How to deposit here and replace pic on wikipedia?

[edit]

Brand new here! By email, Douglas Youvan asked that I replace the picture of him in his biography with one he emailed to me. What do I do? Bridgettttttte (talk) 18:47, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  1. E-mail Youvan using one of our standard e-mail templates (see "Commons:Email templates" and "Wikipedia:Example requests for permission"), modified appropriately, to ask him to confirm by replying to your e-mail that he wishes to release the image into the public domain, or license the image to the Wikimedia Commons under one or more free licences such as the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY-3.0) or Attribution ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA-3.0) licences, or the GNU Free Documentation License. Note that it is not enough for Youvan to release the image "for Wikipedia use only" or "for non-commercial purposes". Images on Wikipedia must be usable for all purposes, including commercial purposes and modification of the original image. The e-mail templates explain this to the copyright owner.
  2. When Youvan has confirmed that he is releasing the image into the public domain or licensing it under a free license, go ahead and upload the image on to the Commons using the "Upload file" link. Do not overwrite the original image used in "Douglas Youvan"; choose a different name. In the "Permission" field on the {{Information}} template, add the tag {{OTRS pending}}.
  3. Once you have uploaded the photograph, forward your e-mail conversation with Youvan to the OTRS at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, indicating in your e-mail the name under which you uploaded the photograph. An OTRS volunteer will read the e-mail conversation, and if he or she verifies that the photograph has been properly licensed by the copyright owner, will replace the {{OTRS pending}} tag with {{OTRS}}.
  4. To use the new photograph in the Wikipedia article, just replace the name of the old photograph with the new one.

It's also important to ensure that Douglas Youvan actually is the copyright holder of the image. He will only be the copyright holder if he either took it himself (e.g. using a tripod), or if he signed a contract with the photographer transferring rights (in some countries, the fact that he paid the photographer is enough). If these conditions do not apply, you need to ask Douglas Youvan to request a license statement from the photographer instead. Dcoetzee (talk) 09:58, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. — Cheers, JackLee talk 13:08, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks guys. On the second comment, the image was taken with a timer off a flat rail that is obvious in the photo as described by Youvan. I'll get him to remail with ur instructions above. Bridgettttttte (talk) 19:22, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
