I'd like to use this image in but can't work out its license pemissions - can you help? Horatius At The Bridge (talk) 08:25, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Horatius At The Bridge, as the work is more than 120 years old, we can assume the author died more than 70 years ago - which means {{PD-old-assumed}} can be used. Anything from before 1925 is PD in the USA, so {{PD-US-expired}} is also used. To indicate that the work is a digitalisation, and that our view is that this does not create a new work for copyright purposes, {{Pd-art}} is used.
So to put all of this together:
{{PD-Art-two|PD-old-assumed|PD-US-expired}}
Would be the relevant tag. To upload this via the upload wizard, upload the image, then select the file is not my own work, then select "Another reason not mentioned above", and enter {{PD-Art-two|PD-old-assumed|PD-US-expired}} in the space.
Note - they do indicate a license of their own, but this is a non commercial license not permitted here; as we take the view that digitialisations aren't new works, we can ignore this.

Screenshots: comments made by editors on Wikipedia itself and images in the public domain: can I upload to these on Wiki Commons?

A genuine question, as I've been threatened with a lifetime ban for uploading some images here, for reference in a dispute I'm having over one of my edits on the main Wiki site.

In a nutshell, I thought I could use them under UK/US gov guidelines on fair dealing/use, but was told in no uncertain terms this is not allowed (which I've checked on the site and have since found out to be true). However, the screenshots were taken of comments made on Wiki itself and images of the subject that I'm supporting are in the public domain. I've read the following:

The Wikimedia Foundation owns almost none of the content on Wikimedia sites — the content is owned, instead, by the individual creators of it. However, almost all content hosted on Wikimedia Commons may be freely reused subject to certain restrictions (in many cases). You do not need to obtain a specific statement of permission from the licensor(s) of the content unless you wish to use the work under different terms than the license states. And 'Content in the public domain may not have a strict legal requirement of attribution (depending on the jurisdiction of content reuse), but attribution is recommended to give correct provenance.'

Help appreciated so I know where I stand in the future. Thanks, SR SethRuebens (talk) 20:01, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

@SethRuebens: Text submitted to Wikipedias by users is licensed CC-BY-SA-3.0, so you should have no copyright problems with screenshots of Wikipedia text as long as you license them similarly and provide attribution. However, such images might be out of the project scope. The usual way to display this type of evidence in disputes is to simply provide a link to the relevant entry in the page's history; this is more efficient and more verifiable than uploading an image of it. Old revision of pages never go away unless they are removed by an oversighter. If you need to add annotations to the content as you did on File:Articles created by Tvcameraop.png, you could copy the content to a subpage of your user page and link to it. – BMacZero (🗩) 21:26, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
You also don't need to take the mention of blocks on the deletion messages too personally - those messages are automated and standardized. You won't be blocked unless you repeatedly ignore warnings from an administrator. – BMacZero (🗩) 21:29, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you very for the advice @BMacZero: . As for the threats they're coming from an administrator who seems to have taken a dislike to me and my presence here (coming across as very one sided in a dispute). Guess it's part and parcel of modern Wiki! Anyway, good to know about the pictures and will do my best to annotate them properly or (even better) provide the links as you've suggested. Lots to learn. Cheers. SR SethRuebens (talk) 21:47, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Want to delete an image I uploaded

I uploaded File:Cattle Creek outstation Wave Hill.jpg before remembering that I could request a higher resolution one. Having now received and uploaded File:Cattle Creek outstation, Wave Hill.jpg and used it in place of the other one, I would like to request deletion of the former. I could not see any tools on the page that I could use myself - am I missing something? (I did search the archived pages but none of the examples helped me.) Laterthanyouthink: I've tagged the image with {{Duplicate}}, which can be used when the are multiple versions of, fundamentally, the same image. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 11:41, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for that, Alex Noble. Am I able to do that myself, or does it need to be done by an admin? (If the former, where? It's not as obvious (as Wikipedia) where to put things on Wikimedia - I find all of the separate fields/boxes somewhat confusing!) Laterthanyouthink (talk) 11:54, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
Laterthanyouthink: Anyone can use the template. All it does it put the page on a list of duplicate files that admins then work through. You can place the template anywhere on the file description page really. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 12:58, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I'm Akmaie Ajam. I have uploaded a picture of a Redmi Note 9 Pro here. It is from Pixabay, here: https://pixabay.com/illustrations/xiaomi-redmi-redmi-note-9-pro-max-4936657/. I thought a free license means that I can upload here on Commons, but I made a mistake. After seeing Commons:Licensing, I then searched for Template:Pixabay, and turns out that the Pixabay license is not compatible because of the non-commercial license. But, on the page, it says:

"Pixabay License
Free for commercial use
No attribution required"

What do I do now?

--Akmaie Ajam (talk) 09:15, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

@Akmaie Ajam: , Pixabay had updated its license which doesn't resemble Creative Commons anymore. Only files uploaded before 8 Jan 2019 can be transferred to Commons, please click on this template for more information.--IM3847 (talk) 09:49, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
What do I do now? That image is the only free image of a Redmi Note 9 (line of smartphones), and everything else is either copyrighted images or unrelated stuff taken with the Redmi Note 9. Help me, @IM3847: , help me with this. Akmaie Ajam (talk) 09:58, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

@IM3847: , I don't have a Redmi Note 9 (the series), can you or someone else take a picture of a Redmi Note 9/9 Pro/9S/9 Pro Max? Any help appreciated. Akmaie Ajam (talk) 10:42, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
@Akmaie Ajam: Provided the gadget's importance an image might get added shortly. If you're interested in adding image, easiest way is to click an image at the nearby mobile store. For further assistance about upload process, you are free to contact us here.--IM3847 (talk) 10:59, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
Sorry for posting after the issue is resolved, but thank you for your help. Akmaie Ajam (talk) 12:31, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
@IM3847: , Sorry, what do you mean click an image? Do you mean "take a picture"? And also, I'm at home right now because of the COVID-19 pandemic. I cannot leave home because of the risk of contracting COVID-19. Sorry. Regards, Akmaie Ajam (talk) 13:58, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
@Akmaie Ajam: I can understand that and my previous reply was only intended to be after the end of Pandemic. Meanwhile a good image may get added by any commoner. It is also possible to process an image via OTRS if any friend of you is interested in donating the image of gadget.--iMahesh (talk) 17:07, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
@IM3847: Ok, have a nice day. Thank you for helping me. Akmaie Ajam (talk) 02:06, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
@IM3847: Sorry for bringing this up again, but I forgot to ask: What you're going to do with my images? (specifically the Pixabay Redmi Note 9 Pro Max image). Please answer this, thanks. Akmaie Ajam (talk) 03:37, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
@Akmaie Ajam: Since source of image provided is not under Creative common license, image shall get deleted in 7days.--iMahesh (talk) 08:25, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
@IM3847: I hope that, sooner than later, a photo of the Redmi Note 9 is uploaded to Commons that meets the Creative Commons (max. BY-SA) license and able to replace the photo that I uploaded, since that photo is useful and I'm working on the Redmi Note 9 page in Wikipedia. I will replace the picture shown with a Xiaomi logo that was previously there. Thank you. (I'm editing from my smartphone since the laptop sucks and when I click the Alert button, it shows nothing.) Hi there. I need some help to confirm if it is possible to use a picture from an eBay advertise that is available to everyone worldwide. This is the one File:DuPont IMR-4350 Pólvora Sem Fumaça 1 Libra.png

--Marcric (talk) 22:31, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

@Marcric: Hi there. I have deleted the image. The packaging was trivial but the photograph itself is copyrighted and non-free. Being available online does not automatically mean that something can be used elsewhere. For recent photos there has to be a statement of a free licence at the source page, otherwise we can't keep them here. De728631 (talk) 00:31, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi. I'm working on the above draft. An administrator on Commons without notice deleted all my images, "not own work", which is inaccurate in some instances. I sent a message explaining which photos I personally took from my camera and which photos were taken by Emanuele Cannistraci and which photos I have permission to use from the owner. I have not heard back from the administrator. How can I reinstate photos? I actually only care about a handful of them. I'm a fairly new editor in the last four months so I am learning the process.

Any help would be appreciated. ``sharonroselaw`` — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sharonroselaw (talk • contribs) 05:47, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: That is exactly what I am trying to achieve now, to sort this huge family archive, which as to now looks like several huge boxes of everything, this is why I thought scanning photos is the best way of archiving them, so do I need to wait to that day when I will be able locate all the neganives and submitt them by scanning? or there is some other way? Please advise? Of course I will try locating this particular one primarily.Message. Marius Domeika (talk) 13:30, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
@Marius Domeika: You're probably out of luck on the anonymous street photographers -- copyright will be seriously muddy -- and I wouldn't worry so much about negatives, send a couple to OTRS and explain the situation. For things you can have reasonable confidence your grandfather took, credit him as the author, and license with {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}, {{PD-heirs}} or some similar license.
You don't mention what country these were taken in; for some countries the street photographers' work could be OK if it's old enough... - Jmabel ! talk 16:26, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
@Marius Domeika: You can save them locally or upload them to Flickr et al until you are sure.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:27, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

Upload new version of image

Hi - I actually tried to ask this question around 4 months ago, but it seems that things did not proceed at all so I’d love to listen to advice from other users here. Briefly speaking, I was trying to upload a new version of a svg file, but I did not see the “Upload a new version of this svg” button on the page (The other contributors updated the file with this method; basically what I/the others was/were trying to do was to add translated version of the svg). I wondered perhaps the reason was that I was a new user at that time and my account had not passed the “autoconfirmation” steps. I did receive a message informing me that I had edited for 10 times with this account, but is there additional process that I have to do in order to apply for a legitimate user status that can edit images with the “Upload new version” method? Or could it be due to other reasons? Thanks so much everyone :D JPiGGoD (talk)

@JPiGGoD: Hi, and welcome. The "Overwrite existing files (reupload)" right is granted to Autoconfirmed users, contributors who are logged in to an account created more than four days ago. Your account was created more than four days ago, so you should be able to reupload now.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:06, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
@JPiGGoD: Hi, In the previous discussion (6 April 2020), it was very difficult for people to answer precisely your question as long as you kept secret what file you were speaking of. With some detective research in your other contributions, I guess that you are probably thinking of "File:Herd immunity.svg". When you write "things did not proceed at all", I suppose that you mean that you still don't find the link "upload a new version of this file". In your other contributions, I also see that you mentioned that you looked at "File:test.svg". I guess that "File:test.svg" may have misled you, because "File:test.svg" has a special additional big button in a different place where it does not exist on other files. So, perhaps you are not looking in the right place when you are looking for the link "upload a new version of this file" on "File:Herd immunity.svg". The normal link on normal files is a small link below the section "file history" (the section with all the small thumbnails of the different versions). -- Asclepias (talk) 12:39, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

According to this search return, Bing characterizes the above image as public domain. [1]. As such, should I be allowed to remove the deletion notice on the above file? Nalatrugareeysta (talk) 08:52, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

@Nalatrugareeysta: Search engines are not reliable sources of copyright information. In this case, if you click on the image in the Bing search results, the next page says "Image may be subject to copyright," and then the source page[2] says at the bottom "All Rights Reserved Copyright. © 1999-2020, www.hiiraan.com". This suggests that Bing's characterisation is incorrect, so you shouldn't remove the notice. If for some reason you think Bing is right, you can convert the speedy deletion request into a full deletion request using the "Challenge speedy deletion" button. --bjh21 (talk) 12:37, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Question about selfies

Hello,

I realize that selfies can also contain visual information that is useful. But sometimes the same guy gets tiresome and the photos don't add that much in my opinion. How tolerant is the Commons regarding these? e.g. this guy has turned up repeatedly in photos of Pakistan, almost always in categories where there are plenty of good photos, in this case Category:Derawar Fort

What is the view here about these selfies? Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 16:37, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

  • In my personal opinion? These look a lot like fairly low quality unused personal photos by a non-contributor (uploaded by a bot). But since there may be some arguable scope here (though doubtful IMO), it may be the safer bet to open a DR. GMG talk 16:43, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
Hello, Useless selfies can be deleted with a deletion request. If there are many files from the same source, they can be grouped in one deletion request. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:47, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. I guess I'll think about collecting a list of them. He usually uses "Haddid" or "Haddid Uddin". If I knew how to do a good search, I could just round them up! Krok6kola (talk) 17:56, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Other user credited my work as his own

Hi, I really don't use Commons very often so I don't know what to do. User Locky74 has created this image: File:Distribution of seats in 10th assembly in Croatian Parliament.png when in fact it is a derivative work of my own: File:Sabor 2020 elections seats.png Can someone please remove the file added by user Locky74? Or what should be done? Thanks in advance --Tuvixer (talk) 19:54, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

All acceptable licenses on Commons allow derivative works, so what User:Locky74 did is quite okay and there is no need to remove any file. The only thing missing is attribution of the original file and author, which can be easily added. --rimshottalk 21:13, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Speedy delete after deletion nomination

I recently put File:Nicholas Latifi.jpg up for deletion nomination, however now reading again through the speedy deletion criteria it probably meets F1, can you nominate it for speedy deletion after a regular nomination has taken place? FozzieHey (talk) 00:20, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

@FozzieHey: Hi, and welcome. Yes, someone did that, and the file was deleted by Jmabel (Copyright violation; see Commons:Licensing (F1): Obvious copyvio, no need to let DR play out.), thanks for asking.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:03, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

How to upload a book?

Hello. I found a scan of 1903 book about Leo Tolstoy: https://the-morning-spb.livejournal.com/456700.html It's about 100 pages (JPEG, 3000x4000px each). Movie posters

How to upload movie posters found on IMDb or uploaded on social media platforms from official accounts like Twitter, Facebook. e.g 1 Siraj1989 (talk) 15:59, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

  • @Siraj1989: You cannot. They will be copyrighted and not free-licensed. There are some exceptions for very old things, which will vary by country, etc., but none of these will apply to anything from the last 50 years or so. If there is something older than that you want to deal with, come back with the specifics (name of film; country; date; ideally a link to where you found it) and someone here can help you work out the copyright status. - Jmabel ! talk 16:30, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
@Siraj1989: That external link you used points to en:File:Betaal logo.jpg, which was uploaded to English Wikipedia for Fair Use subject to en:WP:F. We do not accept Fair Use files here on Wikimedia Commons.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:44, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thank you so much for your response. I have seen many pages on Wikipedia where posters from IMDb and social media pages have been used and uploaded by someone who does not have the copyright or not the copyright holder. Please see this one film poster. Siraj1989 (talk) 15:22, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
@Siraj1989: As with the prior example, that is the English-language Wikipedia, not Commons. Yes, in some circumstances you can upload non-free media on the English-language Wikipedia, but Commons (where you asked this question) is not the English-language Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 15:45, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

Photo Deleted

Hi there,

I recently uploaded a photo that I own and it was taken down. Can you please advise why it was taken down and what I can do to get it back up?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ACooper1027 (talk • contribs) 22:06, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

@ACooper1027: Hi, According to your comment on the page User talk:Didym, you obtained the photo from Getty. Getty allow only limited rights to use the photo as described in the contract you passed with them. They do not give rights to relicense photos under free licenses. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:49, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
@Asclepias: Hi, Thank you for your response. The photo that was on the page originally was from Getty, so I'm a bit confused. Is there a way for me to reupload not under free licenses? ACooper1027 (talk) 23:30, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
Good observation. The photo "File:Billy Eichner May 2014.jpg" was specially taken for Yahoo News. So, it can be assumed that Yahoo News fully and exclusively own all the rights to it and they can license it any way they want, including under a free license, as they did. (For more discussions about similar cases, you can see this page.) The file you uploaded "File:BE Headshot.jpg" I suppose was not specially taken for you exclusively and you only acquired a limited non-exclusive right to use it. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:55, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

Convenience links: File:Billy Eichner May 2014.jpg, File:BE Headshot.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 03:14, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

I am the uploader of the file in question, so I want to ask, which license I shoud add. The picture is a screeshot from a digitalised version of a music journal from 1921.

The picture shows the German composer Georg Vollerthun (1876-1945). Source: Neue Musik-Zeitung 42 (1921), p. 252. (Nr. 16: 15. 8. 1921) Link to the Source: http://www.digizeitschriften.de/dms/toc/?PID=PPN827938837_0042 There is no photographer mentioned in the source

--Adrian L. (talk) 23:00, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

  • @Adrian L.: Perhaps I'm confused. You are the uploader. You are supposed to upload only images that are in the public domain or appropriately free-licensed. I see no basis to believe this to be free-licensed. On what basis are you saying it is in the public domain? If the photo is from 1921, let's imagine that the photographer was 40 years old (hardly the youngest reasonable age); he/she could easily have lived until the 1960s, far less than 70 years ago (the relevant time after death in German copyright law, as far as I know). Am I missing something? - Jmabel ! talk 03:22, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

Simple drawing to illustrate a building shape, based on the architect's drawing

I have created a very simple outline drawing of a building's floorplan, to illustrate the shape of the building which is otherwise difficult to describe. The original architect's drawing (obviously much more detailed and complicated) is from the 1970s, so about 40-50 years old in case that matters. Is it okay for me to upload my drawing, or does it violate some copyright or policy because it's based on somebody else's work?

PS: The drawing is available on the architect's (or rather his estate's, as he's long since dead) website. I don't suppose there's any way that image could be either used (as in, uploaded and then linked to an article), under any circumstances? Thanks, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 14:44, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

  • @DoubleGrazing: Certainly the original drawing is still copyrighted. As for whether your derivative work is above the threshold for copyright, it's hard to say, especially without seeing it. I'd say this question might be better asked at Commons:Village pump/Copyright where you will find more expertise about subtleties like the threshold of originality in various countries. - Jmabel ! talk 15:54, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
    • Thanks @Jmabel: I'll head on over to the village pump, in that case. I'm happy to upload the drawing for inspection, of course, but didn't want to do so in case it violates some rule. Thanks again, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 16:10, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg images as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each image. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their website or social media or send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Hi Minorax, Sorry should've said I'm not a licence reviewer, I just happened to come across the file via EN and saw it wasn't LR tagged and figured it needed to be done urgently as some YouTube uploaders upload videos under a CC licence and then either in a few days or a week change it to a copyright licence .... and if we have no proof of said file originally being under a CC licence then 9/10 it gets deleted,

How to mass import?

I would like to mass import the Boynton Collection of Early Claremont, a collection of historical photographs of Pomona College. They were all taken prior to 1925, so they're all in the public domain, since they're in the collection they're presumably all significant enough that they would be useful here, and since they're maintained by a library I assume they likely have the proper metadata/structuring etc. that'd allow for import. But I've never done a mass import before, so I'm not sure how to go about requesting or doing it. Sdkb (talk) 05:04, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

a little confused. Was given a photo by the photographer and he gave permission to post it in wikipedia. I dont see a "tag" that would indicate this. Can someone advise me how to upload to commons and properly denote its copyright release status? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zencity57 (talk • contribs) 12:26, 17 August 2020‎ (UTC)

@Zencity57: Hi, There is no tag for that, because it is not allowed by Wikimedia's fundamental principles and mission, which is to offer material that is reusable by anyone for any use. A restrictive "permission to post it in wikipedia" is not compatible with this mission. It is not possible to upload it to Commons. For more details about the policy and free licenses, please see Commons:Licensing -- Asclepias (talk) 13:05, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
@Zencity57: (Edit conflict) Welcome to Wikimedia Commons! Our rules mean that "permission to post it in wikipedia" is not enough for a file to be acceptable on Wikimedia Commons. Commons only accepts free photos, which means that anyone must be allowed to use the photo for any purpose. Usually, this is done by using one of the Creative Commons family of licences, but note that ones including the "NC" or "ND" components are not allowed. If your photographer is willing to release his work under one of those, there are two ways for you to demonstrate that he has done this. If the photographer has a Web site where he posts pictures, he could post this one with a note explaining precisely which licence it's released under. For instance, "I hereby release this photograph under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence". You would then upload the picture here and tag it with (in this example) {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} and {{LicenseReview}}. If that's not possible, there's a more complicated process involving email described on COM:OTRS. Please ask again if you have any problems with this. --bjh21 (talk) 13:10, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Dear Sir or Madam, Please help me to accept the photo (Marcin slezak.jpg) placed on the Wikipedia website: Marcin Slezak. The photo was made for my (Marcin Ślęzak) order by a professional photographer Marcin Gorgolewski (I paid for it e few years ago) and it is generally available on the website (https://www.its.waw.pl/8266,pl,Foto-Wideo.html) as the first photo made available to the media and journalist. Please do not delete this photo and keep it published on the website. Yours sincerely, Marcin Ślęzak --StasiekXYZ (talk) 22:28, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

  • @StasiekXYZ: You removed the tag indicating that it wasn't properly licensed, and you specified a license, but you didn't really solve the problem. Presumably the photographer owns the copyright to the photo, but you say the photographer is unknown, so how can you possibly know that the owner of the copyright possibly have offered the license? - Jmabel ! talk 03:28, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

how to upload SVG to replace JPEG?

I created an SVG "Piezo bending principle.svg". (I'm not the creator of the existing JPEG.) I would appreciate help with uploading and properly editing the page to use it. Honestly I didn't really have time to create this and really don't have time to research how this should be done, so I apologize for not searching help/archives to figure this all out.

The original isn't only a poor choice because it's a bitmap. It's also wrong. The author must have copied his plus and minus signs and forgot to flip them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Contimuator (talk • contribs) 22:44, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

  • @Contimuator: File:Piezo bending principle.svg doesn't seem to have been uploaded. You don't say what file you mean by "the existing JPEG."
  • Under COM:OVERWRITE you don't really replace a file on Commons. You make your alternative available. Then you can go to the various Wikipedias (or other sister projects) where it is used, and you change what file is used.
  • We deliberately do not have an automated tool to replace a JPEG with an SVG. As it says at User:CommonsDelinker/commands, "To avoid drama, CommonsDelinker will ignore a command to replace an image if the new image is svg and the original is not." - Jmabel ! talk 03:33, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi JuTa I am a novice for adding photographs and need your advice for this photograph. The image is a photograph of my grandfather which I received from my mother. The photograph was taken in 1905, which you can see as the ball that Walter is holding says 1905-6 on it. You can see the photograph is slightly damaged and there is nothing on the front or rear of it to say who the photographer was. From the links you sent me I cannot understand the copyright position of the photo so perhaps you can help me determine the copyright status of this photograph. Is a photo from 1905 still in copyright? If it is impossible to find the original copyright holder does that mean it can not be added to the Wiki? If the original copyright has expired does this mean that because I own the photo and have scanned the photo I have now become the copyright holder? If the latter is true then can I complete the upload by adding the {{PD-self}} tag?

@BlueCrabRedCrab: So you are the photographer? Is there (or can you add) somewhere on Google clearly tied to that account that indicates that you are the same person who has this Commons account, and that you release these photos under {{Cc-0}}? If not, it seems to me you have to go through the COM:OTRS process to establish that Google account is the same person as this Commons account. Otherwise, these are all likely to be deleted as apparent copyright violations (which would have been the case if you'd uploaded them yourself as well). - Jmabel ! talk 16:05, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I took them all myself. I'm red signal Productions. And I only shared the link with my friends, who haven't uploaded anything to it. Plus, I just added to the title. Look at it again. BlueCrabRedCrab (talk) 17:40, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

remove/replace photo

Hi - I'm trying to remove the photo from https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Den_norske_tannlegeforening - the photo shows the old offices of NTF. I cannot find out how to simply remove it, and I've tried to replace it with bort the logo and a photo of the president, but I only get error messages?

Thank you for your help to update this page.

The way to remove the picture from no:Den norske tannlegeforening is to edit that article using one of the links at the top of that page. However, you should first read no:Wikipedia:Interessekonflikt since I expect it applies in your case. If you have problems with editing Norwegian Wikipedia, I'd suggest asking at no:Wikipedia:Torget or no:Wikipedia:Nybegynnerforum, where there are likely to be more people who habitually work on that project. --bjh21 (talk) 13:52, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

How do I upload an image of someone to their Wiki page?

How do I upload an image of someone to their Wiki page if I do not own the image but wish to credit the source? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonesandco902 (talk • contribs) 17:36, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

Only the copyright holder may give a free license to the image, so you would have to contact them and ask whether they would be willing to do so. An example permission mail can be found at Commons:Email_templates. This would need to be sent to OTRS (as described on that page). Keep in mind that a free license by our definition allows the file to be used by anyone for any purpose, including changing the file. --rimshottalk 22:26, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
And keep in mind that sorting out the rights on an image that you didn't create is actually one of the harder things to do here, and if you haven't got a lot of experience here you may find it a bit daunting. - Jmabel ! talk 02:45, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I'm trying to upload a photograph of a deceased woman who was a radio personality. I contacted the radio station and the manager sent this - a personal photograph she took - along with her express permission to use it in the Wikipedia article. I have an email I can forward attesting to her permission. Could you please advise which is the correct licence selection to use? Thanks from a newbie.

--Isaksenk (talk) 18:24, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

Only the copyright holder may give a free license to the image, so they have to choose which one they want to use, a permission for Wikipedia only is not enough. An example permission mail can be found at Commons:Email_templates. This would need to be sent to OTRS (as described on that page). Keep in mind that a free license by our definition allows the file to be used by anyone for any purpose, including changing the file. --rimshottalk 22:28, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Necessarily, the first thing to do here is to work out who owns the copyright of the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 02:46, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

Photo editing tools?

Are there any tools built into commons to do simple photo editing? I've got good tools on my desktop, but using them means I have to download, do my edits, and re-upload, which is a drag. For simple stuff like crop, rotate, adjust exposure, it would be a lot simpler to be able to do it right here. RoySmith (talk) 11:56, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

For the basics we have {{Rotate}} and Commons:CropTool. Not sure about exposure, but someone will know. Rodhullandemu (talk) 12:02, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
@RoySmith and Rodhullandemu: CropTool can also rotate in 90° increments, just swap the dimensions if rotating 90° or 270°.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:59, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
I don't believe we have anything for exposure. I suspect that would be tougher, though not impossible. - Jmabel ! talk 16:27, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

Identifying translations by beginner-level speakers

I just discovered (and improved) a low quality translation by a user who claimed having only a beginner level knowlegde of the target language (see Translations:Template:Translate/i18n/4/de). How can I identify more candidates of possible low quality translations ? Is there some tool that can list translations of a particular language last edited by a user with a particular babel banner on his user page ? -- Juergen 217.61.203.35 10:14, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

  • Once you've found someone who has done this once, there is a fair chance they've done it a lot; look through their contributions.
  • By the way: I would say that "non-native" isn't necessarily a problem, and even small imperfections are not a disaster but, yes, it's really bad when someone tries to write in a language where they are not even coherent. - Jmabel ! talk 17:07, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
The user in question has thousands of edits, that's why I'm asking for a tool. The problem is not that he isn't a native speaker but he is truthfully displaying a beginner-level babel banner on his user page. I changed the section headline accordingly. -- Juergen 217.61.203.35 20:28, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
So do I understand you want a tool that would look through all edits by a particular person, return all pages on which they had added the template for some specified language (e.g. {{En}}, {{De}} and made at least some additional textual change at that time, and then give you an easy way to edit those pages? I doubt there is such a tool but perhaps someone could craft one. - Jmabel ! talk 03:21, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
No, I didn' want so search for edits by a specific user, neither did I want to select pages by what content they added on the pages.
Instead I wanted to select pages being German translations (see my example above) last edited or created by users whose user pages are listed in Category:User de-1 or Category:User de-0. Just to verify translation quality. -- Juergen 217.61.203.35 22:10, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

I made this file: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Maslow%27s_Hierarchy_of_Needs2.svg for this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs

Ist that simple layout and this collection of some phrases really eligible for copyright ? -- Juergen 217.61.203.35 22:17, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
On first thought, probably yes. It's creative. If it weren't creative, people wouldn't copy it like that. Still, it's a good question. Considering Category:Maslow's hierarchy of needs, what are the criteria to say that some images are accepted on Commons and others are not? -- Asclepias (talk) 22:54, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
@Asclepias: Two specific files are under discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs2.svg. The outcome of those discussions will probably inform the disposition of the 77 files in that category, and that category as well.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:20, 13 August 2020 (UTC)

Island House 1948 Postcard Image

Convenience link for anyone trying to follow this: this is about File:Island House, Laugharne postcard.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 08:37, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

May I ask if you think there may be a fair use case for this postcard image? (temporarily uploaded to my archive.org account)

It is a copy of a postcard downloaded with permission from an Ancestry member's family tree profile gallery (no copyright claim) and is in turn a crop of an RAF aerial photo from 1948. The original RAF photo supplied via Laugharne History Society's FB page on request with no copyrght claim. A collection of similar aerial photos from this date is also currently made available via a variety of Creative Commons licences by Univ Cambridge Digital Library but this particular image is not listed - here is the class reference Laugharne Castle, Carmarthen (K-E19 Page: 1 Physical Location: Cambridge University Collection of Aerial Photography Classmark: K-E19 Subject(s): Aerial photography Date of Creation: 1948-07-26 Extent: 1 photograph Laugharne Castle, Carmarthen Horatius At The Bridge (talk) 13:21, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

I think if the original photo was taken by the RAF in 1948 and it hasn't been creatively edited since, {{PD-UKGov}} would do the job. It's a photograph taken by the UK Government before 1957-06-01, so its Crown copyright has expired. Commons doesn't host pictures solely under a claim of fair use, so if you wanted to go that way you'd need to check the policy of the project you were planning to host it on. --bjh21 (talk) 13:46, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

@Horatius At The Bridge: Here's my cleanup from that; in particular, categories are case-sensitive. - Jmabel ! talk 08:43, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi, there are distribution maps and drawings of fleas found in this publication from 1974. https://doi.org/10.1071/AJZS030 Dunnet, G. M., & Nardon, D. K. (1974). A monograph of Australian fleas (Siphonaptera). Australian Journal of Zoology Supplementary Series, 22(30), 1-273.

  • @Dieſelmaus: Just to be sure I understand: you are saying that you shot the photo of the 1990 Soviet-published book (& a photo of a book is no different than a scan, no copyright implication), not that you were the person who shot the photo for the 1990 Soviet-published book. Correct?
  • Are you saying the "font photo" is pre-1918, or that the 1990 book had a (then-recent) photo of a pre-1918 font? If the former, then we'd need to work out the status of a work (from what country? Russia?) in 1918; if the latter, and if there was any creativity in the photo, then the date is 1990 and it's presumably copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 16:10, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

-- Asclepias (talk) 19:32, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

There are other, less nice ways to import pictures from English Wikipedia, all of which amount to automation around the process of downloading from English Wikipedia and uploading to Commons. See Commons:Moving files to Commons for a list, but toolforge:commonshelper is probably most appropriate for a single transfer. Alternatively, you could simply download a new copy of the logo, at the highest resolution you can find, from the source site and upload it to Commons. I'm assuming here that the logo is simple enough that it's not subject to copyright, so you can apply {{PD-logo}} to it. If it's not, you may have to upload it directly to Sanskrit Wikipedia as non-free content. --bjh21 (talk) 10:11, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Trouble uploading fair use file locally

Hi there, I'm having a great deal of trouble trying to understand how to upload a fair use cover art for a video game article, and am afraid I'm going to get myself banned while doing it. When I attempt to upload locally in the page, it tells me I must use wikimedia commons, yet whenever I upload to wikimedia commons, it says fair use is not allowed. Can I get some clarification on this process? Is there a way to have a page "moved" instead of deleted? Here's the item in question: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lockheart_Indigo_cover.jpg

It is specifically designated for this English Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheart_Indigo

JaidenAlemni (talk) 16:45, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

@JaidenAlemni: You shouldn't be blocked for merely making a mistake. At least, not if you learn from it. Non-free files aren't allowed on Commons and there's no sensible way to move files from Commons to other projects, so I've tagged File:Lockheart Indigo cover.jpg for speedy deletion. You should be able to upload the file on English Wikipedia by starting at en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard. Since non-free cover art is one of the explicit cases it covers, I'd be surprised to find it redirecting you to Commons, but if you tell us what options you chose and what happened we might be able to work out why. Since the form is on English Wikipedia, you might find en:Wikipedia:Help desk or en:Wikipedia:Teahouse has people who better understand the process there, though. --bjh21 (talk) 16:57, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
@Bjh2: Ah-ha! Thank you so much for the link to the Wikipedia Upload Wizard! I had no idea they were separate, that's where I was tripping up. Sorry for all of the trouble, thanks again!

Photo usage question

I'd like to add a photo to the Wikipedia page for the American stage actor John Battles - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Battles. I have a photo taken on the day of his wedding, April 13, 1949. John Battles was my father's first cousin and the photo has been handed down to me. It was at the time a publicity photo, but it is a family possession. Why would it have been rejected for submission? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mcgotime (talk • contribs) 21:35, 15 August 2020‎ (UTC)

Copyright is usually held by the photographer and not by the person depicted, and owning a copy of a photo does not automatically make you own its copyright too. As a publicity photo it would still have been copyrightable for the photographer, but the terms and conditions vary from country to country. So, to help you, we need some additional information:
  • When and where was this promotional photo first published?
  • Who was the original photographer?
De728631 (talk) 21:45, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
The photo was released on April 14, 1949, so that would have the first possible publication date. The photographer is not noted. A unit of King Features Syndicate, based in New York, is who released the photo. Mcgotime (talk) 21:53, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
Ok. To be copyrighted, this image would have had to be published along with a copyright notice like "Copyright 1949 Random Photo Studios". However, this was often not done for promo photos. Unless you know of any instance where such a notice had been attached to the photo, I think you can upload it here with a license tag {{PD-US-no notice}}. De728631 (talk) 22:02, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you. I will try that.Mcgotime (talk) 22:07, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Duplicate of portrait of king Willem I of the Netherlands, Rijksmuseum SK-A-2125

  • Willem I (1772-1843), koning der Nederlanden Rijksmuseum SK-A-2125.jpeg (Wikidata Q17327417)
  • Charles Howard Hodges - Willem I (1772-1843), koning der Nederlanden - BR2065 - Rijksmuseum Twenthe.jpg (Wikidata Q43091228)

are images (photos) of the same painting. The original painting, by Charles Hodges, is in the collection of Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (inv. no. SK-A-2125, [5]) and on (permanent?) loan to Rijksmuseum Twenthe, as stated on Twenthe's website [6]. The Amsterdam image is slightly cropped; the Twenthe image shows the edges of the painting. Can the two Wikimedia commons records be merged, keeping both images (as different versions of the same image)? Or should only the Wikidata items be merged? Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CvZ (talk • contribs) 17:49, 17 August 2020‎ (UTC)

@CvZ: If it's the same painting and the problem is that it has two entries on Wikidata as if it were two different paintings, I guess the entries should be merged on Wikidata, but I'm unfamiliar with Wikidata and the issue should probably be addressed directly on Wikidata. On Commons, no, there is nothing to merge, if there are two different photographs of the same painting, those two different photographs must be in two different files on Commons, each with its own specific information. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:51, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Extracting coordinates from map.geo.admin

Is there a way to extract coordinates from this URL for use in Template:Location? I need it to correct the coordinates at File:Alpe Sella 2.jpg, File:Alpe Sella.jpg and File:Colma di Schignano, vista OSO.jpg since the EXIF ones that DschwenBot copied are wrong. Please ping me if you have an answer. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:23, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

@Jo-Jo Eumerus: If you chose "WGS 84 (lat/lon)" in the menu at the bottom left of the screen, the co-ordinates shown down there in parentheses show where the cursor is in a form that can easily be converted for {{Location}}. For instance, Lausanne railway station shows "(46.51651, 6.62929)", so you could convert that to {{Location|46.51651|6.62929}}. --bjh21 (talk) 10:20, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
That works at showing the coordinates, but you can't copy them and trying to change page makes them disappear. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 12:43, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
@Jo-Jo Eumerus: I was expecting that for four pictures you could afford the time to write the co-ordinates on a piece of paper. However there seems to be a simpler approach: if I right-click somewhere I get a pop-up with the co-ordinates of that point in lots of formats, including WGS-84. And those co-ordinates are copyable. --bjh21 (talk) 13:16, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I've worked with that copying. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 16:44, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

HELP! How do I upload a rejected public domain photo of Buchenwald concentration camp?

Hello, I am a newbie to Wikipedia and have just created an article on the Norwegian WW2 resistance member named Oscar Magnusson. I attempted to upload a public domain photo of Buchenwald concentration camp to this article, but it was rejected. The file name is BUCHENWALD_CONCENTRATION_CAMP_WW2.jpg and I am only using the image as a visual aid to the article about Magnusson's inspiring story of survival of multiple concentration camps during WW2. This same image was used in Magnusson book, Jeg vil level (i.e. I Will Live). Please advise on how I can upload this public domain image. Sincere thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by EngelskOversetter (talk • contribs) 11:03, 18 August 2020‎ (UTC)

UPDATE: Nevermind, I guess. I have now edited my article to include links to existing articles on Wikipedia, one of which contains the exact image of Buchenwald concentration camp that I was trying to upload as a public domain photo. Hey, this solution works fine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by EngelskOversetter (talk • contribs) 11:20, 18 August 2020‎ (UTC)

@EngelskOversetter: Is the image you are talking about among those visible at no:Buchenwald? If so, you can just re-use that in your article at no:Oscar Magnusson. Click on the image in no:Buchenwald and then on "more details" (or your language equivalent of that) in the bottom right corner to reach the file description page(for the first image in that article, that would lead you here). At the top of that page, you will find the file name, in this case File:Buchenwald Slave Laborers Liberation.jpg. Copy that and go back to no:Oscar Magnusson. In edit mode, click on Insert -> Media and paste the file name into the search box. See also en:Help:Introduction to images with VisualEditor/3 or no:Hjelp:Bilder#Innlegging_av_bilde_i_løpende_tekst if you prefer the source code editor over the visual editor. Hope that helps? --El Grafo (talk) 11:43, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

I would like to use this image https://www.peoplescollection.wales/items/8876 under this license Template:*PD-Art-two

the image page contains the following information and I'd like to know it it prevents use on Wikipedia

"COPYRIGHT DETAILS © Carmarthenshire County Museum 2020 LICENCE INFORMATION Reproduced by permission of Carmarthenshire County Museum All Rights Reserved." the image already also appears on other websites eg https://www.simonread.info/within-the-living-memory-of-the-dead/#iLightbox[76fef3a2ac31d9bb913]/0 Horatius At The Bridge (talk) 13:59, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Horatius At The Bridge, this is a case of slightly disputed law here. It's the view of Commons that digitalising old art does not constitute a new work for copyright purposes, hence you can upload the image if the painting etc if the original painting is public domain. Some entities do claim a copyright for digitalising the work, which they are indicating in this case; the view of the Commons community is that this can be ignored. You can see more details at Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag, if you are interested in the legal aspects. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 14:34, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
Many thanks Alex, my next question after following the link you provided - which template do you think is preferable in the UK? edit - I'm now thinking PD-Art tag Horatius At The Bridge (talk) 14:42, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
@Horatius At The Bridge: I would use {{PD-Art-two|PD-old-assumed|PD-US-expired}} - {{PD-Art-two}} has the same meaning as {{PD-art}}, but is used where there is a US and non US license. We don't know when the author died, but as the work was made around 1836, we can assume they'be been dead for more than 70 years, so out of copyright in the UK. Everything here also has to be public domain in the USA, but everything published before 1925 is, so PD-US-expired can also be used, giving {{PD-Art-two|PD-old-assumed|PD-US-expired}} as the full template. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 17:02, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Richard Hughes NLW Images

Am I correct in thinking the license for this image is not suitable for its inclusion in Wikicommons? If so, are you able to advise or refer me to advice about its inclusion in the wikipedia article as the only image available? I was referred to the NLW image by the author's family website as below who are supportive

"Hi XXXX I found these photos at The National Library of Wales with a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) licence. That should work for Wikipedia I think?' NLW link [7]image link Are you focused only on photos or do you do text? If I submit/update text as a relative I am supposed to go through a independent page editor rather than just use "edit", but I am not 100% sure how to do that. Thanks XXX"

I am only interested in adding an image but if you can answer their question as well I can pass it on and that would be great Horatius At The Bridge (talk) 09:25, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

@Horatius At The Bridge: You're correct: the "NC" component makes that licence inappropriate for Commons. Sometimes archives purport to put restrictive licences on public domain pictures, but these are recent enough that that's not what's happening here. I think English Wikipedia's non-free content guidelines would allow the use of this picture on English Wikipedia, though. See item 10 under en:WP:NFCI. The File Upload Wizard on English Wikipedia can guide you through uploading it. As for editing text on English Wikipedia, the conflict of interest guidelines say that people with a conflict of interest should avoid editing pages directly, but can suggest edits on the corresponding talk page. So your contact should add a section to en:Talk:Richard Hughes (British writer) beginning it with {{edit request}} and explaining what they think should be changed, and what their relationship is to the subject. If you have further questions specifically about English Wikipedia, the Teahouse or help desk on English Wikipedia are probably the places to ask (but don't ask the same question at both). --bjh21 (talk) 10:35, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you very much bjh, that advice is most helpful. I've uploaded the image as non free content and passed on your comments to my contact re their own editing. Horatius At The Bridge (talk) 12:33, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

Photos older than 70 years old, UK where author has been impossible to trace

Hello,

I have tried without success to identify the author of a black and white photograph, pre 1926 based on the content, but with no other information. What wording or procedure do I need in order to upload it to Wiki Commons are refer to it in a UK wikipedia page?

I have studied the various wiki help pages without conclusion and have no wish to break wiki or wider copyright rules.

thank you.

G.Moss --GM-- — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gedgmoss (talk • contribs) 15:11, 14 August 2020‎ (UTC)

@Gedgmoss: : In UK law, if the photographer's identity is unknown then copyright expires 70 years after the work was first made available to the public, or 70 years after creation if it was not made available to the public in that time. The copyright tag for this is {{PD-UK-unknown}}. In addition to adding the tag you should also mention the publication date, or why you believe the picture was never published, and what you've done to confirm that the author is unknown. Demonstrating that the work is in the public domain in the US is a bit trickier: I'd suggest giving us all the information you've got or staring very hard at Commons:Hirtle chart. --bjh21 (talk) 15:55, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Typically the syntax is along the lines of [[File:Example.jpg|thumb|right|Caption of your choice.]]; you can see the result of that here. See en:Wikipedia:Extended image syntax for more options than you are liable to want. Templates such as infoboxes sometimes do it differently (e.g. just image=example.jpg as a template parameter), and there is also a different, simple approach for the <gallery> feature. - Jmabel ! talk 20:52, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

The image depicts Tajuddin Ahmad, the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh, at his youth. The image is obtained from an online source. The source, however, doesn't describe any date or copyright information of the image.

Tajuddin Ahmad was born in 1925. The image seems to be taken at his mid-twenty to early-thirty, thereby in around 1950 to 1955. Does it qualify as a free domain image?

How to keep an eye on my uploads after kind of spam notifications?

The automated bots BotMultichill and BotMultichillT are currently modifying 800+ of my pictures, and I'm getting everyday unnecessary notifications for each change. Is there a way to keep surveillance of my uploads without clicking on every links? I think hundreds of other users are in the same situation. I don't want to check every data changed by these bots, but don't want to miss a disrupting edit either, later made by a vandal or a wrong user. Unfortunately I believe ignoring these links will inactivate any further notification, won't it? -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:51, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

On a related note, some users are trying to find a way for not receiving spam e-mail notifications from those bots. It seems to be a problem. Tbmdyminor musicians

How can i upload my picture, songs and biography in Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TBMDYMINOR (talk • contribs) 05:27, 16 August 2020‎ (UTC)

  • @TBMDYMINOR: This isn't Wikipedia, it is Wikimedia Commons.
  • If you are of at least some notability, Commons would be glad to have a few pictures of you. Make sure that they are appropriately free-licensed, which can only be done by the copyright holder. It is simplest if the copyright holder creates an account and does the upload themself. Typically that is the photographer; unless the image is a selfie, the copyright holder will not be the subject. If the images are previously published, and the original site of publication does not indicate a free license, you will have to go through the COM:OTRS process.
  • Neither Commons nor any of the wikipedias is likely to be an appropriate host for your songs.
  • Assuming that by "Wikipedia" you mean the English-language Wikipedia, it is not appropriate to write an article about yourself there. See their statement on conflicts of interest. If you are notable enough, someone unconnected to you will eventually get around to writing about you. If you have evidence of your own notability (articles about you -- including reviews -- in independent, reliable sources; discography; etc.), you can provide those at en:Wikipedia:Requested articles/music/Performers, bands and songwriters; that will make it much more likely that someone thinks of you as a topic worth researching. - Jmabel ! talk 15:42, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I have found this site, Military Cartridges from Mr. Jim Miles in UK, all of that is his own work, and I asked him, to put a CC Attribution-Share-Alike license on the main page, and he did it !!! 😎 My question is: can I start to upload some of those images to Commons with no risk of someone delete them ??? Thanks. --Marcric (talk) 16:16, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

  • @Marcric: We can't say "no risk" -- some image of his could have violated someone else's copyright, and unless someone goes through carefully there is no way to know -- but there is no risk of a problem for the particular issue of taking an image from that site and using the license Jim Miles grants. Looking at a few of his pages, he's probably fine in this respect, but someone would have to look at every image to say "no risk".
  • Remember to put something in the "Permission" field of {{Information}} to make it easy to see where on his site permission was granted.
  • Also, before you start, you might want to suggest to him that he should be clear what attribution he wants, and you should put that attribution on the page of each uploaded image (again, in the "permission" field of {{Information}})- Jmabel ! talk 17:09, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi @Jmabel: Could you please check if I have made it the right way ??? .54 Burnside.jpg. Thanks in advance. --Marcric (talk) 18:32, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
@Marcric: Close. I made some small changes that make that cleaner. Cleaner yet, but far more work, would be to transcribe the text and get it out of the image.
Also, I added Category:Ammunition. You'll want to refine that. - Jmabel ! talk 19:56, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
OK @Jmabel: , I will try to transcribe the text from image to description, and upload a new version of the image without the text. ✓ Done Thanks a lot --Marcric (talk) 20:07, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
I know that's a lot more work. Refining Category:Ammunition is probably less work and more important. You might want to pull the lot of these into Commons, get them well categorized, and then deal with the text at your leisure.
Also, you might want to create a "hidden" category for this site as a source. - Jmabel ! talk 20:25, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
I understand your concern about it being well categorized, but in fact, it is a specific ammunition made exclusively for the en:Burnside carbine. It was probably made in Burnside's factory, but he has a lot of subcontractors at that time... So, I think we have done our best so far. About a "hidden category for this site as a source", I don't have a clue how to do it, and how to use it. Hidden categories are those with names starting with an "!" right ??? How it could help us ??? --Marcric (talk) 22:24, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
@Marcric: "Hidden" category has nothing to do with its name. See Commons:Categories#Categories marked with "HIDDENCAT". Usefulness would just be that sometimes it's nice to easily find all the things that came from a particular source. - Jmabel ! talk 01:26, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
OK @Jmabel: , I think it is ✓ Done here: Category:Images uploaded from Military Cartridges website, or hope so. --Marcric (talk) 02:34, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
@Marcric: Excellent. - Jmabel ! talk 03:18, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

Vintage company postcards

On the page for "SS Cristoforo Colombo" I am trying to upload two company postcards of the ship from the 1950's. They are better images than what is there, were given to my grandmother (a passenger) by the cruise line as promotional material and the company is now defunct.

Can they not be uploaded? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RealDonn (talk • contribs) 00:45, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Such postcards are often out of copyright protection especially if they were published without a copyright notice. So, it is likely that they can be uploaded here. Ruslik (talk) 05:05, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Deleting a photo

Hello, I want to delete a photo uploaded in wikicommons, and have requested to delete many times and also submitted for seedy deletion. But photos are still not deleted and users remove my deletion request saying "no reason to delete". as this is against my copyrights, can you please suggest a way to delete all?

I recently uploaded this picture. I took it up from LSTV website and since it is GoI owned it should be allowed on WP as per indian copyright laws. But now, it is asking for evidence of permission. How to provide it ?--श्रीमान २००२ (talk) 08:24, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Source for image inside images

Dear help desk,

I got a notification to put the sources of the images inside an image I made myself: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pages_in_the_anatomy_of_website_design.png As i am not sure if i have updated these sources correctly, I reach out to you. Kindly let me know.

Kind regards, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Online013 (talk • contribs) 16:23, 17 August 2020‎ (UTC)

@Online013: Exactly where did you get the images you used in File:Pages in the anatomy of website design.png, and what licenses did those sources have, and (if applicable) who were their authors?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:36, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Trying to understand what I need to do here. I believe I need to apply a license tag. In exploring the copyright status of the logo, it appears the school or the original designer did not formally have a copyright. The image has been used on a number of websites and school products but does not exercise an action to those users. My intent is to use it under fair use and I agree I may have uploaded to Commons inadvertently, so I agree if it is a violation it should be deleted. Just I'm not sure how to properly use the logo in a fair use case.

Election data

moved from the talk page; I accidentally put it there at first DemonDays64 (talk) 02:53, 18 August 2020 (UTC) Election data can be pretty hard to find, and is often only found in formats that can’t be easily manipulated programmatically. I was thinking of gathering some of this data from sources to put it here in a more useful and easy-to-find format. Is there any sort of standard way to store election data on Commons I should follow to make it more consistent, or is election data not really a big thing on Commons currently? DemonDays64 (talk) 06:18, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

@DemonDays64: Election data is not really a big thing on Commons currently. For predominantly English-speaking countries, enwiki leeps it in tables in articles on elections and candidates. YMMV in the rest of the world and other language Wikipedias.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:10, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: ok, so it's not that big here; but would it be within the scope of Wikimedia Commons to put election data on here? DemonDays64 (talk) 18:11, 17 August 2020 (UTC) (please ping on reply)
@Jmabel and Jeff G.: I've started to input some at Data:Sandbox/DemonDays64/Connecticut Test.tab (will move it when done). Thanks for the help, DemonDays64 (talk) 01:05, 18 August 2020 (UTC) (please ping on reply)

Hello -- for an article about Mei Xiang the panda, I would like to add the image of the panda's ultrasound image, showing her fetus. The image is included in a press release from the Smithsonian Institution, which runs the zoo where the panda lives: https://nationalzoo.si.edu/news/veterinarians-find-fetal-tissue-giant-panda-ultrasound. I don't see any explicit restrictions or permissions on the image, but I wanted to see if anyone here had opinions. Perhaps the Smithsonian has a general copyright practice around images they publish, given that they are administered by the US government? How to delete the upload file?

Hello I uploaded some photos on this site with my name. My photos are displayed in the search and now I want to delete these photos. Please help me thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by احسان ادیب (talk • contribs) 21:14, 19 August 2020‎ (UTC)

Generally, we allow recent uploads to be deleted as a courtesy to the uploader. If you want all of your recent uploads deleted, say so here and that will happen. If you want only particular ones uploaded, put {{speedy|G7: uploader request}} on those file pages (not the "tlx" part, that is so that this on the help desk will link to the template!).
By the way, it is not clear that any of your uploads are in scope, so regardless of what you decide, someone else may want to delete all of them. - Jmabel ! talk 23:27, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

Can't upload, difficulty in editing anything generally

Whenever I try to upload anything on Commons, it doesn't upload. When I try to edit Wikipedia l, sometimes it becomes slow or gives an error about server maintenance or another issue. Thing is this has happened A LOT during the past many days. I have experienced similar issues on other wikis like Fandom.

I checked using a modem, when it showed issues then I used mobile data. Unfortunately the issues in uploading and editing occur on both connection types. What counts as a "useful or non-artistic" object?

In particular, I'd like to add an image of a warplane from some point during WW2, and think it could fall under this category, but want to make sure first. Loafiewa (talk) 19:59, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

As far as the plane itself is concerned you are right. The problem is copyright of the photo, which normally belongs to the photographer. Ruslik (talk) 20:45, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello,

My request concerns the "Category:Lady Buddha(Da Nang)". It seems that it should be deleted because Quan The Am, or Quan Am, Guanyin, Kannon, Avalokisteshvara, is a female Bodhisattva, not a Bouddha. Replacing with "Lady Bodhisattva" would not be better from a Buddhist point of view.

The 9 files attached to this category would have to be transferred to the 2 categories "Category:Ling Ung Pagoda" and "Statues of Quan Am in Viet Nam". I could make these transfers, but I prefer to ask your help because it is also a question of deleting an existing category (any deletion must be justified, and besides, you can do everything in one operation, unlike me).

I hope for your agreement. Many thanks in advance for your help.--Contributeur2019 (talk) 09:48, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

Liberalism in the United States Collage.png

I'm not sure where I would best post this, but File:Liberalism in the United States Collage.png does not appear to have been solely been Odemirense's work, given that it is a collage. At least one of the images in it, File:Paul Krugman-press conference Dec 07th, 2008-8.jpg, is under GFDL/CC-BY-SA, but no attribution is provided. Would someone be able to take a look? OTRS and previously published files

If I'm not mistaken, previously published files require verification via OTRS, right? Is there a "standard" way requesting the uploader to provide permission via OTRS? Thanks, Nyamo Kurosawa (talk) 09:46, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

@Nyamo Kurosawa: Hi, and welcome. We have {{subst:Image permission}} for use on user talk pages, normally used in conjunction with {{subst:npd}} on file description pages through the QuickDelete gadget. We also have {{subst:Unfree}}, and the User Messages gadget for delivery. In replying about photos, I typically ask users to "please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you."   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:19, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Uploading someone else's creation

I have received someone's permission to upload their creation under CC-BY-SA to WikiMedia.

When I upload the image and select "This file is not my own work.", I am asked "Now tell us why you are sure you have the right to publish this work:"

However, there's no option that describes the situation (i.e. the creator gave me explicit permission to do so).

Please advise.

How do I use this on the English wiki?

Hi I was looking through the Genoa C.F.C. kits and I found a better version for the 2011-12 season on the Italian wiki here but I can't use it on the English wiki for some reason. Is there a way to upload it to wiki commons or would I have to remake the kit entirely? REDMAN 2019 (talk) 12:00, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

These images are generated by a template, based on partial images, there is no ready-made image. The relevant template on the English Wikipedia is apparently en:Template:Infobox football club season. With the correct parameters, you should be able to achieve the same look. For an example usage, see en:2014–15 Genoa C.F.C. season. The Commons page Genoa C.F.C. kits uses a similar template, {{Football kit}}, based on the same images. --rimshottalk 12:22, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I'm trying to update the official page of my company (OVH, that changed the name to OVHcloud) in Wikipedia, and I don't know how to update the logo in the company profile with the updated one. I don't know how which kind of license I need to add for corporate logos... Any suggestions would be really welcomed. Thanks in advance! --109.190.254.58 17:10, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

  • Clearly that is complex enough to be copyrighted. Most likely the copyright is held either by the designer of the logo or by the company (I have no way to guess which, but if you are connected to the company, you should be able to find out). The only way that logo would be acceptable here on Commons is if someone is willing to grant a free license (see Commons:Licensing if you are not sure what that means). Either the company can indicate that free license on their website and you can reference that in the "Permission" field of the {{Information}} template on the file page, or (slower, but effective) they can go through the process described at COM:OTRS to provide a clear release of a license.
  • NOTE that Commons absolutely does not accept files on a fair-use basis, so the licensing is necessary to host it here. Note also that Commons would like the highest resolution available for a given image; what you uploaded is very low resolution for an image of that sort.
  • If your main concern is an article in the English-language Wikipedia, then you can leave Commons out of the picture entirely; Wikipedia does allow non-free logos for articles about companies. Those are uploaded directly to the English-language Wikipedia; Commons is not involved at all. See en:Wikipedia:Logos.
  • Also, you say "I'm trying to update the official page of my company". Usually writing or editing an article about your own company -- especially just from an IP address, without having an account -- is against policy on the English-language Wikipedia. Please see Wikipedia's policy on conflicts of interest. - Jmabel ! talk 00:25, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

WikiData infobox gets added to disambig category

After a CFD, I've made Category:Tarata into a disambiguation category. I changed the corresponding WikiData item's Commons category to Category:Tarata, Peru. Still, the Peru city's infobox keeps getting added to this category. What's wrong? --rimshottalk 20:26, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

Richiesta assistenza

Gentilissimi, Buongiorno.

--Ruthven (msg) 13:06, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

Hallo,

Hello,

I wanted to publish a page from a theater manuscript by Staffan Westerberg that is representative for his work. It is the story about a father that sneeses without holding his mouth and a funny drawing. In the beginning of the manuscript it says " A theater play for anyone who wants it, drawn and designed by Staffan". Would it be wrong to add it to the descripthon of Staffan?

Mrepoulis - Undelition request

Hello, I submitted a deletion request on August 25 and there were two responses. One asking me to to give an example of an article where my work could be included. I gave a general view of my biographical sketch and the places where my work could be included. The second response was that I had not replied and none of the administrators request were answered. Now my works are in the archival page. Please advise as to what the next step might be and specifically what more is required.

Thank you,

regards,

talk to me Hello Jeff G. An example that I found in wikipedia could be 'Contemporary classical music' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contemporary_classical_music another example for my art work could be 'Illustration' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illustration

@Mrepoulis: Hi, and welcome. I see you neglected to "give an example of an article on a Wikimedia project where your content might be of use" in your section of COM:UDR after 26+ hours, which was therefore closed as "Not done" and archived to Commons:Undeletion requests/Archive/2020-08#Request for undeletion - Content is in the academic area.... Would you care to give a specific example of an extant article now, with a link?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:08, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
@Thuresson, King of Hearts, Ankry, Green Giant, Slgrandson, Michael Bednarek, GFJ, Wutsje, George Chernilevsky, and Martin H.: In this edit, Mrepoulis wrote to me (and also wrote above) that their uploads could be used in en:Contemporary classical music or en:Illustration.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:57, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
(pinged) en:Contemporary classical music doesn't use any sound files. I don't think adding sound files from Mrepoulis would be accepted there. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 00:33, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
@Mrepoulis: We generally do not host art of non notable artists. The only exception is when the art is needed in another Wikimedia project. So we need here an evidence that either (1) you are a notable artist, or (2) there is a page in a Wikimedia project that needs your image (and none of already existent images can be used as a replacement). In the latter case only the image to be used should e undeleted. Any kind of promotion, including self-promotion is not accepted. Ankry (talk) 09:09, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
In regard to the specific examples en:Contemporary classical music and en:Illustration: these pages naturally focus on noteworthy, well-known and relevant artists. There is no evidence that Mrepoulis' work fulfills any of the relevance criteria of those pages or is in some other way helpful for them. It may also be worth mentioning that en:User:Mrepoulis has a history of self-promotion including the use of sock puppets, resulting in an indefinite ban on the English Wikipedia. would computer screenshots of newspaper archives with a link be acceptable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aias1996 (talk • contribs)

@Aias1996: it depends on the age of the newspaper article in question. As a general rule, anything older than 120 years is definitely out of copyright and fine to upload. Beyond that, it depends on the country it was published in, as anything here has to be public domain in both the origin country and the USA. There is a list of what applies to each country, with the templates to apply, at Copyright rules by territory. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 16:34, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
For the U.S., anything before 1925 is OK ({{PD-US-expired}}). Also, a lot of 1925 through 1963 cases are OK: almost no U.S. newspaper outside of New York renewed its copyrights after 28 years, which was required at the time (({{PD-US-not renewed}}). - Jmabel ! talk 17:15, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

the Boston Globe maintains an almost complete archive its entire catalog of back issues, from 1872-today, there are many photos that would be useful to wikipedia articles but is it permissible to screenshot those photos and add them to wiki commons? As I thought. So Aias1996, take that as a caution to carefully check photo credits in that Boston Globe archive, and do not use agency photos without making sure of their copyright status separately from that of the newspaper. - Jmabel ! talk 14:53, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Two superfluous versions of an image -- delete? EXIF data of the first version -- amend?

Hello experts,

I uploaded an image to w:File:Pichi_Richi_Railway_diesel_locomotive_NSU52_crosses_Saltia_Bridge,_near_Quorn,_South_Australia,_with_passenger_train_on_26_Oct_2019_(Caleb_Jenkins).jpg. An alert member of the OTRS team noticed that the EXIF data showed a different entity as the copyright owner than the one stated on the licence; the camera used for this photo was set to include his name but the copyright owner was his company. Once the copyright owner explained the difficulty of changing the camera in advance for an occasional photo possibly to be included in Wikimedia Commons, it was accepted.

All well and good. At that stage, however, I tried to change the EXIF data on the page to prevent any future confusion. However, the change didn't "stick". Version 2 of the file then appeared in the log, identical to the first.

Today I attempted to revert to the first version, thinking that the second version would be deleted. Now I know what actually happens!

Since all three images are identical, the 2nd and 3rd versions could be deleted.

More importantly, it would be very good if someone with authority could change "Copyright holder" in the EXIF data table from "Caleb Jenkins 2019" to "Caleb's Rail Films 2019". The OTRS ticket #2020080410004392 will contain the consent in those words by the authorised representative of Caleb's Rail Films.

I'll appreciate your advice. Cheers, Simon – SCHolar44 (talk) 08:30, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

  • The reason you thought the change didn't "stick" was doubtless a caching problem. In the future, when this happens, add '?purge' to the URL and, assuming you are using either Firefox or Chrome on a computer, hit CTRL-F5, and the problem will clear up 99% of the time. And if it doesn't, it's still probably a caching problem, just a very recalcitrant one.
  • If you uploaded with different EXIF data, I can promise that it "took". As I say, strictly a caching issue.
  • We don't delete old versions over this sort of thing. When we "delete" a version, it is strictly a "soft delete". All it does is to hide it so that only administrators can see it.
  • The OTRS ticket will sort out the matter. Anything else you need to say can go on the file talk page. - Jmabel ! talk 15:00, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Importing Album cover from Internet Archive

I'm sorry if this was addressed before but I didn't find anything. This album on Wikipedia is available on the Internet Archive, with full scans of the cover art. Since the Wikipedia article does not have a cover art at this time, I was hoping there was a way to import the one from the Internet Archive for use? @LOCdataLKR44: Hi, and welcome. Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image designer, photographer, or music publisher (who generally holds copyrights to a music cover) license it on their website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS because we don't allow Fair Use here. Hazel Miner issue of North Dakota Childrens Home Founder

I have a pdf of the North Dakota Childrens Home Finder (Hazel Miner issue) from January 15, 1921. It contains the story of the teenager Hazel Miner who sacrificed her own life in order to save her two siblings in a snow storm. Please see Wikipedia for details on her. The magazine issue is surely in the public domain after nearly hundred years, and I thought it would be fine to have the pdf preserved somewhere. I attest that I own the copyright on this file, and agree to irrevocably release this file to Wikimedia Commons under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license, and I agree to the Terms of Use." Monsieur YGER Charles

METTEZ MOI EN CONTACT AVEC MON CORRESPONDANT Bien cordialement. Mr YGER

@JOEL YGER: Bonjour,
Etc.

Image use

Hi. I have been given an image I would like to use in the WP article, David J. Zimmerman. I've been told by the author it has a CC license. The license appears in the metadata of the image. How can I confirm it is in fact usable in a WP article? I can post the image metadata if that helps. Thanks. VictorMooney (talk) 15:47, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

@VictorMooney: Hi, and welcome. Is the image available online? Is the author the subject? @Jeff G.: Thanks. The author is not the subject. I believe the image is posted to the authors Facebook page. Can the image be uploaded if the image metadata shows the license? Thanks again. VictorMooney (talk) 16:16, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

@VictorMooney: I think that I have never seen image metadata on Facebook that shows a license. What is the URL?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:25, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: I don't know, but I'll contact the author for that URL and get back here. VictorMooney (talk) 16:31, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: I think the questioner means the metadata with the copy he received from the author, not the metadata with a copy possibly on facebook. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:16, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
@VictorMooney: It depends on what CC license it is. "A CC license" is not specific. There are many CC licenses. Some are accepted on Wikimedia, others are not accepted. What license is it? That would be specified after "CC". -- Asclepias (talk) 13:16, 31 August 2020 (UTC)Sorry, forgot to login VictorMooney (talk) 12:39, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

@Asclepias: Hi. This is the CC license as it appears in the image metadata. <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons License" style="border-width:0" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by/4.0/80x1. I'm sure you know better than I, exactly which license this is.VictorMooney (talk) 21:40, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

@VictorMooney: Ok, it is the license {{Cc-by-4.0}} and it is accepted here. You can upload the image to Wikimedia Commons with that license and then you can use the image in Wikipedia. Assuming good faith, I guess the metadata is evidence that the author issued the license. However, for more safety, you might ask the author to send a confirmation by email (please see Commons:OTRS for details). -- Asclepias (talk) 22:13, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

@Asclepias: Good. Thanks for that.VictorMooney (talk) 22:25, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

@VictorMooney: Was this about File:Picture of David J. Zimmerman in the Indian Himalayas.jpg? If so, I see the matter was already partly resolved two days ago. But what was the meaning of "the author is not the subject"? Isn't the subject David J. Zimmerman? And the author is David J. Zimmerman? Also, there's a contradiction in the indications of the license(s). The metadata does offer the photo under the license CC BY 4.0. But you uploaded it with a different license, CC BY-SA 4.0. And the author sent a communication to OTRS with CC BY-SA 4.0. Must it be understood that the author changed his mind, decided to withdraw the CC BY 4.0 license he had offered in the metadata, and to restrict it to a CC BY-SA 4.0 license only? -- Asclepias (talk) 01:51, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

@Asclepias: The author of the picture is Zimmerman's wife, and she is the one who sent the communication to QTRS. I'm not sure now how to resolve the license discrepancy, or if it is, indeed, a problem. What do you suggest I do about that? Thanks 67.211.94.190 12:38, 1 September 2020 (UTC)67.211.94.190 12:36, 1 September 2020 (UTC) @Asclepias: Sorry, wasn't logged in...VictorMooney (talk) 12:42, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

@VictorMooney: Correct the author name on the file page. - Jmabel ! talk 14:04, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
Ah ok, thanks for the clarification, then the "author" field in the description page of the file should not indicate the name of David J. Zimmerman but should indicate the name of his wife, unless she explicitly specified that the authorship credit must not be given to her but must be given to David J. Zimmerman. About the license, I'm not sure what Commons should do. The problem comes from the fact that the author herself offered two different licenses, but we don't know what she really wanted to do. The license initially offered, "CC BY", is more free than the second license, "CC BY-SA". Maybe the author doesn't have a problem with "CC BY" and did not realize that "CC BY-SA" is not the same, and "CC BY-SA" is a mistake. Or maybe she changed her mind. We're left with the problem of having to choose to ignore one or the other license. Commons could consider that the author changed her mind and revoked the "CC BY" license. Or Commons could consider that the "CC BY" is still applicable. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:04, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Thank you. VictorMooney (talk) 14:25, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi. Please see the discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Anime eyes & red happy mouth with teeth.jpg and Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections#Prompri. Prompri has asked for two things.

  1. To have their account "nuked" and as much as possible of their personal data they have revealed in previous edits to be wiped. This would be in line with the "courtesy vanishing" guideline on English Wikipedia (w:en:WP:RTV). Creative Commons licensing gives the author the right to change how they are attributed for a work or remove their name from the credit entirely; a vanishing process similar to the one linked here would support that by hiding their identifying information from casual readers. Do we have a similar process on Commons that we can direct the user to?
  2. Advice on how their friend can claim a copyright violation on File:Anime eyes & red happy mouth with teeth.jpg to enable deletion. Prompri has stated that part of the work was created using an image produced by a former classmate without their permission, so Prompri never had the right to upload the image here. I am thinking that Commons:OTRS may be the best method for the original author to submit evidence of their creation and prove the copyright violation. Would that be right or is there another process?

Any advice you can provide would be useful. Thanks. From Hill To Shore (talk) 14:01, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Vanishing is a global process; it cannot be performed on a single wiki, so the Wikipedia guideline is advisory only here. There is no need for such guideline on Commons; they should be rather hold on meta. AFAIK, the only reason that can prevent vanishing is being blocked on some wiki. Hi, If you want to replace the image in an article in Wikipedia, it must be done there. You can display one image instead of the other in Wikipedia. On Commons, there is nothing to replace, because they are two different images, each with its information. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:39, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
More specifically: while there are occasionally reasons to upload one chart, graph, or map over another in Commons, this is almost never the case for a photo. The only time that would be appropriate is something that is unquestionably an improvement, such as a higher-resolution version of the exact same photograph, or (on your own photo, but almost never on anyone else's without their explicit agreement) a better color-balance. - 23:55, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Asclepias & jmabel- sorry, my question was about the red warnings when changing the file type on a replacement in wikipedia, not your issue I can see now. Clearly image substitution on commons was not being attempted. Horatius At The Bridge (talk) 16:39, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Simple method to extract video frames?

I recently added a few relevant videos to Commons for the first time. I am now curious if there are any tools available to extract frames from videos for use as images. It seems like this would be useful, and it would be nice to save metadata from those extractions in a manner similar to CropTool. I looked for a bit, but wasn't able to find a tool like this (in which case I'll just continue extracting video frames locally). Thanks! Jlevi (talk) 15:59, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
