@Putitonamap98 and Gordfather69: You have made small changes to most of these files, which you summarized as "shapes". Unfortunately you have also also added a margin on the left and right. Please correct that. There is absolutely no reason why these maps should be square. (Only the 1948 and 1968 file still have their original format.) --Watchduck (quack) 10:05, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia changed the file overwrite rules which makes amending election maps extremely difficult. If you know a way I can overwrite files I'd be happy to fix anything you want. Gordfather69 (talk) 23:30, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For this set I would very much like to just revert the changes. The margins are bad, and the improved details are not really important. Election maps are always a bit coarse. (Sometimes they even use hexagons.) --Watchduck (quack) 00:20, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The tall states are supposed be a square canvas so they can look right in the wikiboxes JosephBobilly (talk) 23:34, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JosephBobilly: Where does it say that? --Watchduck (quack) 09:51, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JosephBobilly and @Gordfather69: Please see w:H:PIC#Upright images and c:COM:OW.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:28, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It says that on the page with the image set JosephBobilly (talk) 15:33, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So basically: Some user thought, that this is necessary. But it is not. I have answered on the talk page of the category. --Watchduck (quack) 19:50, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Putitonamap98 and Gordfather69: What I wanted to say in the edit summary in 1996: This is an image set. You either update it consistently, or you leave it alone.
See COM:OW: Changes that break consistency with other images
Unfortunately there are six updated images (744px) that are misaligned with the majority of updated images (810px), namely 1980, 1984, 1986, 1992, 1996, 1998.
The 13 files from 1914-1944 have the same problem. I doubt that these files can be fixed.
They should be recreated based on File:Illinois county map, cb 500k.svg. (Not to forget 1968.)
This would be a good moment to start using a script. Do you have the data in computer readable form, like JSON? --Watchduck (quack) 17:48, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gordfather69: I will explain it again, after you reverted the six misaligned files again:
This used to be a consistent set of images. You can update it, but only with another consistent set of images.
There are rules for overwriting existing files. One of them is, that you can not break consistency with other images.
Technically it would be correct to revert the whole set (1948-2020 to be precise) back to the simple shapes,
until consistent updates of these seven files have been created: 1968, 1980, 1984, 1986, 1992, 1996, 1998
I did not do that, because I trust, that this problem will be solved.
If you want to spend hours doing it in Inkscape, you can do that.
Or you can cooperate with me on creating a script, that will do it in seconds. Your call. --Watchduck (quack) 13:38, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I dont really care that much one way or the other, I'm not sure what you mean by a 'consistent set of images' consdiering that they exist in seperate wikipeida pages. Whats more important then the margins is that you're reverting the maps back to when they had really bad county shapes, those shapes were updated after the 2022 midterm elections to make the maps better looking. You can create whatever script you want to fix the margins, so long as the better looking county outlines are used. Besides, if I recall correctly the map series used be consistent across the series until you started reverting them. Gordfather69 (talk) 13:57, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what you mean by a 'consistent set of images' I included the imagestack templates to make it easy to see. Just move the slider. Two images are consistent, when the borders are aligned, and they differ only in the colors.
if I recall correctly the map series used be consistent across the series until you started reverting them They were not. The simplest reason is, that 1968 was never updated. But also because the squares of sizes 744 and 810 were misaligned. (see 1978 vs. 1980)
those shapes were updated [...] to make the maps better looking Great. But when images form a set, it is not enough to make each individual image better looking. They still have to match. (If you had four matching old chairs, you would probably be annoyed if someone improved them in four different ways.)
You can create whatever script you want to fix the margins I will not clean this up on my own. I can do this, if one of you gives me the data in computer readable form. (Any plain text format, that assigns state names to numbers.) You will continue making such maps, right? Then you should stop using Inkscape for tasks it was not made for. --Watchduck (quack) 15:34, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JosephBobilly: Thanks for fixing the six mismatched files. Could you do the same for 1968? Somehow no-one has touched that. --Watchduck (quack) 18:06, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Creation with a script?[edit]

@JosephBobilly: Thanks for starting with the cropped versions based on the standardized map. The code looks like you did this in Inkscape. This must be tedious. It would be much more efficient to use the code of the base file as a template, and then use some framework like Bottle. It would just be a short script, and it could easily be adapted for similar sets. Watchduck (quack) 21:27, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
