Empty railway station categories deleted by Yann

Please restore the following pages:

Reason: Speedy Deletion Criteria clearly state "If a category is empty and is obviously unusable, unlikely to be ever meaningfully used, it may be speedily deleted."

In this case the categories relate to: 1) a physical, identifiable location 2) some of these locations are on heritage registers and could have photos uploaded from WLM 3) Railway stations are of general interest enough and identifiable enough that it is quite likely photos will be uploaded at some point 4) existed on wikidata and was correctly linked through

Thus I'd contend the criteria for speedy deletions has not been met as the categories are usable and able to meaningfully used going forward. Therefore the deletions should be reversed and edits on Wikidata also reverted.

It's quite time consuming to create categories on commons when a file is first uploaded and link through to wikidata properly. Thus if a category already exists and is linked properly and relates to something as obvious as a railway station I'd argue they should be left in place. This would seem to be supported by the wording of the current policy. Nickw25 (talk) 09:22, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

  • You’re right as rain, but good luck with that. My experience is that some admins swear by this holy rule and will delete any empty category on sight, regardless of any considerations. (Curiously, some of those admins wont even consider deleting galleries no matter how unmantained and shabby, because another hallowed proclamation states that galleries and categories should co-exist.) -- Tuválkin 10:04, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
  • If these are useful, i.e. not empty, then just recreate them. Otherwise, I don't see the point to have empty categories lying here forever... Regards, Yann (talk) 11:35, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
    • If they had content (multiple parent categories, Wikidata link, templates, other info present, etc.), they are not easy to just recreate. Empty categories can serve the same purpose as redlinks on Wikipedia -- hey we need pictures. The speedy criteria just changed to avoid deletions of categories like these.  Support Carl Lindberg (talk) 10:51, 28 September 2018 (UTC)
  • The trouble is the Policy does not define usefulness by if they are empty or not. Nor were they there "forever", hardly there for days from what I can tell. One could go over to the Policy page and have a discussion about this of course, although what is the point of discussing the policy if the current policy is not followed and it is just dismissed when when it's raised. Having spent 5 minutes reading here I didn't actually expect the categories to get restored, although I still think it's right to call it out because the deletion was not in the spirit of the policy. It seems to be admin-ing for the sake of admin-ing and editing for the sake of edit counts. Each of those category pages that no longer exist still have a P373 set over at Wikidata, which is now a broken link. When someone does re-upload a file (it will happen at some point for entities as concrete as places, people, things) there is probably less chance of it getting categorised properly than if the category was just left there. If another user does recreate the category the links are only going to be restored if its spelled exactly the same way, which is no means guaranteed. If they aren't spelled the same way it makes the content more difficult to find. Deleting it out of seemingly little more than what I'd consider a misguided desire for "neatness" just breaks things the more tightly projects become integrated and makes things messy if someone doesn't have their time travel glasses on to recreate it exactly as it was when the time comes. Finally, I can understand that some empty categories are more worthy of deletion than others, for instance those that are empty and exist in isolation. However if a category is properly integrated with wikidata and if volunteers have put time in to categorise the category and link it through to other WMF projects properly and it represents a concrete entity then the threshold for deletion should be much higher than simply "it's empty therefore its not useful". Close this off if you will, but if the overall point is it's worth calling out because the deletion wasn't in the spirit of the Policy and it's not particularly respectful of the effort required to link everything through properly in a cross-project way.Nickw25 (talk) 09:47, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
  •  Weak support I agree categories about 'singular' objects (a town, a monument, a building, a person,...) crosslinked to wikidata may have some usefulness. On the contrary, an empty, unlinked and 'plural' Category:European men looking right drinking soda while watching TV doesn't make much sense. Deleting a category breaks the stable connection between wikipedia article, wikidata item and a "stable, properly categorised and already created" place where images about that concept can be uploaded (specially by newbies). Said that, this approach would leave the door open to massively creating "empty categories from the scratch". What would be the difference? Do we want that? Strakhov (talk) 19:00, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

about deletion of AFFICHE-URSINHO.jpg

Hi I m Stéphane Olijnyk, the director of the film called Ursinho. This poster is not a private thing. It has been made to promote the film. It's a movie poster. So there is no copyright on this poster. Why will there be a copyright for a poster made to promote a movie I directed ? I don't understand. Could you explain to me how a poster is copyrighted ? Thanks and Regards. Stéphane OLijnyk — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ursinhorio (talk • contribs) 18:10, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

@Ursinhorio: In order to upload media to Wikimedia Commons, content should have been distributed under a free license (allowing derivative works and commercial use) or entered in the public domain (read Commons:Copyright rules by territory). That's the reason why we do not have the poster of Avengers: Infinity War stored in Commons (a very public thing made to promote that film too). Because copyright belongs to Marvel Studios or Disney, I don't know. Aditionally, we have no proof "Ursinhorio" account is managed by "Stéphane Olijnyk", but your word here. When it comes to movies, these rights often belong to the production company. Anyway, a permission (legally binding) emitted by copyright owner, whoever they are, must be sent to Commons:OTRS. Regards. Strakhov (talk) 19:30, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Category deleted by A.Savin

I may expect a technical (includes logically) explanation about Edit-Chaos and mobbing work Removed as per WMF Privacy Policy --A.Savin 13:36, 26 September 2018 (UTC)ǃ It´s manifold documented that his only aim is a personal revange. (2 years old personal conflict). How he can block me the third time, only by using categories from my side, with unlogic lies? Only one, and the actual example is Category "Haaghof" Monument-ID D-5-75-145-26, A.Savin erased the automatically generated cats from wiki commonsǃ And usesd this as argument (orphaned categories) to block me three days. Himself he added a dish to same cat, nothing to do, with buildings or WLM 2018. Funny way created by me, and the only used cat from my side. The upload formular wanted always a category... (And this was named by A.Savin as the point for blocking, arghh) - Nobody wil find any sense, only harassment. He still destroyed the constructive work from other admins (not me) and Comscat from wikipedia to Source of picture gallery in commons. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Leichendorfer_Mühle is still not reconstructed in Wikipedia. Removed as per WMF Privacy Policy --A.Savin 13:36, 26 September 2018 (UTC) --Hans-Jürgen Neubert 19:10, 25 September 2018 (UTC)(talk)

@Hans-Jürgen Neubert: I assume that you request only to undelete Category:Leichendorfer Mühle. If you have a more general issue regarding a dispute that needs to be solved, start by having a look at Commons:Dispute resolution. Thuresson (talk) 23:48, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
@Thuresson: Not at all, but it´s a very positive step. A.Savin started the Dispute today (see my discussion page), like sniffing my buiness IP (not a proxy) he´s blacklisted since weeks on my personal page. If you will be so kind and reconstruct the old categories, like last time with another four examples, pls. check out the content from older versions (before A.Savin changed) You will find out, that I never generated a empty Category.

::"Ensemble Rondel Dambach (Fürth) for Commonscat", and the only contributor was "Hans-Jürgen Neubert" " This means EVERY new item without pictures are disabled for me, only me? The first image is at the beginning, the only one, that´s the only logical truth and unfeasible before other ones follows the invitation. What we all need and expect is why admins delete autocategory from wiki commons? The photographer (and mostly others ask for more cats) is not adding themǃ And how A.Savin could block me for categories? Other admins added (Achim55, Holger1959, RussBot, Rosty, Altsprachenfreund etc) - he destroyed the link from wikipedia to Commons(COMSCAT/Commonscat) without checking existing content.--Hans-Jürgen Neubert 17:16, 26 September 2018 (UTC)(talk)

@Hans-Jürgen Neubert, I have now restored the last version of Category:Leichendorfer Mühle, as there was at least 1 image in it, and created a link to Wikidata. However, if for any reason the currently only 1 item in this cat disappears, it may be possibly deleted again. And that is not because anybody has something against you, it's just our policy. So, the risk would be smaller there were more items in this cat. --Túrelio (talk) 19:18, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

File:Sarmaticus Astronomus Nicolas Copernicus c 1543.jpg

This image had 2 Public Domain references (one of them is Wikipedia!!!) containing the very same information buried in much text of the Free e-book by Google that Wiki is citing Corpus Reformatorum (details below), yet my original illustration with proper embedded and explicit references through Wikipedia itself (and presently on Wikipedia) was deleted evidently maliciously, diversely, and plurally, due to the fact that subsequently also in the article the "editors" deleted all references to Polish Sarmatian Astronomer Nicolas Copernicus which is a fact of history through a number of other references, which the "editors" also deliberately deleted (about half of my references of books or articles published in the last 500 years on Copernicus)!

The File:Sarmaticus Astronomus Nicolas Copernicus c 1543.jpg that I have created, in fact specifically is cited in the Public Domain through Google e-books, and on Wikipedia, as and at Corpus Reformatorum:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corpus_Reformatorum The Corpus Reformatorum online CR 4 - 1837

Corpus reformatorum, Volume 4 C.A. Schwetschke, 1837

You need to scroll down to the cited page 679!

Which was stated in the deleted File:Sarmaticus Astronomus Nicolas Copernicus c 1543.jpg ... “Page 679 of vol. IV of Corpus Reformatorum, containing a letter (of Oct. 16, 1541) from Philip Melanchton to a Mr. Burcard Mithobius, with first historic reference to "that Sarmatian astronomer who is trying to stop the sun and move the earth." ... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rosetecscc (talk • contribs) 09:59, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

All of the oblasts in Russia are titled on Commons by their centre and not by their name, the exceptions are when the name of the central city has changed and the name of the oblast has not. Sverdlovskaya oblast previously had Sverdlovsk as its centre, but now Sverdlovsk has changed its name to Yekaterinburg, but Sverdlovskaya oblast did not become Yekaterinburgskaya oblast. However, it would be useful to have redirects from the incorrectly named oblasts derived from their centre, because many people outside of Russia may be unaware of this mismatch, and even when even when you are aware, it will make it easier to use hotcat tool. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 07:16, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

What is the problem? The photographer sent the requested confirmation to OTRS, why is the new image not on?

davidschaeferch (talk) 13:14, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

  •  Oppose If a free license has been sent to OTRS, then the file will be restored automatically when and if the email is received, processed, and approved. Note that OTRS, like Commons, is entirely staffed by volunteers, and, also like Commons, is shorthanded, so it may be close to 7 days before the email is processed and the file is restored.
If the message was sent to the English language version of OTRS and the email has been properly received there the sender will receive an automatic reply with the ticket number. If the sender has not had a reply, please check that it was sent correctly and try again. Other language versions may or may not provide the automatic reply.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:48, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Reason: deleted by P199 because "text-only document, out of scope". COM:SCOPE: "The content is essentially raw text; such files are not considered media files. Note that scans of existing books, reports, newspapers etc of historic or other external significance are not excluded on this ground, even if they contain no images."

This also creates a problem. Wikisource:es:Special:Upload is only available for Administradores. And Wikisource:Special:Upload is instructing users to upload basically nothing.

The files in question contain a scan of a letter from w:Eloy Alfaro (educational no doubt and copyright expired no doubt). But it's just that, a scan. There is no text to copy paste to Wikisource. We must be able to host this somewhere? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:39, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

For now I've uploaded the document to https://openload.co/f/JCam1WUXwVs/Mensaje_del_Presidente_about_General_Morales.pdf. Having to look at lonely Slavic beauties in my area waiting for love with older men and diet pills to download your educational content is.. well, it is what it is. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:56, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
  •  Support this is a scan of a historic document that could be transcribed at Wikisource. It’s exactly the sort of text Commons should be hosting. clpo13(talk) 20:37, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
@Clpo13: one detail just to be clear: it is a scan of a few pages from a book in which the letter was reprinted. But it's still only a scan. Even if/when this is written out in text on Wikisource, it will be nice to have the scans as they can't be modified/vandalised easily. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 11:10, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Restored per nom and Clpo13. Useful for Wikisource. Apparently in the public domain. Allowed by COM:SCOPE ("scans of existing books, reports, newspapers etc of historic or other external significance are not excluded on this ground, even if they contain no images"). Public domain
This file is in the public domain because This is effectively in the public domain; since it was produced by the Communist Party of Peru (a.k.a Shining Path '), any copyright would belong to a terrorist organization and would be legally unenforceable. Note that PCP is subject to U.S. sanctions [1], under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA, 50 USC Chapter 35). As such, it is believed that the corresponding U.S. copyright is "blocked property." <! - They could of course decide to kneecap copyviolaters ->

Good Morning,

Recently Ronhjones  User deleted a picture I posted on Wikipedia Commons after he deleted other versions of the same image published with my consent. I'm the author of the picture and I authorized its use to the user "The Simorgh".

The last edition of the picture in question was licensed as "my own work" then because when you search the pictures origins on google you can find that's my work like on this link bellow where the picture is published in black and white.

https://www.eyeem.com/u/antoinehomayounfard

I also allowed it's use by a newspaper L'Union that published an article about Dr Homayoun Fard last year. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Antoine Homayounfard (talk • contribs) 03:51, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

so I don't understand why Ronhjones  insists so much to make this image deleted in every way.

Did I do something bad trought its publication ? How can I contribute with this image in correct conditions please ?

Thanks as advance.

Sincerely yours.

  • @Vamsikrish1331: Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. The original licence at the upload was {{Cc-bysohailakbar-3.0-de}} which does not exist. I suppose {{cc-by-3.0-de|Sohailakbar}} was intended instead. I'm sick of this deletion of Doug Friedline's photo bullshit. 1) It was a PR photo that Doug had made of himself. He paid to have photo taken and he had the copyright to this image of him. It isn't an inadvertent photos, so the copyright does not belong to the photographer. 2) It is a photo that Doug made publicly available to the press on multiple occasions. It is in the public domain. It was his chosen image of himself for his political business. 3) Doug gave me, in person, a copy -- not an electronic copy but actual physical photograph, which I still have -- and he authorized me, verbally, to use it, without any qualifications or limits one what I was permitted to do with it. 4) Doug was (and posthumously is) a figure of some importance in our national political history and he deserves to have a photo on his wikipedia entry. PLEASE RESTORE IT!!! Blyden (talk) 13:39, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

Would you please explain why do you believe that this "photo bullshit" is in public domain. Simply asserting that "photo bullshit" is in public domain is not enough, neither is saying that it is publicly available (you can have public domain work that is not publicly available and you can have publicly available work that is not in public domain, two things are similar only in that they share one word in their title). Please keep in mind that simply using capital letters is insufficient in this case. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 11:25, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

In Commons:Deletion_requests/Class_rings, File:AggieRingCase.jpg was nominated for deletion and accepted by the fact that these were copyrighted derivative works. The wrinkle in this one (and this one only) is that the Aggie Ring is definitely NOT copyrighted. Unlike most class rings, which are designed on an annual basis for each class at a school (with MANY having customizations on them), Aggie Rings have effectively been the same since 1935. The only change was when the school's name changed in 1965 (from the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas to Texas A&M University), which a) would not have been enough to generate a new copyright, b) even if it were, I can find no evidence of a registered copyright. For works that received their copyright before 1978, a renewal had to be filed in the work's 28th year with the Copyright Office for its term of protection to be extended and c) even if the copyright was indeed registered, there are rings that existed that did not include the (c) copyright symbol, a requirement at that time.

It is worth noting that portions of the manufacturing process were patented as well.

This was a simple photograph of the cover of an Australian passport, and was presumably deleted because of a lack of permission from the person who made the photograph. However if we accept that the Australian passport cover design is public domain (e.g. as applied to File:Australian Passport Cover of P - Series.jpg), then this file too should have the same public domain licence - taking a simple photograph of an existing work does not meet the threshold of originality. @Blyden: Can you provide a copy of the written document in which the copyright transfer took place? It was deleted due to a misalignment with the OTRS permissions review and the copyright holder's permission release consent, which was done according to policy.

The copy holder has since resubmitted a release using the email template.

Thank you! Hexatekin (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 18:48, 10 October 2018‎ (UTC)

— Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 19:58, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
  •  Comment File restored by OTRS member. The description still links to an already closed deletion request, is it acceptable to edit the page to remove it in this case? ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 11:29, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

I discovered that the file was deleted because somebody decided that it "These files look professional and I doubt whether the copyright holder has given permission to release it under a free license." It looks professional because it is professional - I am a professional - and I am the copyright holder. I chose to make it freely available via Wikimedia Commons because I was asked to provide it (and several other figures) for a web page in support of a podcast that I recorded. As I indicated clearly in the text I supplied with it: This is an original diagram; a modified, black-and-white version of it was published as Text-fig. 12.3 in: Horne, D.J. 2011. Ostracods. In Batten, D.J. (ed.), English Wealden Fossils, 125–137. The Palaeontological Association, London, Field Guides to fossils 14, ix + 769 pp. It differs from the published version (to which the Palaeontological Association holds the copyright) in several aspects of layout and detail as well as the use of colour.

If I can get this image reinstated on Wikimedia Commons I will then go through the same procedure with others that were provided in support of the podcast but have since been deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidjhorne (talk • contribs) 21:04, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

This is the kind of information that should have been presented in the original DR linked above.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 10:42, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
Comment Deletion of files is not here to penalise the behaviour (or lack there-of) of the user, it is to determine if the file is suitable. Yes, it would be great if this information were provided by the uploader when the deletion request was still open, but it is not any longer. Suggesting that the user needs to travel back in time and leave this information then is not useful. I want to assume good faith and try to read the comment by Jeff G. as a statement of frustration about the directionality of time in our universe and inability to travel back rather than an argument why some file should not be restored. Now, about the file in question: I believe that the information provided here is enough to Restore even if we need to examine it further afterwards. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 04:20, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
@Gone Postal: Yann solicited opinions. I gave one (mostly to instruct this uploader and others). I did not !vote support or oppose due to lack of information. I would like to see opinions from those involved in the DR, so I am pinging @Basvb and Jcb.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:31, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
I apologise for my misundersanding regarding what you were saying. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 11:12, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Please restore these following files because they are my own work, I am 100% that they are my work and were only available on Wikimedia Commons:

Restore If you read the user's talk page I think that the situation is quite clear. It is rather difficult to understand what to say and where to say it when your files are nominated. I have actually suffered the same problem when I first started (and 2 of my files were deleted, because the closing admin didn't bother to check if there was the response on my talk page). I do think that HutheMeow should take some time to become familiar with the policies here, but I also understand that I still find pages that are about how things operate on this site and quite often I am shocked that they are so well hidden. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 04:47, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

--HutheMeow (talk) 04:45, 12 October 2018 (UTC) The statement I wrote that "No uploads by this user can be used or reproduced without permission" didn't mean people to use or reproduce my uploads if not going to upload on internet, I only meant that as use and reproduce the same photos I uploaded on Wikimedia Commons without permission (uploading on internet without permission), and I am never going to restore the statement "No uploads by this user can be used or reproduced without permission" because its inappropriate, and hasn't been written on my user page to make anyone feel negative. Please give me another chance to have my uploads restored because I will follow all rules on Wikimedia Commons. --HutheMeow (talk) 04:45, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

  •  Comment For context this user is a child who has currently only uploaded selfies 🤳🏻, maybe his father is one who operates the account and in good faith tries to help his son, but I don't think that they understand the scope of Wikimedia Commons all too well. I would like to request some tutoring for this user (as my time is very limited) and preferably by a Nepalese person who could explain to them in their language what is and isn't acceptable for Wikimedia Commons. I hope that they understand that this isn't "a selfie storage" system and that they will just use the selfies they have now for their user page (which may need some trimming, but contact details should be allowed if they will contribute here productively). I hope that someone interested in tutoring this user will read this. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 14:25, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

Oppose Wikipedia-only licences are not permitted. Please see COM:L. In short only the licences that are "free" are allowed, they must grant 4 freedoms: 0) Freedom to use the document anywhere and anyhow (including commercially), 1) Freedom to copy and distribute the document (including in cases where you ask to be paid for distribution), 2) Freedom to modify the document, 3) Freedom to publish the modified version of the document (including commercial publication). In addition to that there is already one free licence that has suffered the fate of being disallowed: GFDL (all versions). ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 06:58, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

If the image was taken by you, then you can release it under the free licence. If it wasn't you must obtain permissions to use it from the person who took it. Deleted despite consensus to keep at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Muzeobranie 2008 - Chabówka (3986864264).jpg. Photo is in-scope and educationally useful. clpo13(talk) 16:30, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

Oppose - despite two 'keep' votes, the picture is blatantly out of scope. The main focus is on random visitors, not on the locomotive. We have several good pictures of this machine in Category:Ol12-7. Jcb (talk) 16:34, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
Are administrators allowed to overrule consensus regarding what is and isn't in scope? clpo13(talk) 16:37, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
Two comments is not a concensus and a DR is not a vote. Admins are not just allowed, we are required to close a DR based on policies and the validity of arguments, instead of closing them based on counting votes. Jcb (talk) 16:42, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
That's too bad that Commons allows such supervotes. clpo13(talk) 16:44, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
This is true for copyvio, but for scope (in cases where it just comes down to opinions) a DR essentially is a vote. All voters have accounts in good standing (and no socks). Nominator votes delete, Jcb votes delete, clpo13 votes keep, Odysseus1479 votes keep. No concensus to delete → no delete. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 13:09, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
Btw, if something is verifiably in scope or the agenda of the voters is questioned, an admin would be allowed to overrule "delete" votes. But not overrule genuine "keep" votes. If you don't like it, don't look at it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 14:40, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
Support This DR did not run for a long time requiring it to be closed right away. Of course and admin can override the smaller consensus if the consensus of the whole project is more valid or where the law demands it (copyright grounds), but this wasn't such case. If an admin completely disagrees on the vote in the case like this it would be more appropriate to cast one's opinion on the DR itself. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 17:21, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
Weak support I disagree with the deleting admin that the photo focuses on people: people are accidental here. However, I would welcome longer discussion concerning scope: maybe there are indeed better alternatives. @Clpo13: What you can see on this photo that is mission from other photos in this category? Ankry (talk) 18:13, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
Comment I have temporarily undeleted the file to facilitate the discussion. De728631 (talk) 22:16, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
Support - to me it seems to be obviously on-scope for Category:Ol12-7. There's no other equivalent picture on that category, with such a short distance from the machine, and from that angle. Should not have been deleted.-- Darwin Ahoy! 12:28, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
Support I find the argument from Odysseus1479 on the DR interesting: "the foreground people provide a sense of scale". While I personally can also tell the scale quite well from the other photos, I can imagine other people who are not that good at judging scale find this helpful. Also, some photos from that category will likely disappear in the future. I refuse to tell why. Though just saying this probably means it'll happen now. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 12:59, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

✓ Done: Plausible arguments why this file is in scope are made. Though I would kindly request not to flame the discussion with use language like "supervote". --Natuur12 (talk) 15:43, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

These two files were deleted as "out of scope", having been marked for deletion by an editor (Castillo blanco}} who seems to have very little judgment, and a mere interest in emptying old uncategorized media cats at all costs. Those are memorial plaques, mentioned at w:James Metzger, and easily documented using the most basic google search. Both of them were properly categorized. No explanation was provided for why such an obviously on scope image would be "out of scope", but they were still deleted. @Jcb: pinging the admin who deleted them, for an explanation.-- Darwin Ahoy! 09:15, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

I am sorry, but not all pictures of random thinks are in scope. These two picture are not, IMHO. I could grab a camera and take 100 pictures of random houses and trees in my village within the next 15 minutes. I could upload them all and categorize them properly with the name of the village. Some would argue that the pictures would be in scope because we have proper location information, but luckely the vast majority of admins does not. Not sure why you are targetting Castillo blanco specificly, I agree most of the time with their nominations. Jcb (talk) 15:01, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
@DarwIn: These particular images were unused in Wikipedia. So, to convince us they are in scope, you need to convince use that they are of educational value. I agree with Jcb here. Ankry (talk) 17:38, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
@Ankry and Jcb: Those are memorial plaques documenting the naming of Hofstra women's lacrosse locker room in honor of James C. Metzger '83 in recognition of his support to the women's lacrosse program. As far as I know there are not other pictures like this here, but even so, I would find quite unusual deleting something so obviously on scope, as memorial plaques commemorating the efforts of someone promoting women equality on Sports. It really boggles my mind how is this being compared to "random houses and trees".-- Darwin Ahoy! 12:24, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
I know dozens of buildings only in my villages with such memorial plaques, most of them naming someone who did an effort in something. Jcb (talk) 14:48, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
You just said it would only take you 15 minutes to take photos of them, so why aren't you doing just that? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 15:36, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
Support Plaques were made for an effort that's referenced on a Wikipedia article. A plaque for some random person who rescued a cat from a tree may not be in scope, but I believe the plaques mentioned here are. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 15:36, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

RE:Herbert Mensah PR.2.jpg.jpg[edit]

Although the picture used had been published earlier by some news sites, as a personal biographer of the subject/copyrights owner, I obtained this portrait directly from the subject/owner whose personal photographer shared the portrait with the media sometime ago. It is on this basis that the copyrights of the portrait are not attributed to any other source. (as I am directly authorised by the owner/subject to use in Wikipedia). I, therefore, want to appeal the deletion of the portrait and request urgent undeletion. The subject/owner of the copyright/photographer is prepared to attest to this in writing. Subject insist on this portrait of him be his profile face on Wikipedia for now based on which I am making this urgent appeal. Please reconsider your decision. Thank you.

Colleen Ballinger doesn't use this. This appears in the Google search results because https://twitter.com/honeymoondix replied to something she said. Honeymoondix mentioned Pete Davidson three times in the past two years: today, 14 October and 30 September. So they likely also switched their icon recently. Twitter icons can't be dated anyway.

The older one is a completely different image, copied from [7], credited to Steve Granitz—WireImage, and uploaded by Hmaxine. Don't you agree that the smaller version (see links above) is a selfie? To me, it is quite clearly taken by Pete Davidson himself. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:59, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Daniel (the composer of the album and owner of the artwork) has sent through his approval and permission for this artwork to be on wikipedia numerous times, he has again sent an e-mail to Permissions - Wikimedia Commons to authorise this. Daniel owns the rights to the images, logos, and of course the music. The album is in stores across the UK and available worldwide so it is frequently used within the media. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chrysler2012 (talk • contribs) 12:21, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

  •  Oppose per COM:PCP. Never claimded to be the author, of course it is not a self-portrait. I wrote: It is a picture OF myself, taken FOR myself (not BY). @Hanka Kliese: Exactly how did you acquire it?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:28, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

The picture was taken on my behalf as part of my 2014 election campaign. I own all the rights. Otherwise I obviously wouldn't have used it. You can find it on my website, borchures and so far and so on. I can hardly imagine how anyone vould have gotten to the impression, that it wasn't a picture I own the rights to. As there have been multiple spurious changes to my article page recently, I assume that to be a part of it and kindly ask you to restore the page. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hanka Kliese (talk • contribs) 15:42, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

Neither did I touch the biography, at least not since June 2017. The changes were made by another person and not in the biography part. Under the point "Sonstiges" there were added some false statements and I reversed them. To assure maximum transparency, I did this under the real name (as always), which cannot be said about the person who introduced the fake parts. Of course I didn't want to imply this person was you. Thank you for you help, I'm hoping the damage done to the article will soon be repaired. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hanka Kliese (talk • contribs) 16:17, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

The problems regarding the content of the article are now set to be fixed within the next few days. So will it also take some more days till the original picture is back in place and everything will then be set back to the repaired version at once? I didn't hear anything yet from the person you contacted in your last comment and I just realised that the picture is still the wrong one, so I wanted to check back for that matter. Thank you in advance.

This is not how copyright law works "Otherwise I wouldn't have used it" would be laughed out of court room, because "Otherwise all copyright infringers would use that defence". Now, I am not saying that you are infringing the copyright, but you must provide evidence that you hold the copyright. You are the copyright owner if 1) You pressed the shutter, even if remotely, 2) You acquired from the person who pressed the shutter, 3) You have set up the camera, chose the aperture, exposure, white balance, timing, and focus, after that you have signalled another person to take the photo, and were the one who handled the image afterwards (note that in this case it is important that the decision to press the shutter was actually yours, you had to signal that other person and not rely on that person's judgement of when to take the photo, saying "Take a photo when I am ready" is precisely what would make them and not you the author, since they make a creative decision). So could you please explain how the image was taken. Ignoring the conversation and repeating the claim that you own the copyright will not convince anybody to restore it. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 10:04, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

As I wrote above: "The picture was taken on my behalf as part of my 2014 election campaign. I own all the rights." And because I understand the copyright concerns, of course otherwise I obviously wouldn't have used it. By that, I mean, I would of course never upload a picture of which I don't own the copyright to. That is what I wanted to say with this statement. What is laughable about that point remains unclear to me.

So it obviously - as probably in almost every case with a portrait picture of a politician - would be number 2 of the options you put out. 1 and 3 would be types of "taken BY myself" which was ruled out way up front in this discussion. It was a portrait shooting for a campaign. Maybe it becomes clear, by also repeating: "Never claimded to be the author, of course it is not a self-portrait. I wrote: It is a picture OF myself, taken FOR myself (not BY)."

Hello once again, just checked and the image is still the wrong one. Has there been any progress in restoring the picture? So far I unfortunately didn't get an answer. I also sent the permission to use the picture to the "permissions"-e-mail-adress a while ago, no reaction from there as well. Compared to how fast the erasure went, I would really appreciate if the restoral would also move up. In the meantime, as I'm still trying to get a sense of the very specific rules of this encylclopedia, I would also like to ask if there has there been reported a substantiated copyright complaint? I can't imagine why anyone would bring that up, as there was nothing wrong with the picture. Or is it the same as with the changes made to the content of the article itself: changes can be made pretty arbitrarily, without proof and only reversing the damage done takes a lot of time and proof with all the discussions connected to this? Thanks in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hanka Kliese (talk • contribs) 13:10, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

@Hanka Kliese: The photo author (photographer) is the photo copyright owner by default. And if the copyright owner is somebody else, there is some contract (eg. the photographer's job contract, copyright transfer contract, etc.) that states so. And we need en evidence that such a contract exist; in written form as required by copyright law. We understand that such contracts cannot be made public and their evidence cannot be proven in on-wiki discussion. So we have the OTRS system for this purpose. Unfortunately, our OTRS team is small and overloaded, so processing emails sent to OTRS requires time. Few months, now. And, basing om information you provided, I see no other way to restore your photo that providing all the copyright-related information including your written permission to OTRS, verifying the provided information by an OTRS agent, and the agent's request to undelete it. Even if you have rights to use the photo in your campaign or for other purposes, this does not mean that you are the copyright owner. And only the actual copyright owner may make the photo freely licensed.  Oppose undeletion at this point. Ankry (talk) 17:14, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi,

The first time I uploaded this photo, the details were correct (I edited the licence agreement correctly). Next it was starred and I got a message it would be deleted if I didn't update the licence agreement. I did so, within the time period. Now it is deleted again.

I just cannot understand how Wiki cannot get this right. Does it not want our photos? How is google able to get this right?

Please can you give an explanation as to why my photo is deleted, and please undelete it and add it back to my page.

Yours sincerely,

Thanks Jeff G. I actually have a job and so I only use wikipedia once every couple of years. I dont have time to read through all these screeds of impenetrable documents and licence stuff. It is NOT very user friendly for people like us. I'm so tired of being treated like a criminal by trigger-happy wiki police, when I'm just trying to make information available. I have no conflicts of interest, I just consider it community service. I see there are MANY people who feel the same as me. Could you please help me? I cannot understand what is going on. I have several issues:

1) One of my images has just been deleted. I thought I jumped through all the (complex) licencing hoops years ago. A few weeks back I got a note to say my photo is going to be deleted. I went on and (thought) I did what they instructed. However now the photo is deleted. How do I fix this? I'm so frustrated.
2) I went on to add historical information about the Tokai Arboretum, however wiki said that I took all info from a website and now is investigating copyright issues. However I have full permission to use this text, and said as much. Now the next thing is to try sort this out. But in the meanwhile, Wikipedia (wikipolice!) seem to have blocked the page. How am I supposed to get a chance to get all the admin in order if they just jump to conclusions so quickly?
3) Now I see that another page that I made about 2 years ago (Tokai Park), has also been closed, and it simply states : "under copy-right investigation". What the hell does this have to do with anything? Why has this page been affected?

If you could please help me with any of these issues I would be so grateful. I've put a lot of after-work-hours time in and I really just wanted to do a good thing. Yet I'm treated like a criminal. I cannot understand why Wikipedia is so stringent, when Google for example is happy to accept any of my imagery without any complicated and awful licence agreements! What a pain... If you could explain what I need to do: in common English (not wikipedia jargon) I would be much obliged. I realise you are probably also volunteering too, and this is not your job, so I do appreciate your time. Arebelo (talk) 06:44, 22 October 2018 (UTC)

Restored, as they are PD in the country of origin now. Do we know when these were published, though? A quick search hasn't yielded any books or magazines that published them before 1923. I'm not quite sure whether selling a limited number of prints counts as publication. --rimshottalk 19:40, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

OTRS has been filed by the organization. please undo delete or restore this image--Kjogitha (talk) 13:36, 22 October 2018 (UTC)

  •  Comment OTRS volunteers has the ability to restore the image, however, there are many requests and not enough volunteers, this means that it will take time. However, often the system will give you a ticket number. If you have this number you may post it here and sometimes admins may assume good faith and temporarily restore the file prior to complete processing of OTRS. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 14:01, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
— Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 06:18, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

File:HC&VV_Leeuw.jpg is the official logo of Koninklijke HC & VV, HVV and Haagsche Cricket Club.

On this page (and also on international Wikipedia pages) a non existing logo is used: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/HVV_(Den_Haag)

I'm a member of the board of Koninklijke HC & VV and can confirm there is no copyright restriction on this logo.

It is used on several websites in Holland, for example: https://www.hollandsevelden.nl/clubs/h/hvv/ http://www.voetbalnederland.nl/team.html?a=8&c=3184&s=ZO&e=1&z=2018

The logo is also published on our own website: https://www.konhcvv.nl/

Could you please add this logo to our Wikipedia pages and delete the logo File:600px_Colori_di_HVV.png as several media now use this non existing logo in publications.

Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Bonjour,

If closing admin thinks URAA is not a reason to restore, then at least could the relevant deletion requests above have a proper Undeletion date (1930 publications would go public domain in the US in 2026 under current law).  Comment Sometimes people should really look twice at the file they are deleting. If one specifies the work as {{Own}} and places it into Category:public domain it is clear enough what is meant by that. Better approach would be to show the uploader how to correctly use {{PD-self}}. Of course, it is possible that in this case this was a claim for public domain where it is not public domain, we cannot really know. I hope that the person will not go away and come back here signing their post with their user name. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 13:15, 24 October 2018 (UTC)

I am the owner of this photo and also clicked by me. I have uploaded the raw and large file of this photo. You won't find this large size file of this photo anywhere on internet as it's the original copy.

However this link - https://lsinsight.org/zara-barring - later used the photo from Wikimedia and made a article. Their is no copyright issue here. Hence I request to please undelete of this file and keep it free for users to use it.

Regards (Saurabhworld1 (talk) 14:01, 25 October 2018 (UTC))

Support Well, this is the original resolution found elsewhere on the web: https://lsinsight.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/zara-barring.jpg However, the url suggests that it was uploaded there in April 2018 as opposed to the original Commons upload from 2015. It seems this case was not a copyvio on the Commons' side but rather an uncredited backwards copy by LSinsight.org. De728631 (talk) 19:03, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
Support This definitely should not have been deleted in the first place. A deletion request could have been filed if the administrator was unsure about the claim, this is definitely not an appropriate use of speedy deletion. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 19:16, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

For English speakers :

This image is of a poster, and the copyright for it is most likely owned by either the publisher or the creator of the work depicted. It is believed that the use of scaled-down, low-resolution images of posters to provide critical commentary on the film, event, etc. in question or of the poster itself, not solely for illustration on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, qualifies as fair use under the copyright law of the United States. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for more information.

Purposeto serve as the primary means of visual identification at the top of the article dedicated to the work in question.

ReplaceabilityAs film poster art, the image is not replaceable by free content; any other image that shows the same artwork or poster would also be copyrighted, and any version that is not true to the original would be inadequate for identification or commentary.

MinimalityThe image is used for identification in the context of critical commentary of the work, product or service for which it serves as poster art. It makes a significant contribution to the user's understanding of the article, which could not practically be conveyed by words alone. The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing the work, to show the primary visual image associated with the work, and to help the user quickly identify the work, product or service and know they have found what they are looking for. Use for this purpose does not compete with the purposes of the original artwork, namely the creator providing graphic design services, and in turn the marketing of the promoted item.

It's PD-textlogo. Formed only simple geometric 3 shapes (square, wide-rectangle, narrow-rectangle). [9] --Benzoyl (talk) 11:21, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

  •  Oppose I do not think that the top element that looks like a globe which could also resemble an open flame falls below the threshold of originality in most jurisdictions. While the individual shapes are indeed simple, a lot of creativity went into the composition. --AFBorchert (talk) 13:56, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
  •  Oppose it is indeed just simple shape but arranged in an original way so the result is not simple. @Benzoyl: the final sentence of the article you give says « The emblem isn’t simple design, is based on the principle that was calculated. » So it's not a good source to say it's simple. You can contact Tokyo's Organizing Committee to have their point of view but the Olympic committees are well known to be very protective of their copyright. Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 16:03, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
  •  Oppose I deleted this earlier on the basis that previous consensus, although not wide, had determined it to be over the COM:TOO for Japan. It's not just about the shapes, it's about their arrangement, sizing and colouring to provide a single entity, and that involves a creative element. Also, in the absence of clear evidence of intention to create copyright or to relinquish it, we should apply the precautionary principle and assume copyright exists. Rodhullandemu (talk) 20:51, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Bonjour,

Hello,

I am Anne Roumanoff's assistant. I do not understand the reason for the deletion of the file "File: Anne Roumanoff in 2018.jpg". There is no promotional character, not even in the legend. We bought and own all the rights of this photo. We only want to put a picture of Anne more recent (the last picture dates back to 2011!) And more representative of the artist she is today. Can you explain to me the reasons for this deletion? How should I proceed to keep this photo on his Wikipedia page?

Thank you in advance for your return, Yours truly

File:Ida Auken (MF).png, request for undeletion

Hi Please reconsider the deletion of the "File:Ida Auken (MF).png". Ida Auken owns the rights to the picture I have uploaded.

You have stated https://www.danskindustri.dk/di-business/arkiv/nyheder/2018/8/auken-der-har-varet-en-giftig-debat-om-manglen-pa-arbejdskraft/ as a violation of the copyright but it is not because the site is a blog post by Ida Auken.

You can probably find the picture at many internet sites because we use it for blogs and event promotion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmrasmussen (talk • contribs) 07:29, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

  •  Oppose I do not see a free licence on that blog post. Just because that blog post did not violate copyright when publishing that photo does not mean that you are able to copy it elsewhere and use it. The photo would need to be freely licenced. Please read COM:L to learn about the licencing that is allowed on Commons. Je ne suis pas un utilisateur habituel de Commons, mais je certifie être le propriétaire de cette photo, le propriétaire de cet Azulejos de Kate Swift. Il est accroché chez moi. Je peux fournir la facture d'achat en date du 19/08/1998 à Silves au Portugal;

Je ne comprends pas cette suppression et qui l'a demandé.

Merci de m'aider — Preceding unsigned comment added by Domimf (talk • contribs) 08:18, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Two paintings that are now public domain in country of origin

Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_in_Category:Paintings_of_flowers

Please restore these two files:

Is now public domain in Germany since Adolf Erbslöh died in 1947
Is now public domain in Finland since Helene Schjerfbeck died in 1946. Abzeronow (talk) 15:13, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
  •  Oppose the Camellia painting by Adolf Erbslöh which was created in 1924 and should therefore have been copyrighted retroactively in the US (URAA strikes again).
However, I  Support the undeletion of File:Helena Sofia Schjerfbeck - Pansies in a Japanese Vase (15491570896).jpg from 1887. PD-art and PD-1923. De728631 (talk) 20:37, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
Agreed. Camellia can be undeleted in 2020. Carl Lindberg (talk) 21:14, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
Well, I can live with waiting 14 months for "Camellia" if URAA is a reason not to restore. I can see 2 potential restorations in 2021 due to 70 p.m.a. in European countries (may need to research to see if there were any 1920s American paintings in that massive DR too). Abzeronow (talk) 05:51, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
Support both. Re Camellia, "the URAA is irrelevant here, non USA work" per Jcb in this edit.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:16, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
How can the URAA be irrelevant for non-USA works? It's the other way around, it targets non-USA works specifically. --rimshottalk 23:02, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
It's relevant. There was a time, when the URAA was under court challenge, that we suspended deletions due to it (thus the {{Not-PD-US-URAA}} tag) -- and there are some who want that policy to continue even though the Supreme Court confirmed the law. It is incredibly frustrating to wait for 70pma to expire, then find out the U.S. term is even longer (there are just as many works where it is shorter, but those are less noticeable). So, there are admins who will not delete or restore such works. The URAA does kinda suck, but it is law, just like the EU directive which also re-copyrighted an enormous mass of work around the same time. The WMF, when pressed with a DMCA takedown over the Anne Frank stuff (which has expired in the EU but was URAA-restored in the US) did delete it. Carl Lindberg (talk) 02:29, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
The whole point is that there may be 100 reasons why the URAA doesn't apply (publication in USA at the time, etc.). Regards, Yann (talk) 05:33, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
Publication in the US at the time without renewal would be alright, but do you know the details? De728631 (talk) 19:28, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
These "details" are almost impossible to get, that's the issue. Actually, it would more probably be "publication without a notice" in this case. It is not possible to prove a negative, so that's why I oppose deletions for this reason. Regards, Yann (talk) 04:01, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

just because someone tweeted a similar photo, does not mean that my photo is the same photo,
look at both photos, you can clearly see, its taken from 2 different cameras. --Joecento (talk) 03:39, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

also notice
my photo was taken "Horizontal"
the photo that shaked tweeted was taken "Vertical"

File:Kivelidi Edgewood spectra 2.png The file File:Kivelidi Edgewood spectra.png was deleted erroneously, to my mind. The image was claimed to be "Not own work, scanned from a book or smith", which is entirely untrue. In the image, and this was explicitly specified in the image description, there is a plot (drawn by myself with the use of tabulated mass-spectrum originally published in the NIST98 database) presented on top of the mass-spectrum of a chemical as found in the course of an official forensic expertise in the case of banker Kivelidi murder. The documents from the case had been published by the "Novaya Gazeta".

All originality of the combined image (a combination of two plots, one of them being plotted and marked up by myself solely) is due to my own work and cannot be a matter of the authorship claims from anybody else. ==Ahasheni (talk) 03:46, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

I was asked by the Director of Development at Opera House Arts to upload the logo to this webpage. The image was given to me for this purpose. -- 07:30, 28 October 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marvinmerritt (talk • contribs)

  • @Marvinmerritt: Thank you for contributing to Commons. Your upload is educationally useful, but I trust that you understand that we as the community need to ensure that it is released under the free licence in the appropriate manner. Therefore, a process of releasing such media has been created, you can see the proper procedure to follow at COM:OTRS. After you submit all the needed information by volunteers they will look at it and undelete the file if it passes the review. You may be given a ticket number, in that case the best approach would be to post this ticket number here, because in some cases administrators may assume good faith and temporarily undelete the file pending the review. Note, however, that the file that has not been released under the free licence, or the file whose release cannot be verified will be eventually deleted in any case. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 07:51, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
    • Note also that at this moment the file is not yet deleted. It will however be deleted unless a copyright owner supplies you with the release under a free licence that Commons accepts. Please point them to COM:L. You then have to apply the correct template to the file. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 07:53, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
  • To others: Could it be considered to be simple enough to be {{PD-text-logo}}? ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 07:54, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
  •  Oppose @Marvinmerritt: I oppose restoration of this logo because it appears to be a copyright violation due to it being a logo with external source, no license, no permission. It is probably too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin. Please have the logo designer (who generally holds copyrights to a logo) send permission via OTRS and carbon copy you on the message, or send the permission yourself with an explanation as to how Opera House Arts acquired the rights.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:19, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

Hello,

following file was deleted: File:Hosico cat.jpg The reason were copyright violations. Copyright is very important for me so before uploading, I asked the owner of the picture if it is OK. He agreed. So i am allowerd to use this picture, i can proof this via screenshot, too. So please undelete the picture, thank you very much.
