Reverting a file

Hi there! I was trying to update the file File: Nebraska Legislature.svg to accurately reflect the current partisan split. I noticed that a version that had been recently reverted was the version needed, so just went to revert to that, since it was exactly identical to the version I tried to upload. However, after reverting, the previous version still remains. Why is this and what should I do to correct it? Thanks!! TheMrP (talk) 05:51, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

@TheMrP: Oftentimes, this is just an issue with caching. Try pressing Ctrl+Shift+R to refresh past your browser's and the server's cache. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:07, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
I tried that earlier, and it didn't do anything, but tried it again just now and it resolved the issue. Thanks!! TheMrP (talk) 06:11, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
@TheMrP and Koavf: I generally recommend COM:CACHE.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 07:18, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

Clarification

So just to clarify I can't upload the logo for All in the Family for the All in the Family page on Simple English even if I supply a source the proper licencing template etc? --Hellothere4 (talk) 14:22, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

@Hellothere4: Hi, and welcome. That is right. Unfortunately, there is no uploading of images on Simple English Wikipedia, and we don't allow fair use files here on Commons, so you would need permission for the logo from Tandem Productions or current corporate parent Sony Pictures Entertainment on their official website or social media or via OTRS to upload it here, as the copyright for it has not expired.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:42, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

Multi page document

Does the page navigation tool ("Go to page....") seen on a file information page, such as:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:01.29.2021_Letter_from_Senator_Warren_to_Acting_Chair_Lee.pdf

appear automatically, or is there a template or piece of code that must be used to produce it? DonFB (talk) 01:08, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Deleting an image

Hi,

I had difficulty deleting my image on my profile and found it impossible to do so.

Can you please delete it for me or help me delete it asap? Because I'm not happy with the image that I uploaded for my profile.

I hope to hear from you the soonest.

Thanks in advance.

Hello there. File:Anthea Roa Murfet.jpg has now been deleted. Generally, you cannot delete any images here unless you are an administrator – even if you uploaded them yourself. Next time you would like to have an image deleted, please add a line of wiki-code to the file page like . uploading photo

Apparently, I do not understand which boxes to check to upload a photo that I did not take. I got it from a state government website, asked if I could use the photo, and received a response back granting permission to use it. But when I tried to upload it through the creative commons link, it told me that it couldn't tell if the photo could be used or not and would not upload it. Please advise me on how to upload the photo.

Thanks in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zephyr609 (talk • contribs) 16:39, 1 February 2021‎ (UTC)

@Zephyr609: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the copyright holder license it on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via OTRS with carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:48, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick response. For clarity, I did not indicate that it was my own work. I added one photo that was my own work but was trying to add a second one. I'll just stop while I'm ahead. :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zephyr609 (talk • contribs) 17:03, 1 February 2021‎ (UTC)

Hello,

I cropped an image of medieval shelly ware for a wikipedia article I am creating. I meant to create a new, smaller image and not overwrite the existing image. Could someone revert the cropped image or tell me how I can do this myself if I have permission? thank you.

How to contribute

How would I go about helping over here? I have some idea what goes on: tagging copyvios, deletions discussions, adding to categories etc but wouldn't know where to get stuck in. Are there feeds to patrol? Also I heard a long time ago that Commons folk are all LTA exiles from en-wiki and should be avoided like the plague, how true is that and is it contagious? xD Kind regards, Zindor (talk) 11:33, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

HAER Photos not loading - T.J. O'brien Lock and Dam

MANEUVER BOAT AND CRANE BARGE. LOOKING EAST. - Illinois Waterway, Thomas J. O'Brien Lock and Control Works, East 130th Street, Chicago, Cook County, IL HAER IL-164-I-13

I've noticed several Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) photos of the Thomas J. (T.J.) O'brien Lock and Dam are not loading. (See example to the left.) I see only a "broken image link" icon. I saw additional affected photos in this link to a search I was attempting.

I assume this is affecting more than just these, but this is what I've seen.

Are others having this problem? Any idea what's going on here or how to resolve it? Is a server down somewhere? (I've tried viewing this both at home and at work, so I don't think it's an issue on my end) Thanks for any help. --Mindfrieze (talk) 16:31, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

Not able to upload an SVG file

Hi, I just tried to upload a modified version of File:Map of South America.svg. I have the following error message :

<a> elements can only link (href) to data: (embedded file), http:// or https://, or fragment (#, same-document) targets. For other elements, such as <image>, only data: and fragment are allowed. Try embedding images when exporting your SVG. Found <image http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink:href="map_of_south_america.jpg">..

I also tried to reupload that same file, without modifying it and had the same issue. How could I fix this ? Many TXS --Kimdime (talk) 15:34, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

The image tags contained in this file have references like xlink:href="Map_of_South_America.jpg" and even to some user directories. They serve no purpose, as they will only work on a computer that has images with the correct name in the correct place. I guess that due to some software updates, uploads with these kinds of references are now refused, even though they were accepted in 2013. As a first step, you could clean up the file by removing all of the <images>. --rimshottalk 16:57, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello - Wikipedia user here, I've been uploading a bunch of images on here to use over on Wikipedia. DarkGlow (talk) 16:15, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

@DarkGlow: You need to tell Wikidata about the connection first. Go to Sam Retford (Q58975312) and add "commons" and "Category:Sam Retford" in the "Multilingual sites" box. Then the infobox will start working. --bjh21 (talk) 17:06, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

The site ID "Commons" is unknown. Please use an existing site ID, such as "enwiki".

Login issue

This is User:Jmabel though I'm afraid I can't readily prove that. I had a major failure of my LastPass account (hopeless, I think; partly, but not entirely, my own fault) and I've effectively lost my password. When I did the "forgot password" thing, it seems to have failed: that is, it emailed my what is supposedly a temporary password, but it isn't working; when I use it, it tells me "Incorrect password or confirmation code entered. Please try again." Is there anything I can sanely do? Obviously, I can prove I'm me, including by doing a Zoom session or such with someone who can see my face (much validated by an existing category of photos, etc., or by anyone who knows me from Cascadia Wikimedians, the Wikimedia Summit, etc.). Really annoying; this has been a rough day. Feel free to email me through my account, that will reach me just fine, or edit my user talk page and it will notify me, but I guess I won't see any pings here since I can't log in & don't get email notifications for those. - 97.126.31.192 05:27, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

As discussed there, not really solved. Is there some way I can prove who I am and "usurp" my own account? - 97.126.31.192 15:44, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
Perhaps a checkuser could help. User:Jmabel was last active at 5:10 UTC and you posted your original message here at 5:27 UTC (using 97.126.31.192 IP address). 17 minutes IMO is rather a tiny time span and there is a great chance that indeed you are Jmabel. BTW. I use KeePass and store the file(s) with my passwords on my desktop PC, my laptop, my smartphone and on an SD card. A small drawback is that I have to synchronize the files manually. IMO so popular "cloud services" suck. --jdx Re: 17:09, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
I promise you, from here there is 100% chance that I am me. I lost the login here because I was trying to generate a new password to store in my "new" LastPass after the calamity. My old one was probably some arbitrary string generated by LastPass, no hope of remembering it, and for some reason the "temporary password" that they issue does not work for me. Long story how it went wrong -- one of those multi-level failure things, as I said "bad day." I would welcome a checkuser and can trivially prove that I am still receiving any mail sent to the account, am willing to do a Zoom or such and you'll see that my face matches, etc. - 97.126.31.192 18:52, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
Doesn't the lost password option go to your email address? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 00:46, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
It did. The problem is that the temporary password did not work. Anyway, it is all fixed now, thanks to Nahid Sultan. - Jmabel ! talk 07:33, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

COM:TOO Brazil:

OK Simple documentary, descriptive photographs in general, such as photographs documenting social reunions: In SC-AC 111630 SC 2002.011163-0 (2006): "mere photographic documentation, without artistic character, does not qualify for copyright ... making it possible to use a copy without mention of the photographer's name, since, according to Brazilian law, only artistic photography (by choice of the object and conditions of execution) is listed among protected works. ... [for example] with documentary photographs of social gatherings, where the author was performing duties for the defendant, a reference to the photographer's name is not required because it is not an artistic work..."[1]

Does this mean it is ok to upload a picture that fits this criteria? If so, which tag should I use? I coudn't find any that fits this description in Category:License tags of Brazil Mr White 03:38, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Categories for grouping the photos

I have been uploading photos from the city of Helsinki using a user:FinnaUploadBot (files) and so far I have tried to add least following categories.

  1. Creator category (example: Photographs by Simo Rista)
  2. Year category (example: 1970 in Helsinki)
  3. Place category (example: Mannerheimintie)

However, based on this discussion (in Finnish) I was thinking that it could be useful for future categorization by humans and also for finding photos that there would be also a category which would group the photos from "same session" of the photographer.

Format of the category name would be $CITY, $PLACENAME, $DATE, $PHOTOGRAPHER NAME.

Some examples:

Number of photos Category name
180 Helsinki, 12.10.1970, Rista Simo SER
76 Helsinki, 1940 -luku, Kannisto Väinö
63 Helsinki, 06.05.2013, Kiuru Sakari
59 Helsinki, Kaasutehtaankatu, 16.01.2017, Sakari Kiuru
59 Helsinki, Karhupuisto, 05.1970, Rista Simo SER
57 Helsinki, 1912, Brander Signe HKM
55 Helsinki, 15.05.2013, Kiuru Sakari
54 Helsinki, Karhupuisto, 05.1970, Rista Eeva SER

My question is that

  1. is it valid to add combination categories for grouping even when there are already separate categories for the place, date, and photographer?
  2. is there some rules on how long the category name can be?
    • ie. is in example Helsinki, Hämeentie 11-13, Kaikukatu 2, 1910 - 1920 -luku, Sundström Eric too long?
    • is it ok to have longer category names if the category is a hidden cat?

Cross-wiki upload filter)

How to include an explaining/illustrative thumbnail size image into a file description page?

I want to include an image as a thumb into the file description page of File:RJ-45 Ethernet socket on Lenovo T410 Laptop.jpg. The image shall be a complete image of the laptop computer from which the main image, an extremely detailed view of the interfaces on the side, is derived. Is that possible, and if so, how? And is that "permitted" or somehow unwanted user behaviour from my side? Pittigrilli (talk) 00:33, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

transferring a file to commons

I don't have any experience with this, could someone transfer this file RobertChesebrough.jpg to Commons please (if possible)? Thanks very much! Kind regards, Saschaporsche (talk) 09:52, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Saschaporsche Unfortunately, that's not possible right now as essential information about the image is missing. In order to correctly document the copyright status, we need to know as much as possible about who created the original photograph and when and where it was published first. If it was indeed published prior to January 1, 1926, we'd need at least some sort of evidence for that. --El Grafo (talk) 10:10, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
OK, thanks for your quick reaction. Unfortunately the original uploader of the image is not active anymore (at least on the EN wikipedia), so we can't ask him. Kind regards, Saschaporsche (talk) 10:18, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

  • @Megameul: You do not update a logo on Commons by overwriting; you update by uploading a new file with a different name. Remember that the largest users of Commons are the various Wikipedias, and that an historical logo may be just as important in an encyclopedia as a current one. Also, a different logo presumably has a different date, probably has a different author, and possibly has different copyright considerations, each of which is also a reason for a distinct file page from the old logo. - Jmabel ! talk 13:42, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

A photo of the front cover of a newspaper

Hello. Many years ago I worked for a newspaper. The first day edition was on November 10th 1988. I have a copy of this edition. I have a photo of the front page which I wanted to upload so that it can be linked to an article .

Here is the article

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Post_(British_newspaper)

Under the guidelines it would appear that uploading the image may not be permitted. Can you verify whether I can upload or not?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cliffoakley (talk • contribs) 13:07, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

  • @Cliffoakley: I can't think of any way something like this from as recent as 1988 could possibly be in the public domain, so unless you can get permission (probably following the instructions at COM:OTRS) from the newspaper company or, if that is gone, the assignee of their intellectual property rights, this cannot be on Commons.
  • You might be able to upload directly to the English-language Wikipedia under their "fair use" policy. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. Note that this is an en-wiki policy and may be different for Wikipedias in other languages.

Replace a .png logo with its original .svg version

Greetings,

I want to use this logo in an article about that company, but the current upload is a .png, while most logos on Commons are .svg which probably scale better. I have identified the original .svg file on the company website, which I would like to upload. However, I am having technical difficulties with this: Uploading a "new version" of the file allows to specify a url source, which would make it easy to upload the new file from here. However, I am told the filename can not be changed that way, and I reckon having a .svg being named "name.png" would result in confusion. Uploading an entirely new file, on the other hand, does not allow me to use a url as the source.

So... yeah, sort of a newbie question, but could someone tell me what is considered best practice in this case? --LordPeterII (talk) 09:55, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

@LordPeterII: You may download it to your device and then upload it as a new file with svg extension using PD-textlogo, the license tag you used for File:Polymateria-logo.png. Please use internal links.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:15, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Okay thanks, I shall do that. I was originally considering updating the file also because I doubt the .png version would now be used anymore, but I guess I won't worry about that atm. I'll also make sure to use internal links henceforth - I didn't know how to suppress the file from showing up, but looking at your code, I see it is done by placing a ":" at the beginning. Good to know :) --LordPeterII (talk) 11:24, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

Can you help me to add Karleby Goats.png logo right? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Runkleri (talk • contribs) 10:42, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

@Runkleri: Hi, and welcome. Please have the copyright holder license it on their official website or social media or send permission via OTRS. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. Uploading screenshots of video's to Commons

Hi I was wondering what the policy is on taking a screenshot of a video and uploading it to the commons, is it considered fair use or do I have to get the publisher's permission? — Preceding unsigned comment added by NSNW (talk • contribs) 00:01, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

You would need the publisher's permission entirely. Commmons does not allow fair use because fair use means that it is copyrighted in the first place. Certain wikis (English Wikipedia is a common example) allows for fair use but Commons is for hosting stuff that anyone else can use (with some restrictions). -- Ricky81682 (talk) 00:45, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

I am writing her entry at the Wikipedia (catalan version) and I am not sure if I can take a picture of one of her paintings that hangs in the town hall and add it to the article. Monthly photo challenge

SECOND REQUEST: I successfully uploaded a photo file last week [Cypress Lake at Magnolia Plantation.jpg]. It's on the site. I tried to enter it into the monthly photo challenge, and all that appeared on that page is the file name - no picture. After I few days I removed the file from the challenge gallery and tried again - same result. I'd really like to submit this photo (and another) but I can't figure out how to complete the process. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DonJCR21 (talk • contribs) 15:53, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

I uploaded a photo taken by myself but it is showing file missing information how can i do — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 37.231.241.220 (talk) 22:02, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Second impeachment trial of Donald Trump

Since it appears that the Second impeachment trial of Donald Trump relies heavily on videos, I wonder if we have any from the Second impeachment trial of Donald Trump. Are there any on Commons? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 00:30, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Taking photo from commons and putting in an article

Hi,

Does WLM have author's permissions on all subjects that are part of the WLM? Where can it be seen?

Hello. Where can we find out if WLM (Wiki Loves Monuments) have permissions on all of the images which are part of the WLM contest?

– --Matteo251 (talk) 12:28, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Parchment photographs The Secret of the Unicorn (Tintin) and model ship The Unicorn

Hello, I need your help today regarding a question I have about the possibility of crossing two images on Commons. I have at home a model of Tintin's ship The Unicorn as well as a parchment used in the album The Secret of the Unicorn (like these: https://www.google.com/search?q=parchemin+le+secret+de+la+licorne&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjzkY-uuvjuAhVQx4UKHYr9CoAQ_AUoAXoECAUQAw&biw=1440&bih=789).

I wondered whether or not I had the possibility to upload these photos that I would have taken myself so as to include them in the corresponding articles. Thanks in advance for any response, have a nice day!

Use of screenshot or photo from a Facebook page

I am currently making an article on En wiki and need a photo, is it ok to upload a screenshot of a photo in a public group on Facebook? (https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=259603242398026&set=a.218898489801835) the article I am making is about Max a dog that got a special award in the UK a few days ago - see BBC news report (https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-cumbria-56122795). I couldn't find any pics on commons or flickr so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Joseywales1961 (talk) 15:10, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

I am an abuser of Wikipedia. Burmese admin said that I intimidation harassment him. Actually, I didn't intimidation harassment him, he was always going to oppression bullying me. His oppression bullying, I could not endure, I have an argument about him. Others are not pictures, take photos from his own, Admin then gives him permission. @Kazo lev: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via OTRS. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. In addition, please sign your posts.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:43, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

Definition of "published" for a painting

I am trying to understand what the definition of "published" means for a painting for copyright purposes. If a painting is exhibited at an art exhibit, does that qualify as "published"? Or do copies of a painting have to be offered for sale? The article en:Public domain in the United States says: "The claim that "pre-1926 works are in the public domain" is correct only for published works." I am specifically interested in the suprematist works of Kazimir Malevich created in 1910s. It is usually easy enough to find out when a given painting was created (and even exhibited) but I am much less sure about the "published" thing. Thanks, Nsk92 (talk) 10:50, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

An exhibition does not constitute publication. An exhibition catalogue would (if made available to the general public), or a newspaper article. With a quick search, I only found this catalogue, from 1920. --rimshottalk 11:14, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
Hmm, ok, thanks. Malevich held many exhibitions in Russia in 1910s before the revolution (some are mentioned in the Wikipedia article about him), and I assume that most of them had some kind of catalogues for the public. However, verifying that would take some doing. How about his date of death, 1935? That was over 85 years ago. I saw some other copyright tags here in Commons indicating that this might put his works in PD in the U.S. by now. Thanks, Nsk92 (talk) 12:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

@Rimshot: what is your basis for "An exhibition does not constitute publication"? Seems unlikely to me: by that standard, a typical sculpture is never published. - Jmabel ! talk 23:18, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Indeed, see Commons:Public_art_and_copyrights_in_the_US, en:Publication. In the US, a sculpture is only published when 3D copies have been made available (this is different from e.g. Germany). This has only been the case since 1978, so it's not very relevant to us yet. Before '78, the theoretical possibility of making copies (that is, public display) has been enough. The same is true for 2D works, where copies are more easily available, obviously. I don't know about the situation in Russia at the time. The texts I could find refer to publication, but don't define it. In this particular case, we can probably assume that publication has taken place, because there has been a catalogue.
The Russian copyright term in 1996 (URAA date) was apparently 50 years p.m.a. For Malevich this means that his works have been PD in Russia since at least 1985 (retroactively). This means that you can savely use , if there was any kind of publication at all before '73 (beginning of copyright relation between US and USSR), or publication without copyright notice after that. There might be cases where the images are not actually PD in the US, but I think it's exceedingly unlikely. I had assumed 70 years p.m.a., which would have made it much more difficult (1935 + 70 = 2005). --rimshottalk 21:09, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

@Rimshot: "The same is true for 2D works": not sure "the same" as what. Are you saying that pre-1978, exhibition suffices? If so, I think that for the case in question that would reverse your "verdict." - Jmabel ! talk 23:31, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

That's how would I interpret that article on the US situation, though public display does not seem to be very well defined. The Russian situation might be different. I'm not expert on either, obviously, but the Berne Convention at least is clear enough:
Article 3 (3) ... The performance of a dramatic, dramatico-muskal, cinematographic or musical work, the public recitation of a literary work, the communication by wire or the broadcasting of literary or artistic works, the exhibition of a work of art and the construction of a work of architecture shall not constitute publication.

SVG file not displaying properly 2

Wrong font and font size

In the PNG versions of the image File:Weasel words de.svg the font is not displayed properly. In the original file (link) the font is displayed properly. I edited the image with Inkscape. − Gebu (talk) 11:24, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

The font ("Kalam") is not displayed probably in my browser either, as I don't have it installed. The brower's replacement font fits the speech bubble, however, so that it is less of a problem. See Help:SVG#Font_substitution_and_fallback_fonts for help on the font types that are supported. You can convert the text to paths in Inkscape, if you really want it to look the same everywhere. This will result in a non-editable text. --rimshottalk 21:22, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

  • Almost nothing is copyrighted by Wikipedia, so I think your question contains at least one bad assumption. Could you be more specific as to what content you want to reuse? Some things on Wikipedia (though not here on Wikimedia Commons, where you are asking the question) are there only on a "fair use" basis and cannot readily be reused. Here on Commons, everything should be reusable (including making derivative works) but some of it requires specific acknowledgments. Some is public domain and can be used as you will; most is (variously) free-licensed and requires at least an indication of license, and in many cases an acknowledgment of authorship. - Jmabel ! talk 15:29, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Many of the categories are empty or mostly empty

I've put the category "Companies established in Japan in 1888" under a new parent category called "Companies established in 1888 by country"... but when I click on it, nothing happens (Category:Companies established in 1888 by country is empty). There are quite a few other categories in the category Companies by year by country that have the same problem.--Kai3952 (talk) 12:14, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

It appears from the history of Category:Companies established in Japan in 1888 that User:User:Morio who created this category in 2016 had already included Category:Companies established in 1888 by country as a parent. @RandomCanadian: Hi, and welcome. Exactly what wikilinks in what captions are troubling you, and why?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:34, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: File:Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem Organ.oga (they weren't displaying as wikilink), but somebody apparently fixed it by simply removing it. RandomCanadian (talk) 13:46, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
@RandomCanadian: I'm guessing you are talking about doing something like one or another of the following:
:en:Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem en:Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem
Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem
Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem
Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem same link different caption

On the details on becoming an admin, see COM:A. The short of it is: you need to have the trust of the community that you will handle the admin tools well. This usually comes from being an experienced user with a history of useful edits and level-headed community interaction. I'm afraid you still have a way to go. --rimshottalk 20:10, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

Further reading versus citation links. Can you help?

Hi community,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me...I'd like to improve a Wikipage I created by addressing the following message:

"This article includes a list of references, related reading or external links, but its sources remain unclear because it lacks inline citations. Please help to improve this article by introducing more precise citations. (December 2016) (Learn how and when to remove this template message)"

The links I've included at the bottom of the page are really just suggestions for further, related reading - rather than specific citations linked to content within the page.

I would like to keep the links because I think they're useful and offer some nice options for further reading, but at the same time I want my page to be as clean and tidy as possible, and without any correction / exception errors or messages (like the one above).

Can anyone help me? What would you recommend?

The page in question is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Edmonds

I'd be very grateful.

Thanks, very much.

Hi Jeff Jeff G.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I'm still a little unsure what the best (and polite) way is to communicate with community members - hopefully this is ok? As I'm sure you've guessed I'm a real novice when it comes to Wikipedia editing.. but I am learning! :-)

This is regarding my query about Reference sections versus Further Reading questions - in this case for the Peter Edmonds Wikipedia page.

Peter Edmonds is my late father but I also have my own separate interest in history, particularly around Royal and crime related stories - and I like to do solid research across the related subjects.

I guess what I'm looking to do is just to strip out any of the citation hyperlinks within the existing Reference section and just have a new, cleaner, more straight forward Further Reading section which just contains a list of links for people to visit, should they wish to learn about the history in more detail or a different context.

Is that something you might be able to help me with?

I just want the page to be nice and clean with no errors and no dead-end links.

Any assistance you can offer will be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Ben (Edmonds), UK. Bedmonds2017 (talk) 15:44, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

user rights of photographies

As a museum we have ordered the production of the photos and we have bought the rights of the photos of our art works. How can I upload those professionally made photos without asking for the permission at the photographer, as we do have this permission already? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt Domschatz Halberstadt (talk • contribs) 16:10, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

@Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt Domschatz Halberstadt: Hi, and welcome. Please have the copyright holders send permission for the artworks and photos directly via OTRS with a COM:L compliant license and COM:CONSENT verbiage confirming that they understand what they are agreeing to, with a carbon copy to you. If copyright was transferred, please send the copyright transfer paperwork as required by US law.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:32, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
I'm wondering if there may be a misunderstanding here. If a photographer makes accurate reproductions of two-dimensional artwork, there is no new creative contribution for the photographer to copyright, so the photographer's permission does not even enter into the matter.@Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt Domschatz Halberstadt: Does that address what you are asking? Or are you asking about a different situation? - Jmabel ! talk 02:15, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Sorry, I did not feel justified in assuming that all artworks under discussion were subject to PD-Art, or that all copyright transfers were documented in writing.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:36, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I'm not assuming anything, other than that the question was about "the permission at the photographer," nothing about the artist. - Jmabel ! talk 14:44, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Second deletion nomination of a file

Hi! A few days ago I nominated for deletion some files that had been deleted and then re-uploaded with the same title – one of them was this. I used the "Nominate for deletion" link in the left-hand navigation column. I've just noticed that what has happened is this. Is that the expected result? It seems counter-intuitive, given that the page carries in red the warning "Please do not make any edits to this archive". If it's OK then good; but if not, would some kind person tell me how to fix it? Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 15:24, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

Yes, that's the expected result. You would do that if you saw the need for discussion. For previously deleted files, you can nominate them for speedy deletion, which will not open a new deletion discussion. The reason in this case would be G4 (Recreation of content previously deleted per community consensus). --rimshottalk 20:17, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
Many thanks, Rimshot, I'll remember G4 for another time. Should I at this point make changes to the deletion pages for these three files, or let the deletion process run its natural course? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 11:14, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
As the previous discussion is still visible, it's obvious that this was recreation of deleted content, so there's nothing you need to do. --rimshottalk 15:18, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

How to upload artist photos
Hello! I am a manager of performers, articles about which are on Wikipedia. Please tell me how to correctly and without deleting their prof. photos and images in Commons and after in articles? How to correctly draw up a license and all agreements (artists themselves, photographers, etc.)
translator: Google Translate via   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 09:02, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
Hi, and welcome. You have been uploading png and jpg images from elsewhere without evident permission. The following applies to each image. The copyright holder needs to license it on their website or social media or send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the images may still be uploaded to English or Russian Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F or ru:ВП:КДИ because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 09:02, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Depends. Maybe you should first talk to your parents about this. --E4024 (talk) 13:57, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
Asking your parents is typically good advice on something like this. We do not have a specific minimum age for contributors, but it can be a little hard for someone your age to participate in what is basically a community of adults. Are you just wanting to upload pictures you take? If so, and if you at least initially stay away from taking pictures of other underage people until you have a good sense of what belongs here, and if you won't take it personally if some of your pictures are deleted, you'll probably do fine. If you want to come in to edit in other ways, you might wait a bit. We certainly have contributors here as young as you, and adults who have uploaded photos that they took that young (myself included. I took this picture in 1966 at the age of 11).

Mayoral portrait posted on his Facebook

Hi gang,

I'm writing a draft about my mayor on the English Wikipedia and had a question.

picture website article

This website used Vergano's portrait from his Facebook page and uploaded it onto their website. Would I be able to do the same with Commons? Thanks for your help

TheCartoonEditor (talk) 14:41, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

@TheCartoonEditor: Hi, and welcome. Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept that image, and have the copyright holder license it on their official website or social media or send the image and permission via OTRS with carbon copy to you. @Jeff G.: Hello, and thank you for your response. Commons:Licensing mentions nothing of social media photos. The mayor uploaded the picture onto his Facebook (as I said above) and the website simply took the picture and gave credit. Would this satisfy "have the copyright holder license it on their official website or social media"? Thanks. TheCartoonEditor (talk) 15:07, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
@TheCartoonEditor: Where is the free license for that photo? Who is the photographer? How may we verify that?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:14, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
(cross-posted) @TheCartoonEditor: We need a specific COM:L free license explicitly offered by the holder of the copyright, typically the photographer (or their heirs). It is unlikely that the mayor took his own picture. If it weren't for the pandemic, I would say that it is likely that the mayor would likely let you take his picture for Commons and Wikipedia. You might make the contact now and arrange to do that when people can see people. At the risk of being political: heck, if he's a Republican he might let you take it right now, but wear two masks if he won't wear one. - Jmabel ! talk 15:24, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

I assume this are reproductions of the original logos, as they are used in the articles about the related companies. For reproductions permission from the copyright holder of the logos is needed. If they are not reproductions but just drawings, they are unlikely usable and out of scope. Please advise if I'm mistaken. --Krd 18:32, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Jeff G., thanks, the application is maps which contain detail like text which can only be read when zoomed in quite a bit to get the resolution necessary for the map to be useful, which makes the png too large for many phones, though i11 and i12 seem to handle it fine, also other high end units with big memory, and on some browsers. • @Barkaimy: did you take the photo or not? If so, could you possibly upload a non-watermarked version? The image doesn't seem to have much commercial value, so it shouldn't need a watermark to prevent theft. Also, what is your relation to Tchadinfos?

What I need to do to cancel the deletion?

I have made scan of the photo from family album with my grandfather and now it's marked by hater to deletion - Also I have the negatives of which this photo was made. What I need to change in description to cancel the deletion of the file? User:Dergalev 09:55, 18/02/21 (UTC)

1) By not calling the nominator a "hater". That is a personal attack and does only weaken your position. You claimed this image to be your own work from 2014. The depicted died in 1982, the image is likely even older. 2) The place for the discussion is not here, but here: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Blohin Leonid Gavrilovich.jpg. --Túrelio (talk) 10:54, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

edits to VT Halter Marine page

Hi -- I am the communications manager at Halter Marine. Our Wikipedia page has been neglected for eons, so I set out today to add content. I fully understand the rules that content must be neutral and citable. I believe that is what I did -- I added content and cited it back to press releases we have published with links to our website. I added photos that I took myself, so zero copyright issues. The images I added are all mine.

I do not understand why my content was flagged. Nothing was puffery, exaggerated or glowing. As Joe Friday said, "just the facts."

Can someone please work with me to get my content re-published? I received notices from Jeff G but for the life of me I cannot find where to reply to those notices.

Our company page needs new information on the page, and I want to do the right thing.

Many thanks, Liz Johnson

License, possibly repetitive issue

File:Stapler Ferngesteuert 092014.jpg Moin. I'm not sufficiently aquainted with the terminology, so what I got is probably explained elsewhere, but I'm not sure I'd recognize it, even if I had it right in front of my eyes. So I'm asking for help here. I uploaded this, forgot the license and added it after a bot-message. Is that matter taken care of? And while I'm at it, from what I found it would seem there's countries where pictures taken in public can't be published just so on commons, so perhaps I should add that this was taken on a ferry terminal on a public road in Norway. Anny issues with that? Regards, --G-41614 (talk) 08:21, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Was rätst Du mir nun? Nochmals danke für Deine Mühe. --JoHaupt (talk) 10:43, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
--JoHaupt (talk) 16:24, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

MP3 BBC Radio Norfolk Broadcast

Hello.

I have been given permission by the Executive Producer, BBC Radio Norfolk, to upload and present a 1996 programme on an on-line media platform of my choosing. Unfortunately they themselves cannot access the original recording from their archives but I have a reasonable digital copy.

Looking at the upload options I am not sure that Wikipedia will accommodate this on the page I am constructing.

I would be grateful if you could let me know how I can make this happen.

Kindest regards.

Tom Elliston — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leon Silt (talk • contribs) 10:47, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

@Leon Silt: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please feel free to request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits), having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound). Then, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept as-is without permission, and have that Executive Producer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the file and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, please sign your posts.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:13, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
@Leon Silt: What Jeff G. wrote is correct, but may make this sound more daunting than it is. There are several separate issues (apart from the fact that you should sign your posts by ending them with "~~~~"):
  1. You'll need to upload to Commons directly, not cross-wiki
  2. We need this in a "free" format, so you will need to convert to a format accepted per COM:FT#Sound.
  3. We need licensing to be explicit. The simplest thing would be if someone at BBC Radio Norfolk has access to their website and can post a statement, probably on an otherwise unused page, identifying what work they are licensing (programme, date), saying exactly what license they are offering (I suggest CC-BY-SA 4.0), and to whom the work should be attributed (presumably BBC Radio Norfolk). Then they can let you know the URL for that, and in the Permission field of the Information template you can write that URL. (If you upload with the "Wizard" I don' think it guides you through that, but you can edit the file page accordingly immediately after you upload.)
Let me know if you need to be further walked through this. - Jmabel ! talk 15:52, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

  • Assuming that really is a question about using Commons, you are going to have to be much more specific about what you are trying to do and what is going wrong. That's almost like, "Why doesn't my computer do what I'd like it to?" - Jmabel ! talk 15:55, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

  • Why do you think there is any CC license? The default is to reserve all rights, and that's what we have to assume in the absence of a specific statement to the contrary. - Jmabel ! talk 15:56, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

  • @Такси 057: We're going to need much more context than that about what you tried to do and what went wrong. You haven't even said what type of file you are trying to upload, how big, or what tool you are using (Special:UploadWizard? Something else?), nor have you described the behavior other than that you believe it failed. There is basically no quota on uploading files, so that is not the problem. - Jmabel ! talk 02:13, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Файлы большого размера

Кто-нибудь может починить сервер? Файлы большого размера около 1 Гб и больше не загружаются. После загрузки надпись «Сервер не ответил за ожидаемое время». Wlbw68 (talk) 14:37, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

They are asking why they can no longer upload files over 1GB and asking for the server to be "fixed." - Jmabel ! talk 15:59, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
Jmabel No, I'm talking about the server failing when the file is large. You can see for yourself. For example, files 1 and 2 cannot be loaded.Wlbw68 (talk) 16:41, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
@Wlbw68: I don't see the distinction from what I wrote, but since you apparently read and write English, and chose to put this on an English-language help page rather than at Commons:Форум, perhaps you could just state your question clearly in English. - Jmabel ! talk 17:03, 19 February 2021 (UTC).
Jmabel. How do I upload a large file? Please, help. The server crashes every time; it is defective.Wlbw68 (talk) 17:11, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
@Wlbw68: So far you haven't even said what tool you are using (e.g. Special:UploadWizard, Commonist, whatever), or what is the evidence of a server crash, whether smaller files succeed, or really much of anything. Please, don't specifically address it to me (I don't have any special expertise here), just start from zero and describe, in English, what is happening, so that someone has a fair chance to work out what is going wrong. - Jmabel ! talk 02:08, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
Also: have you tried User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js? - Jmabel ! talk 02:09, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
I tried to load a file five times using the (e.g. Special:UploadWizard, Commonist, whatever) tool, my more experienced colleague Vladis13 tried to do the same 10 times using the (User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js) (e.g. Special:UploadWizard, Commonist, whatever) tools. Here is our discussion with him in Russian. Large files, more than 1 GB, cannot be downloaded in any way at present.Wlbw68 (talk) 09:54, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
@Wlbw68: Special:UploadWizard and Commonist are two completely distinct tools. The latter is not even browser-based.
If chunked uploads aren't working, the I really have no idea what will. My Russian is pretty weak, literally not among my half dozen best languages, so I can't read that interchange. It would be good for someone to know exactly what the failure symptoms were in using chunked uploads. Rillke, this might interest you as well.
I doubt I can help here. Can someone more from the tech side of this step up? - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
You, Jmabel, or your colleague, Rillke, can try to upload any large file. For example this one (Download link − «Московская Библия 1663 г. скачать бесплатно с сервера (free download)») and then you will understand what is happening.Wlbw68 (talk) 19:04, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
@Wlbw68: There is no way to know whether someone else can replicate your experience. Clearly, this is not failing for everybody. Again, it would be useful for you to describe what you observe when this fails. - Jmabel ! talk 00:34, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

  • If the change is so trivial that that does not apply, just upload a new version of the file in question. There should be a link to do that low down on the file page. - Jmabel ! talk 12:03, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

As both my parents have passed away, I am the sole owner of these slides, and as I have inherited them, I assume that I own the copyright. However, it's not my own work (it's my father's), and I cannot get written permission from him, obviously. Since I own the copyright to them, in the Upload Wizard in the section of why I have the right to publish these, I can only find "Another reason not mentioned above", but I have to insert a copyright tag. Which one is appropriate, please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by LeicesterChris (talk • contribs) 19:00, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

  • @LeicesterChris: If you inherited the residuum of the estate, and there was no explicit provision about intellectual property rights, then you presumably inherited those.
  • The Wizard may or may not be able to help, but you can edit the license after uploading. You don't say what license you want to give, but you'll want something like . - Jmabel ! talk 00:39, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Thank you! I've found this post again (I couldn't work out how to use the help desk to see what I'd posted earlier) - and yes, I want to make a few photos available as CC BY-SA 4.0. I definitely own the rights as I'm the only surviving heir, but I can't claim it's my own work. Do I just type " into the Upload Wizard? And is there anywhere where I can find out about these tags? Thanks in advance! Chris. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LeicesterChris (talk • contribs) 13:02, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
    • For starters: that is just a way of producing the link to the template while showing the syntax for using it. So the template is Template:Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs and you use it by having wikitext .
    • I don't think you can do this through the Wizard as such. I think you have to tell it you are using Cc-by-sa-4.0, then edit the license template name on file page.
    • If you want to know more you might start with Commons:Transfer of copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 02:08, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

  • @咽頭べさ: I presume that by "lock" you mean some sort of protection. It would help a lot if you would identify which past edits constituted vandalism. We'd need to look at the pattern of those to know whether file protection is the correct solution. - Jmabel ! talk 12:01, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

  1. I don't see anyone in the history there who has been blocked. Has any of this been reported at COM:AN/V, which is the place to report vandalism? It doesn't look like there has been a vandlistic edit there in weeks, so protection seems unlikely. - Jmabel ! talk 02:13, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Help -

The License process is so confusing.

I was given access to some negatives by the copyright holder. I then digitized and inverted the images (making them a derivative work). Finally, the copyright holder (the heir to the copyright) gave me permission to post to Wikipedia as a share w/attribution (Photo by Ethel Wight Studio, Portland, ME). How do I make it right on copyright? \ Ref: https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=57229592%40N03&view_all=1&text=Consoli — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dontaylor50 (talk • contribs) 09:59, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons only accepts licences that allow commercial reuse, but the photos at Flickr have a non-commercial restriction. The easiest way would be if DonTaylor50 at Flickr could change the licences to Creative Commons by Attribution ShareAlike 2.0 without the non-commercial bit. Alternatively he may send a permission by email as explained at COM:OTRS. Otherwise I'm afraid we can't accept those images. De728631 (talk) 17:49, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Please note that the copyright for a photograph is usually held by the original photographer and not by the person(s) depicted. So unless you took the photo yourself, we cannot keep it without an explicit permission from the copyright holder. That aside, the photo is unlikely to be used since your account was bloked at the English Wikipedia for being too promotional. So it would not fit into the project scope of Wikimedia Commons either. Hello,

I uploaded one image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cheman_Shaik.png#filelinks

below is the warning message along with suggestions.

The uploader did not provide sufficient information (a valid and suitable tag) on this media's copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the file could be deleted seven days after the upload (23 February 2021). Please note that Commons does not accept files claimed under fair use. It is suggested to read the intro of Commons' licensing policy, about essential information and (in many cases) about Internet images. If you need help ask at the Commons:Help desk.

Help me fix it? --Wisdomwiki 40 (talk) 15:38, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Unfortunately this file had to be deleted because there is no free licence in the paper you presented as a source. Photographs like this are automatically copyrighted and non-free, so they may not be used elsewhere without an explicit permission from the copyright holder. Movie poster deletion

Hi, I wrote a wiki page about a movie and wanted to add a poster to the movie. However, the poster file File:RobinsonAndCrusoePoster.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Why is that if I see a lot of movie posters on Wikipedia, eg here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beginners#/media/File:Beginners_Poster.jpg Or, how can I go about showing the movie poster? I want to show it for this movie https://sk.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robinson_%26_Crusoe_(film) Thanks, HuhuLesny — Preceding unsigned comment added by HuhuLesny (talk • contribs) 17:17, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello, please sign your posts by typing four tilde characters like this: ~~~~. Unlike the English Wikipedia where you found the poster, Commons does not accept fair use of non-free images. We only accept movie posters and the like where the copyright term has expired or where there is a free licence at the source page. As it seems, the Slovak Wikipedia does not permit fair use either, so I'm afraid you can't use that image for your new article. De728631 (talk) 17:32, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Pics from Two different countries

I'm based in Zanzibar at the moment but tavel frequently to Sudan. can I upload pictures from both countries? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arwa M Othman (talk • contribs) 20:24, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

As long as you take photographs of non-copyrightable things (landscape, plants, animals, food, ...), you are the only copyright holder and can choose a license. For copyrightable things (art, architecture, ...), you need to be sure that they are old enough to be out of copyright, as neither country has freedom of panorama. In Zanzibar, there is an exception for public "folklore", of which photos may be taken and published. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Tanzania and Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Sudan for details. Feel free to ask about a particular photo, if you are unsure. --rimshottalk 21:06, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

I have an image that I’d like to add to Slim Aaron bio

It’s a shame a photographer of his classic imagery merit does not have a photograph of the man with his bio.

I put together an image that I found of him, a self portrait with him on a chair in Athens around 1960, and I found another picture of him in later life at a gallery opening of his images holding his book. I put the two images together and would love to see it on his Wikipedia page.

How can we go about that?

Can I send you the image and you can put it up? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lagunakayaker (talk • contribs) 20:54, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

Images from the 1960s are most likely still copyrighted and cannot be used without permission from the copyright holder. De728631 (talk) 17:35, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

Photo challenge entry

I am attempting to enter photos for February's challenge on bridges. I can find where to enter the file name and description, but I fail to transfer the photo. When looking at Preview, I see my entry and an empty frame, not a photo. I've dragged the photo everywhere I can think of and tried to copy and paste, all to no avail. What am I missing in the instructions for transferring the photo?

ChuckN13 — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChuckN13 (talk • contribs) 01:48, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

  • @ChuckN13: It's not clear what you mean by "transferring" the photo. "Uploading"? Something else? Are you on a PC, a phone, or what?
  • If you mean uploading and you mean a PC, then probably the simplest tool is Special:UploadWizard, but I'm not aware of that having a "preview" at all; if it does, I wouldn't expect to see the photo in a preview before it is uploaded, just continue.
  • I can't think of anywhere where dragging or copy-paste would be involved, though, so maybe I don't understand what you are trying to do. - Jmabel ! talk 09:38, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi Jmabel, I am working on a Mac. The three files are jpg, exported from Lightroom and range from 4 - 22 meg.

Using "Participate" and "Upload File" I in fact dragged one file to test the upload. Then I copied and pasted a link for it to the photo contest. When looking at Preview, all appeared well, I could see the photo and its file name and comment were present upon hovering. So, I uploaded three more files by again dragging from my MacOS directory. All four files can be seen at ChuckN13.

The test file (cloud-shrouded Golden Gate Bridge) is no longer visible. The one line text entry in the contest is also gone. I am confused. Any help is appreciated.

Chuck — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChuckN13 (talk • contribs) 16:08, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

  • Size should be fine.
  • I assume "Participate" and "Upload File" are buttons or links on some page. URL or wiki link, please.
  • "copied and pasted a link for it to the photo contest": Would that be this edit (it's a lot simpler if we discuss specific diffs, you can find all of yours at Special:Contributions/ChuckN13). Looks to me like that succeeded, though, so I'm not sure what's the problem. Maybe a caching issue on your end, so you saw the old version of the page? - Jmabel ! talk 18:44, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

Entering the photo contest: Bridges

I loaded a photo and found how to enter it into the contest. It was visible with hover file name and caption. I loaded three more photos but when I went to the contest entry, my photo was gone from both the gallery and the entry line containing file name and comment.

What can be my problem? Is there a limit on file size that is retroactively imposed?

Thank you for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChuckN13 (talk • contribs) 15:39, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

@PeaceMakerEX: Guideline COM:OW allows "replacement with higher resolution versions of the same file, however, without using artificial methods to generate higher resolution". @Jeff G.: Thanks for the clarification and reverting the overwrites, Jeff. I'll cease to overwrite files with AI enhanced versions of known files. @Jeff G.: actually sir i have read it once but i believe i have to read the article again, but i noticed in some articles they are using SCREENSHOTS and they just provide the website or the URL were they took the image in order to release the copyrights that is why i thought if i will do the same it will be accepted, now what i have in mind is that the SCREENSHOTS will work because of that idea but maybe i did a mistake with the correct category or tags, maybe. i am not sure. @Ganímedes and Mussklprozz: Since you have been dealing with the EurekAlert OTRS case before, you might want to weigh in here. De728631 (talk) 17:32, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
I've only handled one file, with a specific OTRS permission from the author and the university. No clue from the rest. They're not included in the ticket. Regards. --Ganímedes (talk) 17:54, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
Eurekalert declares here that all content uploaded to them shall be subject to reuse. However, there is no clear statement given about the license to be used with this particular file. The requirement that attribution must be given would imply cc-by-sa, but we should not make an assumption of our own. @Ernsts: there is a contact email given on the right upper side of the source page. I think the best way to proceed is that you can contact that person and ask them to send an explicit permission to OTRS, using this template. – Cheers, --Mussklprozz (talk) 22:16, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
@Mussklprozz: Thanks for the answer and hint. The Usage Restrictions given at EurekAlert here do not seem to clearly allow the image to be modified. My main question here was whether this can be mapped in Wikimedia Commons, or whether the Wikimedia Commons Usage Rights always allow subsequent editing (with citation of the source, of course). Please note that the image here is perfect and there is no need to modify it in any way. (Situation may differ for others e.g. https://www.eurekalert.org/multimedia/pub/115572.php where it might be useful to translate the caption)
The image given here may be 'nice to have' but that's not a 'must'. Therefore the effort to ask the authors seems too high to me in this case. I'm afraid I don't have that much time to take care of it: I still have a big list of articles I want to create, so unfortunately I have to prioritize. So let's dispense with the image, I'll put a link to the EurekAlert article in the Siphoviridae artcle instead.
Nevertheless, thanks for the valuable tip, maybe there are other images at EurekAlert with comparable Usage Restrictions that we should have if possible, so it may be worth asking for them. :-)

Image upload

Hi,

I would like to add an image to a Wikipedia page. I did not take the picture but own the rights to it. However, I am not so clued up on the copyrights - what copyrights would I apply to the image. Preferably I would not like others to use it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

SophieStromback (talk) 15:51, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

@SophieStromback: Hi, and welcome. How did you get the rights?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:02, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
"Preferably I would not like others to use it" is not compatible with our goal of providing media that anyone can use for any purpose (as long as they follow the license terms). No license with such restrictions will be allowed here. --rimshottalk 20:43, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
You don't say what language Wikipedia, but I presume English. Nor do you say what the picture is, and its relevance to what Wikipedia article. The English-language Wikipedia makes some allowance for non-free content, but that would not involve Commons (this site) at all, you'd upload directly to en-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 23:08, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi I made some uploads

I made some uploads of images, most of which I believe are ok to use. However, a few might not be. The uploads below might need to be deleted. Sorry for the mess! --Rexmamba (talk) 18:46, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Looking at the link again, pic 3 most definitely needs to be deleted. For the first two, it says "some rights reserved" - I clicked on the link and this is the Category given: Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0). I was under the impression that those were okay. If not, delete please. Again, I apologize. --Rexmamba (talk) 18:50, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

I've deleted the files. Pic 3 was all rights reserved, which obviously isn't a free license. Pic 1 and 2 were restricted to non-commercial use only, which is not free enough for us either. See COM:L for details. --rimshottalk 20:54, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
Okay, so non-commercial use is not to be uploaded? I will remember that. What if I am given permission by the owner of the photo, for example, would that be okay? And if so, what process or steps do I take? Is there a process of some sort? Does he/she have to email Wikipedia? How does it work? Thanks. Rexmamba (talk) 00:26, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
@Rexmamba: Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept such a photo as-is, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their official website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:10, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

How do I see when my question has been answered?

I've been uploading a lot of my own photos to Wikimedia Commons, but I had a question about uploading pictures that were taken by my late parents - I have the copyright, but they're not my own work. I tried asking a question on here, but I really can't work out how to use this help desk! I've posted my question, but I can't see it, and I don't know how to tell if and when someone answers it. I have the "Watch this page" box ticked, but I don't even know how to find the relevant page.

Is there some kind of basic user guide for new contributors, please? (Of course, if someone answers my question here, I may still not see the answer, as I can't work out how to see responses!). — Preceding unsigned comment added by LeicesterChris (talk • contribs) 12:58, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi LeicesterChris, if the "watch this page" box is ticked, you will see changes to this page on your watchlist (the link is in the header menu). The help desk is rather active, so it will appear on your watchlist quite often. When someone mentions your name, like I did, you will also get a big notification in the header area. As to your question: if you're an only child (easiest case!), can speak for the estate or have explicitly inherited the copyrights to these images, you have the right to license them as you wish. We have special license tags for inherited works, e.g. , see Commons:Transfer of copyright for more. --rimshottalk 16:22, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

You are a star, @Rimshot - thank you very much for such clear answers. This has been really helpful! Chris. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LeicesterChris (talk • contribs) 11:31, 22 February 2021‎ (UTC)

I think I need to provide some context here. I teach history, and make use of images from Wikimedia Commons in my presentations - this has been very useful, and I wanted to pay back by contributing a few hundred of my own photos, some of which are of historic interest. I've been using the Upload Wizard but have a lot of very basic questions. I tried the "help desk", but that just takes me to a vast page of questions, many of which are in Russian, which I don't speak. None of them seem to be aimed at beginners. I also tried the "first steps" tour, but that had advice like making sure I tag images in the correct categories using a notation that I assume is HTML - but I don't know HTML, and I have no idea where I'm supposed to put these. I have asked elsewhere on here (but not yet received a response) about whether there's a basic guide for non-techies; I'm sure there are lots of people like me who have some interesting images to share, but aren't web programmers.

I'm even having trouble finding this post that I'm responding to (clicking on the link in the notification email takes me to a page with loads of questions on, not just mine, so I don't really understand how to navigate it), and I see that after Rimshot's very helpful response, someone called Jeff G told me to sign my posts. When I queried that, I got another notification (which seems to have vanished from here), that said: "== Please sign your postings == autotranslate|base=Please sign|1=   — span style="font-size:115%;background:#FFA"User:Jeff G.|Jeff G./span ツsmall sub please Template:Ping|ping or User:Jeff G./talk|" - sorry, Jeff, but I don't speak HTML and have absolutely no idea what that means, so I'm none the wiser!

Wikimedia Commons is a fabulous resource, so it seems a shame if contributing to it is limited to people with strong technical skills in webpage design - some of us would like to contribute, but DON'T have those skills. A really basic beginner's guide for non-techies would be really helpful.

First steps

I've tried asking if there's a basic user guide for new contributors but haven't had a response. I've tried the "first steps" tour, but I couldn't understand it - it seems to be aimed at web designers who have a good understanding of HTML as it's full of advice about the format of tags - but I don't even know where to enter these.

For context, I teach history and make use of Wikimedia Commons for images to use in my presentations, and wanted to pay back by contributing some photos of my own of historical interest. I've uploaded a few using the upload wizard, but I can't get to grips with the basics. The "help desk" is just a vast page with thousands of questions, and not really a help desk.

Some of us have images that we'd like to contribute, but aren't tech wizards or web designers. Is there a basic intro for newbies anywhere, or do you need to be a techie to contribute, in which case I'm out of my depth?

Any pointers in non-technical language would be very useful - I'd like to be able to contribute to this valuable project as I think I have some useful images to share, but if I'm expected to add tags in a particular format to do so, I need an idiot's guide. Telling me I need to add a tag in the form xy z:2 doesn't actually mean anything to me, as I've no idea what it means or how to add it, so I'm looking for some very basic info on getting started.

Thanks for your response, Jeff, I do appreciate you trying to help, but I have already looked at the FAQs, and most of my questions refer to getting help - and that's been way over my head.

I'm used to social media such as Facebook, where I have my own profile where I can post stuff, I can respond to friends on their timeline, and I can send personal messages to have a private conversation. I can't see the equivalents in the help desk. For instance, you responded to me (privately, I assume, although I can't see where to find that other than going to the email where I got the notification and clicking on it). I can't see how to respond to you other than publicly in this thread - there are options to "ping" you and "talk" to you, but they don't seem to do anything, and I've no idea how they work. I also have no idea how to find my previous questions - the help page is just an ever-changing huge list of everyone's questions, and hunting for mine in the middle of them isn't easy.

I have uploaded a few photos so far with the Upload Wizard - that seems OK, except that the help tells me I need to tag them in a category, which involves using a fancy notation with lots of nested square brackets. I don't understand what that notation is, what categories are available, or indeed where I'm supposed to type this strange notation - so I've put uploading on hold for now until I can work out what on earth I'm supposed to be doing.

What I'm really looking for is a very basic guide on how to upload and how to ask for help (the helpdesk and Village Pump are only any use if one already understands how to use the system - and that's the bit I'm not getting at all). The PDF you link to looks useful if I want to edit Wikipedia articles, but I don't want to run before I can walk - at the moment, I just want to get to grips with uploading images in Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia, and that's where I'm getting stuck.

Is there anything available for non-techies? I teach history - my knowledge of programming is limited to a very ancient programming language from the 1960s, and not web programming languages!

@LeicesterChris: Perhaps en:Help:Introduction to editing with Wiki Markup/1 et al and en:Help:Wikitext are more your speed. Yes, I'm afraid square brackets and curly braces are inevitable parts of editing our wikitext markup language, which we share with Wikipedia and many other projects.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:27, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks Jeff - but I'm afraid even that is too high-speed for me! For example, I have uploaded an image I took in 1989 in the Soviet Union (as it then was) of Soviet soldiers marching up and down by Lenin's mausoleum. That's probably of historic interest to someone, and I'm happy to share it. However, I need to put it in a category. I uploaded it using the Upload Wizard, but I'm apparently supposed to put some stuff in square brackets with a category. So my questions are: 1. What categories are available to me? I assume there's a list of them somewhere - is it "soldiers", "Soviet Union", "Lenin", "mausoleum" - what? 2. Assuming I can find the right notation, where do I enter it? The Wiki says I can use "visual editor", whatever that is. Do I use that on the image before uploading it? How? Am I really the first total newbie who has some photos to contribute? I'd have thought there would be a step-by-step guide somewhere to uploading a first photo - this is how you do it, these are the categories, this is how you enter them. I feel with these articles I'm being dropped into an advanced chapter of a programming manual, without understanding the basics!

Signed: Chris Mitchell (LeicesterChris) — Preceding unsigned comment added by LeicesterChris (talk • contribs) 23:35, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

@LeicesterChris: Our category structure starts at Category:Topics and travels down from there to 15 subcategories AKA children, and their children, etc. Parent categories are at the bottom of each page. Looking geographically, Lenin's mausoleum appears to be officially known in English as en:Lenin's Mausoleum (here, it has Category:Lenin Mausoleum). Adding Category:Buildings in Red Square would be overcategorization. Looking temporally, we have Category:Red Square in 1989. Looking at the people, we have Category:Army of the Soviet Union as a starting point. I have taken the liberty of replacing the categories on File:Red Square Lenin's mausoleum 02.jpg in this edit as per the above, as Category:Moscow in the 1980s was not specific enough by location or year, and both Category:Vladimir Lenin and Category:Mausoleums were also not specific enough. Like most users here, I am notified when someone mentions my username User:Jeff G. in a post or writes on my user talk page User talk:Jeff G..   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:22, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Ah, thank you Jeff! So the labels I enter in the Upload Wizard are sufficient, and I don't need to add lines with square brackets and things afterwards? I had been assuming that having uploaded them, I was supposed to go and edit each image (somehow) with mark-up language. Chris.

Signed: Chris Mitchell (LeicesterChris) — Preceding unsigned comment added by LeicesterChris (talk • contribs) 09:17, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

@LeicesterChris: The more of the markup you do yourself, the better, because when you don't it creates work for someone else. If you can find even roughly correct categories, that makes it much easier for someone else to categorize later, but we don't expect beginners on this site to get everything right immediately, just to accept correction & be willing to learn. - Jmabel ! talk 14:47, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your response, Jmabel - so I *do* need to do additional markup. Unfortunately, that's the bit I'm still not understanding. Is there a relationship between labels I add in the Upload Wizard, and the mark-up that I'm supposed to do afterwards, or are they something completely different? I get that I'm supposed to type some stuff in in square brackets somewhere, but I can't see where I'm supposed to enter that in the Upload Wizard. The Upload Wizard lets me add photos, give them a description, a caption, a location, and add some labels (which I seem to have to do twice for some reason - once before it's published, and then I have to add more labels after it's published). So far, so good - but not a square bracket in sight! So what's the mark-up that I need to do afterwards (the bits in square brackets), and where do I put that in the Upload Wizard? Or do I need to somehow mark up my images *before* I upload them? It's not a question of me getting everything right, at the moment I feel as though I'm getting nothing at all right as I really don't know where to start! Also, every time I post here I get an automated email telling me that I must sign my posts, even though I'm now careful to sign off with both my real name and Username.

@LeicesterChris: You can't use four tildes in a row like COM:SIGN says?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:05, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi, Jeff - the issue I was having was a lot more basic than that, as it was one of very basic terminology as I haven't come to Wikimedia Commons via a basic knowledge of Wikipedia editing, I've come to Wikimedia Commons as a complete newbie. Until last night, I didn't realise that Wikimedia Commons was closely related to Wikipedia and that there's a symbiotic relationship between the two - I thought "wiki" just meant the information was collaborative and built from the bottom up by the users. Thus, I didn't understand what "a post" means - I'm used to a post being a single email or a Facebook post or reply; in Wikimedia I was confused by the fact that I seem to be editing a huge page, so I'm "editing" rather than "posting". After a lot of searching on Google, I found quite a few other newcomers with exactly the same problem - one of them said every time he asked a question, people tried to help but it just sounded like Klingon to him - and that's the position I was in! I was like the person asking how to write "Wishing you a happy birthday" in German in a birthday card, and the responder discussing whether "wishing" is a present tense or a gerund, and giving me a link to a German grammar blog. The responses were a level above my very basic question, and so although I appreciated the effort, I couldn't make sense of them.

Last night, however, I went on to the live chat room for Wikimedia Commons, and I'm extremely grateful to User:Acagastya, who was extremely helpful and helped me work through a number of examples by trying things out on their user page, and breaking things down for me. Thank you so much, Acagastya! It does now make sense, they showed me how to use markup, the difference between categories and markup as links, how to sign, what the User Talk page is and how to use it, and how to ping. Acagastya also pointed out that the confusion is because most people only come to Wikimedia Commons after they've had some experience in Wikipedia (and demonstrated the relationship between them), and so a basic level of Wikipedia editing does tend to be assumed. I had indeed been getting confused why people were linking to PDFs about Wikipedia when I was asking about Wikimedia Commons, but now I understand why.

So thank you to everyone who's responded, and especially to Acagastya who spent so much time helping me in a live setting - I think I've finally got there! --LeicesterChris (talk) 07:49, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

  1. At least several of these appeared on other websites before they were ever on Commons.
  2. You don't appear to have engaged with any of the the people who nominated these for deletion or deleted these. I suggest you pick one of these images and do just that. - Jmabel ! talk 00:48, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Why is my own work listed for speedy deletion?

I've taken a picture of a motorcycle, posted it on flickr.com then on a Web forum and Wikimedia Commons, all under the same user name.

See https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harley_Davidson_Fat_Boy_2018_FLFBS.jpg

A few years later, I'm told it will go through "speedy deletion" because of that.

I'm trying to do what I need to do to avoid this, but this is pure nonsense.

The amount of paperwork involved is painful, really!

I've removed the speedy deletion thingie in the page.

I've submitted a regular deletion instead... to avoid deletion!

I hope it's the right thing to do, but I'm not sure.

Can anyone confirm?

Will I have to go through the same process for all the pictures that I have posted here and on other Web properties? I'd rather delete all my pictures right away, frankly. I have the same issue with https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harley_Davidson_Softail_Slim_2018.jpg .

On March 25 (April 7), 1917, in the city of Simferopol, at a general meeting of Muslims of Crimea, the Provisional Muslim Executive Committee (Musispolkom) was formed, the leaders of which formed the core of the Crimean Tatar National Party (Milli Firka) created in July 1917. Its symbol was the sky-blue flag ("kok-bairak"), which personified the belonging of the Crimean Tatars to the Turkic peoples (the color of the Turks is considered to be sky blue - the color of the eternal sky of the Turkic god Tengri). Simultaneously with the blue flag, the tamga of the Girey family of the XII-XIII centuries ("tarak tamgas") was also widespread [11]

Dear Sir/Madame, I would like to upload pictures with the explicit permission of the owner of the pictures which is the company I am editing the history of at Wikipedia. How do I get through the upload process? There are only the options: I own the picture - here I can tick a box but clearly I did not take the pictures and do not own their rights. As the company owns the pictures, the other two options are not right either. Please, advise how to upload the pictures. Thank you in advance for your answer. Shouldn't have transferred from Wikipedia

Hi, I transferred File:Korom.jpg to Commons (rather absent-mindedly) while patrolling random ENwiki pages. I should have checked whether it had a source before, but I neglected to. As there is no source it will obviously be deleted. But will I receive any kind of penalty for having done this? Wodgester (talk) 10:03, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Is this flickr photo ok to upload? The license Cc‑by‑sa‑2.0 is fine, and I assume that as a radio, even a novelty one, it has an intrinsic utilitarian function. But is the Spice Girls logo a copyright issue? Bennv3771 (talk) 07:00, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

--Taktaal (talk) 21:13, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Unable to find photo

Hi, I've been a Wikipedia editor for almost a year now. I'm very impressed by the multitude of public domain images included there, because since I took up this article named Yu Wensheng, I've looked through so many places on the internet but still can't find any public domain image for Yu Wensheng.

Is there particular platform to go to when contributors look for free images to upload to WikiCommons? If there is not, then how did WikiCommons get so many free-license photos that are currently in use on Wikipedia, given that such photos are so hard to find on the internet? Thanks, Thomas Meng (talk) 04:56, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Such images my not simply exist. Ruslik (talk) 14:43, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
Typically the way to go from here is to either contact the person and see if you can get an image from them, or look at media where pictures of the person have appeared in (magazines or similar) and try to contact the photographers of these to see if they're willing to license a picture under CC --Taktaal (talk) 21:11, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Rotation of an Ilka Gedo painting 180 degrees so that it looks OK

Dear Sirs or Madams

I wanted to rotate this picture 180 degrees, so that it stands in the righ direction

https://mek.oszk.hu/kiallitas/gedo_ilka/galleries/oilpaintings/images/Gedo_Ilka_059.jpg

The picture is called Domed Rose Garden. However, the dome is turned upside down. I wanted to fix this.

I rotated the original file and saved it under a different file name.

Then I opened the upload wizzard uploaded the picture, and had a look at the file. It turned back to the original state. Whatever I did, I was not able to go on with the upload, as the picture always reverted to its original (WRONG) directionn.

I would very much apprerciate your help

Uploading photos

In January I (pft45) was able to upload a photo (Grazeley 01) to the "Pillboxes in Berkshire" category. I have since been able to upload another photo (Mortimer 01) to the system, but I am unable to get this onto the category page. @Pft45: Convenience links:
If you want to place File:Mortimer 01.jpg in Category:Pillboxes in Berkshire, then edit the file page for File:Mortimer 01.jpg, and at the bottom write "". Multiple independent categories are welcome (e.g. something about the date of the photo, or the make of your camera), one to a line at the bottom of the page. - Jmabel ! talk 18:51, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Photo deletion courtesy request

Just wondering if anyone has had issues getting photos of themselves taken down. There's a photo from a private event I was at years ago, and I only asked that the cropped version displaying just my face be removed. I got hit with a 5-6 responses ranging from "provide another photo" to "you asked for it". It's descended into silliness at this point. I'm annoyed, and confused. Also feels like a violation.

I get that it may be within the legal parameters to do this, although I'll find out more specifics tomorrow, but if the person whose face is being displayed wants it removed, shouldn't they have some say?

Anyway just wondering if anyone's run into this issue. I'm new to the site and I'm sure I'll hear from some of the users related to the photo in question after I post this. Honestly just looking for a bit of guidance. I'm also going to contact the org that held the event (of which I'm a member), mostly because I'm so frustrated at this point. I imagine that's probably the easiest way. TIA — Preceding unsigned comment added by Imissdisco (talk • contribs) 19:10, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

People asked you to contact OTRS on https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/OTRS to actually establish your identity. This is a step that you'd pretty much have to take, otherwise this can't really work because you might really be anybody. But even then this would likely still be difficult. Only very few countries have privacy rights so strict that the subject of a picture can restrict the usage of their picture, and Canada isn't one of them. The organization that made the picture can't really help you either. During the upload they published the image under CC which means they willingly gave up their rights to restrict redistribution. So they can't make a copyright claim or something similar --Taktaal (talk) 21:08, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
Part of our job is to function as a photostore for an encyclopedia and a newspaper. If you called into the offices of an newspaper or encyclopedia, and demanded they remove your photo from their archives, I don't suspect they would be nearly so friendly.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:31, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Upload photo of author

Hi Wikipedia Help Desk I recently created the entry about the New York Times bestseller author Namina Forna. When it was approved by admin I contacted the author's publisher to ensure, that the facts were in fact correct. All is good, as it is (thankfully). But they also sent me a photo of the author with the name of the photographer. How do we go about that? Can I upload/create a photo, that I myself haven't taken? Please advise!

Cheers, -- Kmilling (talk) 08:51, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

  • Who owns the copyright of the photo? Is it still with the photographer, or has it been transferred to the publisher? What license is the copyright-onwer offering for the photo? @Kmilling: — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmabel (talk • contribs) 15:07, 25 February 2021‎ (UTC)
    • The photographer is Melanie D’Andrea, who has relinquished the rights to this particular photo (full license) to the publisher/author (Penguin Random House/Namina Forna), who has mailed me full permission to for Wikipedia use. -- Cheers, Kmilling (talk) 15:10, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
      • @Kmilling: If all you have is "permission… for Wikipedia use" that wouldn't involve Commons. That would just be non-free use on [I presume] the English-language Wikipedia. Commons can only accept files that are free-licensed or in the public domain. See also COM:OTRS, but if it isn't free-licensed or in the public domain then that is moot in this case. - Jmabel ! talk 00:39, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
        • The publisher and the author herself uses this as official press photo everywhere. When I said "use for Wikipedia" it is because that's what they asked me to use. The reason I ask Commons is, that I wanted to be sure about the procedure. Please advise! -- Cheers, Kmilling (talk) 17:27, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
@Kmilling: Hi, and welcome. Please have the photographer and publisher send permission for the photo directly via OTRS with a COM:L compliant license and COM:CONSENT verbiage confirming that they understand what they are agreeing to, with a carbon copy to you. If copyright was transferred, please send the copyright transfer paperwork as required by US law.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:36, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Hi there :) - I've already written OTRS and the reply states more or less the same. I've forwarded the Wiki-commons reply to the author and publisher, asking them to write Wiki-commons directly. I rest my case. I fully understand the precautions. I never realized, however, that it would be this complicated. -- Cheers and thanks for your help and advice, Kmilling (talk) 10:40, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Uploading a large video file

I am trying to upload a webm file with 4k resolution, 50 fps, a size of 3.8 GiB (4 060 232 599 bytes, so still within what is documented at COM:MAXSIZE). I tried UploadWizard several times now, and it always gives an error about "server not responding in time". Now I tried uploading it using User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js, which ended this way:

13996: finalize/7330> Still waiting for server to rebuild uploaded file
14001: finalize/7330> Still waiting for server to rebuild uploaded file
14006: finalize/7330> Still waiting for server to rebuild uploaded file
14011: finalize/7330> Still waiting for server to rebuild uploaded file
14015: finalize/7330> Still waiting for server to rebuild uploaded file
14020: finalize/7330> Still waiting for server to rebuild uploaded file
14025: finalize/7330> Still waiting for server to rebuild uploaded file
14030: FAILED: stashfailed: Internal error: Server failed to store temporary file.

Since it always takes several hours to even finish the upload and get to this point, this is very frustrating. Is there another good way to do this, maybe one that outputs better debug information? The file comes from YouTube, but I'm uploading it from my own device (downloaded with youtube-dl) because video2commons always gave errors about too many connections opened from its server. Tokfo (talk) 11:58, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

@Tokfo: Have you reviewed User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js#Troubleshooting?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:48, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: The only part of it that seems applicable to my situation is reviewing Special:UploadStash. There, I do see several webm files (currently 7, probably corresponding to the number of times I tried uploading). I can click on them; for some of them, I get an error "Internal Server Error. Cannot serve a file larger than 1048576 bytes." For others, I get a webm file that only plays the first split-second of the video file I tried uploading, but at the same time displays a video length of 18:36 in the bottom toolbar, which corresponds exactly to the length of the video I'm trying to upload. So it seems that the video was only partially uploaded.
If I click on "further information", I can see a button that would allow me to publish; however, none of the attempts seem to have properly ended up on the server: one displays a size of 173 MiB but that seems to be an earlier video that I successfully uploaded with UploadWizard. Two of the others display either a size of 5 MiB with 3840x2160px, the remaining four of 1 MiB with 0x0px. So it doesn't look like any of them correspond to the full video file I'm trying to upload.
Perhaps it is interesting that the browser I'm using is Firefox 84.0.1 on Manjaro Linux (from the repositories). I have not yet tried whether either UploadWizard or bigChunkedUpload works with Chromium. I might do that tomorrow. I am no longer sure what my chunk size was, but might select a relatively large one on my next attempt; I think I selected a relatively small one on my attempt with bigChunkedUpload, My chunk size on my attempt with bigChunkedUpload was 541 KiB (found that I still had the tab open); is that too small for this file size? UploadWizard didn't work any better and I don't know its chunk size. Tokfo (talk) 19:11, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
@Tokfo: When I did the upload I referred to above 06:41, 17 February 2021 (UTC), I used the default 4096 KiB AKA 4.096 MiB chunk size. I have a theory that some overprotective developer capped uploads at 4GiB, rather than the 4,294,967,296 bytes (4GB) you saw earlier at COM:MAXSIZE, but I can't see the gerrit links at present. Per phab:T116514, "there is a maxFileSizeInternal, which currently is 4294967296 Bytes and hard coded in FileBackendStore.php". That is 4 GB. I suppose you could test my theory by dropping 2% quality to under 4 GiB and spending another 3.9 hours trying. There is overhead to consider during upload and rebuilding, so if your connection is stable, rather than ~7,400 541 KiB chunks, you might want to consider ~200 20,480 KiB chunks (or as close as you can get to that max chunk size). You should still get 100 visual cues per chunk (every 1%), more frequently than one per second.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:40, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your help. The upload of yours that you're referring to seems to be ~160 MB, which is a lot smaller than what I'm trying to do; a few days ago I managed >350 MB with UploadWizard, so in principle UploadWizard works for me. I restarted it with a chunk size of 18371 KiB and hope this works better. I will probably see in about an hour whether it did. (I am still doing this in Firefox though. In Chromium, the script doesn't seem to work at all, it directs me to a browser error page the moment I select a file.) Tokfo (talk) 20:55, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
I am not sure whether this is good news or bad news, but I got a different error message than before:
07697: finalize/216> Still waiting for server to rebuild uploaded file
07702: finalize/216> Still waiting for server to rebuild uploaded file
07707: finalize/216> Still waiting for server to rebuild uploaded file
07712: finalize/216> Still waiting for server to rebuild uploaded file

07723: FAILED: stashfailed: Could not store upload in the stash (UploadStashFileException): "An unknown error occurred in storage backend "local-swift-codfw".".
Could this work better if I tried unchecking "use stash and async"? The description says it is recommended to check it for large videos, which is exactly what I'm uploading, so it would seem wrong to uncheck it. Tomorrow I will also try the very maximum chunk size. Tokfo (talk) 22:10, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
@Tokfo: Maybe.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:57, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

07110: FAILED: internal_api_error_DBQueryError: [YDQPyDOFhU36SsQM4umsigAAAII] Caught exception of type Wikimedia\Rdbms\DBQueryError

I will tomorrow make one more attempt with that chunk size with stash and async. If that does not work, I am going to try splitting the video and uploading each part separately; it is only a compilation of footage anyway, so that won't detract from its value very much. I find it kind of sad that these kinds of issues are still something contributors have to deal with in 2021; I have a tiny bit of technical expertise, but what would people do who don't? Tokfo (talk) 20:20, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

If readers from the future (who find this thread when searching for solutions for their own chunked upload problems) care, the attempt with maximum chunk size with stash and async didn't work either; same error as the above "local-swift-codfw". Tokfo (talk) 21:47, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
