Why is the wikitext of the history of File:Center of Asia.JPG unavailable?

User:Oschtan overwrote User:Евгений Палецкий's file here and replaced the original uploader's name with their own. Whether that act is now unrevertible from age and the original needs copying to a new file or whether that should be rolled back, the original page's text needs to be available, but while I can see older pages in the history, any attempt to get at the Wikitext gets me only a page that says something like "[XeNrTgpAIDEAAFoESm0AAAAE] 2019-12-01 07:27:10: Fatal exception of type "InvalidArgumentException"".--Prosfilaes (talk) 07:28, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

Tag for Public Domain Mark 1.0

Hello, I can't seem to find the right tag for an image which falls under Public Domain Mark 1.0 (no copyright) Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by DoritG (talk • contribs) 08:05, 2019-12-01 (UTC)

@DoritG: .--Roy17 (talk) 12:48, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
There is no "right tag". Commons has not generally accepted works just under the PDM, which merely means that someone (who is not asserting they own copyright) is asserting for some unclear reason the work is in the PD. You need to properly identify why it's in the public domain.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:51, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Automatic categorizing

It is a very useful thing that internationalization templates are automatically categorized to Commons templates-xy for the language xy (or Commons templates-xyz for xyz). But unfortunately exist also other templates whose name ends with two or three characters after a slash. How can I suppress the automatic categorization, in that cases? -- sarang사랑 16:01, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

Possible misuses of Template:Creator

Is there any way to look for individual file pages that might have "{{Creator|" in the wikitext in place of "{{Creator:"? - Jmabel ! talk 01:27, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

@Jmabel: use regex. This grouping - insource:/\{\{\s*[Cc]reator\s*\|/ - will find all {{<any whitespace>C/creator<any whitespace>|. My search turns up 23,377 results. Indeed many people misuse it. They should use Label instead.--Roy17 (talk) 12:48, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
I see, though a lot of them are using this with a Wikidata link, and I guess this makes sense. So we'd need a subtler regex, because "{{creator|wikidata=Q…" is typically OK. - Jmabel ! talk 17:54, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: no they are not. The template is intended to be used in the following namespaces: the Creator namespace. This basic template is meant for defining a creator template only and not used directly on a file. And it should only be used for human beings, not organisations.--Roy17 (talk) 20:50, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
@Roy17: So, given what you are saying, all of those are bad, too, but the fix would be different. Still probably a distinction we'd need to make if a bot were to take this on. - Jmabel ! talk 02:23, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Meaning of you may select the license of your choice

On some of the Commons image file pages I see the sentence beneath the requirements say "you may select the license of your choice". Above it I can usually find both the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike and the GNU Free Documentation license attached to the file. Does this mean I get to choose which one of these licenses I use in my work and not mention the other one at all? I am not planning on bringing the image to Wikipedia, I would like to move it to a social platform outside of all the wikis.Prana1111 (talk) 16:36, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

  • It means that if you are reusing it outside of the Wikimedia Foundation world, you can choose either of those licenses, as long as you conform to the terms of that license. - Jmabel ! talk 06:30, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Why do my photos continue to be marked as possible copyright violations? All of the Canon camera photos that I've submitted have been created by my finger pressing the shutter button. I have photos of the Canon cameras involved that show their serial numbers; those serial numbers are included in the photo's EXIF data. The Nikon D7200 photos were taken by a friend of mine, and he has given me expressed permission to post those pics online.

I have a lot of pics posted on flickr, that may be part of the problem.

Help posting photo for Public Figure.

Hi there,

I've been trying to post photos for a public figure I'm connected with, using public publicity stills and giving credit to the photographers who took the photo, every time I try and upload they get flagged and taken down. I'm not sure how other public figures get this passed, as I see a bunch of actor/director/musicians who have publicity photos on their pages. How do I get this passed through?

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jazzyjpl (talk • contribs) 3 December 2019 (UTC)

@Jazzyjpl: Publicity stills almost always require going through the COM:OTRS process. There are two complementary reasons for this:
  1. Because most publicity stills are already somewhere else on the Internet, there is no way for us to know who is really behind the account that is posting them. Anyone can obtain these photos, claim to have the rights, and post them here.
  2. Very often, even people who are connected to the subject of the photo don't "have their ducks in a row" over the copyright issues. For example, for File:ChristianDitterOnSet.jpg you gave Warner Bros. as source, author, and permission, and claimed Attribution as a license. That is a very vague source (not like giving a URL to a page where the image appears), author (clearly, a corporation did not take the photo), and the chain of intellectual property rights is completely missing.
Basically, unless Warners has clearly published somewhere a statement licensing this as Attribution (in which case a link to that belongs in "source" or "permission", depending whether it is at the same URL as the source photo) you'll need to follow the COM:OTRS process. If Warners holds the copyright, then we need to have someone at Warners send email as specified from an email address at Warners stating that Warners holds the copyright and that they are granting this license. If you yourself are not authorized to speak on behalf of Warners, you can prepare a draft of such an email for them, but they have to be the ones to send it.
That's not a complete and neatly researched answer, and I looked at what happened with only one of the photos, but I imagine it gives you what you need. - Jmabel ! talk 02:15, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

plant locations, grouped by story

I have worked as a field botanist for many years and I have a lot of plant images I would like to make public somewhere. In many cases, there is a group of images, with a small "story" about them. For example "This the only population of Hieracium aurantiacum on the Shoals Cove road system, as of summer 2019." (a noxious weed likely to spread), or "As of September 2011, these are the only recorded locations of Populus balsamifera north of the Brook Range, other than those previously known at [blah blah] hot spring and at [blah blah] protected tarn." (a tree extending its range due to climate warming). Is there a reasonable way to do this in Wikimedia Commons? It seems the commons is more for individual images, each with its own metadata. I looked at "galleries", but I didn't see a way to put in more information than a brief gallery name. Perhaps you know of some other place to put records like this, where people who care about this could find them. Often, these are "baseline" records, which would show, many years later, what has changed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RickShory (talk • contribs) 2019-12-01 18:10:02‎ (UTC)

  • @RickShory: Descriptions that are common to a series of images can be centralized in a category that includes them all (it can even be stored in a subpage and transcluded in all photos it pertains to). Very specific categories can be tagged with Set, too. Your first step would be to upload the images, and next to work on sorting them out. I would like to help you, if necessary. -- Tuválkin 00:20, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Uploading an old family picture

I am updating a Wikipedia article about my great uncle, who played a significant role in the Russian Civil Wars of 1917 - 1923. I would like to upload a photograph of my great uncle, taken in 1916 by an unknown photographer. This photograph is held in the family archive. Questions: 1. Would Wikimedia allow uploading a digital copy of this photograph? Keep in mind, we do not know who took it, and the photographer is most certainly have been dead for a long time. 2. If so, how should I go about it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ktadenev (talk • contribs)

Hello Ktadenev. If it's taken by an unknown photographer in 1916, the copyright is expired now, both in the United States and Russia. You may use PD-anon-expired and PD-US-expired as the license to indicate that the file is now in the public domain. Thank you. Ahmadtalk 14:26, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
Just one more point: has the photo been published anywhere before? Because this is about the "publish" date. Ahmadtalk 14:28, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

No, it has never been published. Ktadenev (talk) 15:21, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

@Ahmad252: do you know the law in that case? I don't. - Jmabel ! talk 17:17, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thanks for pinging me, I almost forgot. To my knowldege, it needs 120 years after the creation date to be in the public domain in the United States, but about Russia... I can't find anything indicating that Russia also has a creation-date-based thing. However, because it was taken in 1916, it shouldn't be in the public domain in the United States; it still needs another 16 years. Ahmadtalk 19:20, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
@Ahmad252 and Ktadenev: So, apparently current U.S. copyright would belong to the (unidentified) heirs of the (unidentified) photographer, and this is an orphaned work. - Jmabel ! talk 20:54, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

@Butoodimus: I'm confused:
  1. If the file didn't upload, what is there to delete?
  2. If the file didn't upload, what exactly did you get back as an error message?
  3. What contest is this about? Can you indicate the page that describes the contest?
If, as I'm guessing, the file uploaded just fine but (maybe) didn't get the tag that would indicate a connection to this contest, we can fix that, but we need to know what file and what contest.- Jmabel ! talk 17:24, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Filemovers and "suppressredirect"

Hello,

around a month ago, I got the message on my talk page that filemovers such as me have got the suppressredirect right. On my last 4 moves, I only got this option active on the last page (which was not used anywhere, the other three were linked to from some WP pages). Does the functionality check whether a file was used on other projects? Or what's the reason why I couldn't uncheck the box on e.g. the criterion-3-move of File:Mond-Azurjungfer.jpg to File:Ischnura elegans Grosse Pechlibelle 2018-07-29.jpg (is in use on w:de:Wikipedia:Redaktion Biologie/Bestimmung)? I'm looking forward for an explanation. :-) Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 07:14, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

"Does the functionality check whether a file was used on other projects?" Yes, and that is exactly why the checkbox is non-uncheckable. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 07:51, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Help changing image in infobox for an existing page

Hi, We want to update the photo in the infobox on this page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Barnicle The photo we want to use is the main photo on this page - https://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/13/playbook-birthday-mike-barnicle-243740 How can I do this, and do I need to ask permission in order to do so? We would of course attribute it to Politico with full credits etc. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LetASingleVoiceBeHeard (talk • contribs) 4 December 2019‎ 17:26 (UTC)

  • @LetASingleVoiceBeHeard: The photo there is indicated as "Courtesy Beth Laski" so presumably the person who could grant a license conforming to Commons' requirements is Beth Laski. I have no idea how to get hold of her, but Politico probably would. Since the photo is previously published, permission would have to come through the process described at COM:OTRS.
  • You say "we" want to update the photo. Who is the "we" in question? - Jmabel ! talk 17:36, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for your assistance with this. Beth Laski is the person who wants to change this out, I am in direct contact with her, it is her request. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LetASingleVoiceBeHeard (talk • contribs) 4 December 2019‎ 17:47 (UTC)

  • @LetASingleVoiceBeHeard: Aside: when you post in a discussion like this, would you please end your post with four tildes ("~~~~") so it will automatically add a signature instead of my having to look at the page history to add one manually after the fact?
OK, then, several solutions, all involving OTRS:
  • Beth Laski can create an account of her own, write an email as described at COM:OTRS indicating that the account is really her and upload from that account.
  • Beth Laski can write an email as described at COM:OTRS indicating that the account User:LetASingleVoiceBeHeard is authorized in general to upload her work on her behalf. Probably best also to stick to a single license, and for her specify what license would apply to these uploads.
  • Beth Laski can write an email as described at COM:OTRS indicating that this particular image is free-licensed, and stating the specific license. She can indicate the image either with a URL or by attaching a copy.

See COM:CropTool. You should choose the option to create a new file (unless you are only removing an unwanted "border") - see COM:OVERWRITE, and if it's a jpeg image please use "lossless" mode. If it's something more "tricky" than just a straightforward rectangular crop and you can't do it yourself, or if the Crop Tool doesn't give you the result you are looking for, you can post a request at the workshop: COM:GL/PHOTO. -- Begoon 02:35, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Upload wizard does not take coordinates from EXIF data any more

I noticed that the upload wizard does not automatically take the coordinates from the picture's EXIF data any more. For example, File:Schwarzenberg, Lustenauer Hütte.jpg has (AFAICT) the coordinates stored in EXIF, but the upload wizard didn't use that information. It has worked for years for me, with the same camera and the same tools. Does anybody know whether this is generally broken or there's something wrong with my photographs? Thanks --Reinhard Müller (talk) 08:48, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

Yesterday it was OK. --Nightflyer (talk) 09:05, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
Strange. When I look at the file description page of your photograph and click on "Show extended details" under Metadata, the GPS data is listed. For my photographs, it isn't. However, when I look at my file in a different software, it clearly has GPS data in the EXIF, and it looks like it's stored the same way as in your file. --Reinhard Müller (talk) 10:09, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
When I look at my images for which it still worked, the GPS data is also correctly listed in the file description page. Between 16 September and 21 September, something seems to have happened which stopped the Mediawiki software to recognize the GPS data from my files (and, FWIW, a number of other EXIF information chunks). Does anybody have any idea what is going wrong here? --Reinhard Müller (talk) 10:16, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

It seems that the problem is caused by a hard-coded limit in the PHP version used. See https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T240509 for a further discussion. --Reinhard Müller (talk) 09:25, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

I am currently revising a Wikipedia page. I would like to use a distribution map that is part of a published article. Am I allowed to use it if I give appropriate credit to the authors and include the citation?

For example, "Shrinking distribution of the Grizzly Bear during post-glacial, historic and present time. From: Feldhamer, George A., Bruce C. Thompson, and Joseph A. Chapman. • File:Ursus arctos horribilis map.svg - In general we can't use copyrighted illustrations, but we can use the information they contain as a source to create new ones. You should probably include the citation for the data in the article where you use the map, even though it's credited on the file description page as not everyone will know to look there. There's COM:GL/MAP or COM:GL/ILL if you have something else you need creating and can't do it yourself. -- Begoon 04:29, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Citing incorporated works

Hello, I have a question about citing incorporated works. I've made an educational poster using my own text but also images from other authors. There shouldn't be a licensing problem since the images have been published under CC By 4.0 or 3.0. I am not sure though how to properly cite them and how to license the poster as a whole. • That may be a bit problematic, since the presumed intent is for the poster to be printed. The attribution and the image of the license is going to have to be present on the poster itself. I am not sure what exactly is the minimum text you can get away with and be compliant (it will probably involve a URL for the license terms). Can someone else help further?. Image help wanted

Hi. I recently uploaded this file to Wikipedia under a fair use rationale. It was taken at sea off Hooker Island, near Franz-Josef Land, then part of the Soviet Union, in July 1931. It shows the view from a boat launched by the Soviet icebreaker Malygin on its way to exchange mail with the airship Graf Zeppelin. I got it from this site, which says on the relevant page that Most of the images on this site are from the author’s personal collection of unpublished material... I have of course emailed Dan Grossman to ask him if he knows who took it.

I can't find the image elsewhere than at that site. If it was an unpublished photo by an unknown, probably Soviet, person, taken at sea but probably within Soviet waters, is there any chance that the full size image would qualify for upload here? --The Huhsz (talk) 19:28, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

We are creating an application which will server wikicommons photo urls listed on Open Street Map image tags and want to know how I should write the image url to be served a thumbnail image consuming less bandwidth.

I saw that I was able to add the text "/thumb/" append to the photo url a size plus a bit of repetition to get a thumbnail ... but was not sure if this is a built in feature of wikicommons, or was a one off... for example

  • If you are doing something like this, you almost certainly want to make sure that you also link the file page, for clarity of attribution.
  • On an ad hoc basis this should work, but I don't think we've ever guaranteed stability of thumbnail URLs. If you are going to do something like this, make sure you start from the filename and that the pattern is expressed in code or (better yet) in a tuneable values somewhere, so that it can easily be changed if needed.
  • Aside, but not useful for your automated purpose: you can always get a particular thumbnail URL by methods like (in Firefox) right-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Copy image location".
Jmabel ! talk 18:48, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

Jmabel and Fæ. Thank you very much for your responses - I appreciate your help. This is very cool.

For the link back for attribution, do you suggest using the link to the wikicommons page with the key url in descriptionshorturle? Will the JSON structure returned from the API be pretty constant ? ie, key names won't be changing daily ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by S2rapoport (talk • contribs) 7 December 2019‎ 16:29 (UTC)

Not sure about attribution, you may want to provide an example. The API JSON is stable, but the WMF have changed a few names over the years. I am unaware of there being any changes to the image data planned, nor the way thumbnail urls are named. -- (talk) 17:22, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

S2rapoport (talk) 06:31, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

  • attrLink should be just what you want for attribution.
  • The only reason the link doesn't work on this page is that mediawiki syntax won't cope well with a quoted URL. attrLink is single-quoted here, and of course the opening single-quote before 'http' isn't treated as part of the URL, but since the the character is a perfectly valid character in a URL, it has no way to know that the closing quote isn't part of the URL. - Jmabel ! talk 22:10, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Getty Images

Hi Do Getty images come under public domain? I understand some are and some aren't. But if I was to search on the internet for a sports star and found a Getty image of them would it come under public domain? — Preceding unsigned comment added by CreativeNorth (talk • contribs)

Please sign your postings. Getty Images is a commercial stock-images agency, well-known for suing anybody who uses their images without paying. So, Getty may offer images which are actually in the public domain in one country, but eventually not in another. Therefore we are extremely cautious about images associated with Getty and in doubt will not accept them on Commons. --Túrelio (talk) 16:08, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

I can't understand why someone forced me to accept the autopatrol right

CLOSED:

After many comments here and in other discussions, Kai agreed to recieve the autopatrol right and he has been regranted the autopatrol right by King_of_Hearts. Some participants of this discussion suggested that Kai should use more advanced tools such as Cat-a-lot, VisualFileChange etc. Kai has finally understood that and seeking a mentor who can teach him about those tools. While that part of the discussion has not been fully resolved, I do not think we need to discuss it on two places. Interested users/mentors should comment on Commons:Help_desk#What_is_the_more_advanced_tools? instead. I am fully aware that I have commented on this discussion and I am not an uninvolved editor but I do not think the community wants to see more drama. As such, I am boldly closing this discussion. Please DO NOT comment on this thread any further. Thanks. Masum Reza📞 18:54, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Take a look at this. Why he said, “you're wasting everyone's time”? I think that I don't need someone to grant me the autopatrol right(which is my own business), it will not hinder my work. This has been the case since I joined Wikimedia Commons in 2012. However, I saw him accepted accepted the nomination for patroller(see here). I didn't force him to do something he doesn't want to do. So, I can't understand why someone forced me to accept the autopatrol right.--Kai3952 (talk) 14:14, 27 November 2019 (UTC)

Thats because otherwise every edit of you should (or has to be) patroled by other users to confirm they are free from vadalism or similar. As you are an expierenced and "good faith" editor of commons, the other people dont think every edit of you needs to be controlled by other people. --JuTa 15:07, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
@JuTa: He completed whatever task I am working on(which meant he took my work away from me). I have no reason to contribute to Wikimedia Commons, but I'm not sure if I should leave?--Kai3952 (talk) 20:47, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
No, he completed a task, you denied to "do". You should read Commons:Patrol (or a translation of your choice). Patroling means to confirm that an edit is free of vandalism or similar. If you would accept the autopatrol flag, nothing will change for you, except most of your edits will be marked automaticly as patrolled so that nobody need to look after them. regards --JuTa 20:54, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
@Kai3952: Exactly what JuTa said. Not being autopatrolled is like being supervised. A supervisor (patroller, a human volunteer) is constantly checking if you are not breaking the wiki. This is needed for new users who might break things. When a user becomes more experienced, they are marked as autopatrolled: no longer needing a supervisor. But if an experienced user like you more or less demands a supervisor despite not needing one, it leads to frustration. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 21:40, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
I know. You are like my supervisor, but a supervisor won't take my work away from me. So, do you want to tell me that the edit I made is vandalism?--Kai3952 (talk) 22:14, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Nobody said that. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:19, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
But you had no convincing reason to explain why you took my work away from me, so I don't know what I did wrong. You say "breaking the wiki", "break things". Did you not mean that the edit I made is vandalism?--Kai3952 (talk) 23:08, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
@Kai3952: Are there any of the following statements you believe are false?
  1. The reason we would want to patrol a user is that we are not sure if their edits are likely to be good.
  2. Giving an account autopatrol means that we will not be patrolling their edits.
  3. Your edits are generally good.
  4. Patrolling edits that are known or strongly presumed to be good wastes time.
  5. Therefore, there is no need to patrol your edits.
  6. The way not to patrol your edits is to give your account autopatrol.
Again: which, if any, of these statements do you think is false? - Jmabel ! talk 22:54, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
The point is that...why did he took my work away from me?--Kai3952 (talk) 23:28, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
What I working on is categorizing files from Category:Files uploaded by Solomon203. When I noticed his edits, he had made over 800 edits. I asked him stop and I said: "do not do the same work as me", but he still made over 900 edits.--Kai3952 (talk) 23:40, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
I believe he already explained that to you. Most of your edits are like automated and not difficult to do it automatically. As you are not autopatrolled, that many semi-automated edits increases the patrol backlog. That's why he ran Cat-a-lot and categorized some files.for you so that those edits won't be appearing in the list. Masum Reza📞 00:08, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: The problem is that he didn't tell me first. He said to me on his talk page, "because you refused autopatrol". I don't know at all, so how I refused him? And now he had taken over my work that cause I don't know what else I can do for Wikimedia Commons. That's why I intend to leave Wikimedia Commons.--Kai3952 (talk) 13:23, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
You refused autopatrol: here, here and here.
I suggested what you can do. Accept autopatrol and/or categorize images based on their content, like adding File:Bill Clinton.jpg to Category:Men wearing neckties. There are many others things to do, like adding "depicts" statements, reverting vandalism, taking and uploading your own photos, recording words with a microphone and uploading the sound for the pronunciation on Wiktionary, etc. Accepting autopatrol is a good idea and a focus on work that can't be automated would make your contributions more valuable. You have been busy for a month or so categorizing Solomon203's uploads. All that time your edits had to be dealt with by patrollers who were looking for bad edits. I finished the job within a day without asking a single second from the patrollers. If you just say "I accept autopatrol", you can get back to work and nobody will bother you about this anymore. Please, just accept autopatrol. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 13:54, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz:
  • I never told you that I refused autopatrol, since you became a patroller at 15:07 on 24 November 2019. You look carefully at them:
  1. COM:RFP#Autopatrolled/2018#Kai3952 happened in 2018 and you didn't join in.
  2. COM:HD#I need an administrator to help me with to "veto" the RFR for Kai3952 happened in 2018 and you didn't join in.
  3. User talk:Masumrezarock100#Re: About the recent rollback happened between 20 November and 22 November, but the date you become patroller is 24 November.
That's why I say that I don't know at all so how I refused him. Also, I never said on your talk page that I refused autopatrol, and you didn't tell me on my talk page that you will take away my work from me.
  • I don't think what you say is honest and true, since this topic was archived soon after I asked "where is your evidence". You apparently refused to communicate with me. What does this mean? Why did you avoiding me? However, you accused me of refusing autopatrol, it makes me believe more that you really want me to leave(including to slander me here).--Kai3952 (talk) 18:30, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
  • I had already withdrawn that statement by striking it. And when I became a patroller is as relevant as the favorite color of the president of France for your refusal of autopatrol: it is utterly irrelevant. You refused autopatrol and that's a fact. Even if Snoopy and Bugs Bunny have a child who becomes a wood-carver, builds Pinocchio, Pinocchio invents a time machine, climbs the Everest with Abraham Lincoln, catches all Pokémon and goes to the moon, you would still have refused autopatrol. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:13, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
I believe what you wrote in the edit summary. I know that trying to explain things didn't work, but what I said is the truth. You really did not tell me that you will every once in a while complete whatever task I am working on. If I knew about this earlier I would not have refused autopatrol, but it's too late now –- not to mention you think that I am a sock of some LTA, or may be running some sort of assist or bot. These are all hinting that I should leave Wikimedia Commons.--Kai3952 (talk) 21:16, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

@Kai3952: I thought I'd been crystal clear, but I will try again. You are objecting to being given the autopatroller right, which is a very unusual thing for someone to object to. Effectively, by rejecting this you are saying, "Someone needs to take the time to check every single piece of work I do here." I am trying to understand your reason for this. @Kai3952: You come to the help desk page as much as any one user asking for assistance. Up till now, I have tried very hard to help you, but on this matter, I asked you a rather straightforward question by way of trying to understand your position, and as far as I can tell you are not willing to make the slightest effort to understand what I wrote and give me a decent answer. @Jmabel and Zhuyifei1999: I could not understand your question precisely. However, Zhuyifei1999 asked me to answer your question, so my answer may not be right. My answer is: 4. and 5. are false. Because you say "Therefore", I thought it means the same thing.--Kai3952 (talk) 19:34, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Kai3952: I think I start (hopefully) what you are complaining about: You like to (re)categorize images, and take days or even weeks to do that. Then suddenly somebody else "hopped in" with a tool you cannot use without autopatrol rights, and completes the task within minutes. Now your work is gone and you are angry. Well, the likely intention of that person was really to help you, as there was a much more effective method to to that task, and not to "steel" your work. If you would accept these autopatrol right, you would be able to do the same within minutes (i.e. with Cat a lot). And even without this right there are a lot of other backlogs on commons you can help. Look i.e. into Category:Media needing categories requiring human attention. There you can find hundreds of thousands of images needing categorization. regards --JuTa 21:46, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

But I didn't answer Jmabel's question. I saw him say: "I do not intend to try to help you in the future. Please do not attempt to contact me."--Kai3952 (talk) 22:02, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
He seems pissed off at me. So what should I do?--Kai3952 (talk) 22:05, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Simply put you are making more work for other people. A lot more work. When someone tries to work through the enormous amount of work you have created you tell them to stop. That isn't feasible. The amount of work you create is immense and leaving it there causes problems for all of our patrollers. This is not fair to them. Multiple people have tried to help you. Multiple people have tried to explain to you how autopatrolled will solve these issues and you have either ignored them or simply not understood. I don't know if this is a language barrier issue or some sort of deep misunderstanding but we are not getting through to you. Jmabel is one of those people that tried to help you and you have failed to understand, so they no longer want to attempt to assist. The more you refuse to listen to reason the more people are going to stop wanting to help you. There is only so many times we can explain the same thing to you before giving up. --Majora (talk) 23:24, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
I know Jmabel is trying to help me, but I think...
Even so, I am still willing to answer Jmabel's question.--Kai3952 (talk) 10:24, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
@JuTa and Jmabel: I'm not particularly fond of the message Kai3952 put up on his user and talk page. It suggests I will be doing whatever he was doing. I only jumped in for something that was easy to do semi-automatically, and I probably wouldn't even have done that if Kai3952 had been autopatrolled. (note: he continues to beat around the bush when it comes to actually accepting autopatrol.. never mind the silly accusations above) I was looking at RTRC and it was basically unusable because Kai3952's edits flooded it. It didn't take long until I realized these edits could be carried out very quickly, so I did, hoping Kai3952 would move on to something that really requires human attention. (which would naturally result in a lower edit rate) Instead, this happened. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:01, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

  1. dont grant him/her the autopatrol or any right. s/he can apply if s/he wants it.
  2. avoid communication unless necessary.
  3. let him/her be.--Roy17 (talk) 12:48, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
@Roy17: Kai shouldn't be autopatrolled for their own benefit, Kai should be autopatrolled for the patrollers' benefit. He performs many edits and they swamped the patrol log. You don't have to do anything, but currently Kai seems dead set on leaving Commons. At this point I honestly don't think it is worth my time trying to explain the situation to one who wouldn't even explain what they don't understand. If they can't understand what 'patrol' means, then fine; their edits shall be bot-patrolled. If they can't accept that, then I'd rather sacrifice tham rather than the patrol backlog. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 02:28, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
@Zhuyifei1999: it took so long for Kai to accept autopatrol, and now you effectively wheel warred with Rama by removing it. Bot patrolling doesn't appear to be working well (Rileybot was supposed to be doing that) but even if it did work, you'd need a rather high refresh rate to keep recent unpatrolled changes clean. Refusing autopatrol simply shouldn't be an option. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 13:57, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: I don't see where they have accepted the right, but many hints of otherwise. This post is way too long. If that is a case, please link it and I'm happy to undo my change. That said, I have also developed a script to patrol their edits based from eventstreams, and is currently running under my main account. I don't see the reference to where RileyBot has failed. Would you mind linking? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:51, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
@Zhuyifei1999: Kai requested by mail: Special:diff/378645653. So apparently Kai mailed Rama. (see also the rest of that discussion) Rileybot: Commons:Bots/Work requests#Patrol edits from autopatrolled users, but now I think I may have misunderstood. It's unclear if Riley needed a BRFA or if it was already running. When I looked at RTRC on 29 November, Kai's edits were all over the place. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:13, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Regarding the bot, I think I can file a BRFA for it, though, I'm expecting Kai to strongly object to being bot partolled as well with no reason I can interpret, causing the request to stall --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 18:28, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
Hello, Kai3952 sent me a mail to request Autopatrol. Considering that
  • Autopatrol is at the discretion of admins (there is no formal process)
  • the criterion of being a user with a reasonable command of the principles of Commons seems to be met for Kai3952
  • Kai3952 had previously had Autopatrol status, removed only at Kai3952's own request
there seems to be no reason for me to decline Kai3952's request to have Autopatrol again. Rama (talk) 21:43, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
@Rama: Seems to be most beneficial to community time if we just wrap this up whatever way is most expedient. GMGtalk 22:01, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

To be honest, I really don't get it when you say that other users are annoying when you're the one making a fuss about the auto-patrolled right. Furthermore, it doesn't even change anything when you edit with the auto-patrolled right. Just that patrollers do not have to patrol your edits knowing that they are good and as Masumrezarock100 mentioned, it is a waste of space in the patrol log. You said "You are like my supervisor, but a supervisor won't take my work away from me." but please think about this, Will a supervisor prefer a worker who does the same amount of work in 30 minutes or someone who takes a whole 30 days to finish the same thing? It takes one to see one, if you think others are annoying, you're most probably annoying too. So far, you've annoyed a total of 6 (more/less, idk.) people, namely, me, Jmabel, Alexis Jazz, Zhuyifei1999, Majora and most probably, Roy17. How? They tried to help you by asked you questions so that they can understand the situation better, but instead of answering them, you misinterpret or don't give a damn about them. The only thing that changes is that your edits will not clog up the RTRC and it is seriously very difficult to sift out bad edits that are squeezed in between your good edits (~1.1k/day). I've said what I wanted to say and if you're going to misinterpret it, then so be it. I'm out. (Talk/留言) 12:48, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

"They tried to help you by asked you questions so that they can understand the situation better, but instead of answering them, you misinterpret or don't give a damn about them" Very nice summary. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 18:28, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
I have answered Jmabel's question here. I remember I sent 大诺史 an email a few days ago, but I can not disclose the details due to personal reasons.--Kai3952 (talk) 11:05, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
  • The appropriate essay is Don't be a jerk. The autopatroller right makes it easier for others to work here without following along with you. If you think someone has been wrongfully reverting your edits, that is a separate issue and your complaint about the autopatroller right make that point seem silly. Bring it up with them or bring it up at Commons:Village pump or other places and get a consensus for your version. If your fight is why you or others should have the autopatroller right, make a proposal at Commons:Village pump/Proposals for some new requirement for it but if you think arguing here about the right is anything else than just being a general annoyance, I don't know what to say. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 23:04, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
    • @大诺史: We know you're talking about the efficiency because you say "will a supervisor prefer a worker who does the same amount of work in 30 minutes or someone who takes a whole 30 days to finish the same thing?" I would like to restate my problem, but actually my problem is: I know for the past 3 years I've always hand-edited, but no-one told me how to use the "more advanced tools"(as Alexis Jazz said here) and to help me be more efficient at my work.--Kai3952 (talk) 00:34, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

Per ~riley's reply, I have removed my statement.--Kai3952 (talk) 20:53, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

I have readded the autopatrol flag to Kai3952, as he appears to now understand what it does, in particular that it doesn't change his workflow in any way. I think a lot of the confusion has come from the language barrier and it is best to end this discussion here. 我给Kai3952重新加上了autopatrol权利,他现在应该知道是什么意思了,反正并不影响他的工作。我觉得很多的误解是由语言上的问题造成的,所以希望我们这件事也就说道这里为止了。 -- King of 00:58, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

Even so, the problem is not completely solved since I only got the autopatrol. I must learn how to use the "more advanced tool" to help with take care of the patrolling backlog. Otherwise I can't get anything done!--Kai3952 (talk) 10:32, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

@JuTa, ~riley, Rama, King of Hearts, and Zhuyifei1999: Based on what happened at Photographs_by_Solomon203_taken_in_XXXX, I'm starting to doubt what he said, especially that no one helped me after I got the autopatrol. I didn't want a fight and I was scared if I didn't do what he said then he was going to take away my work(as he said: "I will every once in a while complete whatever task you are working on"). I had to learn to use the "more advanced tool" to help me be more efficient at my work, but also to help with take care of the patrolling backlog. The problem is I don't know how to do it at all!--Kai3952 (talk) 17:41, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

1916 painting by Helene Perdriat, who died in 1969

I'm trying to find an image of a work by this artist, who died in 1969. I've found a 1916 painting online, but when I started to upload, the questions confused me as they wanted to know if it was both pre-1924 AND by an artist who died 70 years ago, so I wasn't sure whether both were required? Here's the gallery's website: here

Yes, she primarily lived and worked in France, I believe. Valereee (talk) 12:37, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
Then 70 years would be the main issue, and we are clearly 20 years from her work being in the public domain in France, so they don't belong on Commons for the present without a license from her heirs. - Jmabel ! talk 22:15, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

If she has already indicated the license online, then besides the usual:
  • in the Information template, indicate her as author.
  • Do not use Self or Own work.
  • Assuming the permission is given on the same web page as the photo, give that page as source.
    • If it is more complicated than that, respond here and I can give you more detail.
  • Use precisely the license that she has offered.
If she has not already indicated the license online, and cannot do so before you upload, then you'll need her to go through the process outlined at COM:OTRS. It is much simpler if she can do this before you upload, attaching at least a thumbnail of the relevant image to the email. - Jmabel ! talk 17:54, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

The Chinook Jargon Dictionary

Hello Joe, it looks like you have a digital copy of the Chinook Jargon Dictionary; I was truly hoping that you might send me one, as I was hoping to share it with participants of our Coiled Cedar Root Basketry workshop next summer. I have a facebook page titled The Chinook. I live in Yale, BC, and have aboriginal friends in Washington State. Chinook Jargon was widely used in the 1800's here, and we still use many of the word in everyday life and in placenames; we have at least three places called Skookumchuck in BC.

Thanks so much for your attention!

The book is Chinook: A History and Dictionary of the Northwest Coast Trade Jargon by Edward Harper Thomas. I do not have a digital copy, I have the book itself, and I don't usually function as a long-distance lending library. It would probably cost half as much to send the book back and forth as for you to buy a copy. If you can't turn it up in a library up there in BC, you can probably buy a copy online for about US$20. - Jmabel ! talk 17:46, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

Putting an upload in the right place

I've uploaded my first pic here, and as it is a derivation of GautierPoupeau's CC 2.0 photograph at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crassus_(13668007863).jpg, I'd like it to appear under the File History on this page, not as a separate entry. How do I ensure this happens?

Thank you.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Sirscha (talk • contribs) 18:02, 11 December 2019‎ (UTC)

Hey Sirscha. Well the first question that comes to mind is why are you uploading a new version of a statue of Crassus and claiming that it is a statue of Galba? GMGtalk 18:29, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

Hello, User:GreenMeansGo. You're not answering my question and I'm frustrated that my first question on and upload to Wikimedia Commons illicits a time-wasting response. Firstly, I didn't claim anything. My wording, if you look, is that the piece is "Thought to be a representation of Emporer Galba". If you follow the links in GautierPoupeau's original posting of this image, you will see that this is wording direct from the Louvre which houses the head bust. In GautierPoupeau's own description it reads that this is "Moi, Auguste, empereur de Rome". I don't know why the file is named Crassus, perhaps that comes from the Italian. Emporer Galba had a lot of names.

@Sirscha: Once you are autoconfirmed, you will be able to overwrite a file using the "Upload a new version of this file" link under the file history. One reason why that right is restricted is because in many cases this is not the right thing to do. As explained in COM:OVERWRITE, a file should only be overwritten if it's a minor, uncontroversial improvement on the original, and I don't think replacing the background with plain black is likely to be entirely uncontroversial. --bjh21 (talk) 23:53, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

How to ensure my image does not get deleted? (Tried twice already and deleted both times even with permission granted from owner of image)

Hi, I am very new to Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons still and have tried various times to upload and keep the image uploaded for Martha Hart and use it for her Wikipedia since there are no images uploaded on her Wikipedia. The picture is owned by her and I contacted Martha Hart about using the image on her Wikipedia page, which she has agreed to and allowed. She also sent her approval by sending an permissions email to the address: permission-en@wikimedia.org. What are the best ways to ensure that my image does not get deleted and taken off her Wikipedia page? I want to upload it again and I want to make sure it does not get taken down again for the third time. Thank you! Kgywu (talk) 22:56, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

  • @Kgywu: I assume this is about File:Image of Martha Hart.jpg. To the best of my knowledge, Commons never got acceptable permission from the copyright-holder via OTRS. The relevant permission would presumably be from Lubna Anis as the photographer; permission from the subject of the photo is not relevant.
  • Please do not upload the same image again without getting permission sorted out first. If we can sort this out, that one will be undeleted; if you ignore the situation and start uploading the same thing again, your account is liable to be blocked. (On the other hand, if we can get a higher-resolution version of the photo once permission is worked out, that would be entirely good.)
  • I will mention this discussion at Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard; there doesn't seem to be any public record of what individual handled this for the OTRS team, but this will get hold of the team. But let's try to keep on-wiki discussion in one place, here. - Jmabel ! talk 02:16, 10 December 2019 (UTC)
Thank you @Jmabel: for your help on this matter, I really appreciate it. Kgywu: for this image File:Image of Martha Hart.jpg, the photographer can respond to Ticket:2019032510009458 (per the email they were sent on 23 March 2019) with this name of the image, specifically stating the name of the file is different from that of the original correspondence, together with their new permission statement with this image name. Otherwise they will end up having to start from scratch. I'll keep the ticket on my watchlist for now. Ww2censor (talk) 11:05, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

copy wiki for hardcopy newsletter

Does the CCBYSAC license permit me to copy text from wiki, include it in a hardcopy (snail mail) news letter (only about 100 letters mailed a year)? Dave — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidsingleton22 (talk • contribs) 00:01, 12 December 2019‎ (UTC)

Sorry, I'll try again, Does the Wiki license (CC-BY-SA) license permit me to copy text from wiki, include it in a hardcopy (snail mail) news letter (only 100 envelopes sent per year)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidsingleton22 (talk • contribs) 03:30, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

  • Let's stick here with CC-BY-SA (not sure what you mean by "the wiki license"). "Snail mail" and "only 100 envelopes sent per year" are completely beside the point. "Hardcopy" is relevant only because any acknowledgement of a license needs to be textual, not just (say) a link.
  • I'm a little confused as to what you are trying to do. There is not a lot of text on Commons; that would typically be more of a consideration for (say) Wikipedia, but I presume there is a reason you are asking here. The text on help pages, descriptions, etc. here is, indeed, CC-BY-SA 3.0, as are descriptions of images, hover text, etc.
  • The key is that the "BY" in CC-BY-SA means that you need to be clear about attribution. For text, that means that you would typically go to the "history" of the page from which you are taking text and, using that, could list the authors to whom you attribute the text. However be careful about the origin of text that might have come in from a third-party site. E.g. the title and description of File:1st Ave looking northwest from Yesler Way toward the Yesler-Leary Building, Seattle, 1888 (WARNER 619).jpeg came from University of Washington Libraries, not BMacZeroBot.
    • If the list of authors is excessively long -- e.g. a policy page with dozens of contributors -- you presumably can attribute a few names, add et. al., and give the URL of where the list can be found (the history page).
  • You will need to state that you are using these texts under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. I recommend modeling that on the text of and also providing the URL https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Creative_Commons_Attribution-ShareAlike_3.0_Unported_License as a full description of the license.
  • See also Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia#Requirements of frequently-used licenses.
  • NOTE: I am not a lawyer, nor am I a frequent reuser of other people's textual content from Wikimedia Commons. I've done my best to say how I would approach this if I were doing what you seem to be intending to do. It is possible that my advice is not perfect in licensing/copyright terms, and someone else may want to weigh in here. - Jmabel ! talk 04:20, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

I am a complete novice in this matter: if a go to Wikipedia, search on "Virginia Hall" I get a screen with her life story. If I copy the text, and print it in a hardcopy newsletter (including crediting Wikipedia and including the URL), and mail it to someone, have I breached copyright? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidsingleton22 (talk • contribs) 19:29, 12 December 2019‎ (UTC)

  • @Davidsingleton22: If that is all you do, and you do not indicate the license etc. than, yes, you will have breached copyright. So you were asking about Wikipedia, not Commons (the site on which you asked the question)? Most of what I said above applies, but (assuming we are talking about the English-language Wikipedia) their policy can be found at en:Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content#Re-use of text under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. In particular, it is a bit more strict about listing authors than what I wrote above. Also they are a little unclear on what it means to license under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike License 3.0 license. I stand by my advice that, "You will need to state that you are using these texts under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. However, I decided to upload my files to your website, but I couldnt because I was not authorized for doing so. After years of studying on the structure of the atom and studying various religious texts, especially the Qur'an, which is a complete collection of the words of God in a completely scientific way, as well as extensively studying the modern science especially physics and chemistry of the 21st century, finally, I realized that the structure of the atom is different from that of modern science. Because according to God there are three main particles that make up all the components of this universe and are called bi- wings, tri-wings and quadra- wings angels. Certainly, angels are nothing like beautiful women with wings flying by them, but just as different human societies having their own languages, God also speaks and utters them by his language. The Koran has its own language in the world's greatest scientific book, which does not refer to the angels in the Qur'an as the angels we are referring to, but they include basic constituents of this universe. Considering the chemical and physical properties of atoms, according to scientists, an atom is made up of three components, including neutrons, protons, and electrons; however, according to God the creator of the atom, there are no electrons, protons or neutrons in the atoms, but atoms are formed by bonding between the clockwise (right rotational direction) and counterclockwise (left rotational direction) elemental particles, which themselves originate from a single particle called the Basic Elementary Particle, discussed in detail in various chapters of this book, determining the formation of bonds between these particles. Thus, three-winged angles are an integral part of the structure of the atom, and after joining two three-winged particles to each other, they form another particle, called the four-winged angel (now called as neutron). There are no electrons within the structure of an atom, moving around the nucleus or core in special orbitals cross-linked to protons. Rather, the two-winged angels in the universe are similar to the three-winged angels except that their energy levels are lower than the three-winged angels, and they play role different from the three-winged angels. If the three-wing angles only participate in the structure of the atoms, the two-winged angles, that are smaller from them, are involved in the transmission of information, heat, or electromagnetic waves. This brief text fully explains the structure of these basic particles and how they have been formed. Double wing angles also have different types depending on the energy content of each section. We will explain later that the types of basic particles present in the universe include the basic preliminary particles, the neutral particles, and the residual energy particles, each of which will be explained in detail in different sections of this book. This book initially deals with the emergence of the first basic elementary particle, and then explains how the basic or original elementary particles become deformed and turned to begin their rotations clockwise and anticlockwise. Also in a chapter, we explain how energy particles are formed from energy dots or energy points. A full explanation of the Soul and the Elf is provided with reference to the way in which the basic particles were created, and the role of these two important elements that have occupied everyone's mind will be provided in other chapters.. One chapter of this book examines how the earth and the moon rotate around the sun. The wave equation, which has been rewritten on the basis of the elementary particles, is presented in another chapter. We will also discuss in detail in term of a chapter how atoms have been created by bonding the elementary particles together, and we will discuss the chemical and physical properties of atoms according to the new theory called Wingel theory. A Chapter of this book will discuss how the earth and the heavens have been created and explain it in detail by Wingel theory. In another chapter of this book, we will examine how information is transmitted in the atmosphere, as well as in the solid bodies and in water, and will clearly explain the relationship between the transmission of information and radio waves by the interference of Elementary Particles. The book also includes other chapters examining how chemical reactions work in the body of organisms, the role of phosphate for trapping the sunlight and chemical energy and its use by other organs and cells, and how to produce carbohydrates through photosynthesis and how carbohydrates are used to generate energy, we refer to the Krebs cycle and the structural modification of this cycle according to Wingel theory. waiting for your prompt reply Best Regards 16:14, 13 December 2019 cob :I assume you want to publish your new theory on Wikimedia Commons. I've read up on posting an artist's paintings to Commons but I am still confused. The artist in question died in 1971. All of his work was done in the United States. Museums like the Smithsonian and the Art Institute (Chicago) have many scanned images of his paintings on their websites, dating back to 1919. Am I correct that for any pieces done prior to 1923, I could upload the museums' images to Commons? Or am I not allowed to do that because they might have, say, scanned a 1922 painting in 1990, and so they have the copyright on the 1990 image of that 1922 painting, but not the copyright on the painting itself? The Art Institute's terms of use page seems to suggest I can't use their images that are not explicitly designated as CC0. But the Smithsonian says they "allows personal, educational, and other non-commercial uses of the Content." So, my evolving thinking is that I could put the artists' images from the Smithsonian into Commons, even those after 1923, giving full credit to the Smithsonian, but I cannot upload any of the Art Institute's images because of their more restrictive licensing terms. I'm also wondering if I take a picture of one of his paintings in a museum, can I then upload that image to commons? I'm related to the artist, but I am not an heir -- he did not have any children so I'm not sure who in the family could grant the rights. Is there an article somewhere that spells this out clearly? Everything I've read so far just leads me to more questions without clarity on what's allowed for images of paintings. Thanks for any help. 13:02, 14 December 2019 :Hey IntegrityPen. The short-and-sweet of it is that scans are generally considered "slavish copies", that do not themselves entail sufficient creativity to be protected under copyright. In other words, you could give a scanner to a robot or a zombie or a particularly well-trained dog, and they would still pretty much come up with exactly the same thing. Because of that, no new copyright is created when a scan is done, and the only date you need to worry about is the date of publication of the original work (if before 1924) or the date of death (for the rest of their works that would become public domain in 2042, 70 years after their death). Celebrity Picture

Hello, I am administering John McEuens page and he gave me a photograph that your site is barring me from posting. Can you please allow this picture to go up so his page is current. FYI, we also donate to your org. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JohnMHoover (talk • contribs) 21:09, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

  • @JohnMHoover: Is this about File:10 JOHN solo John McEuen Deering Hi Res-31 conv copy 2 Deering, blue coat copy 2.jpg or some other image? You've indicated "own work" on that. Are you the photographer? Because you say here "he gave me a photograph" which doesn't make sense if you are the photographer.
  • If you mean some other image, who owns the copyright for the picture in question?
  • What is the "free license" offered for the picture?
  • If you are not the photographer, is there somewhere on line, on a site or page clearly under control of the copyright-holder (typically the photographer), that indicates the grant of this "free license"?
    • If not, and if that cannot be done, then see COM:OTRS for the necessary process so that we know that the copyright holder is offering an appropriate free license.
  • Also: you say you are "administering John McEuens page." Do you mean John McEuen, something else in the English-language Wikipedia or Commons, or something off-wiki? Because as far as I know you are by no means an administrator on either the English-language Wikipedia or Commons, at least not under this account name.
  • Also: on John McEuen: what's with the caption "Playing my Deering Banjo John McEuen model!" Who is the "me" in a Wikipedia article?
  • Also: have you read en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest? It's not a concern on Commons, but it looks like you haven't abided by this on the English-language Wikipedia. I would strongly advise you to comply with that policy, or you are very likely to be blocked on that site. - Jmabel ! talk 01:42, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Which file is that? You did not log in with your account when you asked this question, so without some more information we cannot check your uploads. Can I upload a Google Earth map that I modified to show (delineate) a particular area? — Preceding unsigned comment added by George K. Weller (talk • contribs) 19:51, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Unfortunately such maps cannot be uploaded here. To quote en:Google Earth: "Every image created from Google Earth using satellite data provided by Google Earth is a copyrighted map. Any derivative from Google Earth is made from copyrighted data which, under United States Copyright Law, may not be used except under the licenses Google provides. Google allows non-commercial personal use of the images (e.g. on a personal website or blog) as long as copyrights and attributions are preserved." Commons does not allow non-commercial uploads and the original copyright by Google remains, so your modifications may not be uploaded. De728631 (talk) 20:13, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

I don't think that image would be allowed. The image is sourced to Pixabay, whose license (https://pixabay.com/service/license/) contains Don't sell unaltered copies of an image. e.g. sell an exact copy of a stock photo as a poster, print or on a physical product.. I would see this as a non commercial clause, which aren't allowed here. It does also seem the website is misrepresenting the original license, as that isn't CC0 as claimed. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 18:36, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
Per Template:Pixabay, it would have been permissible prior to January 2019, but is no longer, due to the change in license. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 18:38, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
@OxonAlex: Pixabay uploads are still allowed, so long as they were originally uploaded to Pixabay prior to the license change. These older files would still be covered under their original CC0. GMGtalk 21:11, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Can someone explain to me how I can prove that this logo is the company's and how I can upload it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JosephGX (talk • contribs) 12:07, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

  • You don't mention what tool you are using to upload, or what the error message says, so it's hard to guess.
  • Is the logo so simple (or so old) as to be in the public domain? If not, then we almost certainly need to go through the COM:OTRS process to get a license.
  • Note that the company does not necessarily own the copyright of its logo. If it was designed by someone outside of the company, they would own the copyright unless it was explicitly transferred. uploading photo of art and photo of an artist

I would like to add photos of my mother's original paintings to her Wikipedia page. I don't think any of us know who took those photos years ago. How can I upload them and get them accepted?

I would also like to upload a portrait photo of her to her page. I know the photographer's name and am happy to give him credit, but I don't see any way to do this. Help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by MimiGPF (talk • contribs) 16:57, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

@MimiGPF: With regards to question one, photographing a painting is generally not seen as an original work for copyright purposes, in the same way scanning a printed picture wouldn't be creating a new work (see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag for the details). This means that the creator or rights holder of the original work would license it for use here.
For the second, you would need the photographers permission to upload and license the image - we don't just store images for Wikipedia, all of our images must be released under a suitable free license - see Commons:Licensing, which expands on free licensing, and gives the licenses we accept.
~~ OxonAlex - talk 17:40, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
  • @MimiGPF: Assuming the paintings are essentially two-dimensional and the photographs are accurate representations of the paintings, then the photographs of the paintings would have no separate copyright. The issue would be entirely the copyright of the paintings. If you mother is still alive, she would presumably hold those rights, and we'd need to go through the COM:OTRS process. If she is no longer alive and you are the heir to her intellectual property, a license tag like would do.
  • As for the portrait: the rights to that would belong to the photographer, or the photographer's heirs, and COM:OTRS is almost certainly needed. - Jmabel ! talk 17:41, 20 December 2019 (UTC) Cross-posted; we are essentially in agreement.

Image of Julia Morgan

I would be very grateful if someone could help me out with this file, [5]. I believe it's currently being hosted on the English Wikipedia under non-free use. There's been a fair amount of discussion here, Commons:Village pump/Copyright#Julia Morgan and Hearst Castle and at the image's Talkpage, [6]. The consensus view is that it should be recategorized as Template:PD-US-no notice and moved to Commons. I'm afraid I don't know how to do this properly. Would someone be able to help me out and undertake the recategorizing and move. Many thanks and happy holidays! KJP1 (talk) 08:22, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

You can read en:Wikipedia:Moving_files_to_Commons. Ruslik (talk) 13:54, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
Since it's apparently PD, we don't need to transfer with any special tool (uploader on Wikipedia and history there has no special significance), so just download a copy to your machine and upload cleanly (probably with Special:Upload rather than the Wizard) here on Commons.
Then create a file talk page for it with permalinks to the relevant discussions, e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Village_pump/Copyright&oldid=382993086#Julia_Morgan_and_Hearst_Castle, and/or copy-paste those discussions to the file talk page. - Jmabel ! talk 17:56, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

I’ve created a Wikipedia account, updated the lists of shows and collections, etc., with information after 2010, and made a couple of minor edits in the Further Reading section. The artist would like to update the image to a more current work, and has provided the image he'd like to use along with formal consent to publish it under the free license: Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).

Fairly easy. You can find that yellow "Cat-a-lot" button on many pages, such as search results, categories, gallery pages etc. Click on it, enter the name of the category you want to add files to or remove them from, and press  Enter. Some categories will appear. Now, select files by clicking on them. When you're done, just choose an action from Cat-a-lot menu. @Ahmad252 and Lotje: This tool is only suitable for use under certain conditions, which limits the flexibility when handling different files.--Kai3952 (talk) 17:25, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
@Kai3952: It's a mass-editing tool. You can, for example, make a gallery at your sandbox (like what I did here), select all images in that gallery using Cat-a-lot, and perform certain actions on them. Hotcat can also help you, in case you've missed that. It's more flexible. Ahmadtalk 19:55, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
I need a variety of categories when I work on different files. If the community wants me to work more efficiently, Cat-a-lot should be designed to be intelligent enough to make these "flexibility" edits, instead of hand entering the category. Why didn't they think about each file has its own "uniqueness" when they blame me for not using Cat-a-lot while working?--Kai3952 (talk) 08:26, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

Changing name on picture submissions

I have finally gotten my name changed. So now, is it possible to globally (within commons) change the name shown on my picture contributions? Jim Evans (talk) 20:33, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

Concern regarding Arabic Wikipedia

Hello

To safeguard our beloved Wikipedia from editors and administrators who abuse or misuse their role in Wikipedia. Sorry to trouble you....I am writing to you because I am not sure whom to contact.

I noted over the years that Jihadist Muslim extremists are trying to control the published material in Arabic , and even worse, to propagate their extremist ideologies. They are self-appointed censors as to whether a publication complies with their views or doesn't.

They call themselves Ahl-Al-Sunna wal- Jama'a, which is the name of the minority Jihadist Islamic sect of Al-Qaida and ISIS, aiming at misleading people in that they are the majority of Muslims, by mere playing with words. There is an extensive page on Wikipedia entitled ( Ahl Al-Sunna wal- Jama'a اهل السنة والجماعة), promoting their Jihadist ideology .

There is another vast page entitled (Reference books of Ahl aL-Sunna wal- Jama'a) which is a list of hundreds of books, and same number of pages, a page for each book.

There is another page entitled ( Ideology books of Ahl Al-Snna wal- Jama'a ) with a list of 101 books...and same number of page, one for each book.

There is another page entitled ( Wikipedians from Ahl Al-Sunna wal- Jama'a) enlisting hundreds of them.

Their "boxes" on their user pages plainly, proudly and shamelessly say that they are followers of Ahl Al-Snna wal- Jama'a., and from their Talk pages and corresponding with each other you can easily detect how they liaise with one another.

There are many other pages which are specially edited to explain the details of their beliefs and practices.

All in all , hundreds if not thousands of pages of Arabic Wikipedia are devoted to their ideology ...millions and millions of words.

There are many entries on English Wikipedia too, which need to be scrutinized.

We have to remember that these people are electronically legible, especially those who live in the West, who have rendered themselves devotedly available to its cultural institutions with an astronomical number of personal contributions. I can tell from personal experience , Amazon is another domain for their activity.

They have been defeated on the ground but their ideology will remain for as long as we are careless.

Kind regards Haywi (talk) 18:49, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, I wonder if you could move it over to your policy makers other than those of Arabic Wikipedia. Or kindly send me a name and address to contact.Haywi (talk) 10:15, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
This clearly seems to be a matter for Meta Wiki. This is in case the problem can not be solved within the Arabic Wikipedia or when there are rules established that contradict in a fundamental way to the general rules esablished by the Wikimedia Foundation. Metawiki is the place to discuss problems on a broader scope. If you want to discuss the subject there, it would be very helpful when you can select and link some distict pages where you can show very clearly how the article got altered to match the ideology. A part of the case includes the way users get treated, when they oppose such alterations. Are there admins that protect the ideology? You need to show your case in details. Wikipedia never forgets, so even deleted pages can be reviewed by some people on meta with extended rights, when you still can provide the link to it. So there is no hiding, when you can point it out. Please take some effort to learn what Meta Wiki is and how it works to be effective in what you are doing. You then might post your request on https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Forum and provide some deep links.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 10:50, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
@Haywi: coming across this page, I went to أهل السنة والجماعة only to find out at the chapter علم السلوك, double link to Desouki. You might wish to adapt this. Thank you for your time. :-) Lotje (talk) 12:26, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

@Jmabel: can you help me please?Edward Zigma (talk) 16:35, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
  • Hey Edward Zigma. I realize the author may be very busy, but it's important that we correctly verify the license of the work, so that we can host it here on Commons by use for anyone forever. So what we really need is for the author themselves to send a message to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and one of our volunteers can help work with them to make sure the image can be uploaded here. GMGtalk 16:42, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
    • Or she can tweet the fact of the permission (must indicate specific license, "Yeah use it" is not enough), and you can link that tweet in the permission section of Information. - Jmabel ! talk 17:40, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
      • In addition to what GMG & Jmabel said, the best option is for her to send her permission to COM:OTRS. However, since she is busy right now, a simple comment of “I shall hereby release the permission of this image for public use under a XXX license. Also, do remember to archive the link to the image to some cloud service such as archive.org for traceability. Minorax (talk) 01:42, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

Creating a new page of our company

To whom it may concern,

Hello. My name is Stacy Kim and I am a "Global PR Manager" of a company called Class101.

I would like to create an English Wikipedia page of our company and I was just wondering how I can do this.

Attaching a short introduction of Class101 & some references below.

Thank you very much!

Sincerely, Stacy Kim

    • Class101** is an e-learning company based in Seoul, South Korea. Class101 users, known as "classmates," are able to take lessons from top-tier professionals in areas such as design, K-POP, culinary arts, musical instruments, sports, lifestyle activities, and many more. The essential feature of Class101 service is "class material preparation," in which the required materials needed for the class are carefully planned, prepared, and provided to the classmates along with quality online course videos. Over 460 courses opened in December 2019.

Class101 retains an extensive "hobby-related" course library of art, craft, digital drawing, and cooking. However, in order to help its classmates to gain career-related education that can be applied in their real lives, the company has recently added "Career Course" category. It includes topics such as marketing, design, launching a startup, music, and many more. Notably, famous hip-hop genre producers, *Groovyroom* and *Gray,* have launched "music producing" courses with Class101. Their courses have received nation-wide attention. Furthermore, Class101 has initiated their first US and Japan market launch in November, 2019 and is meeting up with global classmates.

Eight students of UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science & Technology) found *Pedaling*, which was a student startup project and the company offered tutor matching services. However, the business didn't quite meet the expected results and decided to take a different direction; hence, Class101 was established in March 2018. In the following month, the company obtained multiple investments from various investment and venture capital companies such as Softbank. Class101 is collaborating with 8,000+ creative and professional lecturers and the courses are maintaining an average of 98.5% overall satisfaction rate. The number of employees grew from just 8 to 100, which reflects the company's rapid growth. Class101 office is currently located on the 13th floor of Seoul Square building in front of Seoul Station.

  • Hey Stacy. It seems you have made your way over to Wikimedia Commons, rather than Wikipedia proper. Wikimedia Commons is a repository for free media, for use by our sister projects like Wikipedia, and also the general public. If you would like, you can use the article wizard to create a draft on the English Wikipedia, that can be reviewed by an experienced volunteer who can offer feedback prior to publishing. As you are an employee of the subject on which you would like to write, you should also review the English Wikipedia's guidance on managing conflicts of interest and take care to abide by the standards there. Digging files from cat

Is it possible to retrieve unused files from a specific category? Minorax (talk) 07:41, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

  • "Unused" in what sense? - Jmabel ! talk 17:32, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
    • @Jmabel: Hi, lost track of this. Erm.. Unused as in the file is not used in any articles, draft, userspace. Minorax (talk) 09:03, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
      • @Minorax: So specifically not used in any Wikipedia? or any WMF project? But mention on talk pages doesn't count? (Glad to hear you are not trying to find non-WMF usage since that would be very hard to work out.)
      • I doubt we currently have such a tool; it would need to harness the code behind Special:GlobalUsage and run it on all the files in the category. If you are specifically looking for unused files, it could stop for a given file once it found a single use.
      • You might make a request at Commons:Bots/Work_requests, but do make sure to be as specific as possible about what is needed. - Jmabel ! talk 15:37, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

@Stpl mark: To upload an image here, you are licensing it under a license that states all of the following apply:
  • Republication and distribution must be allowed.
  • Publication of derivative work must be allowed.
  • Commercial use of the work must be allowed.

Unless you personally created and hold the copyright for the logo, it is unlikely you have permission to release the image under such a license.

@Acxcossdamirror and Jmabel: the sources are clear. non denominal islam does not exist as branch. It is only a rhetoric. In some case, shia or sunni muslim claim that to avoid the fitna or to claim that their movement is the true islam. For Quranism, each Quranist believe to its own quranism, with his own open bar interpretation. --Panam2014 (talk) 00:36, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
@Panam2014 and Acxcossdamirror: If this is about File:Madhhab Map3.png, Commons usually deals with issues like these by having two versions of an image. Have a version where it exists, and one where it doesn't. Which image is then used outside of Commons isn't something Commons is concerned with. See Commons:Disputed territories for an essay. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 07:25, 27 December 2019 (UTC)

Pictures on Google Street View

Hello. I'm a person on Wikipedia that is currently writing about all the embassies in the world. I wondered if it's okay to use pictures from the Google Street View in my articles? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChrilleL (talk • contribs)

@ChrilleL: Sorry, not possible, they are copyright and not freely licensed. However, the chances are good that you'll find such images here. Rodhullandemu (talk) 12:33, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
Just to add ChrilleL, I'm not sure if you are interested in writing primarily for the English Wikipedia or the Swedish Wikipedia, but if it's English, you can use en:Template:OSM Location map in articles. It won't give you street view, but it will help to populate articles with useful media especially where none else exists. It doesn't look like it's been transferred over to Swedish, but if you know someone there who is particularly technically inclined, they can probably import it there too. Good luck on your articles! hi i just upload a logo of khojinindia and also provide reference but not understand the problem please is there any hero resolve the issue...

--Shruti20111986 (talk) 17:10, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

@Shruti20111986: You haven't provided a license for the image. We only hold free media here, and everything must meet the following four criteria:
  • Republication and distribution must be allowed.
  • Publication of derivative work must be allowed.
  • Commercial use of the work must be allowed.
  • The license must be perpetual (non-expiring) and non-revocable.
There is a list of allowable licenses here. Please add one of these to the image. If you don't want to license your image under these terms, add G7 to the page, and we will delete the image.
Thanks, 17:24, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
Additionally, unless you own the copyright to the image, you must get the copyright holder to contact COM:OTRS to confirm the image is licensed under the stated license. Be aware that in some cases the original designer of the logo, not the logo user, may hold copyright. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 17:25, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

Assuming the ownership of an account

I believe that this is still a problem. Occasionally, a user that seemingly belongs to an organization uploads fair use files and claims that the release the file under a cc-by license. Should we assume that they are indeed the organization or should sysops block them per COM:UPOL, tag the image and ask them to send in their permission and verify their account in the mean time? Came across this file and was wondering about it. Minoraxtalk (formerly 大诺史) 12:29, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Hey Minorax. Commons actually does allow accounts named after organizations as a matter of course. Though having a shared account is still prohibited by the terms of use. So it's not all exactly consistent. However, regardless of what the name of an account is, we do not presume that they represent a company, simply because they seem to claim so on-wiki. If they should like to upload official images owned by the organization, they will need to either verify the image, verify the account, or both. GMGtalk 12:40, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
@GreenMeansGo: COM:UPOL states "only allowed on Commons if verified". Furthermore this extends to a person claiming to be a photographer and uploads images that he/she "took", which I believe, isn't covered by COM:UPOL. Minoraxtalk (formerly 大诺史) 12:46, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
@Minorax: Yes, they should need to be verified. Otherwise we should nominate their uploads for DR pending verification. We give more leeway to own work uploads by individuals where we have no reason to suspect anything is out of place (e.g., the image is not available online, the original meta data is in-tact, the user credits their SUL rather than some other real name). But we would not give this same leeway to uploads that seem to be of obvious corporate ownership. Having said that, blocking may not be rendered preventative unless they ignore the guidance given, and continue to upload official files without verification. They could just give up and never come back, in which case we probably wouldn't even notice most of the time whether the account ended up blocked or not.
You also have to consider that a seemingly official account may actually be just a fan account. You know, User:Marvel-Comics1 may just be a teenager that really likes Marvel Comics, doesn't understand fair/free use, and wants to upload images of their favorite characters. Of course, we wouldn't allow them to continue to upload copyright violations, but when warned, they may just go off and register User:JamesThomas1998 instead. At least that's always been my take on it. Maybe others feel differently. GMGtalk 14:01, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
@GreenMeansGo: Great to have another POV. Thanks! Minoraxtalk (formerly 大诺史) 14:08, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Uploading Media Files

How can we upload a media file to Wikipedia? As it take only one format that is JPEG. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Solarpens30 (talk • contribs) 12:52, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

Please, see Commons:File formats. Ruslik (talk) 18:24, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

I'm looking through the files at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Ελ Γκρέκο, and I'm really having trouble making heads or tails of this one in particular. From what I can tell, it's an image of Saint Apostolos of St. Laurence, an Orthodox saint, but one who (surprisingly) doesn't seem to have any article anywhere other than in Greek. Either that, or the Greek article has been wrongly isolated in Wikidata. It's easy enough to say "it looks pretty darn old", and it can be found in several places online, but the lot of them look like amateurish blogs and the like, and nothing I'd be comfortable pulling a date from. Long story short, I'm not entirely sure how we can go about putting any date on this at all, even though it is very probably hundreds of years old. Anybody have any ideas? GMGtalk 14:03, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

I posted this picture of the Gulf Coast solitary bee yesterday. It is not my own work. The picture is from an non-profit organization called the Center for Biological Diversity. If you follow this link and click on the photo it will take you to where the photo came from. At the bottom of the page it says "avaliable for media use with appropriate credit". Is this acceptable to use?

Update photo of celebrity

How can I update a photo of celebrity on Wikipedia? The photos are usually owned by the agency or taken by news agency. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Soyabeancurd123 (talk • contribs) 02:24, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

  • @Soyabeancurd123: Typically you cannot do this. If the image is copyrighted (and most works created in recent decades are copyrighted from the moment of creation, under the Berne Convention), then only the holder of the copyright can grant a suitable license to use on Commons. Typically, for photographs of living people, most of the Wikipedias would have exactly the same standard on this as Commons.
  • If these people appear at times in public near where you are, you can take photos yourself and upload them with an appropriate license. - Jmabel ! talk 02:45, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Riyadh International Book Fair معرض الرياض الدولي للكتاب

I'm trying to find an illustration of the Riyadh International Book Fair with a suitable license (a random draft article for creation I'm trying to help a new editor with). There are some at https://www.flickr.com/photos/150127074@N03/, but trying to upload them with the Wizard gets me "A file identical to this file (:$1) has previously been deleted. You should check that file's deletion history. If you disagree with the reason for deletion, please make an undeletion request instead of re-uploading." I quote literally: there is unformatted wikitext displayed in the Upload Wizard interface. Obviously I don't want to upload inadmissible material, but this message was not very helpful: I have no idea what the files were previously called, so I cannot look up why they were deleted.

Nor can I find other images of this topic with a suitable license; I don't want to upload any particular image, just an image of this topic. Can anyone advise? HLHJ (talk) 05:50, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

  • @HLHJ: Could you indicate at least one specific file that you tried to upload that had this issue, rather than just what Flickr account was in question? - Jmabel ! talk 22:21, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
    • Sure, sorry, Jmabel. The two would not upload, with the above error message, are the files that the Wizard auto-called 36305718296_7d732fe889_o.jpg and 35953427530_33454a0bf9_o.jpg, and Flickr2Commons (which failed silently) called 8a8bf95e87d26407d6e9d390ea4393aa (36305718296).jpg and Nic6195538 (35953427530).jpg. In more human-readable form: the link I gave in my first post will show a small set of images, including
  1. a group of women walking into the book fair, two on their cell phones, the center one in niqab and carrying a silver handbag
  2. a group of black-clad young women taking selfies with an author
I don't want to upload the others if there is reason to doubt that the licensor is the photographer. Seriously, this event reportedly attracted half a million people last year, systemic bias aside, someone must have a usable photo... HLHJ (talk) 23:16, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
All is now clear. I did not get that error message, or any error message; the background around the images turned red, though. I wouldn't knowingly try to upload things from a blacklisted account; my browser settings may be to blame for the lack of error. Thank you very much for your help, Jmabel. There really seem to be no open-licensed illustrations of this book fair... but plenty of copyright ones. Ah well. HLHJ (talk) 01:45, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
Apparently personal cameras, but not cell phones, are banned at the fair, at least some years... HLHJ (talk) 04:44, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
@HLHJ: can this image be of any help to you? Lotje (talk) 06:28, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
Thank you, Lotje! It's about as close as we have, but it looks nothing like the Riyadh event, where the main interest is international publishers with books not usually available in SA. I can't think of a suitable tie-in caption, but feel free to add it if you can. Sadly, we just don't have many images from Saudi Arabia; oddly, too, in this case, as the government is very keen on publicizing the event. Apparently there is not the same awareness of open licenses as at the Tasnim News Agency. I've added photo-req to the page, and the not-very-active Wikiproject. HLHJ (talk) 22:13, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
@HLHJ: sorry I could be of more help, but maybe a small push will make that not-very-active Wikiproject more active... Lotje (talk) 09:19, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
I found a way around it, by illustrating people and concepts connected to the fair, and adding a fair-use fair logo. Not optimal, but functional. HLHJ (talk) 22:54, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
@HLHJ: Just to mention that please do not upload fair use images to Commons. They will be deleted on sight. Instead please upload them to other projects accept fair use files respectively, regards.廣九直通車 (talk) 11:10, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
Yes, 廣九直通車, that's what I did. I uploaded it as fair-use to en-wp.[15] Still, good to mention, on a high-traffic noticeboard. HLHJ (talk) 22:30, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Founding of Melbourne image

Hi. I am trying to upload a higher quality version of File:Ac.earlymelb.jpg, which I have cropped from the original at State Library of Victoria.[16][17] The author isn't specified and the exact date of creation isn't known but the site claims it is out of copyright. The image depicts events in 1835 and a replica of the image was published in New York in September 1885; so there is a 50 year window of creation. As the author, country of origin and date of creation are unknown, what would be the best copyright tags (or set of tags) to apply when uploading? Hi,

I created the page listed above. A lot of content was removed citing sources. How do I add content where my father and I are first sources? There are not articles to cite as this is primary.

Also, there were photos marked for deletion. I don't see how I can reply to the contributor who marked them. The photos are scanned from original documents. I own all of the photos and documents

thank you gary— Preceding unsigned comment added by Daliwong (talk • contribs) 19:21, 31 December 2019‎ (UTC)

Hey Daliwong. Unfortunately, things like personal experience and first-hand recollections are not acceptable as source on Wikipedia. If no one has published the information previously in things like books, magazines and newspapers, then I'm afraid your only recourse is to be the person who publishes the information in those types of things. Wikipedia cannot cite something that is unpublished, and Wikipedia cannot include information that cannot be cited.
As to the images, I'm afraid that owning a physical copy of the photo, just like owning a physical copy of the latest blockbuster movie that you bought at the store, doesn't actually mean you own the intellectual property rights to the copyright for it. If you didn't take the photos, and don't know who did, then it's likely they cannot be uploaded here, because the person who took the photos would own the copyright, and would need to be the ones that released them under a free license. That is, unless there is reason to believe that they are so old they have fallen into the public domain, which usually requires that they were taken before 1924, or that the person who took them has been dead 70 years. GMGtalk 19:51, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Hello The pictures were taken by the hotel photographer. This person was employed by the hotel, and thus the hotel owns them, which was my father — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daliwong (talk • contribs) 20:34, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

  • @Daliwong: I don't have time to go through all of these, but just picking one for example: at File:Shawanga-1957-construction-new-inside.jpg you stated Own work. That is, you said you were the photographer. Now you are giving a much more roundabout story: that they were taken by a hotel employee, implicitly that they were taken as part of that person's job, that therefore copyrights were owned by the hotel, which was owned by your father, and that you are heir to his intellectual property rights. Presuming that it all true, it is also complicated: much too complicated to resolve by simple assertion without us really even being able to tell whose account this is.
  • I strongly suggest you go through the confidential process outlined at COM:OTRS to (1) demonstrate you are who you say you are and (2) make a formal statement of that chain of ownership and how you come to be in a position to own rights to these. Then the appropriate license tag would be , not cc-by-sa-4.0. - Jmabel ! talk 23:26, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
