Deleting excessive photos from a Wikipedia page

I want to delete excessive photos from my Wikipedia page. Altogether five photos linked to my author page are disturbingly displayed on Google, even though only one of these photos has been chosen as the "profile picture". The other ones are "stocked", but there's no purpose in stocking so many photos that have no purpose for the page. All of the five photos are now displayed in Google in a way that is disturbing to the eye. Please help me deleting the four excessive photos. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ursula83 (talk • contribs) 06:14, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

@Ursula83: Welcome to Wikimedia Commons! Based on your contributions, I think you're talking about Category:Aura Sevón. It seems that in this case there is a simple answer since if you are Aura Sevón then you're probably not Heli Sorjonen, who seems to have taken the pictures. We can't keep the pictures on Commons without written permission from Heli Sorjonen. GSS has marked them all accordingly and so unless Heli Sorjonen contacts our Volunteer Response Team to grant permission to use the pictures they're likely to be deleted in a week or two. And of course if Heli Sorjonen only grants permission to use one of the pictures, then only that one will be kept. --bjh21 (talk) 09:34, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

I don't know what I'm doing wrong

I am haunted by "someone" who keeps tracking me for years. Because he always happens to edit the same file as me and it happened within minutes or hours after I editing, but sometimes it happens the next day. What confuses me is that we have over 80 million files and he edits the same file with me by coincidence every time. This user is not an administrator. If he hadn't been unnecessarily watch to my contributions, why so many coincidences? I questioned him on his talk page about why I am being tracked with you when I am editing files, but his response was to deny (which means he didn't track who edit what). It is hardly possible not to suspect his intentions when there is so much evidence that shows he tracking me, especially he has not given me a reasonable explanation. I have warned him many times in the past about the wikihounding rule, but he didn't listen. I never asked him to spy on me and I don't like spying on anyone. I know you all think everyone edits file like him and there's nothing wrong with that. But I feel annoying when I see he edited the same file as me after I editing. I know that nobody has the right to interfere with anyone's freedom to edit files, but freedom should not be understood to mean anyone can "hounding" a specific user on Commons for their private reason. Because I advised him and told him clearly that the information about how to plan his own work for every day editing, and he still likes to track me. My edits didn't have a personal motivation and no prejudice against anyone, so I don't know why he chose me. There have been too many misunderstandings and disputes between me and him since he became someone who tracked me. I don't know how to ignore him?--Kai3952 (talk) 08:50, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

@Kai3952: Assuming I've correctly guessed who the other user is, I think what you're seeing here is the en:birthday paradox. Both of you are very prolific editors, and you're both interested in the same geographic area, so it's highly likely that you'll occasionally work on the same file at about the same time. In the last month, you've made over 10,000 edits, and the other user has made over 3,000. According to the Editor Interaction Analyser there are 41 pages that both of you have edited in that month, and of those only 12 that you edited first. I'm no statistician, but that's what I'd expect if you were working in an area that has about a million relevant files. It's possible that there's some more direct evidence, but the co-incidences alone don't look like evidence of deliberate action to me. --bjh21 (talk) 11:38, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

At first he was editing File:Cosplayer of Tamamo-no-mae, Fate Grand Order 20180520a.jpg, but three minutes later he chose this file "台湾湿地保護協會 Union for the Conservation of Taiwan Wetlands - panoramio" and to rename it to "Kaohsiung Office, Wetlands Taiwan 20130215". How do you explain that?--Kai3952 (talk) 19:15, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
@Kai3952: What is there to explain? Two editors, both hugely active in curating files relating to Taiwan, edit some of the same files, sometimes at around the same time. That's precisely what I'd expect to unless you were making active efforts to avoid one another. --bjh21 (talk) 20:55, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
I know that he and me are both active curating files relating to Taiwan, but I don't know why you have "this prejudice" against Taiwan. It's not my fault that I edited them on Commons. I admit that there are only 23 million people in Taiwan and not everyone is happy to upload photographs to Commons so the number of photos is much lower than you English speaking countries. If your prejudice is to prove that all his tracking over the years is all coincidence, tell me what is the relationship between Cosplay and Wetland conservation? This photo File:台湾湿地保護協會 Union for the Conservation of Taiwan Wetlands - panoramio.jpg must be found from Zuoying District, Kaohsiung, Organizations of Taiwan, etc, these categories. I added Category:Wooden chairs in Taiwan and changed Category:Organizations of Taiwan to Category:Conservation organizations of Taiwan on the photo. Before me he had never edited File:台湾湿地保護協會 Union for the Conservation of Taiwan Wetlands - panoramio.jpg, nor had he ever discussed with anybody. If he didn't deliberately to watch Special:Contributions/Kai3952 as he edited the file he uploads on File:Cosplayer of Tamamo-no-mae, Fate Grand Order 20180520a.jpg, how could he find the photo I just edited in three minutes? It's hard for me to believe it is a coincidence! I don't care if he is a coincidence or deliberate, I really care about I've been annoyed by the behavior that he always to edit the same file as me within minutes or hours after I editing. It makes me feel like he's ghost hiding behind my back. I didn't want to interfere with his freedom but he cause me stress and fear. By the way, he and I are not the only ones interested in Taiwan, such as Boattoad, Chongkian, Fcuk1203, Heeheemalu, KOKUYO, Outlookxp, Pbdragonwang, S099001, Tze Chiang Hao, Taiwankengo, TDCKW, Tbatb, WEI, WAN-CHEN, 鐵路1, 迴廊彼端, そらみみ, 林高志,‎ 地下高雄, 捷利, 雅婕, etc, they are often editing and active curating files relating to Taiwan, but no one will tracking me.--Kai3952 (talk) 00:58, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

How do I access PNG renders of SVG files in older revisions?

Hi. I'm currently submitting a bug report for SVG Translate Tool involving downloading an SVG file, and I need to access a PNG render of an older SVG file revision as I already reverted changes I made to one of my previous translations (before that tool even existed). The tool uploads a correct form of the translated SVG that displays correctly when uploading directly to Commons. The only downside is it actually creates a new revision for the original file instead of uploading a new file, and it doesn't even ask what I want to do. So I figured out downloading the file and uploading it to Commons as a new file the old fashioned way would be better. Nope. Turns out when you download it, it displays correctly in browser in direct SVG render, but SVG editor (in my case Inkscape) displays original labels, as well as internal MediaWiki PNG renders of the SVG file. That was unfortunate. And now I need to access PNG renders of those older revisions of the SVG file I tried to update. — Polda18 (talk pagecontributions) 17:19, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

Ok, so I learned about the switch statement, and it seems the SVG files do actually contain it. I have Commons in Czech language display, why does it display original labels and not the translated ones? -- Polda18 (talk pagecontributions) 17:28, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
I'm an idiot. There is language selection tool under the file preview if there are multiple languages for labels. My bad. -- Polda18 (talk pagecontributions) 17:40, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
I guess what happened is my browser got stuck with a cached page structure. Not the page itself, just the structure. Because when I use the SVG Translate Tool, the last revision of File:FPM compass with annotation.svg actually says translation to de, which is actually transferring of the implicit language (which was originally German) into its own language selector. I updated it three times, translation to Czech, English and implicit language transfer to German. Implicit language should be English I guess, but that's subject for discussion at the file talk page. The page itself displays English labels, there's no dropdown menu for language selection, which might be just on my end. Browser cache purge didn't help, page cache purge didn't help, I guess browser restart might solve this issue as it clears cookies and majority of browser cache. If not, I can always clear the cache manually using CCleaner. -- Polda18 (talk pagecontributions) 18:17, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

Clarity

Hello:

I am new to Wiki Commons and need to find images for a book I can use. I really am not computer savvy and would love instruction as how I may use free images.

Thank you.

  • Commons is a repository of reusable images. Different images have different licenses.
  • You may absolutely freely reuse anything that is in the Public domain. However, other images are copyrighted and have requirements spelled out in their individual licenses.
  • I recommend you read Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. If you then have questions about specific licenses or specific images, come back here with those. Also, you may want to create an account so that it is easier for people to communicate with you. And do see COM:SIGN. - Jmabel ! talk 23:48, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

I believe this renaming request is problematic and counterproductive to those who follow Commons policies and guidelines

I believe this renaming request is problematic and counterproductive to those who follow Commons policies and guidelines. The file name "台湾湿地保護協會 Union for the Conservation of Taiwan Wetlands" itself is no problem, but after the renaming, I see not much difference except no Chinese language. If he thinks there is a problem with it, then he should follow the standards of COM:FR and the renaming request needs to satisfy at least one of them. I know that the place shown in the photograph is a building somewhere in Zhouzai Wetland Park, but I don't think it's necessary to rename. To me there is no difference between "台湾湿地保護協會" and "台灣濕地保護聯盟" but there is a difference for those who care about Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese. If this user insists on renaming it, he has to prove that the building shown in the photograph is the "Kaohsiung Office, Wetlands Taiwan" and 台湾湿地保護協會 is called the "Wetlands Taiwan" in its English name. The problem is that he didn't.--Kai3952 (talk) 22:00, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

Trying to identify an early 20th century business machine

See Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. As all of these images are copies from books that are several centuries old, you are not going to get permission from the artist. The users who uploaded the files may be the ones who scanned or photographed the document but it is more likely that they found a public domain image on the internet or in an archive and chose to upload it. You could try contacting the uploader to ask for their permission but it will probably be meaningless in this case. From Hill To Shore (talk) 08:06, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

@Nottingham23:
  • Nothing here should require you paying any money.
  • If you want to make a copy for your personal use (including printing the image), just do that. If you want to post it to another website, or publish it on paper, or use it in a presentation, etc., see Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia.
  • Licensing requirements for particular images can vary, and you don't provide a URL, so I don't know just what image you have in mind. If after reading Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia you still have questions, please ask here again, and provide a link to the particular file page you are talking about. Uploading someone else's selfie to Wikipedia

I'm finding this all very confusing. There is a page already created for a person (call her "the subject"). I wanted to add her picture to the page. I emailed her and told her what I was doing so she emailed me a picture of herself, taken by herself. She granted me permission in the email to use the photo here on Wikipedia.

However, upon trying to post that, I find that it's not that simple. After reading lots of confusing articles, I get the impression that the subject needs to complete the free license form (to which there is a link). I've tried walking through that process and it gets to a stage where it wants her to click "I or others have already uploaded the file to Wikimedia Commons". However, before the subject can click on that, I need to have already uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons. That is where I am currently getting stuck.

In Wikimedia Commons, I am on step 3 of the file upload process, "Release rights". In the section where it asks "Now tell us why you are sure you have the right to publish this work:", I'm not at all clear which one applies to this situation. Please help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaysterwiki (talk • contribs) 21:40, 1 February 2022‎ (UTC)

Evylena Nunn Miller

MY name is Leslie Compton. I have recently completed my research on my great aunt, Evylena Nunn Miller. The book, The Forgotten Artist, will be launched the end of April, 2022. I have a write-up about her which I wish to down load into your files. But at every step of the way I seem to be doing something incorrectly. There is always an error in any of her biographies which I wish to correct; she was never the director of the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, she was a board member only. I of course have other facts which are not usually listed.

Can you help me download this information? It is a word document. I have removed the doc. from the file but I am told I need to put either JP after it or something else. Again, I need some help with this. Thank you. Leslie Compton <redacted> — Preceding unsigned comment added by LeslieCompton (talk • contribs) 20:34, 3 February 2022‎ (UTC)

Hello. I'm afraid but such texts are typically not in the project scope of Commons. We focus on educational media rather than original writings. The PDF text files that we do have are copies of old magazines and scientific journals or such, but otherwise we do not accept written text. If the book itself is notable, somebody will eventually create a Wikipedia article about it. In the meantime I suggest that you edit and improve the Wikipedia article Evylena Nunn Miller directly instead of uploading a commentary over here. De728631 (talk) 21:06, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Postmodern Aesthetics (talk) 00:04, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

@Postmodern Aesthetics and Tw604: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg images as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each image. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:55, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

So the file needs to go through DR instead of speedydelete, right? --- ILikelargeFries (talk) 15:28, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
@ILikelargeFries: If there is a DR that essentially takes precedence over anything else, as it has already been submitted to the community for review. If it is meant to be a CV then it should be marked initially as a CV, and if admins are uncertain they will convert it. If you have concerns that there is a DR that is in fact a problematic CV that needs quicker action, then please flag it for higher level attention. With regard to finding something at a website and here, finding it elsewhere does not make our copy CV, ours could have been uploaded first; or the photographer could have uploaded them both under suitable licenses. It all depends on the evidence and circumstance on the image, and not solely that it is elsewhere. If someone clearly cites that other website as the source, then that makes it more obvious that we have a CV.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:41, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

Would Jefferson Community College Logo SUNY.jpg on the english wikipedia qualify for PD-logo like File:Jamestown Community College.svg or would the building make it too not simple?

Both the swoosh (as stated by File:Jamestown Community College.svg) and the building are simple, so does that mean they qualify for PD-logo? I have an official SVG Version found on the website. --Lallint⟫⟫⟫Talk 19:47, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

Bulk removal of categories needed.

I'd like to know if there is a way (possibly using a script) to bulk remove categories from a large number of files that have been over categorized. There were 1400 files uploaded in the Category:American Currency Collection. That category was, in turn, placed into the following six categories:

The problem is that each of the 1400 files were not just added to the American Currency Collection category, but they were also individually added to each of the six categories that American Currency Collection is a member of. That is, each of the 1400 files are over categorized. It appears the uploader misunderstood how categories work when he/she did the bulk upload. That having been done, is there a way to bulk correct all 1400 files? I would figure there may be a script that an admin could use to perform the task. Given the number of files involved, individually editing the files by hand is not practical, and is likely to be error-prone.

To try to be perfectly clear as to what is being requested ... for each of the 1400 files in the American Currency Collection category, remove the six categories listed above, keeping only the American Currency Collection category and any hidden categories.

I'd like to go through this collection at some point, breaking it down into sub-categories, but I don't want to touch any of these files before this problem is corrected, out of fear of making the problem worse. Thanks for your help. PoundTales (talk) 23:52, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

  • @PoundTales: There are probably a few ways to do this. One would be to start from Category:American Currency Collection and use VFC to remove the other categories. If, as I believe, the block of text for the categories is identical in all of the files, then it is a very simple textual substitution.
  • If that makes you nervous, you can start by selecting just a file or two on which to make the change, rather than try to do them all straight off the bat. And if that still makes you nervous, just say so here and I can follow through and do this on your behalf. - Jmabel ! talk 00:12, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks much for the pointer to VFC. The tool and its documentation looked a bit intimidating, at first, but that's only because it's very powerful and flexible. Might I suggest that someone add in large friendly letters the advice: "Don't panic!"? LOL. I wound up creating a couple test files to get a sense of how the tool worked before unleashing it on my real world problem. You were correct in that it turned out to be a very simple problem, with the right tool in hand. I appreciate your "teach a man to fish" approach. I may not have a need for VFC very often, but it's good to know it's there when it's needed. I'm pretty sure bulk uploading accidents of this nature are not infrequent, here. Thanks again for the help. PoundTales (talk) 03:03, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

Determining the public domain status of a book

page 3: Author is born 23. December 1859
page 2: published 1910 in Düsseldorf

Hello, I am describing why I think the copyright of the book described below is expired and thus license is public domain. I would appreciate comments if you are of the same or opposite opinion. I do not want to make the work with the publication of the complete book, if it is deleted afterwards. Who would decide whether the book is deleted or not? In which category would the book have to be placed regarding the expired german copyright?

Here you can see the first seven pages of the German book by "Franz-Josef Brors" titled "Unterbach". Unterbach was then a village, which is now a district of the city of Düsseldorf in Germany. No other book written by the author can be found. As can be read on these pages (see on the right), the author was born on 23. December 1859 and the book was published in 1910 in Düsseldorf. The date of the author's death cannot be researched.

The book was published in 1910. According to American law, copyright expires 95 years after publication, which would have been 2005. Thus the copyright would have clearly expired there.

It is more difficult to consider this under German law, according to which 70 years must have passed after the death of the author. However, the date of death could not be determined so far, but the date of birth on 23. December 1859. In this case, the latest probable date of death must be carefully determined. This must lie 70 years back before 9. February 1952, with which the author would have reached an age of 92 years. At that time, the average age at death for men (1956 is available) was less than 63 years, which he would have exceeded by 29 years. According to the German Federal Statistical Office, in 1951 (and also until 1960) the proportion of people over 90 was zero, i.e. below the accuracy of the calculation. It is therefore almost certainly impossible for him to have reached the age of 92 necessary for copyright to have existed in 2022. When published in 2019, this age would still have been 89 years, which it was still possible according to these statistics. That was the reason for me to make the publication at Wikimedia commons only now. I wait already ten years for it. This is how the law should be interpreted most generously in the author's sense.

The marksmen confraternity with the name "Sankt (Saint) Hubertus Schützenbruderschaft Unterbach", thus in the residence of the book author, published a reprint in 1983. No complaints - not even out of court - have come to the attention of the marksmen confraternity. In public libraries, with the exception of two original-editions that cannot be borrowed, I have found only this reprint in the stock. I, the creator of the scan, own the original edition from 1910. Also from this point of view, the publication is on the safe side. The original can be recognized by the fact that down on page 2 the indication of the publisher "Gesellschaft für Buchdruckerei und Verlag Düsseldorf m. b. H." is noted, while this was replaced in the reprint by the names of the responsible persons of the publishing marksmen confraternity.

In which category would the book have to be placed regarding the expired german copyright?

@Delwell30: If you took this photo, you probably own the copyright (this varies due to circumstance, but is probably true). So you have to ask yourself: do you want to give up all rights and claims to it as much as you can? If so, put it in the public domain. Do you want to let anyone use this photo for any purpose, but that person has to give you credit? If so, choose CC BY 4.0. Do you want to let anyone use this photo for any purpose, but that person has to give you credit and any works that include it have to have the same terms of sharing? If so, choose CC BY SA 4.0. Is it okay to upload Gens du Pays to that page to help out? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kxeon (talk • contribs)

@Kxeon: Generally, for music, there are two sets of rights that are relevant: the first is the actual composition and the second is for publishing of a recording of it. In this case, since the song was composed so recently, it is very likely that it is copyright-protected. You could make a recording of the song and release your performance under a free license that is compatible with what is allowed here, but that wouldn't change the underlying composition rights. You could get or make a recording and upload it to individual projects like the English Wikipedia under a fair use rationale, but it couldn't be uploaded here unless you can establish that the song as a composition is freely licensed first. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:48, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

Possible spam/promotional accounts

Is there any policy similar to COM:SPAM that's for accounts, or do images just have to be deleted one by one?

There are multiple accounts (at least of the ones I know) that have only uploaded works related to Mina Luna and her various businesses in a spam-like way. Many of the images seem like they could be copyright violations as well. While writing this, I actually found some more accounts promoting Luna. One is recently active, and the others are stale:

Similar accounts on other Wikimedia projects (Spanish Wikipedia[2][3][4][5], Wikidata[6][7], English Wikipedia[8][9][10]etc) have also edited/spammed about Mina Luna - and from the way the content is written, I can only assume it's to promote her and advertise her businesses. What's the best way to handle this on Commons (or could I possibly have some assistance)? There's a lot of individual images, which seem difficult to nominate for deletion one by one.

I've also found at least one created promotional category (Category:Augmented_Reality_pioneer), and there might be more. - Whisperjanes (talk) 19:05, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

I deleted some obvious promotion-only files that were also apparent copyvios. Moreover I warned the most recent accounts. I don't think we need to block any of them right now – especially not the stale ones. If the active accounts continue down that road though, they should be indeffed. I did keep the images of Mina Luna though because judging from Q106666859 (Q106666859) she appears to be somewhat notable. De728631 (talk) 12:37, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for your help, De728631! This is what I was looking for.
I do want to point out that the Wikidata item was created by a single-purpose IP and some of the accounts above (Eddmireles and Yyv02) that have also only spammed info about Luna on Wikidata. The WD item seems to be part of their promotional edits across Wiki projects, so I'd just be careful about using it as a bar to judge notability. If you search "Mina Luna" on Google News, for example, you won't be able to find one article mentioning her.
But, I don't think it's an issue to leave one or two of the pictures up of her - I just thought it's worth mentioning she's not currently notable by Wiki standards (and she may only seem so because of promotional edits). - Whisperjanes (talk) 22:35, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

In a mess with an image

Hi. I want to use an image which is from approx 1930. The photographer is unknown. I believe this makes it out of copyright and in the public domain in my country (UK).

My friend uploaded the image for me the first time and failed to enter the correct copyright information.

I then had a go and although the image is there, I am not allowed to use it because it has the same title as the first time it was uploaded.

I have attempted to upload the image twice and am now in a technical tangle.

Please can someone help me to get rid of one of the images and to correctly fill in the details for the one I am allowed to upload.

Many thanks. P.s. I am on an iphone 7 and have trouble replying to threads so please bear with me as it is all trial and error. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JanetFizzCurtis (talk • contribs) 14:06, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

apologies for late reply, am having trouble navigating this system. the image I uploaded was a photo that I took of a photo that was on a small, paper flyer. the flyer advertised an event that the subject was holding. the subject's heirs are very supportive of me doing this work and promoting their Great Aunt, but they don't have any information about who took the photo that is on the flyer. it is a formal, head shot, as opposed to a casual, family shot. Usually all works from 1984 are copyrighted and non-free by default, and there is no exemption for Spanish government works other than legal texts. So you would not be able to upload such a brochure here without permission from the copyright holder. De728631 (talk) 15:37, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
If you just need it for citation purposes, there is no particular reason to have it on Commons. If you need to show it to someone, a site like Flickr that is a lot looser about copyright would be fine. - Jmabel ! talk 16:27, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Generally, Microsoft logos seem to be so simple that they are not copyrighted, so unless it is a very special logo, you can upload it here. Please note though that we already have a lot of Microsoft logos in Category:Microsoft logos and its subcategories. So it is likely that you don't need to upload your logo because it is already here. I don't understand this photo called "Warped and offset wall due to the fault-creep below the playground slide that is the surface evidence of Chihshang Fault slipping, which taken at the southeast corner of campus, Dapo Elementary School, in the afternoon on 4 December 2021" why it can't be uploaded.--Kai3952 (talk) 19:16, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

  • I don't know the specific answer, but strongly suggest a shorter title - the long text can go in the description, rather than the title. Longer titles on already existing files on Commons are often not fully visible depending on users' system, browser, and settings. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 19:29, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Page titles are limited to 255 bytes. See mw:Page title size limitations. – BMacZero (🗩) 20:04, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
I just changed the title to "Creep evidence of the Chihshang Fault below the playground slide as seen from the campus of Dapo Elementary School in the afternoon on 4 December 2021".--Kai3952 (talk) 20:10, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
It is not really 255, but [255 - <length of name spacename> - <lengths of talknamespaceextension> - <length of space character between namespace and talknamespaceextention> - <length of colon>]. A file name in german MW can be: 255 - length of "Datei_Diskussion:". The space for adding talk/Diskussion has always to be reserved (exception: Special-Namespace has no talk pages). The sortkey for pages is shorter (90 letters or something like that) --C.Suthorn (talk) 20:21, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

The blason ROTA Daniel refers to may be found here or here with slightly different types of indentation (either dancetty or properly indented), e.g. "...au chef d'azur soutenu d'une divise dentée d'argent et chargé d'un vase..." (a chief azure indented with a baseline argent and charged with a vase). The official website of the town has a tiny depiction of the arms in the footer, but you can't really see the details there. Lata Mangeshkar picture of 1942

Hello, I would like to know if there is any copyright issue on using this picture File:Lata Mangeshkar (Black and White Picture).jpg

It dates back to a 1942 film

Regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by Varoon2542 (talk • contribs) 23:14, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

If the image is from 1942, why did you state "28 September 1929" in the file description? Please note also that the file needs to be free in the United States of America too, because that is where the Wikimedia Commons files are hosted. So, an Indian film from 1942 would have been copyrighted in India until 2002. This means that the film would also have been copyrighted in the United States for 95 years after its first publication, so I think we cannot keep the image. In File:Memory break in slow motion.webm, I would like to have cut out the first empty 15 sec (resulting in a vid with about 2 seconds pause before the action starts), and also the end cut out from 0:55 to the current ending. I produced this myself in a complicated multi-stage process due to the extreme slo mo, but failed to cut it on my PC for various reasons, e.g., VirtualDub can not handle webm videos. More important, the Video Crop Tool in Commons, which I frequently use, fails on this particular video for me (hopefully, only for me...). How to fix duplicate images

Hello! I recently came across some images that are uploaded several separate times in slightly different versions, but not obviously linked in any way. (One set: 1, 2, 3; and another: 1, 2, 3). So I was wondering: is this kind of duplication a common thing that's okay, or does it need to be fixed? And if it does need to be fixed, how? Should they be linked to each other somehow? Should some be deleted? I don't have much of a sense of how things work on Commons (I mainly work on English Wikipedia), but I feel like there's something here that needs fixing. Are signatures of fictional characters copyrighted?

Hello there Commons!

I have a weird question: Are the signatures of fictional characters copyrightable?

Should I use the PD-signature tag on the signatures of fictional characters still under copyright?

--Quick Quokka [talk] 16:58, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

No this is because The signature is believed to be ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain because it falls below the required level of originality for copyright protection both in the United States and in the source country (if different). In this case, the source country (e.g. the country of nationality of the signatory) is believed to be ***Tag invalid. You must provide the source country as a parameter.***.
Note that this tag cannot be used on all signatures, as not all signatures are copyright-free.
See Commons:When to use the PD-signature tag for an explanation of when the tag may be used. Yahoot7 (talk) 19:40, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
Note this is what i think it is. Yahoot7 (talk) 19:41, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
I think I shouldn't do it, as it is the signature of a Disney character, and you know them, they sue you for even thinking about Disney characters. Quick Quokka [talk] 19:52, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
Text can be copyrighted in the US, but not writing styles or fonts. A signature that just has PD text has no copyright; e.g. "Minnie Mouse" written in no matter how fancy of hand writing would not be copyrighted.--Prosfilaes (talk) 18:58, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

@Kai3952: We obviously don't have such a category, since that link is red. However, those aren't flower balls, they are bows. You could add Category:Bows (knot) to them. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:48, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
Look at this photo: 北港義民廟義犬將軍像. A red object which looks most like "opening ceremony ribbon cutting flower ball" hanged on the chest of the stone statue. Can a bow knot really be like a flower ball?--Kai3952 (talk) 11:32, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
Yes, it can look like a flower since that is a special knotting technique. De728631 (talk) 11:52, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

Personality Rights Question

What to do about this image? I am sure the people in the picture do not have the slightest idea that the photographer uploaded their image to the worldwide internet. By German personality rights laws, this is illegal, so I am not sure a personality rights warning really is sufficient.

The article this was meant for by the uploader has been deleted for being about a clearly non-notable artist, so there is no sensible use for this image anyway.

Addressing the uploader unfortunately is useless. His German WP user talk page is full of attempts to reach him on the multiple issues of his files and articles, and he has not responded once. --217.239.4.223 00:19, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

My german is not good enough to read the article. This looks like a public art gallery, what are the laws for such situations?
The image could be cropped to remove the audience and then revdel the original version.
However, I am not certain if the artwork shown qualifies even for the very permissive COM:FOP Germany in which case it might be a copyvio. MKFI (talk) 08:13, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
In fact it does not qualify for FOP in Germany because FOP there does not apply to indoors venues. Nominated for deletion. De728631 (talk) 18:05, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Restore a file

I accidently overwrote File:Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld.jpg and don't see how to restore the previous image. MB (talk) 04:39, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi MB, as far as I can see, you didn't overwrite File:Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld.jpg but you did overwrite File:Nederlandse planetoiden.jpg. You can click the "revert" button against the preferred version to restore to that version. Thanks. --Magogre (talk) 06:44, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Is verbal permission acceptable for photo uploads

Is verbal permission acceptable for photo uploads? I asked an actor to upgrade his wiki page with more and relevant information. He was ok with this. Do I need it in writing? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JohnnyAvocado (talk • contribs) 14:26, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

The copyright holder would have to send a permission by email. Please note also that owning a copy of photo usually does not mean that the person depicted also owns the copyright for the photo. Unless it was transferred in a written contract, the copyright remains with the original photographer, so that is most likely the person that would have to contact our volunteer response team. De728631 (talk) 14:38, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
  • If someone can update or verify the copyright status of this historical photo, it would be appreciated: file:First Photo from the Surface of the Moon.jpg. The image credit states that the image is by the National Space Science Data Center of NASA (USA), which would put it under the public domain, except that the photo originates from the USSR government (which no longer exists) and not from the USA government. I would speculate that the JPG version of the photo released by NASA is a derivative work of the original image produced by the USSR, presumably with their permission, which would hopefully allow it to be in the public domain. Nicole Sharp (talk) 03:28, 28 February 2022 (UTC)
  • Never mind. I copied the copyright from file:foto de Venera 9.png. That seems to settle the question of the copyright status for photos from Soviet space probes (regardless of whether republished by NASA or not). Nicole Sharp (talk) 03:42, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

Loading commons from external server wiki.openstreetmap.org doesn't always load all commons hosted files

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Road_signs_in_the_Philippines - shows a lot of media and I can load all of that within a second and all the embedded media is shown without issues.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Road_signs_in_the_Philippines/sign_lookup_table - This page I created for OSM with the specific DPWH of the Republic of the Philippines ID's for the OSM project.. it links to the wikimedia commons yet for some reason - it doesn't load all the embedded media always. sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't and loading takes 20+ seconds

So is this a problem of the wiki page I created on OSM? Did I do something wrong? Is this because of the server of OSM, something wrong with the server? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrgenie (talk • contribs) 11:13, 23 October 2021‎ (UTC)

It seems to load slower on my mobile telephone too, perhaps Open Street Maps itself has an issue or there is a delay in communication between Open Street Maps and the Wikimedia Commons. This question could also be asked at the Technical Village Pump where people have more knowledge about such technical things. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:21, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

uploading a picture of a flag

Hi, I want to opload an image of our clubflag (VlagKleinNTSV.jpg). I get a message first that the name of the file is not specific enough, if I rename to more specific (Vlag Klein NTSV November 2021.jpg), is is not allowed in a broader context. The design/copyright of the flag is mine and the club. Can you help me out? @JoostDikken: , you could upload it but you need to verify it through the Commons:VRT to verify that you're in fact the designer of the flag. If you send them all the files they might assist you in uploading, be sure to pick a good file name and at (some) Wikipedia's you should disclose any possible conflict of interest that you have with the organisation before adding the flag there. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:27, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
@JoostDikken: Depending on the design of the flag, there might not be a copyright at all if it is very simple. So for example this NTSV image would not be copyrighted in the Netherlands. Is that the flag you would like to upload? De728631 (talk) 13:48, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Can works licensed under the GNU GPLv3 be uploaded?

I’ve looked at Commons:Copyright tags/GNU licenses, but it only lists GPLv2(.1)(+), and not GPLv3. Is the GPLv3 compatible with Wikimedia Commons? Theanswertolifetheuniverseandeverything (talk) 11:00, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

@Theanswertolifetheuniverseandeverything: They are not mentioned at that page, but we do have GPLv3 and GPLv3 only. The former also includes any later version of the GPL licence that may occur. Please note though, that GPL should not be the only licence if the work is your own creation and it is not a piece of software (see Commons:Licensing#GNU Free Documentation License). "Keeping warm" is a problem for me if I need to upload photos

Whenever it's cold outside, my hands and feet get cold, then it makes it's very hard to keep using my computer for edits on Commons. The only way I keep warm is by drinking water at 60 degrees Celsius but It not work very well. Because in Taiwan, cold weather would rarely get below 10 degrees Celsius. Is this ok for copyright ?

I have a small wanted ad (looking for a post) taken from the Gardeners’ Chronicle, May 31st 1913, page xv. It was published in Britain. I have no idea who counts as the 'author' in this case, so am unsure about the before 1920-something and author dead for more than 70 years exemption. Any suggestions ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dagodfrey (talk • contribs) 03:11, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

@Dagodfrey: Does this ad contain any images or is it just plain text? If it is just text, I would say it can be uploaded because there is no copyright since there is no creative authorship involved. As to the author, that would certainly be the person or company looking for the post. De728631 (talk) 15:36, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
The main text is:"Gardener (Inside, or Inside and Out); 7 years' good experience; excellent references; age 22; Bothy preferred. - Address, A. MOORE, Ashurst, Cowfold, near Horsham, Sussex." There are also some similar fragments of text from parts of the surrounding ads showing. Dagodfrey (talk) 03:51, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
And there no images of anything but text. Dagodfrey (talk) 03:52, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
Yes, that totally ok. You can upload such a snippet using the PD-text licence. And the author would then A. Moore. De728631 (talk) 14:18, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Well, if they are not your own images, you cannot choose the copyright or any free licence. Anything that you find on the internet for example has three possible copyright situations:
  • It is copyrighted and non-free, so you cannot use it. This is typically the case when no copyright information is given for recent images because they are automatically copyrighted.
  • It comes with a free licence like "Creative Commons by attribution" without any such restrictions like -NC or -ND. This is usually indicated by a text notice or by the Creative Commons icons. Those images can be uploaded at Commons and you need to quote the author and the licence found at the source website.
  • The last option is that an image is out of copyright because it is very old. This is a tricky issue because the copyright protection terms vary from country to country, and in the United States they are even dependent on the year of first publication. In most countries outside of the US though, the copyright ceases to exist 70 years after the death of the creator of a work.
There is also the possibility that an image was published anonymously which will also shorten the copyright protection term. De728631 (talk) 14:32, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
As a general rule you also need to consider that all uploads at Commons need to be free in the country of origin and in the United States, because that is where the Commons files are hosted. So, if you are unsure if the images in question can be uploaded, you may want to post a question with weblinks to the individual images at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. ISSUE 1: I wanted to show you all this category and make sure it's a good idea. I know that Washington's Birthday and Presidents' Day are the same thing legally, but I think having this category will make things more obvious and intuitive for users and people who want to add Presidents' Day materials to a category.
ISSUE 2: If the category is sustained, how should I link up the Wikidata Infobox? I can't figure out which QID to use. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 14:11, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello. As to your issue No. 1, we already have Category:Washington's Birthday which hosts the files for Presidents' Day. I can see though how that category content could be moved to Category:Presidents' Day since that appears to be the commonly used name for the event.
Regarding the Wikidata infobox, this can be sorted once we have reached consensus about the category name. De728631 (talk) 14:38, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, just let me know what you all think of this. At minimum, I think a redirect should be left at Category:Presidents' Day. I leave this in your capable hands. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 14:58, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Mislabelled image

This image is of writer Charles Farrar Browne who sometimes went by the pen name Artemus Ward. It is clear that this image is of a subject of early to middle years, whereas if Brady's studio could have photographed Artemas Ward, Jr., Ward would have been in his 90s, which this image subject clearly is not. When an image is uploaded and modified under the wrong subject name, how does one go about correcting this mistake? BusterD (talk) 00:06, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

  • @BusterD: Everything but the file name can be edited in the usual manner. Unless you have renaming privileges, use Rename and someone else can handle the file move.
  • Also, in this case the file is used several places in various Wikipedias, and insofar as you can communicate in the relevant languages it would be good to inform them that it is a wrong image, or make the relevant edits there themselves.
  • It looks like the error comes right from the Library of Congress, and it would be good to inform them of their error. Also, given that the LoC has an error, I would say that in editing the file page you should say that explicitly in the description and indicate the basis on which we are rejecting their identification. - Jmabel ! talk 02:45, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Is it possible to remove the metadata from a photo I uploaded?

Because it shows a name that I don't want it to, I wouldn't mind it if it was my name but it's a family member's name. Or at least can I able to upload the photo again? Megutim (talk) 21:25, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

✓ Done @Megutim: The only image in your list of uploads with a name in the metadata was File:4MEN (포맨) on a Interview for Studio FLO, December 2021.jpg. I removed that part and hid the original revision of the file. As a tip, you can do that too if you need to again: In Windows 10 (don't know if it works like this in any earlier versions), you can right-click the filename in the Explorer and choose "Properties", "Details". Then there's a link to remove properties and other information which lets you edit the metadata. De728631 (talk) 22:51, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much. I realized that after. Megutim (talk) 08:46, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Files with bespoke licenses that allow free use and reproduction

File:Hydrogen - A Renewable Energy Perspective.pdf has the following license terms: "Unless otherwise stated, material in this publication may be freely used, shared, copied, reproduced, printed and/or stored, provided that appropriate acknowledgement is given to IRENA as the source and copyright holder. Material in this publication that is attributed to third parties may be subject to separate terms of use and restrictions, and appropriate permissions from these third parties may need to be secured before any use of such material." In a (non-legal, I'm not a lawyer) practical sense, this is basically identical to CC BY terms. Can we host a file like this that more-or-less says, "this is provided with no restrictions on its use, all you have to do is credit us" but doesn't have an explicit CC or GFDL or particular libre/free culture license? —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:02, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

  • Similar issue for File:SS San Mateo.jpg, currently nominated for deletion. Source page says "Our photographs are public record and do not require permission for use. We ask that photographs are cited Courtesy of the Seattle Municipal Archives and that the identifier number is included." - Jmabel ! talk 02:48, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
    • I don't want to commit a copyfraud by saying it actually is licensed CC BY 4.0 when it's just basically kind of the same language (again, not a lawyer), but it seems like it's perfectly appropriate to share here, just with some bespoke wording. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:28, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Updating a video when the original is mp4

How do I upload a new version of a video when the original is mp4? Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 09:38, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello. First of all, please note that new versions with substantial changes should always be uploaded as a separate file instead of overwriting existing files. As to the file format, there is Commons:video2commons for an online tool and Help:Converting video for general advice. De728631 (talk) 09:55, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
De728631, the new version is an update adding more recent data, and I would not consider it substantially changed. Updates will be ongoing, and the use is expected to be identical, so same filename is preferred as this will allow it to be displayed on the same pages as the old version without having to edit those pages. Video2commons explicitly says it will not upload to an existing page. I will try Help:converting video as it seems I must convert before uploading. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 10:29, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Can someone help me find the source of these ads?

I saw this ad when I went to the mall today, and then I saw a similar ad with a QR code, instead of a loading screen. I also saw it on some billboards earlier, and I remember seeing it painted on a bus.

I searched "Coca-cola yellow ad", "Coca-cola new level freshness ad", "Coca-cola lemon ad", etc. but nothing turned up. Can anyone help me find a high-quality version of this image?

New info: Just found out it's an ad for Coca-Cola Zero Lemon. Still can't find source, though. --QuickQuokka [talk] 22:04, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Speedy deletion

Sure? Check up, please. Удивленный1 (talk) 22:43, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
@Удивленный1: As far as I can see, File:Vahdettin-culus2.jpg has not been deleted. Túrelio deleted File:Histoire des Othomans, Castellan Antoine - Hasseki, prince.jpg in December as a duplicate of File:Crown prince and first hatun.jpg, so he can probably explain why he chose to delete the earlier upload. The most common reason is that the earlier file has a lower resolution than the newer one. It looks like Deletion Notification Bot mangled the deletion reasons when copying them to your talk page, which is why they appear as red links. --bjh21 (talk) 22:07, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank You for answer. But I do not understand... If it is duplicate then resolution must be the same, isn't it? Удивленный1 (talk) 22:46, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
@Удивленный1: Not the way that our policies use the word. COM:CSD#F8 says "Exact or scaled-down duplicate". So if you upload a scaled-down version of a picture that's already on Commons, it can be speedily deleted. And if you upload a scaled-down version of a picture and someone later uploads the original (or at least a higher-resolution version), then the earlier upload might be deleted. --bjh21 (talk) 23:35, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Macedonian audio files

Hello,

There are 2,405 Macedonian audio files at Wikimedia Commons, automatically uploaded via LinguaLibre where they were recorded. I would now like to upload them to the corresponding pages on Wiktionary, but they are in .wav format, rather than .ogg, and they are not named in accordance with Wiktionary policy (each file name should have the form "language code-word.ogg", e.g. "mk-баба.ogg"). I have renamed all of them using my own programs and I would like to upload the new files to Wikimedia Commons so that I can subsequently upload them to Wiktionary, but I am not the recorder of any of the files in question. Do the actual recorders need to provide their consent for me to reupload their files, in keeping with the following instruction from the FAQ: "Please ask the copyright holder to send a permission statement to the address listed above. We require that owners make a clear statement that they release the image under a free license"? I am not sure whether this is necessary, since the recorders have already shared their files on Wikimedia Commons via LinguaLibre and have thereby made them publicly available for free use. I would just be adding files which are already here, except that they would be renamed. Martin123xyz (talk) 14:00, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello. I don't think that the file format or the file name matters for linking those files in Wiktionary. The very purpose of Commons is that Wikimedia projects can access our content without having to upload the files again at Wikipedia or Wiktionary. So a file link like should also work on Wiktionary. There is also no need to obtain a new permission because the free licenses are available at the file page here at Commons. De728631 (talk) 14:21, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the reply. I and other users have already verified that a link like works, but we need the file to be named mk-боровница.ogg instead, in keeping with Wiktionary:Audio Pronunciations. Furthermore, it's not just about the name - the .ogg format is compressed, so it takes up less space than .wav. For this reason, I wanted to reupload the converted and renamed files to Wikimedia Commons and then link them to Wiktionary. I wasn't talking about uploading separate files to Wiktionary. Martin123xyz (talk) 14:42, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
Ok, I see. Well, there's nothing wrong with having different file formats. When you upload the files, you may use Derived from as the source and enter the original WAV file name to that template like LL-Q9296 (mkd)-Bjankuloski06-боровница.wav. That is a common way to attribute derivative works of existing files at Commons, and it saves you the work of adding the permission, too. De728631 (talk) 15:06, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
@Martin123xyz: There are two things you should be aware of that might reduce your requirement to upload additional files. First, you can create redirects to files. So you could create a redirect at File:mk-боровница.ogg pointing to File:LL-Q9296 (mkd)-Bjankuloski06-боровница.wav simply by following that red link and entering #REDIRECT . Then references to File:mk-боровница.ogg on any project will actually get File:LL-Q9296 (mkd)-Bjankuloski06-боровница.wav. You can probably also create that redirect on a Wiktionary if that's more convenient, in which case it will only work on that Wiktionary, but will also be under the control of that Wiktionary. Second, the MediaWiki software automatically converts .wav files to ogg when playing them, so if I try to play File:LL-Q9296 (mkd)-Bjankuloski06-боровница.wav from a page on another project, my browser actually downloads a 14 kB Ogg file rather than a 100 kB WAV. Obviously storing the original .wav file on Commons takes a bit of space, but for files already on Commons that space is already in use and even deleting the file from Commons won't make it available again. --bjh21 (talk) 21:43, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you both for the replies. All things considered, especially the fact that the .wav files are already taking up space which cannot be freed even through their deletion, I think that it might be best to link to the audio files in their current form after all. If I do not get permission from Wiktionary's administrators, I will reupload the files using the derived template. Martin123xyz (talk) 08:41, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Can you upload pictures from news outlets to Wikimedia? Pink Saffron (talk) 21:39, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

@Pink Saffron: You can, but in <71 year old cases you may not; please see COM:NETCOPYRIGHT.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:05, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
It's a little more complicated than "less than 71 years" (copyright law varies from country to country) but the short answer is still "no." Almost always, such works will be copyrighted and no free license will be available. If you are dealing with U.S. material more than 95 years old (1926 or earlier), fine, use PD-US-expired, and if it's more than 120 years old from anywhere PD-old-assumed covers the case, but, really, even plenty of 71-year-old material is still in copyright, probably the bulk of it. - Jmabel ! talk 23:28, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

My submissions

Hi Commons,

I'm Trupti and my username is Kinitrupti. I have uploaded around 12 photos for the Wiki Loves Folklore competition. I got emails of edits on my photos and the depicts were removed for some photos by Wiki editors. I have couple of questions around that,

1. The depicts removed can they stay that way or I need to update new ones? 2. Are my submissions appropriate for the competition?

Thank you, Trupti — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kinitrupti (talk • contribs) 10:15, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

@Kinitrupti: Hello. I think it would be best if you asked the various editors on their user talk pages why they removed or changed your entries at the "depicts" field in the structured section. However, you do not need to enter new values or update the existing ones. However, some entries for "depicts" you made might not have been correct at all. E.g. I just removed an entry at File:Joss sticks in Sri Lanka.jpg, because the structured data item Workship on Dental Practice Management (Q93785018) (note the "k" in "workship" as opposed to "worship") refers to a scientific article about workings skill in dental practices, and is obviously unrelated to a picture of joss sticks.
I cannot tell you anything about the requirements for the folklore competition, but I hope I could help you with your question about the structured data and the "depicts" entries. De728631 (talk) 14:27, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

@Apollo468 and Jmabel: Per en:Draft:Grant Amato, the subject of the photo was arrested in Seminole County, Florida. Upload should be allowed here, as we have a template for that, PD-FLGov.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:29, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks! So government photos in Florida are consistently OK? - Jmabel ! talk 16:34, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Well, there are exceptions listed in a dropdown in the template, but none is a County or Sheriff's Office (or DPS or municipality or police department), so all Florida mugshots should be OK. SVG file translated via SVG Translator doesn't show language selector

Translated SVG that should display in Czech when clicked.

I've updated an existing SVG image (shown on right) by adding 3 languages in it - Czech, German, and English, while German is also an implicit language (the original used in the picture). What's strange is that the picture shows English language instead of the implicit one (which is German), and there's no language selector on that page. Link from a translated thumbnail doesn't display the selected language, eighter. How do I display language selector on the file page? Polda18 (talk pagecontributions) 02:18, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

Looking at the first one, it appears to be about 10 MB smaller than the original file at http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/il0951.photos.574580p/. Image type required

What type of images is necessarily required for this project? And do I need any article written by me to describe any uploaded image? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nicho afrika (talk • contribs) 06:04, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

  • @Nicho afrika: Please read COM:SCOPE and then come back here if you have more specific questions. No, not all images have to relate to a specific article in Wikipedia or elsewhere, they should all have descriptions and categories that provide context. - Jmabel ! talk 16:44, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
  • @Nicho afrika: Take me for example. On 20 February 2022 I was reported as violating COM:HOST because he thinks that my images are basically shots of random everyday things like roads, bricks, litter, clouds that are unlikely to ever be used for any educational purpose, and are therefore outside of Commons scope. And I tell you from my bitter experience not to be like me. Btw, of course, I have stopped uploading and promise not to do it again.--Kai3952 (talk) 16:28, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Assistance with downloading a video with subtitles from youtube

Hello! My name is Vyolltsa. I am the Project Manager with the Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group. I am not sure if this is the right place but I would like to download a video with subtitles in English that I created on youtube. I tried to download it myself and I was unsuccessful. Can you help me how to do it as I have never done it before? Also, I found this page but it is not helpful. Thank you in advance! Vyolltsa (talk) 17:13, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

@Vyolltsa: one method is detailed in Commons talk:Video2commons/Archive 1#v2c on Windows for Dummies. or you could google and find whatever "youtube downloader" that might work.
which video do you want to download? and do you plan to upload it to commons?--RZuo (talk) 09:39, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you @RZuo! I appreciate your help. I tried it and it worked. Yes, my first plan was to upload it on Commons. Vyolltsa (talk) 09:53, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
@Vyolltsa: in that case you dont need to download it by yourself. use com:v2c and it can convert youtube videos for you.--RZuo (talk) 10:02, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
@RZuoThank you! Vyolltsa (talk) 14:44, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
@Vyolltsa: If you created the video and uploaded it to YouTube, you can download it from the Creator Studio on the associated YouTube channel, if you don't have the video on your computer. You'll probably need to convert the video to .webm (VP9) or .ogv (Theora) before uploading it to Commons, which the easiest way to do it is described in already linked Video2Commons page above. Make sure the video is licensed under Creative Commons. While it may be your work and therefore you have full rights to upload it to Commons, it's generally not a good idea to have dual licenses for a single video. YouTube does offer a license under Creative Commons, in addition to the Standard YouTube License, which licenses the video for YouTube only. I'm not sure if it's generally allowed to change a license of an already uploaded video, you may give it a try. It may be possible to change it from Standard YouTube License to Creative Commons, as it's releasing it under a free licence, but it may not be possible otherwise as it may render any previously allowed redistributions illegal. I'm gonna be honest, I'm no expert in licensing, but my common sense tells me that license is something that shouldn't be meddled with once the creative work is out.
