First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:International_Year_of_Astronomy_2009.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you.

Hello, Jan Luca!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

CH2 suggestions

[edit]

Please see User talk:Magnus Manske#CommonsHelper2 own work improvements (couldn't find a better place). Multichill (talk) 17:31, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I notice that User:CommonsHelper2 Bot is rather often placing images in Category:Buildings by year of completion. Since that category really should contain only other categories, this is annoying. I cleared out about 60 yesterday, placing them in more appropriate categories, only to find 9 more there today. Can anything be done to stop that aspect of how this bot behaves? There seem to be some other equally inappropriate categories that it targets. - Jmabel ! talk 03:05, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

CH2 suggestion

[edit]

Hello! I have noticed that sometimes the bot formulates URLs to enwiki like this, where the plus signs should be underscores. Maybe this could be fixed? :-) Thanks for running such a useful bot, by the way. Killiondude (talk) 08:46, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

CH2: What's up?

[edit]

Hey, what's up with the bot? I really like to see it up again soon... Rehman 13:00, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So do you need help with that? Rehman 00:24, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
At moment I wait for answers to my bugzilla request ([1]).
But if you want to help (which would be nice), you can get the source code (with SVN) at http://svn.toolserver.org/svnroot/p_commonshelper2/, a overview about the changes (in SVN) you can get at http://wiki.smallbusiness-webdesign.de/index.php/Spezial:Quelltext/CommonsHelper2?uselang=--Jan Luca (talk) 09:12, 9 January 2011 (UTC)en.[reply]
--Jan Luca (talk) 09:12, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see. I would be glad to help you if you need help in anything other than codings ;) As I really have no clue on bot scripts, etc. I wish you luck on the nice CH2! Let me know if you need any admin help, will stand by. Kind regards. Rehman 10:33, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You could tell me some beta tester because I want to give only some persons (at first) the upload feature until the biggest bugs are solved. --Jan Luca (talk) 13:28, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would be very glad to help and i do know a little about coding. I updated the code from SVN, what can i do now? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 11:04, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can you send me a patch file (svn diff > abc.diff) per mail to jan@toolserver.org. --Jan Luca (talk) 06:12, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but intricacies of HTTP requests are beyond my expertise. I'll try to find someone who can help. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:42, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jan. Per this, I'd be glad to help out in testing. I somewhat frequently perform transfers from en.wiki to Commons. Rehman 12:47, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have enable the upload feature for you (your TUSC user). The link is the same: http://toolserver.org/~commonshelper2/. --Jan Luca (talk) 19:00, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, will monitor the transfers and let you know of any issues. Looking forward to see this running. :) Also, if you have the time, have a peek at the #CH2 Feature Suggestion below, it would be an awesome feature if that could be implemented. Kind regards. Rehman 01:43, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
Can i join the testing, too? I promise not to upload too much and to report all the problems.
My TUSC username is Amire80.
Thank you! --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:25, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, you should now able to transfer/upload files but I want that the tester upload much so we found the bugs so do not stop yourself ;-) --Jan Luca (talk) 12:19, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, but i still see the message: "The upload function is only to some users during the test time!" --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:01, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This means that I have some named persons which testes the tool. If you (or someone else of the small tester group) see a bug you will stop uploading and there will not be so much wrong files but if there are many persons who uploads files there can be many wrong files. Another problem is that the unknown uploader do not always report every bug but the tester should do this. --Jan Luca (talk) 14:08, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Issues, errors, and suggestions

[edit]
 • Hi again! Don't know how far it's possible, but per the current CH2 Interface, will it be possible to introduce a feature where, when entering a web link of an image on the internet in the Source-File field, the bot would fetch the file straight from whatever the site and upload it on Commons? That way, we don't have to download/re-upload images that are from the web (images like those from NASA, NOAA, ect)... Rehman 13:01, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe sometime later. At moment I want to success the upload beta. --Jan Luca (talk) 05:52, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think that I can't do this automatically because I don't know if the template is right at the place or wrong. Because of that the user should controll the description before uploading. Jan Luca (talk) 10:27, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CH2 again

[edit]

Hi! CH2 seems to duplicate license information like here File:3er-Akrobatikfigur.jpg. License information should only be added once and in one place (above Original upload log). Can you have a look? --MGA73 (talk) 21:24, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

en:File:Edward-i-farthing.jpg

[edit]

I am trying to transfer en:File:Edward-i-farthing.jpg to Commons. I get the message "Cannot get description from the text" and at the bottom i see "For manual upload, edit the above text (if necessary), save the file on your computer, then (upload it)."

The "upload it" button gets me to Commons, but if i understand correctly, i need to download the file and upload it again.

Is the automatic TUSC transfer supposed to work now? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:21, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, yes it works (see Special:Contributions/CommonsHelper2_Bot the last entrys) but in your test file the tool cannot get the description automatically so it disables the TUSC transfer (there should be an error like "Cannot upload directly because there are problem with the meta data (see above)!"). --Jan Luca (talk) 14:30, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But why can't it get the description? It sees some description and creates new text. Or does it need a particular template for description? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:35, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The tool needs the template or the description-section defined in [2] --Jan Luca (talk) 14:49, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, i added ==Summary==, and i don't see that warning anymore, but i still see only manual upload. Maybe it's because of the "The upload function is only to some users during the test time" message? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:56, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Your TUSC name is Amire80, do you write it without any spaces at the start or end because you should able to upload. Please test it again. Jan Luca (talk) 15:03, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Yes! It works now. Unlike in Wikipedia, i have to type a capital 'A'.

Now there's another problem. The "Edit the new description page" link points to http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?action=edit&title=Image:urlencode(Edward-i-farthing.jpg). The "urlencode" part is probably wrong. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 15:19, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It should be fixed now. Jan Luca (talk) 16:05, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lea nass.jpg

[edit]

Hi,

I'm trying to move he:File:Lea nass.jpg from the Hebrew Wikipedia.

I receive the messages "Cannot get description from the text" and "The upload function is only to some users during the test time!".

The TUSC username is Amire80. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 13:28, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The error "Cannot get description from the text" is fixed with changing the meta data ([3]. By the side, the whole meta data of this project should be reviewed because there is sometimes no transfer from the Hebrew names to the English ones.
The second problem I can not reproduced. Jan Luca (talk) 13:39, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hi. On the CommonsHelper 2 page there is a link called "Report a bug or suggest a feature"

I suggest linking to this talk page instead of here:

I could not figure out how to add suggestions there. And if it required registering a new account, I wouldn't have done it. Most people do not have time to figure out yet another bug reporting system.

Talk pages on the Commons are easy to use, and already understood. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:26, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the notice. I have to change the link to show a page where you can choise between JIRA (I prefer that, but it needs a account) or E-Mail (to jan@toolserver.org). --Jan Luca (talk) 18:07, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the CH2 tool. People are less likely to use email. It takes more time to use email, and there is no discussion. Also, I, like many people, prefer to keep my email address private and not connected to my Commons and Wikipedia user name. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:20, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You would prefer a contact form where you not have to use your email? --Jan Luca (talk) 14:47, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CH2. "Target file"

[edit]

I suggest "Target file (use better name)" --Timeshifter (talk) 17:32, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CH2. Does a bot change image filename on Wikipedia pages?

[edit]

I upload an image to the Commons via CH2, and change the filename while doing so. Does a bot go back and check "what links here" for the Wikipedia image, and then correct the image filename on all the Wikipedia pages to change it to the Commons filename?

Could you link to a bot that does that? I would like the link on the CH2 page. Maybe a link to en:Template:NowCommons.

Maybe you can add this to the CH2 page:

"When you are done, tag the original, Wikipedia image with the NowCommons template. Use as the syntax. For images with the same filename here and at the Commons just use . All filenames are case sensitive so make sure the resulting link actually works!"

It is from en:Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:22, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that the CH2-tool is for all Wikimedia-projects (Wikipedia, Wikibooks, ...), but your text is specially for the English Wikipedia. --Jan Luca 05:10, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

CH2. Maybe a subpage User talk:Jan Luca/CommonsHelper 2

[edit]

A subpage might be helpful in consolidating all discussion about CommonsHelper 2:

A link to the subpage from CommonsHelper 2 would make it easy for people to make suggestions, and to point out bugs, problems, and everything else. --Timeshifter (talk) 20:06, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I started these Commons pages:

Commons Helper 2 changes

[edit]

Go check on jira please. The 2 requests were there for a bit less than a month, and they should be fixed before really heavy usage of the tool in January. Ebe123 (talk) (For the English Wikipedia's MtC drives) 15:39, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CommonsHelper2 again

[edit]

I noticed this bot uploading quite a lot of files. Among these files I see quite some mistakes. I'm a bit disappointed you silently opened up this bot. This bot was already blocked twice for this behavior and will be blocked again unless you stop it. Multichill (talk) 23:19, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Multichill, have you test the tool yourself? If yes you would know that the users can check and change the description before the bot upload the file (this is different to the version that you blocked some time ago). This you have to think about, too and don't criticise only me but also the users that don't check the description well. If you want to know who transferred a file the tool add these information in the information-template.
By the way, I disabled the upload feature. At the moment I think about stopping the development of the tool because the bot is one of the core components and if it is blocked another time I see no sense of further development. Maybe I should stop my work in the Commons-community completely and go to communities where my unpaid effort to help the community is respected and not bashed with messages like yours.
Merry Christmas, --Jan Luca (talk) 11:33, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You can make a brilliant tool but if users uses it badly the result will be bad. I think that the best is that users upload with their own username. That makes it easier to find out if a user makes too much mess and should be blocked. --MGA73 (talk) 20:51, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Any idea why all the ## show up in files like File:2006MiddlesbroughInstituteofModernArtof2006 2.jpg? I noticed that this problem more often with CH2 than with CH so I was wondering if it is something you can fix? --MGA73 (talk) 08:52, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
