Colonisation maps

[edit]

Actually Andrei nacu was the creator of the animation those were from, they are stills of that image. I don't know much about the Spanish empire, you might also want to ask The Red Hat of Pat Ferrick who has made some maps of colonial empires. Kmusser also offered to help at the wikiproject maps page. Regards, --Roke 02:07, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I also noticed a Wikipedian, User:Vadac, submit my question on your talk page to the Wikipedia project page for maps. Thanks again for your redirects! Maps & Lucy (talk) 19:40, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion discussions on Spanish Empire maps

[edit]

Available here; here; and here (in many places).

Great job for cleaning useless maps. I have found other redundant maps. Here you are: File:El imperio español II.PNG, File:Imperio español version completa.png, File:Mapa combinado UI-RE.jpg. Best regards. Trasamundo (talk) 01:46, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Still more maps, now about the French colonial empire

[edit]

Hello Maps & Lucy! Thanks for making a joint delete nomination for all those other Spanish Empire maps. You may also be interested in some maps of the French colonial empire uploaded by a recent user who acts quite like EuroHistoryTeacher. His name is Gd21091993, and he, or users associated with the same effort, has been uploading slightly variations of the map File:France colonial Empire10.png. These duplicate variations (File:Etendue de l'Empire Français.png, File:1Etendue de l'Empire Français.png, File:11Etendue de l'Empire Français.png, File:13Etendue de l'Empire Français.png, File:Empirecolonialfrançais.png, File:Carte Empire Français.png), which he has been trying to propagate in many wikipedias, are incorrect and less detailed than the original map, since they do not differentiate between the two very different French colonial empires, and confuse French colonies with failed occupation attempts (namely in Brazil). Though you might be interested. Cheers! The Ogre (talk) 13:01, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your support and advice on my deletion requests! I am very happy to have interacted with you and have added you to my Wiki-friends list! I will go and deal with those maps within the next few days. When I have nominated them could you please post your agreement on there nominations once I nominate them? I'll give you the links to my nominations as soon as I do them! Again, thanks! Maps & Lucy (talk) 14:54, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File deletion mission continued

[edit]

Available here.

Fire away! The Ogre (talk) 17:50, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Maps & Lucy! I have a questions about a map you could nominate for deletion: The map File:France colonial Empire.png is in fact a duplicated of the more correct and widely used File:France colonial Empire10.png and should be deleted. Cheers! The Ogre (talk) 13:57, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll think about which one to nominate as one is showing the 'spere of influence', and one is not; and don't forget that both are heavily in use: File:France colonial Empire.png and File:France colonial Empire10.png Maps & Lucy (talk) 00:27, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, in fact File:France colonial Empire.png is not used. The Ogre (talk) 15:15, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion on deletion log of Portuguese empire is here.

I'm afraid I mangled your deletion request of File:France colonial Empire.png - in my opinion speedy-duplicate wasn't appropriate since it isn't a duplicate, considering that it isn't used anywhere though I don't mind if it's deleted, but it should go through the regular non-speedy delete request process. Kmusser (talk) 18:03, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like someone else fixed up the formatting I messed up. Kmusser (talk) 18:13, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

British Empire maps

[edit]

Hello Maps & Lucy! I was just checking the British Empire maps you linked in my talk and they don't seem to be used in other wikis. Which ones did you mena, then? The Ogre (talk) 13:30, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Responce here.
Done! As far as I can tell, the maps now only link to the Commons (no problem there, a bot will delink them after) or to User, Talk and Archived pages. I think it is best to nominate them in a group deteletion nomination, as you did for Commons:Deletion requests/Nonsense Spanish Empire maps. Go ahead and then I'll vote for del. Cheers. Re: Questions about deletion

[edit]

Questions posted here.

Hello! Let me see if I can answer your questions.

  • When a file I have nominated is deleted is it really deleted or does it just become ‘hidden’?
  • When a file is deleted, the page it was formerly at is deleted and no longer viewable as it was. Administrators (not normal users) can view the previous file and information located there by going to the undelete page for that file, where a copy of the deleted file is cached and where a copy of the former page's data is kept. See my note about Oversighters below.
  • Do people perform ‘undeletion’ often?
  • Undeletion is only performed when there is a valid reason for doing so (and can only be done by administrators). There are several reasons this happens; sometimes a file was deleted due to lack of permission, and when permission is granted via OTRS the file will be undeleted and updated to reflect this. Sometimes a file is deleted due to lack of author information, and again, can be undeleted if appropriate author information is found and added to the page. Most undeletions are for reasons like this.
  • Whether they do or don’t, how long does it take for undeletion to be unavailable for an item deleted a certain amount of time ago?
  • Undeletion is always available (except for Oversighted data, see below). There is no time limit, unless there is a technical reason such as a failed server where data was lost. This occurs very rarely to never, however.

Note that anything administrators can do/see, higher permission levels can do as well - bureaucrats and oversighters have the same abilities, with some extras. Oversighters have the ability to delete files and data so even admins and 'crats do not have access; this is usually done when information about a minor (such as their home address) is added somewhere, or in the case of illegal images such as child pornography being uploaded. Once oversighted, only other oversighters have access to the deleted data.

I hope that helps some :) Be sure to message me back if you have any more questions or need assistance with anything! -- Editor at Largetalk 04:59, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Something went wrong with my upload

[edit]

Hello! I've reverted back to the previous version for you. The problem with the file you uploaded seems to be that there was an embedded .png file; perhaps double-check to make sure that there's no embedded .png hiding somewhere that you missed? Cheers, -- Editor at Largetalk 04:45, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help with delinker bot

[edit]

Hi, I noticed that there is a delinker bot that you can use to change one image for another listed here and understand how to set it up based on what it says but it doesn't tell me where to put it. Does it go on the page to be delinked below the image like a deletion tag or somewhere else entirely? Thanks, Maps & Lucy (talk) 23:32, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can make a request on this page: User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. If it is about replacing a duplicate of the same or a better version you can use {{Duplicate}} on the File-page. –Krinkletalk 08:22, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Louisiane 1800.png

[edit]

Hello Maps & Lucy,

It seems that you have changed the map File:Louisiane 1800.png and this change have created some problems with the two French article that used it. The color coded are and text have disapeared.

The guys working on those article wanted to know why this has been done.

Is there a plan to recreate the file in an other format?

Do not hesitate to answer me here, if you want, please leave a message on fr:Discussion utilisateur:Cqui as I'm most of the time on fr: --Cqui (talk) 16:14, 26 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Assistant who speaks English & French

[edit]

{{helpme}}

I changed File:Louisiane 1800.png to show the Louisiana Territory as it was under Spanish rule, (a territory of New Spain governed from Mexico City), from 1763-1803 when it was sold to the Americans. The previous version was, while depicting it against modern borders was slightly inaccurate. I fixed the borders to make them accurate but changed the colours in the process. Would you please fix what ever confusions the colour change has caused on the articles this map has made?

I refuse to work on Wikipedia due to the battles that go on there about article changes. I merely want to enhance the imae department of the Wikimedia Foundation.

(Please don't change the image itaelf).

I fixed the descriptions of the image on those two pages now so they do not contradict the image. I also did not directly align the description to the image because just in case you ever wanted to change the colours of the image or change the way it looks the descriptions would not have to be changed again. Vadac (talk) 22:42, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Lucy,

Thank you for improving File:Colonial Africa 1914 map-he.png. It looks much better now indeed.

I have noticed that the inscription "הממלכה המאוחדת" was incorrectly typed as "המאוחדת הממלכה". In this respect, Hebrew is like French - The descriptive word 'united' ("המאוחדת") should follow its respective noun 'kingdom' ("הממלכה"). And since Hebrew is written from right to left we should have "הממלכה המאוחדת". Could you please correct the legend? Thanks and best regards, ליאור (talk) 20:12, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Now it's correct, many thanks! ליאור (talk) 10:38, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How to contact the Wikimedia Foundation leader and/or website creators themselves

[edit]

Hi, how do I contact the head of Wikimedia and be able to contact those in charge of the constructing and mantaining the wiki websites? Maps & Lucy (talk) 00:16, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please ask a more specific question at the Commons:Help desk. –Krinkletalk 16:11, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop categories removal without any reason

[edit]

Hi. When you add categories on a file, please don't remove categories when there's no pertinent reason to do so. That's what you've done for the Himbas pictures like here where there was no reason to delete categories such as "Taken with Canon EOS 20D" or "topless adolescent girls". Remove cats only when they are not pertinent OR if your added categories replace them. Thanks for your comprehension. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 10:34, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well toplessness is not always pornographic or erotic, and the Himbas are actually a good example. So if you don't have their pictures in the toplessness cats, you increase the (false) feeling that these cats are only pornographic ! The only thing to wonder is : are these pictures showing what the cat I want to remove says ? In that casen the answer was yes, so no reason to remove. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 08:52, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Blank map of Europe in 1920

[edit]

I see you made some important changes to File:Blank map of Europe in 1920.svg but the file was somehow corrupted. Please feel free to try again. It would be nice to have an accurate map. - Themightyquill (talk) 18:01, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can definitely try. Send me a link to the png. - Themightyquill (talk) 14:42, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

League of Nations members in 1920

[edit]

League of Nations Members in 1920. This is a really good map. Just one minor correction (to make it even better): Newfoundland is down as a colony of a member state. This is not correct. It was, in fact a Dominion with the same rights within the British Empire as Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Newfoundland was eligible to join the League, but chose not to (I suspect for financial reasons). It remained a full Dominion until 1934, when it went bankrupt. Britain took on Newfoundland's debts, but Dominion status was then suspended, and a Commission Government set up. This, however, was just a suspension of Dominion status, and did not imply a return to the status of a colony. In 1949 Newfoundland joined Canada in a hotly contested referendum (the other choice on the ballot was a return to full Dominion status). Bottom line: Newfoundland was not a colony of a member of the League in 1920. Best wishes, Luke Ashworth (St John's, Newfoundland and Labrador).

A map for child labour rates in Africa

[edit]

Hi - I am writing an article on en:Child labor in Africa. A color coded map for just the continent with recent incidence rate data would be valuable. It is not available. I noticed you have helped create/edit really nice colonial map of Africa. I wonder if a similar map can be created for child labour too? - I would do it myself, if I had the software and the expertise - I lack both!!

The data source is UNICEF, and here it is: http://www.childinfo.org/labour_countrydata.php

The data source shows lots of data. One useful map would be: a color coded map with country and total % of children working from 2nd column. Ideally, the color would be gray if no data is available, and shade darker as % child labour rate increases from 0 to 100%. If you or someone you know can help, it would help me make the wiki article I am writing up a lot more information rich. If I can assist in any way, please let me know.
