Users which do have "SVG Igen"-script enabled via

importScript("User:Perhelion/simpleSVGcheck.js");

or

importScript("User:Sarang/simpleSVGcheck.js");

on their Special:MyPage/common.js, and run SVG Igen on https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AHannibal_promotional_logo.svg&action=edit&simpleSVGcheck=0 get a preview of removed structured data, however those are imho not actually removed when saving. (They should not get removed, how to fix the preview?)

I neither know enough of *.js nor of how structured data is saved, maybe someone can point us where to ask or even tell us how to repair.

We are being asked by wikimedia to permit the use of our logo in a wikipedia article about our organization. We are referred to the commons which says by permitting its use we authorize others to use/sell and do other things with our logo. That is not our intent. It is a graphic that is appropriate for our website, but not for others to use as their property. Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SGS06 (talk • contribs) 14:40, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

  • @SGS06: My advice? Tell them you are perfectly happy to have it used on a fair-use basis for articles about your company in languages where that is allowed but, no, you are not interested in free-licensing your logo, so it can't go on Commons.
  • FWIW, do understand, though, that copyright and trademark are two totally different matters. I don't know your logo (you didn't link a URL) but unless it really involves significant artwork, you might want to free-license it in terms of copyright, while being specific about retaining trademark. We (Commons) have a template Trademarked for just that sort of thing. See, for example, File:UNESCO flag.png. - Jmabel ! talk 17:34, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

can't upload a .png file in an article

Hello everyone,

I am trying to upload the plot of a function for a Wikipedia article, but I always get an error message. Note that this plot and the image have been created by me and by my own program.

What would be the solution ?

Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in India

Dear Sir, I have uploaded 17 image files for participating in 'Wiki Loves Monuments in India' photographic competition. However only 2 uploads only categorized as 'This image was uploaded as part of Wiki Loves Monuments 2021.". I have added the category 'Images from Wiki loves Monuments 2021 in India' and Wiki loves Monuments 2021 in India' to the remaining 15 of my uploads. I request that all of my 17 uploads may be categoried as 'This image was uploaded as part of Wiki Loves Monuments 2021.' so that they appear in all of my uploads. I request needful so that all my 17 uploads may be included for the 'Wiki loves Monuments 2021 in India' Photographic contest.(files uploaded from Sep 1,2021 to Sep 30,2021). Thanking you. Merge items with complementary information

Two items for the same scientists currently exist: Q90783507 and Q106949981. One has information from orcid, the other has a photograph and other information. Could someone merge them please? Shepherd's Grove image is incorrect.

The wikipedia commons image for Shepherd's Grove Church in Irvine at:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shepherd%27s_Grove_-_Irvine,_California.jpg

The cross streets of Lewis and Garden Grove Blvd. is a residential area at this intersection.

The correct property for Shepherd's Grove Church in Irvine where the Crystal Cathedral's former congregation now resides is here:

I've added a note to the Commons description as well as an image caption in English Wikipedia article to clarify that the image is of the former church building. If this is still incorrect, you can also directly raise the issue at the article talk page en:Talk:Shepherd's Grove, or be bold and edit the article yourself. --Paul_012 (talk) 10:50, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

Tool to check EXIF metadata for a large number of images?

Is there a tool that can be used to check EXIF metadata for a large number of images? I'm looking at photos from a certain Panoramio user (Special:Search/"Thaweesak Churasri"), and it seems that their uploads consisted of a mix of their own work taken with a few certain cameras, and copyvios of works taken from elsewhere which have missing or inconsistent metadata. It's going to be quite a pain if these 700+ images will have to be checked manually, one by one. --Paul_012 (talk) 10:56, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

VisualFileChange (Special:Preferences -> Gadgets -> Maintenance tools) allows you to perform a batch task on search result. Select "Advanced Select Files" -> Model to match a specific camera model (case sensitive). MKFI (talk) 13:15, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! That was pretty much what I needed. --Paul_012 (talk) 17:11, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

The message appears to be generated by the default Special:UploadWizard. It has a link to Commons:Upload Wizard feedback which has gone inactive; it seems suggestions to the interface will have to be filed as a bug report on Phabricator. Maybe what's needed isn't a change to the dialog box itself though. File:Licensing tutorial en.svg, which is the tutorial image used there, doesn't mention file types, and providing links to instructional pages somewhere would be useful. Not quite sure where this should brought up though. --Paul_012 (talk) 17:21, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

Wrongly captioned London image

What's the procedure for a wrongly captioned image? File:Mark Lane, London EC3 - geograph.org.uk - 1077513.jpg actually shows nearby Seething Lane which runs parallel to it in the City of London (I worked in Mark Lane for 20 years, so I'm pretty certain). Do I just make a note on the talk page, or is there more radical action? Alansplodge (talk) 23:04, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

@Alansplodge: If you're certain you're right you can just edit the page to correct the description. Since the file name is also wrong, you'll probably also want to request that the file be renamed either by using the "Move" option in the "More" menu or by adding the Rename template. The one thing you should leave alone is the title in the credit line (labelled "Attribution"). That's required by the licence, so we generally only change it if the title gets changed on Geograph. You can suggest that the title on Geograph be updated using the "Suggest an update to this image" link on the photo page, but if you don't then I'll probably do it when I notice the file being renamed. --bjh21 (talk) 23:22, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

Wrong image used in multiple non-English and sister-Wikipedia projects

This image(file link) is wrongly being used in multiple non-English Wikipedia and it's sister projects as an image of Radha. I found the original source of this painting (website link) in which there is no mention that this is the painting of Radha. After a discussion in English Wikipedia (talk page link)this image was removed from the article. But still many non-English Wikipedia use this image in their articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eevee01 (talk • contribs) 11:09, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

That image is also on the Wikidata page. Replacing it by another image will probably solve a part of the problem. Wouter (talk) 11:52, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Which image is this about? You only copied the categories, the image name is at the top of the page. The license rules should be stated right on the image page. From the categories, I can see that this is probably a CC-by-SA-license, this means that you must give credit and state the license (). --rimshottalk 18:20, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
@Sparrowhedgerow: I presume you're referring to File:Coffret aux saintes huiles, étain - Église de Thorigné-en-Charnie.jpg, since that's the only file with those categories. The author, Symac, was active on Commons this year, and on French Wikipedia today, so it should be possible to contact them. Failing that, you can still use the picture under its Creative Commons licence. There's a summary here and the full details here, but the critical parts are that you must provide a link to the licence text (e.g. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/legalcode), and the name of the author (here "User:Symac/Symac / Sylvain Machefert"). --bjh21 (talk) 22:41, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

How to fill out the form on the Upload Wizard

I have a question about uploading to Wikimedia Commons. The person doing the uploading will be uploading two things. First are photographs of paintings painted by her mother, an artist. The mother is dead, so the daughter owns the copyright and has obtained permission from the person who photographed the paintings. Can you tell me how to fill out the Upload Wizard form: Is the source the photographer and the author the painter? And then which Creative Commons license is the right one? I don’t understand the differences. The daughter is fine with sharing the work, even for modification. The second item is a photograph of the artist taken by a newspaper, which has given permission to use it. Same questions. Thanks so much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SlowForm (talk • contribs) 22:06, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

  • @SlowForm: Some of this may not readily be done with the Upload Wizard, and I'm guessing that if you had enough expertise not to use the Wizard at all, you wouldn't be asking this sort of question, so my suggestion is, in general, get as close as you can with the Wizard & then expect you may have to do some editing on the uploaded file.
  • For the photos of the mother's art: I'd recommend . In particular, that requires that the images be attributed, which I'm guessing is desired in this case. Yes, the mother/painter is the author. (This assumes that the images just show the painting as such, not--for example--a frame, or a room with the painting hanging on the wall. Those cases are more complicated, let me know if you need that.) I would give source as something like "Image provided by User:EXAMPLE, daughter of the artist", or if she prefers "Image provided by actual name, daughter of the artist". By the way, it still might be necessary to go through the COM:VRT process so that the daughter can vouch more specifically for being the artist's heir. This is especially the case if the account uses a pseudonym.
  • The newspaper ones are trickier. "Has given permission to use it" isn't enough. They need to give a specific license. This can either be done via the COM:VRT process or having the copyright-holder indicate the license on a web page that is clearly under their control.
  • Also, please see COM:SIGN. - Jmabel ! talk 01:57, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

Thank you so much. I have uploaded an image using the Wizard and your suggestions, using Cc-by-sa-4.0, but I don't know how to edit it to use the "heirs" version of the license. Yes, I am a newbie, so all help is appreciated. SlowForm (talk) 00:24, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

Oops, I think I figured it out. Gradually getting into it. One more question: it doesn't seem to be searching by the author/artist. Is there a way I specify search terms? Thanks again. SlowForm (talk) 00:58, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

  • @SlowForm: "it doesn't seem to be searching by the author/artist" => not sure exactly what you mean, could you be more specific what you are doing that isn't working? (There is more than one search here, and all sorts of other possible variables involved.) - Jmabel ! talk 16:19, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

What I mean is that when I enter "Mary Perry Stone" (the author of the painting) in the search field at the top right of a Wikimedia Commons Page ("Search Wikimedia Commons") as if I were any user, the image I uploaded does not come up. Thanks, SlowForm (talk) 23:31, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

When I click on this link, a box pops up with some details of URLs and attribution, and then a list of available resolutions, in this case "64px | 128px | 256px | 512px | 1024px | Full resolution". When I click on one of these, the image is displayed at that resolution in my browser but apparently is NOT downloaded. To actually download it, I then need to right-click on the image and select "save image", which is just a browser function and nothing to do with Wiki, and could apparently equally well be done without any recourse to this so-called "Download" feature. While right-clicking and saving is not exactly onerous, is this "Download" feature working as it's supposed to? Shouldn't a link labelled "Download" actually, er, download the file? Or is there some aspect to this that I am misunderstanding? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 10:08, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

I see, thanks. Personally I think it is confusing. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:22, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
FWIW the download button/menu in the Media Viewer does what it says: it goes to a blank page from which the image is downloaded without being displayed. No idea why the behaviours are different.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:40, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
@ITookSomePhotos: Hi, and welcome. You should be able to right click (or long tap) on the "Original file" link, or any "Date/Time" link in the "File history" section, of any file description page to save such link as a file using your browser. You may also left click (or tap) on such a link (or use the "File URL" field from the "Download" link) to display the file full-sized in your browser, possibly crash your browser if the file is too large, and if not save as a file from there.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:17, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

Special user right to upload MP3 files

Hello all,

I just saw there is a whole bunch of large and big MP3 files which are very tough to convert and then upload to Commons (basically need a pro version of the converter). So is there any special user right that will help me from this situation? Warm Regards, --Contributers2020Talk to me here 08:52, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

@Contributers2020: Autopatrol is the easiest to enter user group which allows MP3 uploads, bypassing Special:AbuseFilter/192, MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning-mp3, and the need to reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 08:54, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

@Dfedra: I don’t see why not, unless there are explicit restrictions in the software‘s ToU or licensing documentation, or the output includes images from non-US-government sources (which doesn’t seem likely in this case). That said, the file page should include a link to the program (probably in the Source info field), and the more information you can provide about your inputs the better. (Nothing to do with copyright, but some editors might have en:WP:OR concerns, which can be addressed by demonstrating that the calculations are a routine application of accepted methods.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:23, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

Help with "Lua error"

Please see Category:Stolp Island I do not know how to address this. Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 17:39, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

@Krok6kola: I think it's an unhelpful way of saying that the Object location template is misformatted. Specifically, when JarektBot removed the co-ordinates from it back in 2007 2017, it should have marked the remaining attributes with attributes= or 3= to stop them being interpreted as co-ordinates themselves. Uploading historic photos

Hello, I have pictures of a team photo from 1918 and 1921 that I am attempting to add to the appropriate Wikipedia page. These photographs are owned by my mother, taken on my iPhone. Is there a way to either receive permission or get them added appropriately? Difficult to obtain explicit copyright permission from old photographs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kpkc92 (talk • contribs) 23:10, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

  • @Kpkc92: I assume the mention of the iPhone here is just as a copying device, and has nothing to do with the matter (faithful reproduction of a 2-dimensional image does not create any new copyrightable intellectual property).
  • Something from 1918 or 1921 could very well still be copyrighted. What country were the photos taken in? This question seems to be the first edit from this account, so I have no context to make a guess. - Jmabel ! talk 01:33, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
  • @Kpkc92 The information is contradicting. The photograph is taken from your phone, but copyright is with your mother? And is the copyright renewed by your mother? If not, then the picture is very well in public domain at United States with the template PD-US-expired. -- Contributers2020Talk to me here 05:33, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Category naming

Looking at Category:Sandown, New Hampshire and Category:Sandown (which refers to a place on the Isle of Wight), why is "New Hampshire" specified in the first case but "Isle of Wight" not specified in the second? Originally I imagined that a category, let's say "Sandown", could exist with the same name in multiple positions in the category hierarchy, let's say under "Places in New Hampshire" and "Places on the Isle of Wight", but now I understand that this is impossible. In which case, is Category:Sandown a category naming error -- just arbitrarily the first one that was created, and someone didn't bother to specify where it was? Should Category:Sandown be renamed to Category:Sandown, Isle of Wight, and, if so, is there a tool that will do this? When I try Special:MovePage/Category:Sandown it says "Please note that only the page will be moved and any pages in the old category will not be recategorized into the new one." which is clearly no use as there are hundreds. At Commons:Rename_a_category I did find reference to a "bot", but at User_talk:CommonsDelinker/commands#Category_moves it says "Updating references to the new category name is the duty of the requester. Update all references to the new category name where needed. This part of the task is not automated" so whatever use is that? Isn't that exactly what one WOULD expect the bot to do?? Alternatively, any other suggestions? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:32, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

  •  Comment I suggest starting a discussion on the talk page for Category:Sandown before any move. I see that Commons categories match usage on en:Wikipedia as well; Sandown and Sandown, New Hampshire. From the articles, I see that the one in New Hampshire was named after the one on Isle of Wight, and further that the Sandown on Isle of Wight is much older and more than twice as populous, so it being the main topic doesn't seem random. (Also note that common practice is putting the state name after town/city name for USA places, with exceptions for particularly significant cities with unique unambiguous names.) Perhaps it might be a good idea to just put a hatnote at the top of Category:Sandown with links to other places of that name, similar to Sandown (disambiguation). Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:59, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
I see, thanks. If there is a general principle that the "main" instance of something, be it a place or whatever, does not need qualifying in the category name, while other instances do, then that's fine. I have no particular desire to press for a name change in the "Sandown" case, though I would be interested to know anyway whether there is a sensible way to rename a category without the necessity to make hundreds of manual changes that effectively makes the task infeasible for ordinary users. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 18:19, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
@ITookSomePhotos: For a category like Category:Sandown with only a few hundred files, Commons:Cat-a-lot can be used to move them in only a few minutes. Cat-a-lot doesn't help with subcategories, though, so you'd still need to move them by hand. Regarding CommonsDelinker, I suspect that the discussion of "references" doesn't mean files that are in the category, but rather other links to it (like the ones in this paragraph). That would explain the reference to "what links here". --bjh21 (talk) 23:04, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

  • @Dr.Tharmalingam Tharesanan: I don't see any contributions from this account on any of the Wikipedias. Are you talking about the English-language Wikipedia? In general you should not be writing about yourself there. Have you read en:WP:COI? If not, I recommend you do.
  • From your description, I'm guessing that you tried to upload a small photo with no EXIF information as a cross-wiki upload. Usually when people do that, they are uploading a copyright violation. If you do the upload entirely here on Commons, for example using Commons:Upload Wizard, that should not trigger. However, be aware that if someone else took a photo of you, then the photographer, not you, owns the copyright. They need to give permission, either by uploading and licensing the image themselves on their account, by publishing it elsewhere and explicitly granting the relevant license, or by the COM:VRT process. - Jmabel ! talk 14:29, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
@Dr.Tharmalingam Tharesanan: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it as-is, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:43, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Problem with batch upload tools?

Could there be a general problem with batch upload tools, e.g. them being disallowed? My Vicuna Uploader stopped working ~2 weeks ago because it could not login to Commons (while I can login normally via web browser). I tried Commonist instead, but it stopped working today (it reports 100% files uploaded, but then stalls upon updating gallery, while no files were really uploaded). I tried Pattypan, and this cannot log in either. --JiriMatejicek (talk) 18:40, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Looks like all Java based tools share a common library, which fell foul of a mediawiki software update. See the German thread Commons:Forum#Problem beim Hochladen mit Commonist for some technical details. Also https://github.com/ritschwumm/commonist/issues/25 and https://github.com/ritschwumm/commonist/issues/26 Agathoclea (talk) 18:56, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
This apparently affects a lot of Commons users. Could it be solved at the MediaWiki end? Instead of a number of tools programmers having to adapt their programs, a central solution might be better. --JiriMatejicek (talk) 06:51, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

What is SDC?

When uploading an image, it has automatically added numerous categories about missing SDC something. What does it mean? For example: missing SDC copyright license / missing SDC source of file / missing SDC creator / missing SDC inception / etc. What is needed to be done? What is this SDC?--MrPanyGoff 10:41, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

@MrPanyGoff: This refers to the Structured data tab of the file page that links to the Wikidata database. Don't worry about this since it is not essential, and a bot will eventually add most of the missing items. De728631 (talk) 10:48, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Fear for after effects of being vaccinated

Good day. My name is Isa Phiri. Am a Zimbabwean by birth and am living in Zimbabwe. I have a question and aI feel like ask how you take it . Firstly am a financially challenged man who can not afford standard health checkups so as now I think I need information on my situation.

I got vaccinated recently with Sinopham , both first and second doses, but since then am feeling strange. From the day I was vaccinated , on the 8th of Sep , it took me about 4 or 5 days without using my left side. My left side was very week then that I couldnt do mu h work with it. It then stopped for about 2 weeks. Immediately before my second dose I began feeling the same way till now. During evening I feel like Ive been carrying something heavy from my left side. Should this be a reason to be scared because now I regrate being vaccinated — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 77.246.55.165 (talk) 12:17, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

@Ruslik0: I still don't understand, does it mean that the images will be deleted or not? can I use them in an article?-JSeb05 (talk) 20:45, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
Good question, I don't think Ruslik0 answered it. That provision is in the copyright rules guidelines for Kenya. That is unusual compared to copyright laws in many other countries. The photos would generally be fine for other countries, but item "d" in that Kenyan provision possibly may be relevant, and Commons policy is to be in harmony with country of origin copyrights. Does anyone have more details on how this is applied in Keyna? -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 00:46, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
@Infrogmation: On the page "Paying Public Domain" in which it deals with cultural expressions (Where this rule is mentioned in Kenya) it says "When a work is in the public domain, the existence of a paying public domain regime may be seen as a "non-copyright restriction" which does not prevent the work from being uploaded to Commons, but should be respected by users of the work. "So the images can stay on Wikimedia Commons? -JSeb05 (talk) 01:39, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
Hm, curious that the clause was in Commons page on copyright rules of Kenya if it is a "non-copyright restriction". I *think* those are OK for Commons, but I suppose the possibility remains that it might be challenged in the future if more information on Kenyan law suggests a specific problem. I see you uploaded them in good faith and with due diligence, thank you. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:32, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

Collegiate soccer pictures

I went to my local university's soccer game and took some pictures. Some players are already notable (in Wikipedia's sense) and I'll be sticking their pictures in their respective articles. Others are not notable yet, but may be notable in the future. Then I've got some action shots. Should I upload them all, or just the notable ones for now? If well photographed and properly described & categorized, I'd think the photos without "notable" players would be fine. Commons is for photos for articles but also supplemental material giving broader illustration of a topic. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 00:37, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

I'd say "maid costume" is someone dressing as a version of a maid who is not a maid. For actual maid in standard clothing, perhaps "maid uniform" might be better? I wanted to ask somewhere if someone can work with the PNG file to make it at the same quality as the other images but I don't know if a place like this exists. I have no skills in image manipulation myself. - Klein Muçi (talk) 15:11, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

@Klein Muçi: Hi, and welcome. We use the same wikitext here, so those first two files are File:Wikipedia Administrator.svg (edited by ANGELUS) and File:Admin mop-no.png (edited by Kandy Talbot). File:Dialog-error.svg could help, one of those users could help, or you could use File:Not Admin.svg now. Filed deleted despite adding source

To whom it may concern,

I've undertaken the painstaking process of providing a source for each of the the documents that I uploaded. These documents, however were all deleted unceremoniously without even giving any heads up. Can someone assist me to get these files up and running? Thanks.

Extended content

The files deleted were as follows:

--Trwyr Tywyllwch (talk) 22:11, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

@Trwyr Tywyllwch: Hi, and welcome. If the sources were free enough for us, please document them above. See also COM:DW.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:25, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: , thanks for the response! "Document above" meaning what exactly? I had already provided documentation - if you revert the deletes, you will see that all were properly cited to the best of my knowledge, in accordance with both COM:L & COM:DW. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trwyr Tywyllwch (talk • contribs) 20:00, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
@Ellin Beltz: I looked at a few of these, and they looked fine to me. Can you explain what you think is wrong with them? - Jmabel ! talk 23:24, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: : The licenses don't match the sources. They're all claimed as own work, usually 4.0 when the sources have different authors and licenses. I do not mind if you revert the deletions. I thought long and hard about it, but really do not see how these could all be claimed as own work when they're all obviously copies of other pictures with translations added. I don't think translating the names of the Elements is sufficient to add a new copyright, etc. Again, I am not hostile to restoring these, but I think the uploader needs to help us out with accurate author/date and license on all of them. Ellin Beltz (talk) 04:53, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
@Trwyr Tywyllwch and Ellin Beltz: I see. So the problem, Trwyr, is that you claimed these as "own work" for the relatively trivial work of translating some content, and that you didn't overtly credit actual authors of the maps. I'll restore these, but I strongly suggest you then clear up the authorship, or a similar deletion is likely to happen again. - Jmabel ! talk 13:52, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel and Ellin Beltz: , thanks for the explanations! I really appreciate it. And I apologize for the trouble caused -- it really wasn't intentional. It's my first foray into translating SVG's and I wasn't entirely sure what I was supposed to do. Will be more careful going forward! Just to clarify, are the files compliant as is or do I need to change something? --Trwyr Tywyllwch (talk) 21:11, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
@Trwyr Tywyllwch: You really ought to credit authorship of each map to the person or organization who did the map; unless something is going on that I've missed, the only "own work" here is your Turkish text.
I don't do work like what you are doing, so I don't have a great example to point to in terms of how best to credit that. User:Ellin Beltz, would you be willing to work with him on one file as a paradigm example, so he can understand what you want him to do? - Jmabel ! talk 00:40, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
@Trwyr Tywyllwch: by "Document above", I meant to type or paste above (in the "Extended content") the source, author, date, and licensing of the underlying visual work for each filename to the right of that filename, so as to comply with that licensing for that work. You could also do that in another instance of "Extended content", preferably with a different name using the parameters documented at Template:collapse top/doc.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 09:40, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

Answer as requested

One example File:Lincoln Denizi haritası.svg ...

Extended content

Original Image Data

  • Source is File:Lincoln Sea map-en.svg
  • Original map data includes Location, Information, Date of Creation, Author, Other Versions and a License.
  • The Author is User:Pinpin and the License is GFDL
  • The image is in three categories.

First upload of Turkish translation

The first upload template gave
  • No Location. Description only in Turkish
  • Date of creation is date of edit not creation date=2021-09-21
  • Source was not given
  • Author was credited to =Trwyr Tywyllwch
  • License was cc-by-sa-4.0
  • No other versions were shown
  • File was totally uncategorized even though these two categories would work and exist
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Maps_of_the_Lincoln_Sea
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:SVG_maps_in_Turkish

Extra edits resulted in

  • Still no location even though the source file clearly has it
  • Still wrong date of creation, can also list date of translation
  • Source is now correct. YAY!
  • "Author=Pinpin; translation by Trwyr Tywyllwch" is good, although the act of translation doesn't add any creative input to the file and does not have to be credited.
  • The license is still wrong cc-by-sa-4.0
  • Category - it made it into SVG maps in Turkish, but not into the category Maps of the Lincoln Sea

What needs to happen to every upload

Just like it says in COM:L and COM:EVID, it is up to the uploader to provide clear and accurate information on each upload. The license on COM:DW has to match the original license. I appreciate the enthusiasm of uploading dozens of maps and images, but I have a real problem with uploading things that are not complete just to get a large number of uploads. The source includes the accurate license. I had a choice of sending these all to no license now that the sources were sometimes fixed, but felt that the sheer number of incorrect uploads led to a COM:EVID situation that was not being fully understood or implemented by the uploader. I hope this helps. Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:56, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
If I got a clear promise to fix all this, I could restore the images, create a temporary category and review them as they were fixed, but the user has dozens of other maps in No Source, perhaps it would be best if he cleared those first and then got back to me about this first batch? Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 19:00, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
@Ellin Beltz: , I promise to do whatever it takes to fix this. Sorry if this sounds really stupid, but I can't figure out how to change the license. Part of the problem is that the license was populated automatically when I first uploaded everything. Chalk it up to the enthusiasm of a newbie, but I wasn't paying particular attention to the licensing as I was uploading... --Trwyr Tywyllwch (talk) 23:10, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
Let's take File:Arjantin Britanya doğumlular 1914.svg as an example. Right now, the license is "cc-by-sa-4.0". According to the source, it is based on a public-domain map where User:Hogweard indicates "PD-self". Assuming that is legitimate (I haven't traced it back further), you could remove your "cc-by-sa-4.0" and in the Permissions area of the Information template put something like "Map: Turkish translation: ". Ellin Beltz, would you agree or is there a different way you'd want this user to do this? - Jmabel ! talk 01:49, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
The file File:Arjantin Britanya doğumlular 1914.svg is a translation of a map I prepared, which was based on a series of SVG maps that can be traced back to File:Argentina - mapa de las provincias.svg, a map I put together with some effort drawing on other sources (for example File:H1N1 Argentina zoonosis.svg, which itself uses "cc-by-sa-3.0"). There is no justification for deleting File:Arjantin Britanya doğumlular 1914.svg. Hogweard (talk) 06:55, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
@Hogweard: Then shouldn't your map be crediting that cc-by-sa-3.0 source, and possibly others? Or was it used to such a small extent that the debt to it is de minimis? - Jmabel ! talk 13:52, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
There was a good deal of work in fixing oddities in the starting point map. In Argentina - mapa de las provincias.svg nevertheless I did credit the original source, and each derivative credits its parent. There is a lot of work since the base work done to produce the result though, that takes it far from the earlier map, and I am content that it is essentially "own". I could put the same cc-by-sa-3.0|GFDL on each derivative, but they are all basically the same as saying "own". Hogweard (talk) 17:30, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
@Trwyr Tywyllwch: : How about you fix the ones you still have uploaded which are also listed for deletion and when you're done with those, we'll go back to this set and fix them? You have a lot of licenses to research and change that are subject to deletion now, it would be best to start there and work backwards. Jmable You suggested route for repairs is a good one and I agree that would have worked until Hogweard's map issue arose. Of course there is no issue if it's de minimis but we don't have any way at this time to check. Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:00, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

Updating image is showing a different file

I've trying to update an image on my page but am seeing a different image.

I've added this new file however when I have added to a Wikipedia page, I am seeing a different (old) version which also seems to have the same filename. I have tried to upload the new file as a different filename but I am told it is not possile as the same file already exists. I am now stuck where my page is showing the old image. Please help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dlevans22 (talk • contribs) 11:11, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

@Dlevans22: The problem is that you uploaded your new file to Wikimedia Commons as File:MoneySuperMarket logo.svg, but the existing file was on English Wikipedia with the same name: en:File:MoneySuperMarket logo.svg. Because the article en:Moneysupermarket.com is on English Wikipedia, it uses the version of the file on English Wikipedia in preference to the one on Wikimedia Commons. You should ask for File:MoneySuperMarket logo.svg to be renamed (using the "Move" item in the "More" menu) to some name that's different from the one on English Wikipedia. --bjh21 (talk) 11:51, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

How do I know if photos are allowed or not? — Preceding unsigned comment added by LatrBye (talk • contribs) 17:43, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

The first steps tutorial has a nice overview of the rules. In short, the files you want to upload must be educational and freely licensed. For the very long description, see COM:SCOPE. --rimshottalk 18:25, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

I cannot find searching in the help files what to do about this, but I suppose the file I uploaded should be deleted. Sorry. Deisenbe (talk) 00:09, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Editing svg images

What software do you use to edit svg images? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Guinevere II (talk • contribs) 15:00, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

@Guinevere II: Inkscape, a free software. Yann (talk) 15:04, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
@Guinevere II: some commercial drawing programs, such as Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw!, can also import & export the format. Since SVG source files are plain text, you can use a text editor as with any other program code; of course you need to learn the syntax, and the output of drawing programs is not usually designed for easy parsing by humans. That said, there are some maps &c. here that have been hand-coded or organized with comments so as to make simple edits, like changing colours, quite easy without benefit of a WYSIWYG interface.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:48, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Question

Are we allowed to change the License of a file that has own work but its in the Public Domain. ItsJustdancefan (talk) 17:46, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

Many people upload files without knowing the rules in detail. They can make a photo of a PD painting and assume it is their own work in the sense of copyright. I think you can change the license in that case to some form of a PD licensing. Elly (talk) 19:38, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Not sure exactly what you mean. If you figured out something you uploaded has an inaccurate license, yes please by all means correct it. If it is your own creation that you previously licensed under CC or similar: you cannot withdraw a free license or make terms more restrictive, but you may offer additional multi-license options for reuse or release into the public domain. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:04, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
    • @Infrogmation: I think what they are saying (User:ItsJustdancefan, correct me if I'm wrong) is that someone else uploaded an image claiming it to be "own work" but in fact they uploaded a third-party PD file. And in that case, yes, you can change the license to say that the image is PD. When you do that, I'd suggest that in the "permissions" section of the Information template you indicate what license the uploader offered, but that the image is in the public domain because [reason]. - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

    • Those two would certainly be eligible to be uploaded. CC-0 there is nonsense—these are simply Public Domain—but either way the result is the same.
    • Question: does anyone know how to best phrase a PD statement for a work dating from 1119 but where we don't have a specific death year?
    • Question: does anyone have a tool to download with metadata direct from JSTOR, or does someone have to download to their own computer then upload to Commons? - Jmabel ! talk 21:53, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
For your first Q we have PD-old-assumed. I don’t think the PD-old-auto templates will take circa or ante dates. Surely there can’t be any doubt the author’s been dead for at least nine centuries, so I can’t see anyone questioning a PD-100 either. Not sure what USA tag should go with those, though, without knowing the publication history.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:07, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

  • @Lascorpion: Copyright_law_of_South_Africa#Copyright_term nu este tot încurajator. "fifty years from the end of the year of the author's death" => "cincizeci de ani de la sfârșitul anului morții autorului". - Jmabel ! talk 02:21, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Is this ok? I'm worried.

I have added 3 images from Flickr to Wikimedia Commons (File:Round Fungus Beetle.jpg, File:Synetocephalus bivittatus.jpg, File:Red-headed flea beetle; Systena frontalis.jpg), all with CC BY 2.0 license. But for some reason I'm worried if I did something against the copyright laws or things as such. Can someone please review the images and tell if they are added with the proper requirements or not? Excellenc1 (talk) 16:04, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

@Excellenc1: They look good to me. The license is one we accept (COM:L) and the appropriate source and author information is present for each image, which satisfies the license requirements. The Upload Wizard generally does a good job of handling those details. Additionally, the images don't strike me as being stolen or otherwise not the work of the source Flickr accounts (see COM:LL for details on that). Files uploaded from Flickr are usually automatically reviewed by a bot to verify that the license is okay and matches the source page, but it can sometimes get a backlog that delays the review. Certain trusted users (COM:LR) can do the review manually, as well. I'll go ahead and do that. clpo13(talk) 16:45, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

My Father's piano music

My father is on wikipedia as he contributed to scientific discoveries in the early 1960s. He passed away in 2015. I recently have found some of his recordings on reel to reel tape, and had them digitized. Can I upload them and link them to his wikipedia page?

If so, is there an easy way of doing it?

Thank you so much! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eschmidt62 (talk • contribs)

  • @Eschmidt62: Are these recordings of music he wrote, or of him performing other people's music? If it is the latter, there may be complicated copyright issues. However, if he wrote the music himself and performs them solo himself, and you are the heir to his intellectual property (which should be the case if no one else is explicitly named as such and you are the heir to the residuum of his estate), then you may offer a license pretty much the same way you would license your own work. I suggest . Make sure you credit him, not yourself, as the author.

We do not accept Fair Use files here on Wikimedia Commons. en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard gives four options for uploading directly on that project: Upload a non-free file on top in the middle; Files for upload process; Plain form for local uploads; and Old guided form (the latter three in the right column under "Wikipedia").   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:12, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

San Angeles map

Moved from Commons talk:Help desk - Jmabel ! talk 02:42, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

I recently created a map of San Angeles by cropping the following map and doing some recoloring: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Southern_California_counties_in_red_noshade.png

@Thabovictorious: Hi, and welcome. In addition to the above, I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact, and Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg photo as a new user. Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the copyright holder(s) license it on their official websites or social media or send the images and permissions via VRT with carbon copies to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. Can I upload an online scan of a picture old enough to be in the public domain?

This map, being originally published in 1872, should be in the public domain in the US. Can I upload that scanned map here, or does the scanning create an additional copyright claim that takes the scan out of the public domain? - LaetusStudiis (talk) 18:28, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

@LaetusStudiis: yes, you can. Commons policy is to ignore any copyright claims made over scans or photos that simply depict a two-dimensional PD work. Use PD-scan in the licence or permission areas; the template itself links to further info at COM:SCAN.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:58, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

South Korean Game Rating and Administration Committee (GRAC) license

Is this license compatible with Commons? And is so, what would the appropriate license be? --Trade (talk) 20:24, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

  • We need someone who can read Korean to answer this. - Jmabel ! talk 21:55, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
I can’t myself; from Google Translate’s version it looks quite a lot like a form of Attribution licence, but the clause saying the terms can be changed without notice is likely disqualifying here. Even though there’s a ‘grandfathering’ provision, our reusers shouldn’t have to verify that the licence is still valid before downloading, and we can’t be constantly monitoring our licensors’ ToU pages for changes.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:48, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
  • @Trade To my understanding,
    1) Change of work: It can be used by changing it to a secondary work= Derivatives allowed
    2) This work may be used for commercial purposes=Commercial Allowed
    3) Share and use on/offline: Share and use through on/offline=Sharealike
    4) Source indication: You must indicate the source of the work.=Attribution
So I think it is CC BY-SA 4.0 and is allowed in commons. Rest on the community. Thanks, Contributers2020Talk to me here 03:46, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
@Contributers2020: how would you translate the following from §I.2? “공공누리 저작물의 이용조건은 변경될 수 있습니다.”—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:06, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

@Contributers2020: that’s only part of the terms. What does your translator get from section I, clause 2 in the next part after that shown in your screenshot?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:25, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479 I guess you're talking about this- My drive again. If yes, then what is the problem? They say the TOS is subjected to change, but if the files was uploaded before the TOS change, the old one will continue for it. Thanks, Contributers2020Talk to me here 05:31, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
@Contributers2020: I tried to explain that in my first remark. Commons is not an individual user, but a host for other reusers. If the terms change after a file has been uploaded here, I agree that the above says it would not affect people who’d already made use of the file. But it would be wrong for us to continue to host the file under the old terms. If the new conditions turn out to be unfree per COM:L, we could not keep the files at all. We have enough trouble checking licences on the media arriving every day, without the added burden of continually re-reviewing the sources of existing files for licensing changes. Because CC licences are irrevocable (to the extent permitted by law) we can continue offering files under them indefinitely, and future reusers can have some confidence that the stated terms still apply.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:52, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

Unsure about whether image is PD-art

Hi! I'd like to upload this picture of a mediaeval textile, which is held by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The Museum claims copyright over it, however per PD-art we don't honour such claims here. But the help page on PD-art specifically notes that a tattered or broken textile may not be purely 2-dimensional and hence could be excluded from PD-art, so I'm unclear if this image would in fact be allowed on Commons. Someone removed the "Wiki Loves Monuments 2021" tag from my entry...

I am new to Wikimedia, and I do not understand what is going on! I have just received three emails stating that someone named "Farragutful" has edited my entry of 4 photos of the Monument I submitted (the Elkhorn Inn, formerly the Empire Coal & Coke Company Miner's Clubhouse in Landgraff, WV) for the "Wiki Loves Monuments" competition, and removed the "Wiki Loves Monuments 2021" tags. If someone can please help me with this, I would appreciate it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Elissejo (talk • contribs) 14:54, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

@Elissejo: It looks to me like what Farragutful did was to update the Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 template to refer to West Virginia (us-wv) rather than just the USA (us). Because that automatically put the files in Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in West Virginia, Farragutful removed the explicit reference to that category. So it seems like a perfectly reasonable piece of maintenance to me, albeit one that could have been better explained in the edit summary. --bjh21 (talk) 15:17, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

Is the sound in this video only missing on my computer?

This is a really significant video, as the portrayed DJ is known to be one of the best in the world, and it is a really good demonstration of his abilities. No sound though. Did the uploader make a mistake, or does this only happen on my computer? Pittigrilli (talk) 22:19, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

@Pittigrilli: While the video is freely licensed, it would be a COM:Derivative of the audio which would be non-free. Which is probably why the video was uploaded without audio. Dylsss (talk) 22:36, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

How to create a derivative file from a part of a larger 4.0 photo

A useful high resolution photo of several persons has been uploaded into Commons by a defined author under cc-by-sa-4.0. For my purposes, I need a sub-picture of one person only. Should I follow the normal uploading procedures for the new pictures and 1. name a new file, 2. describe the source file, 3. name the author and his original licence? - I will use the same licence for the derivative file. Will greatly appreciate a suitable guidance. Regards - Henry39 (talk) 18:06, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

An easy way is to use the Crop tool. See # CropTool on the left on the page. Use Aspect ratio:Free and Crop method:Lossless. Click on Preview. Select "Upload as new file". You can Update the filename if you want. Click on Upload. In the resulting file you can edit the categories. Wouter (talk) 18:54, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

uploading a photo

Hi, I'm trying to upload a photo ( on the wikimedia upload section) on behalf of a photographer to make it available for an existing wiki page. Not so easy though. First of all: the photographer has provided me with the license I found on the wiki common, and I've suggested the license CC BY-NC. I've filled out the summary with the license text, photo name, author, date and such, but it is rejected when I try to upload the photo. The reason is "Warning: A file by that name has been deleted or moved.

The deletion and move log for this page are provided here for convenience:

09:26, 17 August 2021 Túrelio talk contribs deleted page File:Alexander Onofri.jpg (Copyright violation: not a work of uploader) (thank) (global usage; delinker log)"

The matter might be that wikicommons did not accept a license in August for a different image of the same person (i e with the same name of the different photo since it shows this very person), now though it's a different photo taken by a different author/photographer. The questions are: how do I delete the log above, must I report it to "Commons:Undeletion requests."?, or should I try to make a new upload with another name on the photo-file?

I'm sorry to say that the process is very time consuming and not very straightforward, the so called wizard doesn't give much help. And by the way, the license policy we have choosen is not to be found in the upload section under 'licensing'....

Would be thankful for some advice to solve this query in an easy way: the photographer has given his permission we just don't know how to upload it so that it doesn't get deleted immediately. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bellodop (talk • contribs) 20:30, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

@Bellodop: NC licences are not acceptable here (see COM:L, nor are permissions specifically for this site or for Wikipedia. There shouldn’t be a problem uploading a freely licensed file under a slightly different name (ideally more specific), but where the uploader is not the rights-holder, the latter should send permission as described here. Files that have already been deleted can be restored through the same process, on verification of the licence, if their names are mentioned in the permission letter.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:18, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi there Odysseus! Really confusing: I did follow the link to the permission site on Wiki commons to suggest the right kind of permission to the photographer, but for some unknown reason it's not allowed. Please do suggest a suitable permission that doesn't allow commercial use and require the photographer's name to be mentioned, that's all we need. I've asked the photographer to upload photo and permission himself, but I have stepped in to do this since wiki is way to complicated for a layman without reading way too many pages. So how do I do this: I have his permission according to the format on wiki, I got the photo, his email, what more do you need. And as for the image name, this is the same subject but a different photo by a different photographer: does the mysterious process of wiki require a different name or not? The first photo was ditched because the photographer didn't have time to spend understanding the wiki-system. Would be grateful for advice! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bellodop (talk • contribs) 07:21, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

@Bellodop: Hi, and welcome. I'm sorry, but in addition to what Odysseus wrote above, the license restriction "‐NonCommercial" AKA -nc- (noncommercial) is not usable by itself for Wikimedia Commons. For the reasons, please see Commons:Licensing/Justifications. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:10, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
@Bellodop: In general, don't upload a different photo under the same name. If the first on was deleted it is technically allowed, but it's still not a great idea (liable to create some confusion). Even something like adding "01" to the end of your filename (before the dot) helps. - Jmabel ! talk 14:34, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the responses. I just want to explain the source of confusion: I did choose the NC-licence when checking available permissions (can't remember the exact link now but it was all through wiki commons), it would be better to explain why the restriction to non-commercial use it's not allowed. So, in regard to Jeff G:s answer: how can one choose a permission which is non-commercial? The explain in the link ([Commons:Licensing/Justifications]]) is to no help, I'm myself a photographer and would never allow for commercial use of my photos (unless paid for, of course :), but I'll happily upload them to be used for wikipedia (a work I still have to do, and which is now complicated by this permission issue...).

An additional thought here, as a newbie: it seems to me that wikipedia and wikimedia commons has had a lot of instructions, info and such added through the years, and it's now pretty difficult to use. Is there anyone in charge for reorganizing, deleting, adding info to make it more user friendly? This is a common problem with all kind of sites, commercial or not, but for wiki it's paramount to make new members welcome. At least what I think, I'm not very keen to spend time browsing around without finding the right info.

Thanks again for your responses, I hope you can help me getting this straight :) Bellodop — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bellodop (talk • contribs) 16:02, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

  • @Bellodop: "How can one choose a permission which is non-commercial?" If that is a question about Commons, you can't, at least in terms of copyright restrictions. We don't allow that. For non-copyright restrictions we have things like Trademarked and Personality rights. But just like you can't write for Wikipedia and limit reuse of your copy, pretty much the same applies here. And for images on Wikipedia, it is pretty much the same, although some of the Wikipedia's (including the English-language Wikipedia) make limited allowance for non-free content on a "fair use" basis, for which see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content - Jmabel ! talk 02:12, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
I believe that on enWP the NFC option is pretty much a non-starter when it comes to photos of living people.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:20, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your input. So, if I get this right, any company can use wiki-photos for commercial use, there is no way to restrict that? They can actually make money on my photos? Or did I get something wrong here? I spend some time browsing the different permissions on wiki commons and opted for the NC since that for a photographer seemed to be the appropriate one, but waste of time since it was not permitted (not mentioned on that page...). What then is the strictest permission I can opt for? Just give me the licence-code, please. My own web-page is free for anyone to use and copy, but of course no one can monetize the content without my explicit permission since I hold the copyright which is clearly stated on the page.

Anyhow, I did ask the photographer for the first image uploaded to change the permission which she did 2 days ago, how come I can't see the image on the wikimedia commons' search media? No search results at all. I can't get any info on the image, not even that it has been deleted. She has emailed to "permissions-sv@wikimedia.org". No info on that page as to have long it takes to process any permissions/photos uploaded. Best Bellodop — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bellodop (talk • contribs) 07:12, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi there Jeff, Thanks for checking. The user hasn't gotten any ticket number that I know of, the image file is named "Alexander Onofri.jpg". @Bellodop: I found Ticket:2021101810009891, in Swedish, which I don't read. You have been given links to policy COM:SIGN no less than seven times in the past two days, did you read that page yet?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:06, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi Jeff, and thanks for bearing with me :) The permission document I was given was in Swedish, so naturally the text is in Swedish. Maybe it would be better to provide only a document in English if only English is permitted, or a special address where to email it. Swedish wikipedia, by the way, is a lot of robot translations, is there no such for the documents you require? If not, please do send me the right one and we'll fill it out again but in English, otherwise I think I'll give this up. As for the signing, there is no signing botton when using Safari as a browser, and it's a bit unhelpful if you should look for a page with an explanation that you as newbie don't even need you have to look for, but anyway, let's see if this works or not Bellodop (talk) 12:29, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello all, I think we finally resolved the matter, keeping my fingers crossed that it works. But someone should really give these procedures an overhaul, it is way to confusing at least for me. Can't you just unleash one of these bots to make it all user friendly? Bellodop (talk) 20:25, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Getting high definition U.S. Army portraits

I can't seem to find high-definition portraits of certain U.S. Army generals currently in Army Green Service Uniform. In particular, I'm looking for high definition portraits of Generals Christopher G. Cavoli, Lieutenants General Robert P. White and John S. Kolasheski. While I'm sure I should be able to solve the issue by contacting whatever public affairs office the United States Army has (while I don't remember where, certain Army portraits uploaded to Wikimedia are the product of contacting such offices), I don't quite understand the procedure and again, unless I missed something, can't find a formal procedure for getting these images, which should, as with other PD-US-Army images, be in the public domain. If anyone could assist me with this, I would be very grateful. SuperWIKI (talk) 12:28, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

@SuperWIKI: I asked at Template talk:PD-USGov-Military-Army#Getting high definition U.S. Army portraits. Per mw:Extension:Echo#Usage, you must link to another user's page and sign in the same edit in order to effectively mention, notify, or ping them, and even then only if they have "Notify me when someone links to my user page" set (which is the default here). • @SuperWIKI: Your best bet is to look at https://www.dvidshub.net/ for media. By regulation, all official US military media is supposed to be uploaded and cataloged there. If you contact a PAO, they're probably just going to point you to DVIDS. To their credit, DVIDS is extremely meticulous in documenting author and copyright status, though they don't really have a super effective search function, so it may take a while to find what you need. In my experience, if you do need help from a live person, they're also super prompt and professional. GMGtalk 11:46, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
In general, for my case, which PAO should I contact via email? I think I have the email on GOMO, but am I correct in interpreting you that they reply to queries like this seriously? Asking for an image for Wikipedia from the US Army sounds....oddly frivolous for them. SuperWIKI (talk) 11:47, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
Pinging @GreenMeansGo as a courtesy.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:55, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
@SuperWIKI: First do a good search of DVIDS. You kindof have to knock that step out first to justify why a person you contact IRL doesn't just tell you to go search DVIDS. If you cant find what you need, then use the contact information on DVIDS. They seem to be civilian contractors and not PAOs proper. But as I said, they're normally really professional and prompt. Overwriting "works of art"

I wanted to upload a rather less bleached-out version of this image from 1894, but when I tried to do so I got a dire warning that I was trying to overwrite a work of art. So I did a small crop with Crop Tool to copy the description data to a new page and then uploaded my edited version over that; I still got the dire warning but – since I'd just created that page – ignored it. Have I broken some unbreakable rule by doing that? I hope not, but if I have I apologise, and would ask someone to remedy in whatever way seems best. Thank you! Oh, and I did the same here too. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 16:56, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

It is inappropriate to overwrite original images with edited versions of them. Ruslik (talk) 20:53, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
The relevant policy is COM:OVERWRITE. The warning can usually be overridden by saving again, but most edits should be uploaded as separate files per the policy. clpo13(talk) 21:05, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, Ruslik, Clpo13. To clarify: I did not overwrite the original files, but duplicated those pages for my new uploads; if this was wrong then please delete them. Thank you, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 16:51, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
That's no problem at all, as long as you link back to the original and keep any attribution information intact, which Crop Tool does automatically. You can optionally note what changes you made with a template like Retouched picture, but that's not strictly necessary unless the license of the original requires it (as is the case with Creative Commons licenses). clpo13(talk) 17:25, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Another category question

Is it ever necessary or desirable to explicitly add parent categories? For example, let's say I apply Category:All Saints' Church, Godshill to a picture of this church set within the village, should I also apply Category:Godshill, Isle of Wight, which is a parent of Category:All Saints' Church, Godshill, or is this redundant? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 21:07, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. I was looking at the help at Commons:Categories. In the case of animals on/of the Isle of Wight, do you think it should be "on" or "of"? (Existing category names are inconsistent in this respect.) ITookSomePhotos (talk) 12:04, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
@ITookSomePhotos: Generally, we seem to use "in" for anything photographed in a geopolitical area, although I prefer "on" for anything photographed on an island. We seem to use "of" or "from" for anything originating from such an area, but not necessarily photographed there. It can get complicated with international travel and commerce, and with Ausralia as a combination commonwealth / island / continent.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:22, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
OK. Should the hundreds of pictures of sheep in Category:Sheep in theory be there, or should they in theory be categorised only at the lowest levels of all the relevant branches below Category:Sheep? (If both were done then it would seem to violate COM:OVERCAT.) Or is Category:Sheep possibly a holding place for images awaiting more specific categorisation? Anyway, if I have a picture of sheep in a known location, then I should put it in the appropriate bottom-level "location" category and not also at Category:Sheep, right? Sorry for all these questions, but if I'm doing this, I might as well be doing it correctly. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:32, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
@ITookSomePhotos: We like to herd all the sheep into lower categories, unless there is something like Category:Sheep (flat category) that we can also put all of them in.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 19:00, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
@ITookSomePhotos: this is where theory meets practice. Ideally a general topic like Sheep should be almost a meta-category, with sub-cats ~ by location, ~ by breed, ~ by colour, ~ by sex, ~ with people, ~ in art, books about ~, ~ husbandry, unidentified ~, ~ wool, ~skin, ~ butchery, mutton dishes, … containing the bulk of the content, leaving only a small residue of very generally relevant items in the top level. In reality such cats usually become temporary holding pens for media that have been only minimally categorized (in this respect anyway). Occasionally someone gets annoyed with the clutter and creates a “flat” or “to be classified” sub-cat, as Jeff mentioned, to keep the unsorted material out of sight.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:02, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks very much for the help. Is there a way to browse a category and all its subcategories, e.g. all below Category:Sheep, if, say, I wanted a picture of "sheep that I like" but did not know/care which location, which breed, or whatever? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 20:09, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Uploaden nieuw beeldmateriaal

Beste,

Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg images as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each image. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:50, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

uploading photos

hi can i upload pics which are avail on free stock images ?

2. how can i make any category on wikipedia for photos

--Aroojakhan (talk) 09:49, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

@Aroojakhan: Welcome to Wikimedia Commons.
1.Please avoid upload stock images, as most of them are quite likely to be copyrighted by other people or companies. For new users, it is advised that one should stick to uploading your own photos instead. Please also refer to COM:L and COM:SCOPE on what can and what can't be uploaded.
2. Categories can be created by typing Category:<category name>, filling in the corresponding parent category/categories, and publish your edit. However, you should also keep in mind our category policy, which mandate specific rules when creating category names. Usually, existing categories should be sufficient to use.

I don't think this is below the threshold of originality. German jurisdiction has recently become quite strict when it comes to decisions what may be original enough for copyright. @Haoreima: I think the message An automated filter has identified this edit as potentially unconstructive, and it has been disallowed. The description of the filter you triggered was "Suspected embedded archive inside JPEG file (CSD#F9)". But the filter is private, so I do not know how the filter works or why the upload triggered it, administrators are able to view private filters though. Dylsss (talk) 22:57, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
@Haoreima: Your attempted upload of File:AN AUTUMN SCENE.jpg ran afoul of Special:AbuseFilter/160, which was named "Suspected embedded archive inside JPEG file (CSD#F9)" per Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive 61#Influx of files with embedded data (CSD#F9). It exists because some pirates were embedding copyvio content in jpg files starting in November 2016. Complex licensing issue

Hello, I’m somewhat confused regarding which licence I should use for the following file I uploaded [1] This is from a 2003 Canadian documentary about human trafficking. Newport Jazz Festival 1955 - Public Domain

I stumbled upon this program from the Newport Jazz Festival in 1955. It contains some amazing graphics and photography from Richard Avedon that would be great to have in the public domain. It has a copyright tag but from my (primitive) searches it does not look like copyright was renewed. Would this be in the public domain per 'PD-US-not renewed'?

Grazie. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Beatricetoniutto (talk • contribs) 12:45, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

Images by Lotte Laserstein

I have uploaded several paintings by Lotte Laserstein, but now I noticed that those were not in the public domain. Lotte Laserstein only died in 1993. I tried to nominate them for deletion but didn't find any way how to it. Would be grateful if someone could show me how to do it. hi im a new user and only want to contribute to this great platform. Hello. Almost any recent photograph you find on the internet is copyrighted and non-free unless otherwise stated at the website where it is displayed. You, however, claimed these random pictures to be your own work and granted a Creative Commons licence for them without being the copyright holder yourself. This is why those photos were deleted. So, as a rule of thumb, please only upload images that have a free licence stated at their source, or that you did take yourself without publishing them before without any such licence. You may also want to read COM:Licensing. De728631 (talk) 20:15, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

Uploading Photo problem

I have this image of singer Jonathan Mergui which I took and would like to put on his Wikipedia page, as it will illustrate the singer's emotional style of performing, but I keep getting a red message telling me that the way I named the image is not allowed, and despite my trying different names, it still won't allow me to post. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ezraedits98 (talk • contribs) 09:26, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

Your upload was caught as suspicious by the upload filter, because it was in PNG format, you are a new user here and it was a cross-wiki upload. PNG is a quite unusual format for photographs, it probably didn't come out of your camera in that format. Just upload the original camera image and it should work. --rimshottalk 18:33, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
@Ezraedits98: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png photos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their official website or social media presence or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, it will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), so you may want to upload a jpg version which will look sharper, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:53, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

Should all this artist's work be on the Commons?

Category:Ted Ellis (artist). I am unfamiliar with the size requirements considered small enough to be allowed. He was born in 1968 and is still alive. Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 16:42, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

  • There is no such thing as "small enough to be allowed" on Commons. If he is still alive, all his work is still in copyright, and certainly will be for the rest of your or my lifetime, so unless Ellis himself grants a license, it does not belong on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 17:03, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

PDF is 0 × 0 when uploaded

I downloaded File:La gran vía - revista madrileña cómico-lírica, fantástico-callejera en un acto y cinco cuadros (IA lagranviarevista4362chue).pdf and then uploaded a version with page 2 rotated the right way up. When I did this, however, its dimensions were 0 × 0 rather than the expected 647 × 1,037. I downloaded that version to check and the downloaded looks normal. Reverting to the original fixed the issue on Commons, but on Wikisource the original file also isn't displaying properly. I've had this problem before, and I'd appreciate either someone fixing this or advice on what I can do to fix this. Thanks! —CalendulaAsteraceae (talk | contribs) 05:18, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

OK, actually, I checked, and File:A critical exposition of the popular Jidád.pdf still has this problem as well, so s/I've had this problem before/I'm still having this problem, I guess. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talk | contribs) 05:58, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
I ran that one through qpdf and it apparently fixed some minor error that was preventing the display. Unfortunately, I don't know what error it was, but PDFs can be finicky at the best of times. clpo13(talk) 17:59, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
I was able to fix the first PDF as well. It didn't work at first, but when I told qpdf to linearize (web optimize) the file, the display issue went away. In case anyone's interested, I have some notes on using qpdf to manipulate PDF files at User:Clpo13/QPDF. clpo13(talk) 18:08, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! Both files look much better on Commons. However, neither is showing up correctly on Wikisource. Do you know what's up with that? —CalendulaAsteraceae (talk | contribs) 22:32, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
This is actually less urgent than I thought, since "La gran vía" is fine on Spanish Wikisource, where a transcription would actually go, and I don't have plans to transcribe "A critical exposition", but it would probably be good to figure out what's going on if possible. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talk | contribs) 22:42, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
My guess is that it could be chalked up to minor differences in the software versions between wikis. On Commons, the file history of "La gran vía" shows that the second and fourth revisions have 0 × 0 dimensions while the others are okay (which is itself odd since yesterday my initial revision was 0 × 0 but now it's not), while on English Wikisource, all revisions are 0 × 0 except for my revision of 11:02, October 27, 2021, and on Spanish Wikisource, all the revisions display properly. Then again, Special:Version for each shows the same versions for PDF related extensions, so I have no clue. clpo13(talk) 17:52, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

I uploaded 6 images. I intended them to be entered into the Wiki Loves Monuments photo challenge, but it appears I used the wrong link. Can I just delete them all and re-upload them using the correct link? I ask because the rules of the challenge say that the photo must not have been uploaded to Wiki previously so I am worried they will be rejected.

Thank you! Sandy --PerriAndMe (talk) 11:45, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

@PerriAndMe: Hi, and welcome. To be categorized in Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in Massachusetts, a file should have "us-ma" between the license and the categories. Please do not add files to that category manually.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:50, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
@PerriAndMe: adding to the above, although I can’t speak for any of the contest organizers, I believe that files uploaded during the contest’s time window should qualify whether or not they were correctly tagged at the time. If they were not yet so identified as of the closing date, though, they may get missed by the volunteers who are winnowing the entries into the relevant “short list”.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:44, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

Is such file even PD?

I have a few camera photos of 16. sqdn. SAAF from 1945. Problem is: a) this was taken from airplane camera (specifically Beaufighter) b) plane was pilotted by maj. Anderson, who is still alive and lives in South African Republic c) image was taken on land of nazi-occupied SR Slovenia (later Yugoslavia). My guess is that this file is probably PD, but which tag? CC-0 as this is (technically looking) machine work, PD-Slovenia as this is picture of Slovene town or PD-SAR as the pilot is from SAR or even nothing from above? One example of such picture is available on https://saafww2pilots3.yolasite.com/resources/45%202%2015%20b.jpg?timestamp=1488747392656. Thanks in advance. I combined two pictures from this site, should i share them

Hi,

I combined two pictures from commons.wikimedia.org. Both of the "details page" of each picture said that if I modify it I should re-share the picture I make. So should I upload the new picture which is a combination of the other two? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skunkemia2 (talk • contribs) 03:10, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

@Skunkemia2: “share alike” in the CC BY-SA licence isn’t a request to re-share or pass it on, like a chain letter; it means that if you do publish a combination you are not allowed to change the terms. (For example you shouldn’t forbid others from combining your new picture with other images, and you should credit the authors of both originals and provide a link to the licence—which requires others to do the same, including crediting you for your part.) That said, if the combination image has educational value of its own, you are certainly welcome to upload it here.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:59, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

FCDO sub-Flickr Account and Open Government License.

Hi there!

I'm looking at contributing a higher quality image of the British Embassy in Ireland. This particular image is owned by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office's Ireland Flickr sub-account.

According to the template Template:FCDO - images from Flickr belonging to the FCDO are free to use under the Template:OGL.

Does this also apply to FCDO's sub-accounts? We can see that this account is owned by the FCDO via their website.

For reference - I'd like to replace File:British Embassy, Dublin.jpg with this image.

Making a Bot

Hello All,

I want to make a bot for Commons, which will be something similar like Zhuyifei1999's FlickreviewR 2 Bot. I read the meta.wikimedia's article for a Bot but didn't understand much. Can you all please simplify on where to input the code, in which language and all. --<spanT style="color:orange;">Contributers2020Talk to me here 12:13, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello. Have you also read Commons:Bots? It has some general information as e.g. the need to create a dedicated alternative user account to run the bot. Speaking of the technical details, afaik the language is pretty much up to you as long as you run the bot from your own computer. Existing bots use a variety of languages like Java, Perl or PHP. Experienced bot users like or Jarekt, however, would be able to tell you more. De728631 (talk) 20:28, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
There's also en:Help:Creating a bot, though some of that info might be specific to Wikipedia. Pywikibot is a commonly used library that is implemented in Python. There's a brief tutorial on how to write a simple script using it at mw:Manual:Pywikibot/Create your own script. Other libraries used to access the MediaWiki API can be found at mw:API:Client code. As a bot is essentially just a long-running script that interacts with the API, any of those libraries can be used to create one, though some, like Pywikibot, are optimized for that purpose. clpo13(talk) 21:40, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

Unapproved derivative works

Hi,

How do you proceed when a picture of your own is used by someone for an ugly derivative work?

It's not possible to delete the new file, though you don't want to be associated with the content. Any template to indicate the disapproval of the current use, by the original photographer ? Thanks for your help. -- 115.84.95.109 04:27, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. How was the original photo licensed? The new file? What are their names?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:34, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
Standard CC-by-sa-4.0. The new file is not vandalism, but just ugly, with extra text, and looks like a meme. Best regards -- 115.84.95.109 04:46, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
Example: Here the original and here the derivative work. Imagine the author does not approve this version (I don't know if it's the case here, just an example). -- 115.84.95.109 05:52, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
Derivative work under this license is required to "demarcate or otherwise identify that changes were made to the original Work." I would say that on Commons, if they have failed to do that, you should feel free to do it on their behalf. - Jmabel ! talk 05:58, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, Jmabel and Jeff G. for your responses. Which template could be used here by the photographer? or where this text should be added on the derivative work? I notice that the same user (making such Photoshop collages) had another file deleted before, by consensual decision (scope problem). If it happens to you (your photo with a text you don't like), which way do you indicate your opposition with the current use? Kind greetings. -- 183.182.123.54 07:02, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
You may use Template:Published with appropriate parameters, preferably near the license. Reusers should see COM:REUSE. Pinging @RalfHuels as uploader of the example images.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:56, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
If it were based on my work and I wanted to disown it, I wouldn't use a template; I'd add an explicit indication in the "authors" section as to what was and wasn't mine. - Jmabel ! talk 00:39, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

you added some categories which do not exist. If you click on the red links and add text you can create new categories. However it would be more usefull to search for existing categories where the book File:Q&A.Oct.27.pdf would fit in. I do not know for certain whether your book is within the scope of Commons, please read Com:Scope. Kind regards, Elly (talk) 13:07, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

:@Issamo-92:

Hi, and welcome. Per COM:FT#WAVE, we do accept WAV audio files, but WAV files are usually impractical because they are usually uncompressed. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:44, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
The LinguaLibre project with hundredthousends of uploads uses wav only (File:LL-...wav") and it is no problem as users will always hear the mp3 or obb-vorbis transcoded versions. (like tiff->jpg) --C.Suthorn (talk) 18:27, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

Upload mp3 file

Hey please how can I upload the audio file in your site — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kaoutar tarbouch (talk • contribs) 13:00, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

@Kaoutar tarbouch: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please feel free to request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits), having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:18, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

Signing with 4 tidles

Hello there! I nominated an image to COM:QIC, but the 4 tidles doesn't work. Why sometimes signing signatures with 4 tidles doesn't work although JavaScript is enabled? Vitaium (talk) 01:25, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

Can I get back my deleted images

Is there any recycle bin kind of thing in Wikimedia commons. I wanted to view and recover some of my deleted images. These images were recently deleted like 12 months ago. I really want those images back. Please help me. --Huzaifa abedeen (talk) 17:56, 24 October 2021 (UTC)

Administrators can view the deleted material but whether they agree to restore them depends on the reason for those deletions. Ruslik (talk) 20:45, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
@Huzaifa abedeen: You may want to have a look at Commons:Undeletion requests. Ixfd64 (talk) 18:59, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Knowing abouts tasks

Is there a page describing the tasks I can do on Commons (other than uploading files) like . Thank you. --Hulged (talk) 16:12, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

@Hulged: A good place for a new user to start might be categorizing poorly-categorized images. Read COM:Categories and then visit Category:Media needing categories by source or Category:Media needing category review by source. For a broader list of tasks, you can check the categories Category:Commons media maintenance and Category:Commons backlog. I recommend asking for information about any of those tasks you are interested in before attempting them. – BMacZero (🗩) 16:48, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
BMacZero, I'll start with categorisation as you said. Thank you. --Hulged (talk) 18:50, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
@Hulged: Why are most of your uploaded photos small, with no camera metadata? Please see COM:HR.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:03, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
Jeff G., I don't know how to add the metadata. Hulged (talk) 04:14, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
@Hulged: Normally, photo metadata should be in the image file by default. What are you photographing with? What is your process between that camera (or phone) and uploading here? - Jmabel ! talk 04:17, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
Some of my uploaded photos are old and taken 2 or 3 years ago with mobile (but some are new – taken in January 2020). I uploaded these photos because there was a need of the photographs in en:Ichgam (in January 2020, probably) and most of my uploads are related to Ichgam. Hulged (talk) 04:29, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
@Hulged: It's unusual that your phone wouldn't add any metadata (e.g. EXIF data). Did you upload these right from your phone, or were there some intervening steps? - Jmabel ! talk 02:33, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
Jmabel, I don't remember correctly tbh, but I think I uploaded them from my phone but the photos were in brothers phone for a long time because I had deleted them. When I needed them in the Ichgam en-WP article, I asked him to share. Hulged (talk) 05:04, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

File:Aktionstag zum §219a.webm

I uploaded a new version of File:Aktionstag zum §219a.webm, but it ended up as File:Aktionstag zum 219a.webm. The revision needs to be moved into File:Aktionstag zum §219a.webm. The new upload has no version history that would be needed to keep. --C.Suthorn (talk) 07:26, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

✓ Done That's weird though – there seems to be a bug that swallows special characters. Which tool did you use to upload the new versions? De728631 (talk) 22:48, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
I had missing characters in the input file. I thought I had found them all, but did not detect them all. --C.Suthorn (talk) 05:53, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Are there any free templates for Libre Office on Commons?

Are there any free templates for Libre Office on Commons? If not, is it not allowed? If it is not allowed, why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tirkon (talk • contribs) 17:53, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

Which kind of templates do mean? There is Created with LibreOffice but I don't think there is a specific screenshot template. If you mean templated files for use in LibreOffice though, as in formatted text files or Impress presentation templates, those are not within the project scope of Commons. Commons is a media repository where all content needs to have an educational purpose, so we do not host any and all kind of free files. De728631 (talk) 22:56, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply, @De728631: ..  :-) I meant the latter for use in LibreOffice. Does anyone know of sources that host free (in the sense of Wikimedia) templates for Libre Office that are not educational in purpose? -- Tirkon (talk) 13:12, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
@Tirkon: You might want to check the Libreoffice Extensions page. It has a lot of GUI-related things but also a decent number of various file templates as far as I can tell. De728631 (talk) 10:31, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
