License[edit]

Hi, You must allow use for any purpose, including commercial ones, if you want your pictures here. Otherwise, good quality. Regards, Yann (talk) 14:36, 17 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Yann. No issue with commercial use - images are available under standard CC licence. However, in my images with recognisable people I state that they are for editorial purposes only, and cannot be used for advertising or that sort of commercial practice. It's an Australian law thing, with most other countries having their equivalents. Australian law allows me to take photos with people in public places, as I do, such as street scenes and parades - but the last thing those people deserve is to find themselves on a billboard for Pepsi or a dodgy website for viagra ... hence the law, and the standard reminder that I put into the licence so that its clear. Additionally, because the images are CC, no-one has the right to put them into a commercial photo library then charge for use (as I've seen some old historic South American images from the 1860s which Getty has put into their library and is charging for despite the fact they should by all rights be Public Domain).
Hence, the restrictions I try to highlight really are already covered in Creative Commons. Its just that many people don't read the licence or understand the limitations, which is why I've tried stating them clearly upfront. I hope that makes sense. Bald white guy 03:39, 18 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I understand, but I think the wording is problematic. We have template for this: {{Personality rights}}, and it depends very much on the use, i.e. using the pictures in a book which is sold is commercial use, but should be OK. Using for advertising may be not. Regards, Yann (talk) 12:36, 20 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Support Good quality image. If there is any more space at the top of the frame, I would suggest re-cropping to add space there rather than at the bottom. --GRDN711 11:42, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Thanks for the feedback. Image is already full frame so no space to add - composition with these fast-moving guys (for me at least) is generally luck. Tried adjusting exposure a little as side-light on the water splashes is still harsh but not much left to play with. Next time I need to set the Exposure Compensation as dark water triggers slight overexposure I think. --Bald white guy 07:49, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

AI upscaling[edit]

Please dont overwrite images with AI upscaled versions per Commons:Overwriting_existing_files#Exceptions_to_the_minor_changes_rule in particular "✘ Artificially upscaling or enlarging using any tool, including AI-based or deep learning services". Tm (talk) 00:33, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads-up ... but the original file isn't overwritten. It always remains there in the history shown below the current image (and is always possible to revert). I'm working through historic images for a paper that I'm writing but am finding that scans are low-res and low-quality. Hence the upscales and minor clean-up to improve things. Should I just leave the images "as is" as bad as they are? The aim was to leave things in a better state than they were ... noting that originals remain in the history.Bald white guy (talk) 00:47, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The title of Commons:Overwriting_existing_files#Exceptions_to_the_minor_changes_rule is clear "DO NOT overwrite". Instead upload as a new file and link the two and make explicit that your file is an AI upscaling version. Thanks and good edits. Tm (talk) 00:51, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Comments Nice photo, but please dial down the highlights a bit. Part of the mother duck's head is blown. -- Ikan Kekek 23:19, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's somewhat better, but I still think the highlights are too bright and in some cases lacking in details. Can you recover more details? -- Ikan Kekek 08:08, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"I've seen some journals describe the toxicity and why some good people prefer simply not to deal with it."[edit]

Do you have a link? I'll like to read it--Trade (talk) 00:04, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Trade No - it was years ago, probably an article in one of the main Australian newspapers that I used to read in my work's lunchroom back in the day when they actually bought newspapers for us. Likely impossible for me to track down now. But it's something that stuck a chord as I'd seen some of it myself. I believe it was primarily aimed at Wikipedia though. Even though I can't point to the specific article because of the time that's elapsed, I think the statement still has some validity. It's not deliberately knocking Wikimedia, simply that any community that draws people from widely different backgrounds, opinions, values, personality types, and passionate feelings about their area of interest will generate some fierce debate - and can sometimes devolve into personal animosities. Clearly the policies try to minimise that - but it will never avoid it 100%. I hope that helps. Bald white guy (talk) 00:29, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ever considered to host your images on Flickr as well as Commons? Admins can't delete them there Trade (talk) 00:33, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Trade Thanks - I did, and did put them there originally. But it's hardly "archival" since they limited the number otherwise you need to pay annual subscription (fair, it's a commercial enterprise). That might be fine for a while - but then who or how will that be paid when I retire or am dead and buried, noting that these might be useful references for people looking at events in years past. i.e. How did Australian society feel about subject X in year whatever? Or how has Australian society evolved with increased multi-ethnic diversity where we went from predominantly white society to one that now embraces Asian, African, Middle-eastern, South American and (finally) indigenous Australian influences. Images of cultural events, protests and festivals might make up some of the picture. Going forward I might just talk with our State Library and see what they suggest. Like I said - my images aren't great and they won't change the world, but I think they might offer a time capsule for people wanting to look back. Plus, when I see then pop up unexpectedly in various places, it looks like someone occasionally finds value in ways that I never expected. Bald white guy (talk) 00:43, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
