use en:Template:PD-US and en:Template:Do not move to Commons. Nyttend (talk) 13:56, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Commons Photographs

I want to save a photograph from wikimedia commons to my own computer--how is that accomplished.

While on a file page, click Download, and select the resolution at the bottom of the screen that pops up. Then right-click, click save and save the image to a nice spot on your computer. Regards, TBloemink (talk) 18:25, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
TBloemink, I'm not sure what you mean by "click Download": there's no such button on the page, and I can't think of anything by that name in any common browser.
What I do (in Firefox) is first to click on the image itself (or the text 'Full Resolution' below the image) to get a maximum-resolution version of the image. Then (in Firefox - this might be different on a different browser) I right-click on the image, select 'Save Image As...', and save to an appropriate location on my computer. - Jmabel ! talk 00:27, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
We have a "Download" button for some browsers (no IE as it freezes) generated by our stockphoto icons. But right clicking the "full resolution" link below the image or right clicking on the image and then "save target as" is my preferred way (as I have switched off those icons anyway). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:52, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

I have gone to the file page of the Commons photograph I want to save to my computer, but once there, I am not seeing a download prompt?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Happyforks (talk • contribs) 2011-04-21T18:43:36 (UTC)

There are many ways to download an image:
  • For small images, you can open them in browser and then drag them to a folder in your PC.
  • For downloading full resolution‎ file, you can right click on "Full resolution‎" link below the images and then save the link to your PC, different browsers have different names for this, like "Save Link As..." in Fire Fox.
  • You can use the toolbar above the files, click on "download" icon in the toolbar and then choose the resolution‎ you like, right click on it and save it to your PC.

Thumbnail feature is broken for some files

The thumbnail for maze type number was working originally but broke recently despite no changes to the file or article. I just re-uploaded the image and the old thumbnail started working again but the new thumbnail is now broken- perhaps there's a break in name resolution? Follow the link above and if the error is still happening you will see the broken new thumbnail and the working old thumbnail one atop the other. Seems to be a system issue somewhere, and it's effecting the rendering of the wikipedia "mazes" topic. I see the system notice that thumbnail serving is slow, but this appears to be a complete break in the system so I'm reporting it... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Efbrazil (talk • contribs) 2011-04-11T19:08:02 (UTC)

I did also see another old file with no thumb some hours ago (but it had one in the past). I guess the "slow" thumbnailing does also include no thumbnails at all. So please just wait and to not upload unnecessary new versions of the same file. By the way: I can see old and new thumbnail. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:25, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Similar issues with image thumbnails in other pages: b:Knowing Knoppix/Other applications and b:Guide to X11/Window Managers/twm. The file in question is File:Wilber gimp2.2.8 Knoppix4.0.2.png. The file thumbnail does not display in pages, but the file page does show the file, even in thumbnail form below the description. Attempting to access the thumbnail URL (copied from a placeholder) yields a 403 Forbidden error by nginx/0.7.65. -Mardus (talk) 11:41, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
Forgot to add that this happens in all kinds of browsers: Google Chrome 10, Mozilla Firefox 3.6, SeaMonkey 1.1.19, K-Meleon 1.5.4 (through Wine), and Internet Explorer 7. I am experiencing this in Estonia. -Mardus (talk) 11:48, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
I can confirm this file's issue (Firefox, Germany): displays only the standard thumbs from the file's page but not unsual thumb sizes. 403 error then. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 14:27, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Sourcing.

I uploaded a compilation of transit services from MTA Maryland on March 9, 2011 [1]. I own ALL the images used in the compilation, which I did specify. I'm just being told from a user, after recently uploading a new version of the file, that I need to add a source. And I have to upload all the images used in the compilation to verify they are mine, and I have to backlog them to the compilation. I've seen similar compilations from other users, and they did not have to do what I'm being told that I have to do (they've claim they own the individual photos in their compilations as well). So why do I have to do it if they didn't have to. Once again I do own the individual photos, and CAN upload them to prove I do own them. But if they didn't have to do this, why do I?--ETLamborghini (talk) 23:08, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

I don't really see a problem with what you did, but in general with something like this it would be more useful to potential reusers to upload the individual images and clearer to everyone to then reference those individual images as the sources for the montage. - Jmabel ! talk 00:32, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
Very interesting case. I think you're right, and I think you shouldn't have to provide the other images for this to be accepted. Work in accepted based on good faith of the uploader to be truthful in claiming self-produced work, and it's not necessary for you to upload the images with EXIF data as 'proof' that you took them. That said, it would be a service to the community and a meaningful contribution to make those images available. Wikimedia Commons, however, is a frustrating and terrible place to do that. My suggestion to you is to use Flickr or a similar site that is easy to use, has bulk upload options, and has Creative Commons licensing options, then add a link to the album in the image as a courtesy. Bildersuche

--rimshottalk 19:32, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Bad upload or thumbnail problem

In the file File:Floyd County, Iowa Museum Building pic2.jpg it displays the dreaded crosspatch pattern with a red X and file name. I am the original up-loader and I think it uploaded correctly. I tried to upload a new version and I tried a revert to the original but have not had any success. I have the original file retained on my computer if a new upload is needed. I am new at the picture taking and uploading so if someone with more experience can solve this problem and/or give me instructions I would appreciate it.
Thanks--RifeIdeas Talk 23:33, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

We have some minor software problems since weeks. Your upload and the image is probably fine (see on the bottom of the file's page: there are the thumbnails of both oldest versions). Also the file displays if you click the full resolution link. I'd say: just wait some hours, I tried already to purge the page. If it still does not work maybe uploading once again under a new file name would be an option (and Speedy delete the broken file). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:01, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
Works for me now. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:32, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

SVG image won't render

I don't understand, I took an existing image, only changed the colors, and it won't render it to different sizes so that it can be used in articles. File:Nuclear power plant blue.svg, you can click on the image itself and the browser will easily show it as an svg, but Wikimedia Commons won't render it as different sizes png. What did I do wrong? Theanphibian (talk) 14:58, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Commons:SVG_Check (http://toolserver.org/~jarry/svgcheck/stable/) helps you do find errors before(!) uploading - check the box.
fixed: opened in inkscape, Menu File → save as → file type: plain svg → done. You should always do so when makeing svgs fro wikimedia. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:29, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

Upload fails

Hello friends!

I´ve been trying to upload an image of mu own making, but COMMONS refuse to complete the upload.

Can anyone help me figure out why this is happening?

We need more details. Do you receive an error message, a blank page, does it just upload forever, or what? Dcoetzee (talk) 11:04, 23 April 2011 (UTC)
I use the Upload Wizard, on step two "Upload" I select an image on my hard drive, click the button "Upload", and the process halts. The process indikator just keeps turning round and round.--Stringence (talk) 08:55, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

Blanket permission by OTRS?

Question: I have a friend who, when asked if he had any strong feelings against uploading certain pictures to Commons, said he didn't care much about the NC part of the license he's using at the moment, and gave me a blanket permission to upload whatever I felt could be used from his Flickr. However, he doesn't seem to feel strongly enough about the thing to want to go and change the license in every useful picture, since this would take time and energy he'd like to spend on other things.

Would it be possible to formulate a blanket permission for me to upload pictures from his Flickr account, if he sends his permission through the OTRS system and I refer to that every time? His e-mail address is connected to his own domain name. I was thinking of something along the lines of:

To permissions-commons@wikimedia.org

I hereby assert that I am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of WORKS at [ Flickr account ].

I agree to publish those works that Julle uploads under the free license [    free license of some kind   ].

I acknowledge that I grant anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product, and to modify it according to their needs, as long as they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws.

... and so on.

/Julle (talk) 05:29, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Yes, that would be just like when an organization gives us permission to scrape pictures from their website and publish under a particular license. You'll get back a number identifying the OTRS ticket, which you can use on all photos you upload from that user's Flickr account. - Jmabel ! talk 15:02, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
Great. I'll ask him to send that mail, then. /Julle (talk) 15:44, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
Except when he tried, he got the answer that OTRS can't be used for pictures on Flickr, and that he'd either have to change the license or upload them to Commons himself. Ah, well. /Julle (talk) 13:42, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Posting a publicity still image

I would like to post an image of a 1950's TV announcer on Wikimedia Commons. The image is from a publicly released photo the TV station handed out to the press and public back in the 1950's. I don't see any type of description of this type of PD image on the posting images page. Anyone have an idea what I would use as the PD?

You don't mention what country; in the US if it was from the 1950s and there was no copyright notice, then this is probably PD, but in most other countries it would not be. - Jmabel ! talk 00:31, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

what license? how to use it?

I have recently uploaded two images from another webpage. I've sent e-mails to owners asking permission to use it on wikipedia and got it. Both me and the company providing the images are based in the Netherlands. There is a very long list of copyright versions and Im not sure how to use it. Please use ~~~~ to sign your postings. Add to the image and read COM:OTRS. Permission for wikipedia is not enough. If it is for example for en.wikipedia.org, you can upload it there under fair-use. Otherwise we need a free license. Wrong licensing

Hi. I recently uploaded File:K.W.Truscott and K.B. Chisholm, 452 Squadron, September 20, 1941.jpg, from the Australian War Memorial [2]. Somehow I chose the wrong license button. Now its says its my own work - obviously it isnt. Its public domain, but still, this needs to be rectified and I have no idea how to fix it. Sorry about that, having successfully done a couple of my own photos I must have got over confident. Can it be deleted - or changed easily? Nickm57 (talk) 11:20, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

How exactly do you save .svg images to your computer? I want to take an .svg image from commons and mess around with it in Inkscape. How do I do that? Seems like a newb question but I honestly can't seem to figure it out. Am I missing something? Swarm (talk) 22:19, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

I'll talk you through it.
  • Find the page - Help:SVG -useful to read and it has a sample .svg File:Letters SVG.svg
  • Click on the image-you will get the usually description page
  • Click on the image again- you will just see the image and a lot of white space
  • On the browser bar- select File- select Save page as Letters SVG.svg and it will be saved to your desktop. Its now yours to play with-- have fun. --ClemRutter (talk) 00:06, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
Or, right click on the link Letters_SVG.svg directly below the image on its description page and select "save target as..." (or similar - depending on your browser).
Or, right click on the image itself on its description page and select "save target as..." (or similar - depending on your browser). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:54, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

licensing

if i want to upload a picture which is 100% my own work, then in the licensing section of the upload form what i should select? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fraz.khalid1 (talk • contribs)

If you choose "entirely my own work" already, there should only be compatible licenses listed. It is your decision whether the uploads should be in PublicDomain (PD) or Copyleft (GFDL, CC-BY-SA) or you want to be credited (CC-BY) only. Attribution of credit

Dear Wikimedians,

I have just registered as a user under username "michermann". I am quite impressed with your work and wanted to contribute to it in a systematic manner.

My name is Michael Hermann. How can I make sure somebody using my images credits me as the author under my real name (Michael Hermann) rather than my wikimedia name (michermann). Can I specify how an attribution of credit needs to be made, e.g."Photograph by Michael Hermann, CFF, Malaysia"?

Is there a way for me to generate a little report or list of the contributions I will eventually have made to document my contribution to Wikimedia for my own purposes (vis-a-vis the institution I work for, etc.).

Finally, would there be a way to generate a report on the download frequency of the files I uploaded?

Please advise

Kindly

Michael —Preceding unsigned comment added by Michermann (talk • contribs)

First, welcome to commons! If you get no response here, you may also ask your question on my discussion page.
To specify credit, navigate to your image and replace |Author =Michermann with |Author =Michael Hermann. In the licensing section you may replace with .
I don't know a report, but you can use the Special:ListFiles/Michermann or the Toolserver. -- RE rillke questions? 09:15, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Hi, Michael; we have no way of tracking number of downloads, though usage on Wikimedia projects (Wikipedias, Wiktionaries, etc.) is listed on each file's description page. Powers (talk) 13:11, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
And it still won't make sure people credit you correctly, but it will increase the chance. The simple fact is that most reuses I've seen of my own work didn't conform to the license terms. - Jmabel ! talk 15:36, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

File seems to be missing om Commons, though the upload is still there

Since about a week, the file seems to be missing on http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alkmaar_Cheesemuseum.JPG: no picture is shown. This also happens on the page that uses this image: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luifel. However, the original upload can still be downloaded from Commons. What happened? Do I have to download the original and reupload it? Kind regards, Encyo (talk) 15:00, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

It's fine, you're just seeing a symptom of an ongoing problem with (some) thumbnails. There is no problem with the underlying image, everything is OK in the database. - Jmabel ! talk 15:21, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

File replace request

Please replace File:CroatiaGradZagreb.png with File:CroatiaGradZagreb1.png (same image, but now with transparency). —Preceding unsigned comment added by PrisonerOfIce (talk • contribs)

You forgot to specify a license. Please add it or NikBot will notify you. Next time, if the images are similar, feel free to overwrite (upload under the same name). -- RE rillke questions? 08:30, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
I couldn't, apparently my account is too new to overwrite. It therefore said to upload under a different name and to ask someone on the helpdesk to overwrite. The license is exactly the same as the original, so I wrote this into the upload. PrisonerOfIce (talk) 11:29, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
Ok, you did everything right, but I am sorry because I can't help here. This is a task for an admin ... or I have to download and reupload (but then my name is in the revision history and I did not do the work). I suggest, you wait 4 days an then, overwriting should work. -- RE rillke questions? 11:38, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
It doesn't matter if your name is in the revision history, adding the transparency was literally a two-click task in the GIMP... it's trivial. So, anybody here to move the file?? Otherwise, if I remember, I'll reupload some time later... PrisonerOfIce (talk) 06:16, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

✓ Done. Powers (talk) 13:20, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

I think we should change this advice. It would be easier for helpers here and for newbies to just be told: wait until your account is more than 4 days old and upload a new version then. If it is urgent please upload under new name and ask at helpd desk. Opinions? And where is this message? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:40, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
"upload under new name" is sufficient .. --  Docu  at 05:17, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
huh? why? If it is an error correction - eg. spelling - then it should be definitely the same file name. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 11:57, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Using images found on Commons in print

Hi, I was wondering how one might go about using some of the images found on wikicommons in a book? (With proper attribution ofcourse). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.63.75.210 (talk • contribs) 2011-04-29T05:14:33 (UTC)

See Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia.
And: You need to read the specific license requirements on the images' pages to see what is required. Some (example: File:Fujitsu ext CD (named MiniCD).png) may require nothing at all. Some give you a set of licenses from which you can choose the license you like most (example: File:Heldrastein_thueringen.jpg). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 12:06, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Uploading/Adding images to pages

I'm not very computer/technical adept and I simply have 3 images of the box covers of board games that are explained on widipedia.

The games are all from around the early 80's but have loyal following of fans and it would be nice to have a photo reference to these board games.

The images I have are of Rail Baron, Kings Court and Tailsman.

Is there anyone or anyway I can just attach these images to a email and send them to someone who can do the editing/adding to the respective wikipedia pages? Thanks, Tim S.

User names

Hi! I've been using this user name (User:Surtsicna) so far on Wikimedia Commons. However, today I signed in on bs.wiki as and forgot to uncheck "Log me in globally"; therefore, when I opened Wikimedia Commons, I was signed in as User:Amsal instead. I uploaded File:His Serene Highness The Prince of Monaco and Miss Charlene Wittstock.jpg using that account. I've checked Commons:Questionable Flickr images and it seems to me that the photograph is OK. My question is: is it possible to redirect one account to another or to somehow make it clear that I am the owner of both accounts so that I am not accused of sock-puppetry? I would like to keep the older account because I've used it to upload a number of useful photographs. Surtsicna 16:30, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

No fear for being "accused of sock-puppetry". Not as long you do not misuse your second account - e.g. in votes.
I suggest you get your old account User:Amsal here renamed to Surtsicna. → Commons:Changing username. And ask in the same step for a rename of the current/new user:Surtsicna to user:Surtsicna2 or similar. Then all uploads of User:Amsal will show up as uploads from Surtsicna.
