First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Please, mind the different photo collections of Nationaal Archief

Hi, I noticed you reverted a change I made to File:Rinus Terlouw (1951).jpg‎, File:Dina Doron (1964).jpg‎ and File:Jan van Schijndel (1951).jpg, and maybe more. The template Nationaal Archief inserts the category Images from Anefo. But these images are not from Anefo. The template has to be modified. before you can do that. Hi, The link with the permission is written in section "Licensing". If you click on the link, you will download de "Dakar Press Regulations", where in page 23 is stated "It is understood that websites must not, under any circumstances, use graphic elements produced by the organisation without the prior written consent of A.S.O., except for the following elements, which are provided copyright-free and that will not be altered: - Rally route map - Press releases - Copyright-free photos provided before and during the rally - Official rally plaque with sponsor (logo of the event)"

I am attempting to use the following Non free guidline for acceptability: "Pictures of deceased persons, in articles about that person, provided that ever obtaining a free close substitute is not reasonably likely". I have put in a fair use rationale to that effect. @BeckenhamBear: I'm afraid fair use arguments don't work on Commons. Files here must be either free of copyright or copyrighted but freely-licensed. Screenshots of tv programmes are assumed to be copyright by the production company or broadcaster. So we can't host it here. You might do better with a fair use argument on en:WP but even then I doubt it would succeed because (i) it could be replaced with a free image of Rodney Bewes, if one can be found and (ii) it is being used to illustrate Rodney Bewes rather than to provide recognition or critical commentary on "The Likely Lads, or whatever. Good day ManFromNord I have removed all images from the respective article which could possibly be regarded as a violation of any copy right. The images left have all been taken by me, in a public unrestricted place, with my own camera. It is in the public domain. The only other that I used were free available imagines on Wikimedia Commons . This will in future not happen again, and if in doubt I will ask for assistance in evaluating the copyright. I am the community manager at Ghost Ship Games, the creators of Deep Rock Galactic.

I have been noticed that I have violated our own copyrights, by uploading our own image to Wikipedia commons?

I have tried to upload the image to Wikipedia, where I get to know it must be a Wikipedia commons image, so I followed the guideline. As the guideline now made me fail to upload an image of our own game, I am very confused.

As well I would like to get a guide on how to upload as this interface of Wikipedia is very confusing to me.

I added the link to the online version, and removed your template.
