Thank you so much for your work depicting the counties of Alberta and rural municipalities of Saskatchewan. They look so ascetically pleasing. Are you ever going to do the rural municipalities of Manitoba, regional districts of BC, and regions of the NWT and Nunavut?

I hope so! BC and Nunavut will be fairly simple. Manitoba is more difficult, as the cutoff between the agricultural south and the large unincorporated regions in the north is somewhat unclear - I am working on it right now. For the NWT, see Sahtu Region and others. (Interestingly, I'm in Norman Wells this very week, and have discovered that this administrative region is run by a four-person workforce, whose office is on the second floor of a hotel.) Fort Saskatchewan Map[edit]

Hello!

A while back, you made a map for Fort Saskatchewan: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:0117_City_Fort_Saskatchewan,_Alberta_Locator.svg#mw-jump-to-license

Thank you once again for making it, I am very grateful. It looks wonderful! Fort Sask recently annexed land to the south from Strathcona County - 952 hectares to be exact. When you have time, I was wondering if you would be able to update this map to reflect that annexation?

Here is a map showing the new boundaries: https://www.sherwoodparknews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/1210-a3-annexation-e1575995029284.jpg?quality=80&strip=all

Here is an article to show I'm telling the truth (an article is also already cited in the wiki page): https://www.sherwoodparknews.com/news/local-news/fort-annexation-of-county-land-stamped-by-province

If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please let me know. I hope that you can do this, and I look forward to your response. Thank you for your time!

CplKlinger (talk) 09:50, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

So it has. I live just down the road in Ardrossan, so I should have marked January 1 on my calendar!
Find the map updated - I've started preferring the pushpin style to the "solid red fill" style, because the red fill obscures too many details. Awmcphee (talk) 19:06, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the quick update, I appreciate it! I agree that this style is a better choice, but is there a way that you could outline the border in red? From a distance the black seems to blend in with the other markers and grid lines. CplKlinger (talk) 19:45, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Saskatchewan RM Map[edit]

Hi,

I am a new editor to Wikipedia and am having trouble with the copyright jargon that entails adding maps to pages. I was wondering if you would be able to help me in resolving the issue and figuring out how to fix the copyright label. I appreciate the effort you put in and did not want to demean it, and I think it would be a great contribution to Wikipedia. Your map of Saskatchewan is excellent and the only properly detailed one I can find on the Internet.

P.S.

I am trying to get maps for these 5 canadian jurisdictions on wikipedia because they don't correspond with Census regions. I am unable to make maps or figure out copyright currently, but maybe this information could help you. This links will help you find complete regional maps with the names of each division.

Alberta county map link: https://www.canolacouncil.org/canola-encyclopedia/diseases/clubroot/affected-regions/

Manitoba county map link: https://www.gov.mb.ca/mr/contactus/pubs/mod.pdf

There are several maps in this PDF, here are page numbers. These page numbers are the numbers on the book, not the file program.

16 - assessment districts 18 - community planning branch offices 21 - conservation districts 25 - planning districts 59 - Manitoba Municipal Admin Association Inc Districts 61 - association of Manitoba municipalities districts 57 - Winnipeg Wards

Newfoundland / Labrador County Map: http://nlwater.ruralresilience.ca/?page_id=624

NWT Regions: There are five admin regions but 6 census divisions because the North slave admin region is split between Behchoko and Yellowknife on the census map. The 2014 or newer census maps should show the 6 divisions. There is already a page for the five admin regions on wikipedia with a map for that.

Once again I apologize for the inconveniences but hope this helps.

Thanks, u/Canadiancounties — Preceding unsigned comment added by Canadiancounties (talk • contribs) 05:34, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you're starting out. Wikimedia is really anal about copyright because hosting non-free material, of any kind, opens them up to litigation and puts their not-for-profit business model at risk. It's different from other websites where you can just post whatever, but it keeps the project running smoothly.
Nobody ever told me this, but most administrative boundary data is actually given out by the government for free. Trick is, you just need an unfamiliar software package to open it. Check out the Statistics Canada downloads here - and if you install QGIS, also free, you can actually open these files and see a map of them on screen. Good luck, this is how I got started a few years ago. For files outside the census, every province but Saskatchewan offers its own free downloads. I've already tried to replace most uses of the NWT census divisions with the NWT administrative regions. I'm not sure if Newfoundland and Labrador can be considered to have meaningful regional government.
You're right that in many provinces, census divisions have no administrative relevance. That's one reason why I made this table. Making better maps of every province is in progress - right now I'm tackling Saskatchewan, slowly, one RM at a time, by hand-tracing provincial web layers. After that, other provinces will go by very quickly. If you want to help, check what kind of edits I'm making. Adding county-level pushpin maps to articles about villages and towns is something that I hope is useful to the website.
Awmcphee (talk) 23:23, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for doing this. American viewers of our pages must know that those clunky census divisions are no more our counties than the Unorganized Borough of Alaska! It's music to my ears... but for my eyes to finally see county maps for Alberta.

Could you/are you going to extend your work to the Regions of Nunavut? It has maps, but they're way more garish compared to yours, and I love stylistic unity, and plus, there's only 3 subdivisions, should be pretty quick (it's not urgent, but applying your style to counties in Ontario/Quebec/PEI/NB/NS too would be a beauty). :) Also, will you ever do any work on Manitoba's rural municipalities like you have done for Alberta counties (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cypress_County) and Saskatchewan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rural_Municipality_of_Maple_Creek_No._111). Manitoba's the last province without a clean and crisp 2nd level subdivision map when you go to the pages for each rural municipality. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 91.204.48.158 (talk) 00:45, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SVG[edit]

Hi! When uploading maps (e.g. Connecticut State House 2018.png), I recommend you upload in SVG in addition to or rather than PNG. SVG maps are much easier to edit or make derivatives than bitmap images. I'm pretty sure QGIS has an option to use the format. Thanks, DemonDays64 (talk) 03:56, 6 September 2020 (UTC) (sorry if this seems kinda weird/rude maybe)[reply]

I see the value in SVG export - there are a lot of images on Commons that are maintained by people other than the original uploader. I just didn't use it for this series because of a boring workflow reason, and to (sigh) leave myself a bit of an advantage in case I want to sell prints of this series.
If I continue the series after 2020 redistricting, I'll keep ease of long-term maintenance in mind. Awmcphee (talk) 04:44, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

British Columbia SVG maps[edit]

Hi there! I love the conical SVG maps of British Columbia you made and I was hoping that you could share a blank version (not highlighting a specific regional district in red) displaying regional district borders, and a blank version without any the regional district boundaries. They could serve as an alternative to the existing equirectangular location maps found here.

County locator map for Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Nunavut[edit]

Hey, love your work. With your work on Alberta, these 3 are the only ones left without a base county locator map (forget calling them stinky rural municipalities). The anti-countyist lobby on Canadian Wikipedia is strong but we can fight the misconception that those stupid census divisions are in any way shape or form our counties.

Do you think you're ever going to make a locator map for those provinces/territory using their real subdivisions?
