Is there a Groninger village pump?

Is there a variant of the Village Pump, or Tavern/Pub (De Kroeg) in Low-Saxon? I would like to announce the launch of Commons:WikiProject Numismatics there, but for some reason can't find any other Low-Saxon page than Veurblad. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 14:23, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

You can announce on nds-nl:Wikipedie:Praothoek. Ruslik (talk) 18:57, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
Well, that's not exactly relevant to Wikimedia Commons, but thank you for your answer. I guess that there is no Praothoek here. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 15:24, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

How can I import .pdf's?

I thought 💭 that .pdf's couldn't be imported because the format is patented (or trademarked) but today I found files 📁 such as File:7. Manual de malf congenitas...pdf which are .pdf's, so how can I import files like this? If it is possible for me to create them, am I allowed to use them on other Wikimedia projects like Wikisource? --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 14:36, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

Check image license

Would someone be able to check if File:C-FWEP Westjet Encore Dash 8-Q400.jpg is indeed okay and I have correctly attributed the author and applied the right license? Thank you so much, Mkdw (talk) 07:42, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Merge two files

I uploaded File:Huang Zongying wedding.jpg, and then used the crop tool to crop it. Please review DiCamillo Bakery logo. I believe it if of fair usage. The image is taken from their e-store website and thus it is hosted at Shopify server. -- Bbarmadillo (talk) 14:40, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi Bbarmadillo,
This is on the English Wikipedia, not on Wikimedia Commons, where fair use is not allowed. Regards, Yann (talk) 14:59, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
Yann where can I raise the request to review this image? -- Bbarmadillo (talk) 16:38, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
I made a couple of edits there ("Replaceability = any accurate reflection of the logo would have the same image", "Author = presumably DiCamillo Bakery"). I think it should be fine, I don't think it needs any more review on en-wiki than any other non-free logo. I would greatly appreciate help with choosing the correct license for this image that I have just uploaded. I believe that it is PD because it was gifted to the Libaray of Congress by Harris & Ewing, but I am unable to figure out which license I should use. Hi P999,
{{PD-Harris-Ewing}} is OK. There are twice the {{Information}} templates, they should be merged. Regards, Yann (talk) 15:04, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

I need an administrator to help me with to "veto" the RFR for Kai3952

I was recently in trouble for RFR. User:Dan Koehl has been forcing me to accept the "Autopatrol". I need an administrator to help me with to "veto" the RFR for Kai3952. I'm asking an Administrator to help me with this. I do NOT want to have the permission of autopatrol to edit Wikimedia Commons.--Kai3952 (talk) 10:38, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

After viewing User_talk:Dan_Koehl, I think User:Kai3952 might not at all understand what autopatrol means. --Túrelio (talk) 10:46, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952, what is your problem with Autopatrol-status? Reading Commons:Patrol#Autopatrol might help. --Túrelio (talk) 10:46, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
@Túrelio: I don't care about these! I only know that I do NOT want to have the permission of autopatrol to edit Wikimedia Commons. Unless you do not want to respect me. Do you want me to leave Wikimedia Commons?--Kai3952 (talk) 11:01, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
It makes sense that if a user doesn't want a status that they shouldn't be forced to be given it. Most admins would never give Autopatrol to a user unless this is requested and circumventing the RFR process could be a against policies. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 11:14, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: You look at what he said, he think I misunderstood it; on the contrary, I think he misunderstood what I said, and I am just simply said, "I don't want to use the permission of autopatrol." I do no disagree with the policy of Patrol, but that does not mean that I should accept "Autopatrol(means the RFR for Kai3952)." The reason I feel angry is that User:Dan Koehl doesn't respect me. He uses his thoughts to force me to accept.--Kai3952 (talk) 12:27, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
Kai3952: You are not in any trouble. Dan Koehl is suggesting that you should be more trusted than what you currently are. By default, all edits by regular users have to be manually reviewed before they are marked as trusted (or patrolled). This is currently the case with your edits. Dan is suggesting that your edits should automatically be marked as trusted.
Your editing is not affected in any way. You do not need to apply for this extra level of trust, because Dan has already done that for you. I suppose you could turn it down, but I don't see why you would want to. LX (talk, contribs) 15:46, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
@LX: His behavior is not the "suggestion". I have communicated with him, but he still insisted that I should accept "Autopatrol." I think he is forcing me to accept it. I don't understand why I can't choose to maintain the status quo. Can anyone tell me why? Once my choice has been confirmed by User:Dan Koehl, where is my freedom?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:48, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
Because the status quo forces other people to patrol your edits. It makes more work for other people. You don't have the freedom to force other people to do more work than they need to.--Prosfilaes (talk) 18:05, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
@Prosfilaes: This is not my problem, because you can choose not to patrol my edits; but then, I don't understand why you say "force"? If you think so then you can find an admin to help you.--Kai3952 (talk) 13:04, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
If it's not your problem whether or not we set the bits marking your edits as patrolled, it's not your problem whether or not we set the bit marking your edits as autopatrolled.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:11, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
Maybe @Kai3952: does not quite know what autopatrolled means: the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy Lotje (talk) 06:56, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
@Prosfilaes: I cannot understand why you insisted that I do this, but I clearly know that I have the right not to accept "Autopatrol." If you want to patrol my edits, I will not stop you, but you can NOT force give me the autopatrol user right. That's what I mean by "I do not want to have the permission of autopatrol".--Kai3952 (talk) 22:06, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
You have the right to not accept autopatrol, true. Since no one asked you if you want to accept, how is that relevant? If you're claiming that you have the right not to be marked as autopatrolled, you're going to have to back that up. We can force you to have the autopatrol user "right", just like we can force you to have the blocked user "right".--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:36, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
You said that, "We can force you to have the autopatrol user "right", just like we can force you to have the blocked user "right"". What do you want to say?--Kai3952 (talk) 08:31, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
We can force you to have the autopatrol user "right", just like we can force you to have the blocked user "right". Which, happily enough, is what I wrote. "Autopatrol" is not an alienable right; if people who can set it don't think you need to be patrolled, they can set it and you don't have the right to deny it.--Prosfilaes (talk) 17:40, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
I don't think so. The purpose of COM:RFR settings is to give people a discussion on whether or not to give "Autopatrol". Therefore, I think I have the right to decide if I accept it for the autopatrol user right at special:diff/282158804.--Kai3952 (talk) 21:32, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
@Lotje: No, I quite know what what autopatrolled means, but I do not want to possess the autopatrol user right.--Kai3952 (talk) 22:29, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Category merger

An enthusiastic editor has suddenly without basis in fact merged two categories. This is an editor with hundreds of thousands of edits. I have left a message on his talk page and reverted this edit. They were all done at the same time (00:23, 2 February 2018), so listing his contributions, I quickly rolled back each one. A good way to avoid this sort of thing (and help users to categorise files correctly) is to put an explanation of the distinction between the categories in each category page. --bjh21 (talk) 16:27, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

Help needed uploading large file

Freeport map as TIFF

I need some help uploading a large file. My own internet connection is not currently fast/stable enough to make this practical.

File info/viewing is at https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3804f.pm005650/. Going from source on that page, the file itself is presumably https://cdn.loc.gov/master/gmd/gmd380/g3804/g3804f/pm005650.tif. It would also be nice to generate a corresponding JPEG & upload that.

The image is a 1909 map of Freeport, New York with images of some prominent buildings at the bottom. It should be {{PD-US}}, given the publication date of 1909. - Jmabel ! talk 16:47, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

I'll have a go. More fun than working on my bot... --bjh21 (talk) 16:55, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
Well, that wasn't very successful. The TIFF file is invalid, which means that uploading it by URL as-is generates an error:
The uploaded file contains errors: tiffinfo command failed: '/usr/bin/tiffinfo' '/tmp/URL0119a993525e.urlupload_' 2>&1
I can fix it if I download it myself, but then it's too big to upload. I have at least managed to upload a full-resolution JPEG version: File:Aero view of Freeport, Long Island, N.Y. 1909.jpeg. Maybe someone else can work out how to upload the TIFF. --bjh21 (talk) 17:21, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
PS: the actual error tiffinfo gives is:
TIFFFetchDirectory: Sanity check on directory count failed, this is probably not a valid IFD offset.
TIFFReadDirectory: Failed to read directory at offset 524296.

I can't get it to work either. Anybody else? —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:18, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
I downloaded it successfully and resaved it with the GIMP (losslessly compressed to ~180 MB); will shortly be attempting to upload with the same name as the above JPEG (except the extension, of course).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:50, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
THANKS! The JPEG will do beautifully. - Jmabel ! talk
(Edit conflict) ✓ Done@Jmabel: please check the description & cats. The upload took some doing: I had assumed the ‘expert‘ form would be the best at handling a large file, but it hung, showing a wait-spinner beside the proposed filename while my browser status bar said “Contacting commons.wikimedia.org“. After half an hour of that, I killed it and tried again with the Upload Wizard, which (to my surprise) worked just fine.
BTW the GIMP reported numerous errors while parsing the file (flashing past too fast to read), then gave me a choice of two pages to open. Not sure what all that‘s about (embedded preview?) but it reminded me of a couple of occasions when I’d saved what I thought were perfectly normal TIFFs with Photoshop, but they showed two pages on being uploaded here. That’s why I used the GIMP in the first place … when I opened the original file in Photoshop it reported no problems aside from the lack of a colour profile, so the errors might be due to some kind of ‘private‘ or non-standard data belonging to that program.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:55, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Is there a template for merged text?

I merged the gallery at en:Armenian genocide into Armenian Genocide. Is there a template similar to en:Template:Merged-from to put on the talk page and comply with the attribution requirement in CC BY-SA 3.0? Billhpike (talk) 22:28, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Global replace

As a filemover, I'm used to seeing the "move & replace" tab which brings up a special window for moving files and triggers the global replacement after a file been moved. I recently installed this drop-down menu as a gadget on my global.js page (I like the one-click options for page logs and user contributions). However, this moves the traditional move tab into the menu, and the "move and replace" option is now gone and instead has a "Move page" link. Clicking on the move link leads to Special:MovePage instead of bringing up the move & replace window. (I assume it also doesn't do the global replace, but I haven't moved anything since then.) Is there a way to recover the "move & replace" option instead of the simple move option? kennethaw88talk 02:45, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

I think you must decide what is more important for you. On the page you link I read in a foot note “This replaces the link in the "cactions" portlet by default. If itabs is disabled, then this link will not appear.” itabs is used for several features, so you would deactivate not only the move page replacement. You could try to explicitly load MediaWiki:AjaxQuickDelete.js in your common.js (which is loaded after global.js):
deleted
but the script has a lot of dependencies – it does not work proper or not at all if these aren’t loaded.
Edit: Perhaps this works:
mw.loader.using( ['mediawiki.util' , 'mediawiki.user' , 'jquery.ui.dialog' , 'ext.gadget.libCommons' , 'ext.gadget.libJQuery' , 'ext.gadget.libUtil' , 'mediawiki.RegExp' ] ).then( function () {
	mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:AjaxQuickDelete.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');
} );
BTW the description, how to configure the menu script, on the linked documentation page in English Wikipedia is terribly outdated. It would be nice if someone pointed this out there. importScriptURI is deprecated if not obsolete, and the script under en:User:Haza-w/cactions.js produces only a log warning. Apparently, the feature is available as gadget, but this should be clearly pointed out on doc page.
— Speravir – 03:25, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
It turned out I did have to choose, so I just disabled it for file pages. Thanks for trying to help. And I guess I should have pointed out that I am using the current gadget. kennethaw88talk 04:37, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

I am the principal of a high school and have been trying to attach the school's logo to the wikipedia page but it keeps being deleted and now says that I can't post it. What do I have to do to post the school's logo?

Thank you,

Mr. Chris Barrows Principal Aquinas High School — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cbarrowsaquinas (talk • contribs) 07:04, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

  • I assume this is about File:AAquinasHSLogo NavyPMS296 wBlend&Shadow 7 2011.jpg.
  • Do you have two separate accounts? I see that both User:Cbarrows (cross-loading from the English language Wikipedia) and the account you are signing with (working directly on Commons) have tried to upload to that filename, which is an unusual enough filename to be unlikely to be used by two different people.
  • I see that you uploaded it with a claim of "own work" and with license {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}}, both of which amount to a claim that you personally designed the logo and hold the copyright. (One way that might legitimately be the case is if the "official" logo is merely a heraldic blazon, and you personally rendered the blazon.) If that is actually the case, then you can skip to my last bullet point.
  • If you personally are not the actual author, then the correct author should be credited.
  • If the logo was first published before 1978, without copyright notice, then under U.S. law it is in the public domain, and the correct permission would be {{PD-US-no notice}}.
  • Otherwise, under the Berne Convention, copyright of the logo belongs to the designer, unless that copyright was conveyed in writing to another entity (presumably the school itself). If the designer never signed over copyright, then only the designer can grant a license. If the copyright has been conveyed to the school, then of course you as the principal can authorize a license on the school's behalf.
  • In any case, you will need to follow the procedure at COM:OTRS to send an email either indicating that the logo is in the public domain or to provide a license for this image that has already been published elsewhere, preferably using an email address clearly attached to the school. Of course, if some other individual (the artist) still owns the copyright, then we need email from that person. - Jmabel ! talk 07:58, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

Is it allowed to upload scans of textile patterns/samples to Wikipedia Commons? I own a book from 1956 from Ernst Hecht „Welches Gewebe ist das“ (german - Which textile is this) Enclosed to the book are about 20 tables with textile samples glued on them. I scanned them for personal use; at 600dpi structure is so much better visible. Shall I upload them to Wikipedia? There is no obvious outstanding design on the samples. They more stand for weaving technique and structure of the textile.

  • They certainly won't qualify for Wikipedia's non-free use; the languages that allow that pretty much all do it on the basis of lowest useful resolution, and only for images that are important to particular articles.
  • I don't know what the copyright status of these would be. All or some might be public domain, because they might not be eligible for copyright. I'd suggest taking this question to Commons:Village pump/Copyright (please copy over the discussion so far & note here that it has been moved), where someone with the relevant expertise is more likely to weigh in. - Jmabel ! talk 17:04, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

May I upload a new version of my school's sign?

That depends on the shape and license of the logo, generally logo's are discouraged on Wikimedia Commons as most are copyrighted (unless they're ineligible), but if the license is "fair use" you should upload it to Wikipedia and not Wikimedia Commons, although if you're from German Wikipedia I can't say with certainty if that's possible there. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 00:02, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

Providing proof of authorisation to use pictures for Beerenberg Farm

Hi

I have been in the process of appealing a deletion of some photographs I uploaded to Beerenberg Farm to Wiki Commons. Some of the talk about the deletions has now been removed. The most recent contribution to the page suggested that I got authorisation from Beerenberg to use the photographs. The pictures were either taken by a third party a for the company as marketing material or conversations from family slides. I now have letter from the Managing Director and Company Owner authorising me to upload the photographs - it was at his request I did it in the first place. How do I go about submitting that letter for consideration?

thanks Shauna — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shaunawatt (talk • contribs) 21:58, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

Under the Category:Grand Wash Cliffs my name is---- my name User_talk:Mmcannis. and under some other categories, for example Category:Hurricane Cliffs, it is User_talk:Mmcannis~commonswiki. Hello, I've included in the description the source of the image and the fact that I have received permission from the Wisconsin Historical Society. I can forward someone the email I received from their archivist if necessary. I'm not exactly sure how to properly attribute the image other than putting in the description the information that they asked me to. Please let me know how I can fix this properly!

--Gbouck (talk) 20:41, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

  • Is this 1877 image even copyrighted? If so, how do the Wisconsin Historical Society come to hold the copyright? If it's not copyrighted, then it just needs a {{PD-US}} tag. If it is, and if Wisconsin Historical Society holds the copyright, what license precisely are they granting? See COM:OTRS for how they can explicitly provide a license. - Jmabel ! talk 23:13, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
The source page says 1895, photographer unknown. So if unpublished its copyright would have expired in 2016. But if it was first published since 1923 (with any necessary notices and renewals) it would get 95 years from that date.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 08:56, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Thank you both for your help. This should certainly be public domain. I have updated the photo info to reflect that it is now public domain, and I updated the publishing date to 1895 to reflect the information on the source site. I think everything should be good now? Thank you! Gbouck (talk) 16:25, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Cannot upload a file via MediaWiki UploadWizard

Hi All,

I've tried to upload a file to Wiki Commons using the MediaWiki UploadWizard I've just installed but any upload stalls. I'm trying to upload a 15kb file size but hangs - no errors and the progress bar time keeps on climbing.

Below is the environment I'm trying on with versions:

Upload Wizard 1.5.0 GPL-2.0+

Product Version MediaWiki 1.26.0 PHP 5.5.9-1ubuntu4.17 (apache2handler) MySQL 5.5.46-0ubuntu0.14.04.2 ICU 52.1

Renaming an image from Google Art Project

(Moved here from Commons talk:Help desk. — Speravir – 17:56, 10 February 2018 (UTC))

I have been advised by administrator FunkMonk to seek a broader discussion on 'Commons talk:Help desk' about renaming an image uploaded by a bot from Google Arts & Culture:

https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/beta/asset/0wHXmZUn2XzTVg

..and this is the file here on Commons

c:File:Friedrich Overbeck - Joseph wird von seinen Brüdern verkauft (Casa Bartholdy in Rom) - Google Art Project.jpg

The renaming requests have been declined twice (1) by User:Richardkiwi and 2) by User:Marcus Cyron), so I would ask more users and administrators to look deeper into the matter, as overruling Google seems difficult. What you have to do is to look at the images. I admit it takes a bit longer.
To help you, the situation is also described on the talk page:

c:File talk:Friedrich Overbeck - Joseph wird von seinen Brüdern verkauft (Casa Bartholdy in Rom) - Google Art Project.jpg

In spite of what can be read on Google Arts & Culture, the artist is not Friedrich Overbeck but Philipp Veit, and the title is not Joseph wird von seinen Brüdern verkauft ('The Selling of Joseph'), but Die sieben fetten Jahre ('The Seven Fat Years')

The image is part of 'The History of Joseph', a series of frescos in Berlin: "Die Fresken der Casa Bartholdy", 1816/1817 (c:Category:Casa Bartholdy frescos) presented by Nationalgalerie der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz here:

http://www.smb-digital.de/eMuseumPlus?service=ExternalInterface&module=collection&objectId=959770&viewType=detailView

(Google translates from German: 'The following wall pictures belong to the cycle (in the sequence of the action, see there)')
"... Zu dem Zyklus gehören die folgenden Wandbilder (in der Reihenfolge des Handlungsablaufs, siehe dort):

1. Friedrich Overbeck, »Joseph wird von seinen Brüdern verkauft«, 1817 <<<< This is another fresco File:Friedrich Overbeck 002.jpg
2. Wilhelm Schadow, »Jakobs Klage«, 1816/17
3. Philipp Veit, »Joseph und Potiphars Weib«, 1816
4. Wilhelm Schadow, »Joseph im Gefängnis«, 1817
5. Peter Cornelius, »Joseph deutet die Träume des Pharao«, 1816/17
6. Philipp Veit, »Die sieben fetten Jahre«, Lünettenbild, 1817 <<<< Correct artist an title for the image in discussion
7. Friedrich Overbeck, »Die sieben mageren Jahre«, Lünettenbild, 1816
8. Peter Cornelius, »Joseph gibt sich seinen Brüdern zu erkennen«, 1816/17

..."

Furthermore kunstgeschichte.uni-muenchen.de has this page:

http://www.projekte.kunstgeschichte.uni-muenchen.de/dt_frz_malerei/41-dt-franz-malerei/studieneinheiten/1815_1830_d/4b/gruppe_4/b.htm

.. where by hoovering over the images one can read artist and title of the frescos.

This page

http://www.projekte.kunstgeschichte.uni-muenchen.de/dt_frz_malerei/41-dt-franz-malerei/bilder/1815_1830_d/4a/b_popup_bart_fett.htm

.. reads:

Philipp Veit
Die sieben fetten Jahre, 1817s
Fresko, 150 x 480 cm
Berlin, Nationalgalerie

Here on Commons another image from Category:Casa Bartholdy frescos has got it right: File:Philipp Veit 001.jpg
'The Selling og Joseph' is also already on Commons as File:Friedrich Overbeck 002.jpg
The easy part is to repeat to decline renaming, the difficult part is apparently to recognise a mistake made by Google. I admit it is not a ten-second-job.
So my request here is: could more users and administrators please discuss the situation. I hope you end up agreeing that the image should be renamed to a "more suitable name" and the mistake thereby be corrected.
(The discussion on Danish Wikipedia can be found here: da:Brugerdiskussion:Brams#The_Selling_of_Joseph)
-- PHansen (talk) 09:43, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

OK, once more...: the really important place for correcting things is not the title. At the end you can give everything every title - it doesn't matter. The really important place to correct things is the description. Also of importance are the category. You always just try to change the unimportant file name. It would be stupid to rename against the discription. But as long you seem to think, that it's not necessary to change the description and the categories (I don't know about the problem, so I will not do it), why we should rename the file? You write here this long text, but you are unwilling to do it on the file's page. I don't understand such a behaviour. Marcus Cyron (talk) 09:57, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
First @FunkMonk: Commons talk:Help desk is for discussion about Commons:Help desk. I moved it therefore here.
Second, I agree with Marcus with one exception, but I guess he just was a bit unclear about this: “At the end you can give everything every title - it doesn't matter.” is not fully right, because according to Commons:File renaming the title has to decribe the topic.
Meanwhile another Danish user, Villy Fink Isaksen, made the necessary changes for the file in its description and I did the renaming. — Speravir – 17:56, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

, can you help? I think you are doing this frequently. — Speravir – 00:11, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
Most were uploaded previously and were either put somewhere in Images released by British Library Images Online or Images from the British Library Mechanical Curator collection. Others Artix Kreiger has already done with F2C, such as Christmas Carol Leaflets. If in doubt, a search for the FlickrID will find matches or prove it's not here.
Those that were missed by previous passes have now been uploaded using my custom User:Fæ/Flickr API detail upload method and placed in the bucket category Christmas and Winter Scenes from the British Library Mechanical Curator collection.
@Artix Kreiger: In the Leaflets example above, the description field is not displaying correctly due to odd characters in the description. I expect the same will be true of your other F2C uploads in this set.

Uploading online public domain photos of paintings

I would appreciate help as a beginner. I want to upload, to Wikimedia, online auction photos of paintings of an artist who died in 1875. And then transfer them to a Wikipedia article, on the artist, that I have created. BFP1BFP1 (talk) 12:21, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

@BFP1: Do you have an example?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:27, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
  • In general, if the artist died in 1875 this should be no problem. A photograph or scan of a 2-D work creates no new copyright. In some cases you might have to crop out a frame, because a frame is 3-D so a photograph of a frame is considered creative. The right license tag would be {{PD-old-auto-1923|1875}}.
  • Once uploaded, you would use them in Wikipedia exactly like any other photo. - Jmabel ! talk 16:55, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Image preview

There is a way of, before uploading an image to the Commons, to see a preview? This is useful for SVG diagrams, who don't have allways exactly the same image in our personal computer and in the Commons (for example, I had to make 6 or 7 uploads of this diagram - and "polluting" the history with garbage - until it becomes equal to what I wanted).--MiguelMadeira (talk) 22:38, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Most of the time I upload JPG files the preview is squished to about 1/4 the true height.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 23:42, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

How to import batches from URL with either Commonist or the VicuñaUploader?

I was advised to use the VicuñaUploader to upload a batch of images from a website, so today I had borrowed a friend's laptop 💻 to try and upload around 300 images from Art-Hanoi to Wikimedia Commons, when using Commonist I could only select local files 📁, so I downloaded the VicuñaUploader on their computer and found that I can also only upload local files, so how can I use a programme to transfer a batch of images from a website to Wikimedia Commons? And what tools can I use? --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 12:21, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

These tools don't, so you need to do something like wget or curl to download locally first. For "small" uploads, such as under 1,000 images, this is the way to go, unless you copy the images to Flickr and use Flickr2Commons. This is a very practical recommendation for GLAMs because getting titles right on Flickr before upload is very visual.
To upload from a URL directly, the site must be whitelisted, see mw:Help:Extension:GWToolset#Domain_Whitelist. This is probably only worth doing for large uploads, probably more than 5,000 files and where the source site is likely to be repeatedly used to upload from, due to the volunteer time involved in requesting a whitelisting (which itself normally takes over a calendar week) and so on. The GWToolset is strongly recommended for very large projects such as 10,000 or more files, but it does require creating a source XML file to drive the upload and will take several days to learn from scratch, unless you are starting from a strong technical base. -- (talk) 12:28, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

Photos from the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Does anyone know the use policy of photos posted on the website of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), particularly the exhibition photos that the post? I'm new to this but the Met's website is the only place I can find usable photos of a certain object.--Johnsemlak (talk) 00:14, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

@Johnsemlak: Their website is "© 2000–2018 The Metropolitan Museum of Art. All rights reserved." However, for instances where the underlying 2D artwork is PD and the photo or scan is a faithful reproduction of it, we have {{PD-Art}}.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 04:30, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
^^^Assuming, of course, that the underlying artwork is public domain.
Also, you say "object". If it's something 3-D, you are out of luck on this particular solution, because a photo of even a public-domain 3-D object is copyrightable (inevitably, creativity in how you photograph it). - Jmabel ! talk 04:51, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

  • Discussion belongs at Commons:Deletion requests/File:WwikiMariaSuhashini.jpg, etc. and I see you've already responded there. If you are the photographer, clarify that there (and on the respective pages for the other images), but if you are the photographer, why such low-resolution scans? If you hold the copyright on some other basis, you'll need to clarify the basis. In any case, you should probably read COM:OTRS: that explains how you can make a statement that you are the copyright-holder and are releasing rights, in a context where you can clarify exactly who you are without making that public. - Jmabel ! talk 21:09, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

Transferring watchlist entries

Is there a way to do that? Artix Kreiger (talk) 19:48, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

  • If I understand you correctly, no, one account cannot share its watchlist with another, but if you want to do something else, please explain more specifically. - Jmabel ! talk 20:56, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
It seems you can do it indirectly, by copying from one account’s Special:EditWatchlist/raw page to a text or e-mail file, from which entries could then be pasted into the corresponding form for another account. I’ve never tried it before, so I have no idea whether or not the added entries need to be merge/sorted (alphabetically & by namespace) into the new list or the system will do that automatically.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:42, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

Using a photo of a person that is already in common use on the internet

There are a couple of images of a moderately well-known person in common, uncopyrighted use and circulation on the Internet. I would like to add them to the article that already exists on that person. The photos appear to already be in the 'commons'. Can I upload them to Wikimedia, and how do I handle the copyright issue. It asks me to ensure that I am the copyright owner. I don't want to speciously claim copyright on something that is already in the common domain. — Preceding unsigned comment added by StuartGaia (talk • contribs)

  • What do you mean by "uncopyrighted use"? Are you saying that the image is demonstrably in the public domain? And what do you mean by "in the 'commons'"? If (as I suspect) you are just saying "lots of people have used it on a fair use basis" or "lots of people have violated someone's copyright", neither of those makes it eligible to be on Wikimedia Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 00:26, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
  • Do you know who the original photographer is? Can you verify that they have released their work under a free license? If not, no. How widely reused a photo is on the internet has nothing to do with its copyright status. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 01:34, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Hello, I am having trouble uploading a company logo. I'm following the Logo guide and the Copyright tags guide but I am stuck at the 'Release rights' page. After indicating the author and the source, am I correct in stating that I have to insert a copyright tag in the "Another reason not mentioned above" section? If so, then I cannot figure out the correct copyright tag, as the page will not let me advance to "Describe". Could you please assist me? Thank you so much. What logo do you want to upload? Ruslik (talk) 19:54, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

I want to upload the correct logo for this brand, right now the image displays the (old) logo on the product, rather than having the logo itself. Fmchibcfiunem (talk) 10:32, 15 February 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fmchibcfiunem (talk • contribs) 06:39, 15 February 2018‎ (UTC)

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 06:56, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
@Fmchibcfiunem: I don't see a decent sized logo on http://www.birraichnusa.it/, nor do I see a free license, so we would need OTRS permission, or you could upload it under Fair Use to projects listed at m:NFC.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 06:56, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thank you for your help! We'll see what we can do from here then. I've gone back and signed my previous posts, sorry for that as well. Fmchibcfiunem (talk) 10:32, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Partow Nooriala

My name is Partow Nooriala, an Iranian female writer and poet. I have received some emails from Wikipedia regarding my page that is not completed. Also they need a permission to work on the page and release it. I was asked for a picture, that I sent to the address was provided.

Unfortunately I don't know how to work with Wikipedia, I only can give you my permission to create a page for me. I can send you my complete bio, name of the books etc... My email address is: partownooriala@sbcglobal.net

Thank you in advance, Partow Nooriala — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:e000:6296:f700:1972:fc28:a087:6e28 (talk • contribs)

  • This is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. We do not have articles at all on Commons, although among other things we are the media repository for Wikipedia and other WMF sites, and the most appropriate place to upload pictures for use in Wikipedia.
  • There is no English-language Wikipedia page about you. As far as I can tell, there is no Wikipedia page about you in any language, but since I don't know how to write your name in Farsi, I cannot determine whether there might be one in the Farsi Wikipedia.
  • Wikipedia would not write to you about a page not being completed. Perhaps some individual working on a page did so, but also possibly this could be some sort of scammer or someone trying to get you to pay them to create a page (which is ethically a bit dubious, but not outright banned).
  • I don't know what address was "provided"; of course, no one would need permission to write about you if you are notable enough to merit an encyclopedia article.
  • If you do want to submit photos, keep in mind that the copyright of a photo is normally owned by the photographer, not the subject, so unless the picture is a self-portrait we would need a license from the photographer or someone who has otherwise legally obtained the copyright, not from the subject of the photo.

Overwriting an existing map

I've tried to overwrite this map with an updated version [1], but somehow its newly updated version (version as of 07:58, 19 February 2018 (UTC)) hasn't shown up. This is the updated version [2] with the word 'Yi' added which I've wanted it to be shown up, and this is the older version of the map [3] with the word 'Yi' missing which I've wanted it to be replaced. Looking at the file history [4], you will see that the version uploaded at 07:58, 19 February 2018 has shown up as I've expected. However, after the moment when the map had been uploaded at 07:58, 19 February 2018, it did not show up in that way. Then, I reverted the map to its previous version uploaded at 13:03, 11 April 2017. As soon as I'd reverted it, the version uploaded at 07:58, 19 February 2018 showed up as I expected it to be. Therefore, I reverted back to the 07:58, 19 February 2018 version at 08:05, 19 February 2018. But the map hasn't yet shown up in the way I've wanted. How can I fix this? Thanks. Why File:Tunyuan Trailhead.jpg be submitted to COM:DR because there is No FOP for artistic works in Taiwan?

Some users think that the entrance sign is a artwork. For example: File:Tunyuan Trailhead.jpg. The problem is this photo not only photographed the framed wood paneling shows hikers / climbers ascending a snow-covered mountain, the historical trail and its name all shows in the photo. I think this photo is intended to express: we see that the historical trail is called "能高越嶺國家步道". If File:Tunyuan Trailhead.jpg should be deleted in this case, many photos in Taiwan which has elements of art, will these not be deleted either?--Kai3952 (talk) 08:22, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Some users think that the entrance sign is artwork because it is artwork. Yes, we should delete all photos we can not legally keep.--Prosfilaes (talk) 10:06, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: If you feel the image is still worth having without the sign, you could use GIMP or a similar tool to create a version with a strong Gaussian blur over the sign. - Jmabel ! talk 15:54, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
I don't understand why I want to do this?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:05, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
Then don't do it. The only reason would be if you care about keeping the photo in a form that doesn't violate copyright, but if you are just as willing to have it deleted outright, that's fine, I don't see it as a particularly useful image. - Jmabel ! talk 01:52, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
Do you mean to say that there should be better photos to replace File:Tunyuan Trailhead.jpg, in which the word "better" means we don't violate copyright and to comply with the Commons policy?--Kai3952 (talk) 06:41, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
No, I mean File:Tunyuan Trailhead.jpg as it is should be deleted as a copyright violation because there is no FOP for artwork in Taiwan, but if you want to save something like it (I personally don't care whether it is saved or not), and you believe the photo would still be useful without the portion of it that violates a copyright, then the way to do it is to create a version with the artwork in question covered by a Gaussian blur, upload that as a new version, and then only the version that violates copyright need be deleted. If you, like me, don't care whether this file is saved or not, then do nothing. I don't care whether we get a "better photo" of this subject or not; you raised the question of this photo, so I was guessing you cared about saving it. I was telling you how to do that, if you care to do that. Again, if you don't care to do that, fine, I have no skin in this matter. - Jmabel ! talk 17:15, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

How do I go about: Adding category, Saving SandBox and inserting pictures?

Hi,

I would like to add a new category called BathQuilt.

How do I go about: Adding category, Saving SandBox and inserting pictures? ................................................................................................................................. This is what I wanted to save in the sandbox so far until I am able to do more editing:

BathQuilt From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about the BathQuilt (Bath Quilt) brand. For the generic reference, see Bathing, Hydrotherapy.

Product type Bath Tub Covering Owner Intertwined Innovations, LLC Country United States Introduced 2013 Markets Worldwide

Registered trademark in USA Website www.BathQuilts.com BathQuilt is a new class and category of product, and parent brand name for a variety of bath covers with different trade names such as TranQuiltity pertaining to specific market segments like: Home Spa, Cancer, Seniors, Children, Integrative Health, etc. Contents [hide] 1 History 2 BathQuilt Trademark 3 See also 4 References 5 External links

History[edit source] A bath is the oldest known therapy! Baths have also have long history for cleaning, religion & pleasure. (see "Bathing" and "Hydrotherapy" in Wikipedia)

Anyone who has tried to take a long hot bath has discovered a problem. The water gets cold and so does their exposed wet knees and shoulders. While a deep Jacuzzi helps with that, still 98% of homes only have a bath tub and not a Jacuzzi type of tub. People have tried to keep hot long with a towel, but that gets heavy, clingy and gets mildew. They have also tried plastic & foam but that feels cold and industrial against the skin. 100's of materials have been tested without success as there are so many performance criteria to satisfy.

In 2013, testing and designing began on a 3-ply high tech nonwoven composite capable of floating and staying light and non clingy even when wet, resisting mildew, and feeling quilty soft to the bather touch.

Cancer patients began reporting that they were using the BathQuilt so the bath was more effective in restoring their core body temperature from chemo treatment. Women began reporting that their bathing experience became a Home Spa luxury. Doctors said the BathQuilt enhanced the therapeutic values of a bath. Children could play in the tub longer. This is becoming the new way to take a bath.

In the USA, the BathQuilt name has become—in common usage but not in law—genericized References[edit source] Jump up ^ "BizTalk" WHBY radio June 3 2017 - Introduced a nog to keep bath water and bathers hot longer ^ "Million Cups" broadcast nationally. • In my judgment, it is unlikely that this article will be accepted by Wikipedia, but you can try.
  • There was certainly no reason to replicate it all here.
  • You don't save a sandbox as such (if it was truly a sandbox). A sandbox is just a space for playing with wikisyntax, etc. See Wikipedia:Drafts for how to write a draft article.
  • If you are talking about adding categories on Wikipedia, not here in Commons, I suggest you either ask on Wikipedia or see Wikipedia:Categorization.
  • To learn more about adding photos to an article, see Wikipedia:Uploading images and Help:Pictures. - Jmabel ! talk 05:48, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

Unable to upload files

When I'm uploading my own images to Wikipedia it always say:"Something Went Wrong". I've tried uploading on multiple computers but it doesn't seems to work. I don't know if its the picture's problem because I transferred them onto Google Photos then download them onto my computer. The reason I'm doing that is because I have a hard time transferring my Canon's pictures on my MacBook. --Kevauto (talk) 20:26, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

  • Does this also happen when you try to upload here on Commons? Because if the problem is just with Wikipedia, then this is probably not the place to ask. If you are talking about Commons, then please be more specific about what upload tool you are using (Upload Wizard? Something else?) and about what steps you take before it gives the message "Something Went Wrong". - Jmabel ! talk 01:55, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
I have the same problem, I can't upload with Commons (and even with Wiki). The image is a normal photo taken by a camera, as the others I've already uplodaded on Commons/Wiki in the past. I'm following the normal steps to upload a photo as I have always done. --Moxmarco (talk) 18:06, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

I don't know whats is "upload wizard". --Moxmarco (talk) 09:06, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
Moxmarco: The Upload Wizard is the default upload tool here on Wikimedia Commons. It is one of many alternatives that also include Commons:Upload and the cross-wiki upload form that's part of the Visual Editor on other Wikimedia projects. Looking at your log, you've been using the cross-wiki upload form on the Italian Wikipedia project, and looking at Kevauto's log, Kevauto was using the cross-wiki upload form on the English Wikipedia project, but appears to have been using the Upload Wizard since last commenting above. Setting event-handler attributes only_selected="false" is not allowed in SVG files.

I am getting the following error when trying to upload a SVG file:

Setting event-handler attributes only_selected="false" is not allowed in SVG files.

What does this mean? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Keministi (talk • contribs) 23:33, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

Perhelion, do you have a clue? Sounds like the user wanted to upload a SVG with illegal attributes in it. It seems the error message is a special Mediawiki thing, searching for this I got exactly one older result: an archived question from Commons: Help desk, asked by John9474. — Speravir – 01:48, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
@Keministi and Speravir: Yes, function code (JS) is not allowed on MediaWiki. -- User: Perhelion 19:31, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
PS: @Keministi: which SVG tool you use? You should search and delete the relevant code and retry it. -- User: Perhelion 19:43, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
@Perhelion: Inkscape 0.92.2. I can open the SVG file with a text editor and apparently it uses XML syntax (I'm not too familiar with SVG files). I removed all the only_selected="false" /> -lines and the file got broken. Then tried to replace all the original lines with only_selected="true" />, the file worked, but I couldn't upload the file to wikimedia. I got the error Setting event-handler attributes only_selected="true" is not allowed in SVG files.". Suggestions? Keministi (talk) 17:15, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Yes, SVG is XML based, see also en:Scalable Vector Graphics. Can you give a link to this SVG file? Perhaps you have deleted too much or have to delete more. Changing the value of an illegal attribute does obviously not help – the (Javascript) attribute will still be illegal. — Speravir – 18:22, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
If you use Inkscape, try this: click File on the top bar, click Save as and change the file type to regular SVG (instead of Iknscape SVG). Then try to upload the file.--Estonian1885 (talk) 19:09, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Should these quotes in title be fixed?

In Category:"Two Working Men" by Oisin Kelly I was following the model of Category:“The Echo Boy” by Barry Moloney, Cork. However, this seems incorrect. What is the best way of doing this on the Commons? Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 20:16, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

I think that category names should not include quote marks. Ruslik (talk) 19:07, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

Casson Trenor: tricky categorization question

Some time back, User:Mindmatrix (entirely reasonably) decided that a photo of Casson Trenor doesn't directly belong in Category:Sushi. Trenor is a restaurateur and an activist on sustainable sushi but he's not really a sushi chef (so doesn't belong in Category:Sushi chefs. His activism on sustainable sushi is enough that it seems like the connection should somehow be drawn, but I'm not sure how.

This came up because I'm creating Category:Casson Trenor. - Jmabel ! talk 23:23, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

I've created Category:Sustainable sushi and added him to that category. I've also added intermediary categories (Category:Sustainable seafood, Category:Sustainable fisheries) and lightly populated them; a cursory search indicates there are quite a few more articles that can be filed in these categories. The category tree probably needs some fleshing out, but it's a start. Mindmatrix 01:23, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
BTW: this solution probably suffers from a similar problem as before (he is not sustainable sushi, after all), but it's slightly better. At some point, we'll need a subcategory for advocates and proponents, or perhaps a 'people involved with' (or similar) subcat. Mindmatrix 01:50, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
Good solution. Not every category is an is-a relationship. - Jmabel ! talk 06:05, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

ArchiverBot - Media of the Day

I was directed to this page from the user page of ArchiverBot. The Bot archived an entry of a proposal for the media of the day. On the proposal page it says entries are archived after 50 days, but the bot archived after 30 days. I made the proposal to use a video of a protest in support of Deniz Yücel and I made this proposal timely, so that it can be discussed. Now it has been instead removed early and before the proposed time: the day 365 days after he was imprisoned. The video could also have been chosen on the day 365 days after he was initially arrested, or on the day he was finally released. But still the originally proposed day is still in the future and there still is reason to show the video. I don't think a bot should make such a decission. --C.Suthorn (talk) 11:30, 23 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi, a.o. I've uploaded the file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Spectral_leakage_of_a_rectangular_window.svg to WikiMedia (my first contribution) but I'm unsure how to put the image on the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectral_leakage. I've created a python script (currently, there is a Matlab script) for generating this and related plots that I'm also willing to share but I don't know how. Help for a newbie would be appreciated! "Add a note" button

I find that often when I access a file page, it stays in "loading" mode more or less indefinitely, and never shows the "Add a note" button. Everything else seems to have downloaded. Do others experience this? Any workaround? Relatively slow Internet connection (ADSL) but it's not like I'm using dialup. - Jmabel ! talk 01:03, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I don't experience this, but I have had to fiddle with my common.js and global.js quite a bit to achieve stability. You may want to follow mw:How to report a bug.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 05:44, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

I am planning to publish a site introducing free painting contents of Wikimedia Commons. When introducing Wikimedia commons from external sites, I think that usability improves by specifying a Category. Is it permissible to link by specifying the category from the external site as follows?

Example 1: Introduction of Van Gogh's high resolution picure https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Google_Art_Project_works_by_Vincent_van_Gogh

Example 2: Introduction of ’the Edo Hundred Scenery’ by Utagawa Hiroshige https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:One_Hundred_Famous_Views_of_Edo

Missing permission

I've got a warning tag by administrator for missing permission, but it was just cropped picture of picture from wikimedia commons, and also license of it was cc-by-sa 3.0. So I deleted the warning tag and added more information as possible I can. And this is a link of it: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sochi_2014_Curling_M_SWE_Ceremony_(Edit).jpg What I want to ask is, is my picture going to be deleted although I deleted a warning tag and added more information? Also, did I add enough information? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pmorelover (talk • contribs) 14:17, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

@Pmorelover: It should be fine. It was tagged only because it looks like a photo that might not be compatible with Commons and a link to the original had not yet been added. I went ahead and added Template:Other to both versions of the file, too. Note that if you use CropTool for such purposes, I believe it takes care of these templates, etc. automatically (you can enable CropTool in the Gadgets tab of the your preferences). — Rhododendrites talk14:31, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

I see that File:BeBePromoAS3.jpg has been uploaded to the Commons with an acceptable license, but I suspect the image is not really free to use. Rename an image ( spelling mistake)

This is the CORRECT filename Parengarenga_Harbour_New_Zealand_Aotearoa.jpg This is the incorrect name of the image as it is uploaded now Paerengarenga_Harbour_New_Zealand_Aotearoa.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by LawrieM (talk • contribs) 22:32, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

LawrieM, there is no need for adding the template {{Edit request}}, this is thought fo protected pages which can only be edited by admins (I’ve removed it above). Next time, please, use the move link in the popup menu on the upper right, cf. Help:RenameLink. I encountered a difficulty in naming the categories: "High speed trains at train stations in Taiwan" and "Trains at high speed rail stations in Taiwan"

I encountered a difficulty in naming the categories. I found two different ways of doing it: "High speed trains at train stations in Taiwan" and "Trains at high speed rail stations in Taiwan", but with seemingly different meanings. Thus the question I want to ask is: Which name is more suitable, or do you have a better name for it? Also, I would like to ask another question. I'm not sure if I should add a hyphen, for example like this: "High-speed trains at train stations in Taiwan" and "Trains at high-speed rail stations in Taiwan", you can see the difference between before and after adding "-". Do you think there is a need to add a hyphen between HIGH and SPEED? --Kai3952 (talk) 11:17, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

Chance of public humiliation

Does anyone think there is a significant chance of someone recognizing these people and it humiliating them? I think the image is useful for Wikipedia, but I don't want them to be humiliated by its use here. Impatient Behind The Wheel (talk) 19:28, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

Someone tracking my edits and harass me, what else can I do besides warn him?

I recently observed someone tracking my edits, but I have asked him to stop harassing me. After several times of communication, I think he has a tendency: "If you do not listen to him, he will always harass me." He think there is a problem with my edits, but it turns out that it's not my problem but what that he made a mistake or his own problem. I'm scared to happen again because it's happened too many times. In addition, sometimes he told me that these problems do not really exist, because he can solve it by himself(he did not do it). This looks like a farce to me! Even I have already told him: "This is harassment!" But his attitude told me that he does not consider it harassment, and he stressed he was not targeting me. The first time I encountered such a thing, so I do not know what to do. Now my only hope is, he does not make excuses to track my edits again and harass me. What do you think?--Kai3952 (talk) 20:59, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

But unfortunately, after several conversations with him, his attitude told me that "he does not consider it harassment, and he stressed he was not targeting me." If you want to know more details, I have written here. I have 7 pieces of evidence to prove that he has tracked my edits and harassed me. My question now is: If I did not report to COM:ANU, will the same thing happen again in the future?--Kai3952 (talk) 20:33, 25 February 2018 (UTC)

  • If you uploaded photos it must have been from an account. 68.174.135.46 could be literally anybody, so we have absolutely no way to know who you are, but really we don't have much way to know who you really are from an account name, either.
  • See COM:OTRS for who to clarify that you are the rights-holder of previously published work, and how to grant a license for it.
  • However, if the cover art is by someone other than yourself, you might not be the copyright-holder of that art, so, please, the authorization needs to come from whoever holds that copyright. Further, depending on whether the books would be considered notable at all, it is possible that they might be deemed out-of-scope even if all the rights are in order. - Jmabel ! talk 00:01, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Picture of Capt. Thomas Harvey Butler

A picture that supposedly is Capt. T. H. Butler was posted in mid-January. I want to use it in a publication, but I need verification that it is indeed Capt. Butler. There are no other known photos of this man who was also a secretary of state of the state of Tennessee. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carolyn gregory (talk • contribs) 00:34, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

@Carolyn gregory: File:THB-GAW-RNB-WM.jpg claims to be an "Own work" photo of Thomas Harvey Butler from "Gary Webb Archive" and is used in article en:Thomas H. Butler. It was uploaded by TN615RNB, that account's sole contribution here, to illustrate that article, which that account created and linked from multiple other articles. We don't have concrete information on "Gary Webb Archive". As there is definitively no human alive who could have photographed this person before his death on May 20, 1889, and the information claims it was taken 16 January 2018, 16:52:47 by the uploader, I tend to doubt this upload's provenance and the veracity of the uploader's claims. Thus, I have nominated it for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:THB-GAW-RNB-WM.jpg.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 09:57, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
I tend to read such own-work claims (& dates) as referring to a scan or second-generation photo, on the assumption (per Hanlon’s razor) that the uploader doesn’t understand the concept of COM:DW, or just unthinkingly accepted the defaults in the Upload Wizard form. But regardless I agree the lack of provenance is a problem.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:07, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Deletion of an image under Fred Oware

Hello admins:

Thank you for Wikipedia, thank you for the free source of vast knowledge for the world! I am editing a page under FRED OWARE, a person I know as a political figure and a businessman. Earlier information and texts about him are inaccurate and lacks credibility and so I want to write about him in full because I know more about him. He is the CEO of a public institution in Ghana by name Bui Power Authority (Bui Dam - Hydropower plant) and I used Wikilinks and external links to that effect BUT coundn't link his image and so it was deleted as copyright violation. Explanations to this effect on Wikipedia seems complex to comprehend. Please I don't want to violate any rule here because I love Wikipedia and just want to contribute to it. Please, how do I cite image in the text and infobox? Thank you
