Image not showing up in any category

Uploaded a file from Flickr today File:Fabregas and Eriksen.jpg and somehow it doesnt show up in any category. For this reason the bot couldn't review it. Any ideas why did this happen and how can it be solved? Tried purging cache but it did nothing. Dudek1337 (talk) 19:42, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

A delay with the categories happens sometimes, when servers are encumbered with tasks to perform. In this case, the file showed up in the categories after some time. But the bot can't review anyway because the image is cropped. A user reviewed it. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:09, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

How to get total number of uploads by one user?

I would like to know how many images I have uploaded to Commons. Is there a tool for this? Thanks. -- M2545 (talk) 14:30, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Uploading Images of Postage Stamps From 1914-1926 from my collection

I have started work on expanding the information in the Wikibook "World Stamp Catalogue" and several of the images I uploaded, which I scanned from my own collection, were removed by a bot as potential copyright violation. The stamps were issued by a now-defunct political entity, the French Protectorate of Morocco, between the years 1914 and 1926.

How can there be any copyright claim to these images when the regime that issued them no longer exists and the items were issued 90-100 years ago?

I request the images please be restored. If I am marking items incorrectly based on fair use for items in the public domain, please let me know how I should correctly notate such items as I upload them, as I was having great difficulty trying to understand the process. DJCMH (talk) 09:28, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

The descriptions are incomplete. They are missing the identification of the authors and their death years, which are used to determine the duration of the copyright in many countries. They are also missing a status tag, or at least a rationale, by which you explain the reasoning to conclude that the stamp is out of copyright. For example, the stamp File:FRMOR0059.jpg was designed by Joseph de la Nézière and engraved by Abel Michon (1861-1936). You should mention the authors in the "author" field. In that particular case you would also add to the page the status template PD-1923, if the stamp was issued in 1917, and the template PD-old-70 (or maybe PD-Morocco). Finally, you should mention clearly the source of the reproduction. If you scan the stamps yourself, you can probably make larger images than the very small ones. If you took them from a source, the url or the paper document should be mentioned. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:25, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
the stamps are from my own collection. I will redo the FRMOR0059 following your guidelines if you could tell me that I do it right then I will have a better idea if I am doing things right. (and stamp designer = author?? that is...odd. but ok :) DJCMH (talk) 19:14, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
I changed date from 2016 to 1917, added a PD-old-70 template and added specific categories. I think it's ok. But is there a particular reason why you don't upload a larger image? Very small images are not very useful. But if you want to have exactly the same images in the same size as the files that were deleted, the recommended procedure is not to upload duplicates, but instead to ask the admin who deleted the files to undelete them, and tell him that you will add the informations and tags that were missing. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:03, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
I am trying to keep the images small as once the pages are completed there will be a lot of images (one of each stamp in a set) so I think it makes sense to keep images in limited size, but high quality, to aid people wishing to identify a stamp they are looking at. If you want to go ahead and delete all of the other images I have uploaded besides the most recent FRMOROCCO0059.jpg that seems to be OK to use now that I have the license issue dealt with, I would appreciate it, and then I can start over fresh. DJCMH (talk) 21:11, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
Wikipedia users won't find things slower because the underlying images are larger, unless they click through to view them at high resolutions. Our software should always generate a thumbnail of appropriate size. - Jmabel ! talk 03:29, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Instagram photos being used

Hi there. I noticed all the photos on the Destroyer (band) page are images recently captured from Instagram. I took one of them, and I recognize the others. They were all added to Wikipedia by a single user. I don't object to my photo being used, but I'd like to be credited. Reading the FAQs, it seems that taking photos from social media is not allowed - do I understand correctly? I would happily "donate" my image. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destroyer_(band) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mcresur (talk • contribs) 18:48, 29 April 2016‎ (UTC)

  • Convenience links: File:Tdanbejar930clubphoto2.jpg, File:Destroyer and Dan Bejar in Islington.jpg, File:Destroyercommodoreballroom2015.jpg
  • You understand correctly. If you are the photographer, and if User:Threemonths is not your account, then that user is plagiarizing you in claiming these as his/her own work. @Threemonths: if you've got something to say about this, please speak up.
  • It would help enormously if in the "source" section of each of these photos you could correct that from {{Own}} to the Instagram URL where you originally posted the photo. Also, correct the "author" section to indicate yourself as the author.
  • If you are in fact open to "donating" these images under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International (the one Threemonths used, and the one that reserves the most rights for the copyright holder of any license acceptable here, so I recommend it), there are two ways to do this: either make that permission clear on the Instagram page (so someone can see it by following up the source) or use the approach laid out in COM:OTRS to grant permission to use a photo.
  • I hope that helps, let me know if you have any further questions. - Jmabel ! talk 20:50, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
I've nominated all of the remaining files uploaded by User:Threemonths for deletion. Given the circumstances, I don't think we can trust any of his/her authorship claims. Mcresur: It's great that you don't mind your photo being used, but to keep the photo on Commons, we would also need you to be okay with the photo being published under terms that allow anyone to use, modify and redistribute it (with correct attribution of course) for any purpose, including commercial purposes. In either case, if you could point out the original URL, that would be a helpful first step. Thanks, LX (talk, contribs) 08:17, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Question about using image from NATO website

I am interested if we are allowed to upload this image to Commons (or at least locally to English Wikipedia) so it could be used in Mr. Šundov's article. Here are the terms of use. Greetings, United Union (talk) 19:22, 30 April 2016 (UTC).

@United Union: NATO material cannot be used for commercial purposes, their "license" is revocable, can only be used for fair use, and cannot be used for some specific purposes. They are all incompatible with our licensing policy. Sorry, but you cannot upload it on Commons. But you can upload it locally on English Wikipedia using fair use. Thanks, Poké95 23:35, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
For fair use criteria (and how to tag) on the English language Wikipedia, see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. - Jmabel ! talk
Thank you all for your replies. United Union (talk) 08:27, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
Correction: no, you cannot upload it on English Wikipedia either, because according to English Wikipedia's non-free content guidelines and the Wikimedia Foundation's License Policy Resolution, it can be reasonably expected that any portrait of a living person may be replaced by a freely licensed alternative serving the same purpose. Good practices to categorize images and contributors interesting for a specific Wikipedia

Hi, I'm trying to help categorizing good images with an interest specific to Catalan Wikipedia. The first objective is to easily categorize files that are good candidates for ca.wiki's homepage (see w:ca:Viquipèdia:Imatge del dia). With this categorization we might also want to revive the selection of Featured Images in Catalan Wikipedia. We are also thinking in categorizing the user pages of the creators / uploaders of these images, in order to know each other and organize ourselves better. Are there any good practices by other Wikipedia communities that we could look at? Or any suggestions to solve these problems? Just for reference, this is the thread in ca.wiki: Organitzar els coŀlaboradors dels territoris catalanoparlants.--QuimGil (talk) 21:03, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Death of Shubael P. Peck 1838.JPG

Any chance of deleting Death of Shubael P. Peck 1838.JPG? I made a mistake with year of death and have put in another file with correct date and correct file name: Death of Shubael P. Peck 1837.JPG

Ted (sidpickle) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sidpickle (talk • contribs)

Done, but several questions:
  1. The headlines differed (font), and the typefaces do not appear 19th-century, so clearly these were not faithful reproductions. If these are just text you made up, of copied from somewhere, what is the point of presenting them as an image?
  2. You give the date as 1 May 2016, 18:35:42, not some date in 1837, which further confuses the matter.
  3. I find it very unlikely that any actual original referred to "internment" of the body, rather than "interment" (burial).
  4. There are no categories.
Ideally, you should address all of this, but most importantly: is the typography a visual reproduction of something from the 19th century, or is this modern typography? Assuming it is your typography, why would this be in Commons' scope? Further, is it a faithful quotation of a 19th century original (was the "internment" typo in the original)? - Jmabel ! talk 23:02, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
Also, looking through your past uploads, it looks like you are consistently failing to give any categories for your uploaded images. - Jmabel ! talk 23:04, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments. The press cutting is not clear and I have copied it as best I can on 1 May 2016. Alternatively if you want, to just destroy it if it is a real problem. I'll just make reference in my article to the newspaper. Press cutting sometimes offer the dramatic picture that the author of a Wikipedia article is not able to convey so they can be quite an effective way to tell the story and give the reader a flavour of the period. I have spent weeks researching this article so the odd error may be possible and I am still correcting factual issues. You should be aware that compositors did not have word processors in 1837 and they worked at an incredible rate so mistakes were made with spellings. Where do I find a list of these "categories"? Sidpickle (talk) 12:29, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

  • There are over 100,000 categories, so a "list" as such does not make sense. I'd suggest reading Commons:Categories, especially Commons:Categories#Categorization tips. It's OK if things are not categorized perfectly (plenty of people fixing them), but it very much helps if they are at least close.
  • You didn't really answer my questions. If this is not an actual visual representation of something from an 1837 newspaper then, at the very least, the description should make that clear; I have trouble understanding how it would still be within Commons' scope, but I suppose that is open to discussion. I take it that it is, indeed, not an actual visual representation, because I assume your remark about "the odd error may be possible" means this is a transcription. If you want just to quote text for something that is not otherwise available online, I would think WikiSource is more appropriate than Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 15:00, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Yikes, doesn't help that the step by step descriptions are in French! Also, seems the first method doesn't work anymore? FunkMonk (talk) 16:25, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
You want this image and that one. Just examine what the zoom viewer loads (i.e., display and examine its http requests), figure out what parts of the URLs are the coordinates, and then be a bit creative to construct a hand-crafted URL that gives you the whole thing at the maximum resolution. In this case the first two "native.jpg" files the zoom viewer fetches give you enough information to construct these two URLs. See also Help:Zoomable images. Lupo 21:00, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Eligibility of photo of my father

I would like to know whether or not I can upload a picture of my father to his Wikipedia page. It was taken circa 1960, and was a professional head shot taken for publicity purposes. I have no way of knowing what person/agency took this photo, and my father has passed away, so no information there. I would assume that any copyright would be expired. Emilylye (talk) 12:56, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

  • You don't say what country, but in most countries copyright would, sadly, not have expired. You also don't say which language Wikipedia; some of them have policies that would allow use of a non-free image in these circumstances within that Wikipedia (though it could not be uploaded to Commons without clearing up the copyright). - Jmabel ! talk 13:45, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

The error message can be seen when opening the thumbnail file directly. It looks like the thumbnail generator can't read the embedded font. The file seems OK when downloading it, so I don't think there is something wrong with it. As for a solution: if this is a server bug, you could file a bug report. If you have access to the Excel sheet that this file was created from, you can try (1) generating a PDF using a different tool (both MS Office and OpenOffice / LibreOffice can now generate PDFs directly), which might create a more compatible file, or (2) generate an SVG file. --rimshottalk 08:49, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

Fine Art pictures from deceased artist

Hello- I'm helping an archivist develop a wiki page for her deceased husband's illustrious career as an artist of fine art and illustrations. In other words he's not around to provide consent. Are we upload pictures of his fine art? His wiki is 'Gustav Rehberger' Thanks

The current copyright holder (presumably the widow and possible the children) will have to provide OTRS permission. You can then use {{Heirs-license}}. Note that if the artist sold or licensed the copyrights for some of his work during his life his heirs might not be the current copyright owners. Specific laws vary depending on country. Login problems

I'm suddenly getting repeated login problems, getting logged out, and then when I log in again, I'm told my password is invalid (even though I've been using it for the last 10 years or so, on all wikis). It then tells me to select a new password (which I'm reluctant to do), or 'cancel - change later'; only when I click 'cancel' does it log me in. It's happened on two different computers, and on more than one wiki (Commons, Wikispecies, and Wikidata so far). - MPF (talk) 00:06, 11 May 2016 (UTC)

University of Bielefeld, before the CITEC building

This image appears on the en:WP in the en:Alice's Adventures in Wonderland article, with a wonky caption: "University of Bielefeld, before the CITEC-building". In attempting to correct this to English -- does it mean "The front of..." or "Opposite..." or what? -- I tried looking for more images, of the CITEC building and of Alice murals in Bielefeld. And turned up absolutely nothing. There are those who claim Bielefeld does not even exist, but leaving that aside, can anyone establish where this mural is? Goldbach

Hello. Let me begin by saying THANK YOU!

I am building a website. Part of the "purpose" for this website, is to bring together about five Americans to create the "proof" document for Goldbach's Conjecture. The Americans can be anywhere in the World. I am limiting the team to Americans - because, I want the credit - for the mathematical proof statement to go to America - my country of birth. iN MY MIND - a demonstration of such ability is analogous to President Kenndy's "moon shot" effort - i.e. Just show the world that WE can do it.

Part of the visualization (of the problem) - of the testing needed - and proving etc. - can be seen with this graphic (URL following).

I would like permission to use this animation. I will fully credit the author-creator.

MORE INFO ABOUT ME FOLLOWS - the MathMatica forum wanted me to introduce myself.

Hello. I am THE Susan Marie Cassady Neuhart who designed and implemented the original art program (circa 1993) for Fishbane: PHYSICS ( a textbook for scientists and engineers). If you have a copy, then you know the "original" college-level textbook, consisted of 1,233 pages plus problems. Prentice-Hall was the Publisher and Distributor.

I also graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay campus. And, I had the great honor of working with Dr. Jaiyuan Fang Phd. - SIGRITY, Inc. (in California - before he sold his software - SPEED2000 - to CADENCE EDA software (for over $80 million dollars (circa 2003). As you may know, Dr. Fang is regarded as THE "father" of Signal Integrity - in the USA. I am honored to state that I am still in touch with Dr. Fang. Please - let us all wish him well - in his newest venture - a fundamental school for tomorrow's engineers... Who will - no doubt - help take the USA (and its allies) to Mars - in the coming years.

I also worked for other high-tech companies ... ( a few - like GE and NCR, etc.

My grandmother was : Ms. Zora Miller/Sprouse/Roby ( an American woman of Native American heritage.)

My mother was : Mary Elizabeth Sprouse.

My father is: Milo Gerald Cassady - In fact, the biological brother of Pearl and Francis Cassady. Uncle Pearl Cassady was Howard HOP-a-Long Cassady's father. HOP won the Heisman trophy ( while playing football - at Ohio State University). Hop's coach was Woody Hayes.

My (biological) daughter is the Deputy Chief Of Staff for the USA Federal Bureau of Investigation - Washington Offices. She was selected to serve - our country - by Mr. James Comey. Her bio is on the FBi website - under the executives area. In addition to what is stated - in the online document - Dawn - would like it to be known - she was born in Columbus, Ohio - when I was a teenager. She is a Graduate of Whitehall, high-school - and also attended classes - at Columbus State Community College; which, these experiences prepared her very well to attend her subsequent colleges and universities to obtain Masters and LAW Degrees. I am - obviously - a very proud mother! In fact, as any parent knows - it is the "choices" that we help our children to make and accept - that makes them WHO they turn out to be. IMO - Frederick Niche got it right!

That's my introduction - and some HISTORY.

My recent "project work" involves the "Goldbach Conjecture". I am trying to put together a team of Americans to develop a mathematical proof document - that will be "accepted" by the CMi judging team. And, like the moon-shot (under President Kennedy) - if we succeed, then we will make history. Membership on my Goldbach team will be entirely voluntary and unpaid. But, also, if we win, then the CMi folks have promised to award any person or "team" ONE Million Dollars. I am hoping to keep - our ALL American "team" to no more than five (5) people. So far, some professors of mathematics (emeritus and retired) have expressed interest - and, they are tutoring me - as needed - to develop the document. Our approach is (at present) is secret. But, if you know about the work that I did (at UWGB); then, you know that it involves programming. Dr. Fang - a former Professor at NYU and U.CALifornia (Santa Cruz) has declined participation - at present - (due to the strains of the "start-up" of his new private university in California). As the Goldbach team progresses - I have promised to keep Dr. Fang informed. He is both a hero and an inspiration - in my mind. In fact, (to me) he is the perfect example of everything that America is about. You see, Dr. Fang was born in China. The website that hosts this forum knows my email address - if anyone needs to contact me. My newest website is under construction - at present: Just Google: HansANDcassady for information on that. My husband (and also my hero - of over 30 years) is Hans Jeffery Neuhart ( the son of Kathryn and Kenny Neuhart - from New Concord, Ohio; which is, the birthplace of Senator John Glen - (also the USA astronaut - and Neal Armstrong also grew up in that same area. Hans is still working with Medical doctors and USA Scientists - to create needed technical illustrations. He is now under and "EiG" URL.

Bye now. - Susan

  • As I understand it, the only actual question in the above is about using File:Cylinder_-_hyperboloid_-_cone.gif. As it says on the file page, it is offered under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported. Either you can conform to that license (probably pretty easy for you to do) or you can contact User:Cmapm to make other arrangements (likely to be difficutly, because Cmapm last contributed to Commons over three years ago). - Jmabel ! talk 16:15, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

Adding Catscan search result to a category

Is there a way for adding a category to the Catscan search result? I'm bulk adding categories to my images, and using catscan to determine which images are missing categories. I'd like to use Catscan to find the images, then add a temporary category and finally use Commons Commander to add additional categories to the images. How can I accomplish this, with the start point being a Catscan search result?

Apologies if this question has been asked and answered before (I'm sure I'm not the first one trying to accomplish this), but searching the archive didn't return an answer. Toresetre (talk) 11:35, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

If I create an image using a software package such as PGF/TikZ am I free to license the image CC BY-SA even if the application has non-commercial designations? More generally, do the licenses of tools impact the license of products? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mathtom (talk • contribs)

@Mathtom: as long as the file confirms to Commons:File types, it will be fine. Assuming you are using PGF/TikZ, the tools license is GNU GPL which shouldn't affect your ability to license your work. Hope that helps. Green Giant (talk) 01:32, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

New categories don't show up in their parent cats

A few a hours ago I created Category:Naturschutzgebiet Steinheimer Becken. It still isn't visible in any of its parent cats Nature reserves in Landkreis Heidenheim, Steinheim am Albuch and Steinheim Basin. I purged all the categories, but to no avail. I have repeatedly, but inconsistently noticed this phenomenon in the past. Is there a general fix available? --Sitacuisses (talk) 23:33, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

Null editing the category will probably fix it, i.e., edit and save without changing anything. The bug is probably phabricator:T117332. --ghouston (talk) 04:09, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, a null edit did the trick for this specific cat. Still there must be more categories missing from the tree for the same reason, and you'll only find them by accident. --Sitacuisses (talk) 06:24, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

The categories are still not working when I'm uploading new files. Whatever I type as the first category, it disappears. All the other categories stay there. This is happening systematically and it's getting annoying. Is this going to get fixed? @Pokéfan95: There seem to be three "Categories:" entry rows on the upload form instead of just one. Apparently, if I enter the same first category in all three, it works. Entering it in just one or two causes the first category to disappear. JIP (talk) 20:31, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

This seems to have been finally fixed. I just uploaded File:Ticket vending machine at Munich airport.jpg and all categories I selected on the upload form appeared on the finished image. However, my originally selected preference to default to the old upload form instead of the Upload Wizard seems to have vanished. How can I put it back? JIP (talk) 20:26, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

@JIP: To make Upload Wizard your default uploading tool, go to your preferences, click the Gadgets tab, then go to the "Interface: Editing and Uploads" section, find Upload Wizard, and finally tick the box at the left of Upload Wizard. Poké95 02:25, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
But I want to do the exact opposite. "Upload Wizard" was already unchecked, so I also unchecked "Improved upload form". Hopefully now it defaults to the old form. JIP (talk) 05:22, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello there.

Im creating the page of TV personality Val Kahl: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Val_Kahl and the photo I uploaded was deleted. Im trying to do things right. I read it all but im confused: The person gave me the right to use it as she is the Copyright owner of this photo. I saw her at a red carpet and she asked me to take photos with her own camera.

Should she write an email mentioning she is the copyright owner ? Or should I write it ? Then where and what should I do for the photo to be accepted and uploaded properly so I can finish nicely and properly her page ?

Thank you very much for your kind help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fandemiss75 (talk • contribs) 22:47, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Yes, we need an email from the copyright holder if either (1) the uploader is a different person or (2) the picture has been previously published without indication of the same license. See COM:OTRS for what we need; if anything there is unclear, ask again here. By the way, if you took the photo, then legally you are probably the copyright owner (you don't say what country, and things like that aren't universally the same). - Jmabel ! talk 23:23, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Need help removing page from appearing inside category

Somehow there was a page created for an image, inside the category Category:Grote of Sint-Jacobskerk (The Hague). On the page for file File:Interieur, koor, gebrandschilderd glas, Karel V, detail - 's-Gravenhage - 20365072 - RCE.jpg I can not find how it got connected to the category. Since the image file has already been categorized in Category:Stained glass windows in Grote of Sint-Jacobskerk (The Hague), it is a duplicate. Can someone please tell me how I can disconnect the file from appearing as a page inside the category Category:Grote of Sint-Jacobskerk (The Hague) ? --OSeveno (talk) 11:01, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Are you sure you don't see it in the pages section? It's very strange indeed. I can't find an explanation. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:59, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
I'm quite sure. I re-checked just now. - Jmabel ! talk 19:21, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
I still see it. Anyway, an ordinary caching problem would not explain this surprising type of situation. There must be something else. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:40, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
Have you tried clearing your cache and using the purge function? Poké95 04:47, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
I had not looked at that category before OSeveno asked the question above, so at least it would not have been in the cache of my system. A cache problem might explain why some users see it while some other users don't see it. But other questions are: Why would the file page have been listed in the pages section of the category? And why would it have remained stuck there more than a year after the removal of the category from the file page? Is that usual? -- Asclepias (talk) 11:44, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

The file was assigned to the category until oldid=159603201 (3 May 2015). Now it should have disappeared, but I can see it still there. I tried to purge both the image page and the category page, also made null edits on both of them – and the image is still displayed there. Note, however, it is not displayed as an image in the Media in category section, but rather as a page in the Pages in category section – although the page has a File: prefix. --CiaPan (talk) 10:14, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

...and there actually exist some pages with File: prefix in the main (gallery) space!
See https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:AllPages?from=File&to=&namespace=0
CiaPan (talk) 10:19, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
That's interesting, because, at first sight, many of those files seem to have things in common (beginning of filenames ...). A systematic examination might provide a clue to the source of the problem. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:18, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
IMVHO we may face duplicate pages here. I guess that due to some user or database error some copies of those File: pages were improperly registered in the main space and they can't be removed now by ordinary means. They can't be even displayed, because the software delivers pages from the File: space when you provide a name with the File: prefix. Some more direct access to the database would be needed to investigate technical aspects of the situation and to fix it.
Is it time for some COM:AN request...? --CiaPan (talk) 11:31, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
It could be that. A search in "everything" for the file name, without the namespace prefix, returns two different entries [3]. One is "654 bytes (0 words) - 09:24, 27 January 2015" and the other is "(783 × 1,200 (147 KB))". But clicking on the link of the first one leads to the page of the second one. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:01, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
It seems that the problematic page was created by YaCBot in 2015 [4]. (Whereas the real "file" page existed since 2013.) -- Asclepias (talk) 15:35, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Actually, it seems that all the problematic "duplicate" pages were created by the bot YaCBot on January 27, 2015. Compare your list from Special:AllPages with the list of pages created by YaCBot: [5]. But there's the same problem that the links there don't link to those problematic "ghost duplicate" pages (which we want to delete) but they link instead to the legitimate original pages (which we want to keep) with the same names. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:31, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Could you, please, see the link to Special:AllPages I gave above? --CiaPan (talk) 11:43, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

@Pokéfan95: Could you, please, see the link to Special:AllPages I gave above? --CiaPan (talk) 13:22, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Same as Jmabel. I have no idea why those files are considered to be in the gallery namespace. Maybe we should report this to Phabricator. Poké95 00:06, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
I think it is time to report this to Phabricator. I've have tried purging caches, null edits, categorising and de-categorising, and finally I tried deleting it. The software wouldn't let me, stating the following: Exception encountered, of type "Wikibase\Client\Usage\UsageTrackerException" so this is clearly something beyond our limited abilities. I have filed a report of sorts at Phab:T135577. Green Giant (talk) 01:05, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
I have tried moving the actual file away to see if this "uncovers" the ghost file, but with no success, it seems. Also, I am not aware of any issues on that day in Jan 2015 specifically with YaCBot. Potentially this was a general issue on that day and YaCBot was hit with the bullet so often due to having a relatively high edit count. --McZusatz (talk) 16:28, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
@Green Giant, Pokéfan95, and McZusatz: Here is a note from Phab:T135577: 'Lydia_Pintscher closed this task as a duplicate of T135485: [Bug] File deletion problem on commons.wikimedia.org.' --CiaPan (talk) 14:13, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
In T135485, comments seem on an incomplete diagnosis, because an action performed on October 16, 2015 can't have caused a problem that occurred on January 27, 2015. T135485 and T135577 seem to share a page deletion problem, but the deletion problem of a file mentioned by Green Giant could be a different problem or a consequence of the basic problem that is discussed here, which is the involuntary creation of duplicate pages in the wrong namespace, pages that not only can't be deleted but can't even be accessed or modified. That seems like something that should at least be investigated, if it hasn't been already. The title of T135577 by McZusatz was a better description of the problem. Maybe users who have access to Phabricator could leave somewhere in T135485 just a little updated link to this section here, so the people there can be aware of the whole problem? -- Asclepias (talk) 00:53, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Apparently, the system often has difficulty to display the contributions history results that include the duplicate pages. So, for the record, here is a list of the 45 affected pages, with the time (UTC) when the "duplicates" were created (presumably in the main namespace) by YaCBot. The edit comments indicate that the bot intended to make edits to the existing pages. But for some reason the result was the creation of the duplicate pages. This list does not include the dates of creation of the original pages (in the file namespace), which predate the creation of their duplicates.:

Just upload (or point at the existing) JPEG image (or images) and ask for creation of an appropriate SVG image. --CiaPan (talk) 19:35, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
Thank you I'll try that. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 11:29, 21 May 2016 (UTC)
PS Had a closer look. Things look pretty stale there. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 11:32, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

It is not reflected category.

Register the category of not creating a plurality of image files, when I try to create that category, "in this category currently, the page and the media do not have anything" has been displayed. I did not have a spelling mistake of the category name. Because the cause is not know I in trouble.--M-sho-gun (talk) 02:47, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Something is broken in Commons at the moment. The jobs queue is increasing and category changes etc. are not getting processed [6]. Any changes you make will turn up later once it's fixed. I don't know who to ask to fix it however. --ghouston (talk) 03:07, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
The October lag is back again, so that's why you won't see categories updated. Poké95 11:56, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

Odd notification

Can anyone imagine why I got a notification for this edit? The previous edit triggered a notification, which was of course correct (it's projectspace, signed by the editor who made the edit, and there's a link to my username), but the second one deleted {{Delh}} (not something that would be transcluding a link to my userpage, tweaked some text in a message, and added some text with no links to any userpages except that of the editor who made the edit. Nyttend (talk) 01:54, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

I think that was normal. Courcelles edited a part of a paragraph containing a wikilink of your username, so that's why you're notified. I think this cannot be fixed techinically. Poké95 11:54, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

Workflow for uploading derivative works

Are there any tricks for efficiently uploading derivative works (cropped and retouched photos, specifically)? Whenever I do it I find that the process involves a lot of manual copy / paste, looking up template documentation, and some uncertainty about whether I am doing things right. --Ori Livneh (talk) 02:17, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Tried uploading a corrected version under image history under my uploads.

Tried using the upload option under image history to upload a corrected version of the File:Tijuana airport cross-border terminal land options.jpg but initially what appeared was the old version of the image. Tried to upload the corrected version a second and third time and then it appeared, but on the Wikipedia article Cross Border Xpress the old version still appears, is there a lag between uploading a new version of an image and it appearing on the article? Can the duplicate uploads be deleted? The correct version is the one I tried to upload May 22. Thank you Rnieders (talk) 20:43, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

The thumbnail versions are cached so that they don't need to be regenerated each time the page is viewed. They should update eventually. It may be possible to speed it up by forcing the browser to reload the page (shift-reload, or whatever), or by purging the file page. --ghouston (talk) 23:14, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

I would like to use two pictures found here, from the middle of the page OLD SCRANTON and PATTERN OF VIOLENCE.

The publication is from 1957. But it appears that the pictures themselves are from much earlier, and I expect they are in the public domain, but I really don't know how to substantiate that. Any help would be appreciated. Timothyjosephwood (talk) 15:49, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Provide as much information as possible about each image, its source, author, first publication etc. The LIFE image credits, on page 2 of this issue, usually useful, don't help much in this case and mention only the source of those images as "Culver", which may have been an image collection. From other sources, you can find that the second image, on pages 32 and 33 of the 1957 magazine, was originally published on page 401 in the August 18, 1877 issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. The credit on that page mentions only "from a sketch by our special artist", but said artist may be identified on another page, if you can find a copy of the paper. To indicate the copyright status, you can use the template PD-1923. Note that Commons already has a copy of this image. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:20, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
Oh hey, yeah. That's already on the article. I didn't realize it was a crop of the same image. I was more interested in the cityscape image. Looks like that may be a no go. Timothyjosephwood (talk) 22:16, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Index form didn't come up

Hi, I'm new to Wikimedia Commons and I'm trying to make an index page: Index:Relief Society Magazine 1.1.djvu. I pulled the scans from archive.org without difficulty: File:Relief Society Magazine 1.1.djvu. When I went to create the index page, the help page said it would bring up a form, but it didn't. Did I do something wrong? Thanks Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 19:24, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

New to this and not sure how the licensing works. In the upload wizard there was an option to say it was created by the US Federal government, this was not but I believe it is in the public domain for similar reasons, it was created by the European Council, a section of the European Union. Can someone guide me on how best to indicate this? --CSJJ104 (talk) 17:14, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Works created by EU employees are not automatically in public domain. So, nothing similar. Ruslik (talk) 17:19, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply @Ruslik0: , but just to check, and I realise I should have been more detailed, if the file is the text of the conclusions of a council meeting, is it not in the public domain at all? The copyright policy is in [7]. Ruslik (talk) 12:20, 24 May 2016 (UTC)

Licence question

File:TATA Kestrel.jpg & File:Kestrel-rws.jpg this two files have been deleted from wiki commons for being copyrighted. This two images were taken from http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3120207/posts this site. I thought those were not copyrighted. Are those really copyrighted? would appreciate very much if someone replies and help me with the copyright issues.--Ayon Biswas95 (talk) 22:32, 25/05/2016 (IST)

Why so you think they're not copyrighted? It's your task to prove that, if you're taking images from the Internet. --Magnus (talk) 18:48, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
Most things are copyrightable are copyrighted by default. Almost every recent (meaning at least the last 50 years, usually more) photo, logo, work of art, etc. will be copyrighted, although there are certain exceptions. But if you don't know your way around what is excepted, go on the assumption that everything is copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 19:29, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
The Freerepublic site you mention is not a source of copyright-free images. In fact, the home page of that site has a statement which says, "Most of the sourced material posted to Free Republic is posted according to the 'fair use' doctrine of copyright law for non-commercial news reporting, education and discussion purposes" - this means they are allowing contributors to use copyrighted images legally, within certain limitations. It doesn't give you the freedom to then lift something off the Freerepublic site and add it to Wikimedia. Unless an image is explicitly labelled as free, assume that someone owns the copyright. It's disappointing, but there are other places to look for free images - here's a guide to help you. There's even a military section, which may interest you. Happy researching!Cnbrb (talk) 22:06, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

Can't seem to figure out how to legaly use this picture, on line, outside of US

I've been going round an round in links to try and determine the policy regarding usage of this picture, for an official site outside of the US. Please help. File:House_Dust_Mite.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 147.237.70.103 (talk) 14:22, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

  • It would help to say what country. Most countries don't grant copyright to U.S. gov't images that the U.S. gov't releases directly into the public domain, but perhaps some do. And you might get better advice at Commons:Village pump/Copyright, where more people with serious knowledge of various countries' copyright laws tend to participate. - Jmabel ! talk 16:39, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
The uploader to Commons stated that the source was from the May 1996 issue of FDA Consumer, which was a magazine of the FDA. The online archived copy has a poor version of the image, but if you assume that the Commons image was from the original magazine, the notice of the magazine read "Articles in FDA Consumer may be republished without permission. Credit to FDA Consumer as the source is appreciated." [8]. The magazine article doesn't seem to mention anything specific about its own source for the image, so the image might be assumed to be included in that generic permission for the articles. If you want to be extra safe, you could contact the FDA. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:15, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Concerning a new version of a file

Good Day. i uploaded yesterday a new version of this file, but the File history showed no change at all, thus i uploaded it again, yet no changes occurred, only thing is this time, the previous version appeared in the file history as it should. check it. That's the 1st time i came across something like this. Is there an error or should i wait for the changes to take effect?--باسم (talk) 15:11, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Looks fine to me. Presumably just a caching problem.
  • When this happens, you don't gain anything by uploading a second time, the caching issue will be the same. - Jmabel ! talk 16:42, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
  • Resolved - Yup it's probably a caching issue, Either close the tab or wait for about 30 minutes and it should update itself (after refreshing the page), Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 18:34, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Help with disappearing page?

I'm new here! Last night I tried to submit a wikipedia page I had created for review. Today, there is no evidence of the article--is this a normal thing? I'm not sure if it just takes some time to be reviewed/uploaded, or if I somehow didn't save it correctly. Help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sarahkaplangould (talk • contribs) 14:42, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

You're in the wrong project, this is Commons. Your draft is here. --Magnus (talk) 15:00, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

photos

I am working on an article about a notable person from a university. The university has stock photos of this person. Can I use one of them in my article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hedybaker (talk • contribs) 18:18, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Hedybaker: No, not unless the legitimate copyright holder has explicitly published the photo under a free license or waived their copyright. See Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Press photos. You certainly cannot upload it and claim that you created it, as you did with File:Hai-lung-dai.jpg. Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what you can and cannot upload to Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 19:08, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
  • (separate answer, we were both typing at the same time.) It is very unlikely that the image would be welcome on Commons. You don't say the terms under which the stock photos are made available, etc., but almost always the answer will turn out to be that the image is copyrighted and the terms under which the stock photos are made available are incompatible with Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain. And, assuming you mean an article in the English-language Wikipedia, while they have some exceptions allowing the use of certain non-free images to be uploaded directly to the English-language Wikipedia (leaving Commons out of the picture), they don't accept pictures of living people on that basis.- Jmabel ! talk 19:15, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
