First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Thanks and request

Hallo Sreejithk2000, thanks for lot of work your doing here. It´s a pity that some of the pictures transferred are really low quality like File:Dita1yr1mo2x.jpg or File:Charger.PNG. At least, please don´t forget to choose at least one appropriate category or the pictures might not easily be found. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Thanks a lot and have a good time. --4028mdk09 (talk) 09:53, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

I noticed you've uploaded File:Foreign pop.png and I thought I should draw your attention to a common error.
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing!

Hello Sreejithk2000.

You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful.

This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions.

WARNING - PLEASE READ THAT

Hi. Thank you for moving all these files to Commons. However, you MUST pay attention to what you're moving and to the information on the resulting image page. For now, you're just "dumping" files from Wikipedia to Commons, and too many are missing a proper source, or licence, or permission, or are plain copyvio for several reason. It is not possible for us to have an admin 100% dedicated to your uploads. It is your responsibility to check that the files are free and documented enough to stay on Commons. If you don't take the time to do it and if your uploads remain as problematic as they are now, we will be forced to block your account. Regards, --Eusebius (talk) 07:16, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

Blocked 3 days

--Eusebius (talk) 14:25, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi. Note that you can be unblocked as soon as you tell us that you understand the principles under which your uploads have been tagged/deleted and that you'll be careful about your file moves (which should not be automatic). Regards, --Eusebius (talk) 14:16, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
To help you a used by bot to look for images with the text "non-free" and I tagged those with {{Speedy|Probably fair use (+ some reason)}}. Lets hope it finds most of the images. --MGA73 (talk) 17:33, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
I'll try to check the whole history myself (but not in a single run...). Thank you. --Eusebius (talk) 17:51, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
I understand the principles under which the images that I moved has been tagged. I was using a tool and picking images from the Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons and moving them to commons. It is nearly and impossible task to check each one of the thousands of files under this category for the quality and license before moving them and thats why I made the task automatic. Now that I have learned this is not a good approach, I will not be moving the rest of the images. --Sreejithk2000 (talk) 17:37, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I've just unblocked you. I guess noone doubts your intentions, but you can see now that moving images from WP to Commons can be problematic, and that doing it well takes some time... We are aware that the tediousness of the task is discouraging. There was nothing personal in this block, and nothing like a sanction of any kind. It was just needed because we couldn't handle the mass move. Regards, --Eusebius (talk) 17:51, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Your recent transfers from wikipedia: Categorisation (once again)

Hi, as mentioned on your user talk on June 2 and 4, 2010, please do not categorize your uploads (an example of your recent activity):

Category:Sikkim

Please save time and capacity on commons by categorizing:

Thanks for the watermark removal

From File:Charles Richmond Mitchell.jpg and File:Edith Rogers.jpg (along with any I may not have noticed). Is there any way you could give me a primer on how to do it? There are quite a few public domain images from the Provincial Archives of Alberta that I'd like to use, but I'd feel bad continually asking you to de-watermark them. I'm semi-competent at basic stuff on GIMP, if that helps. Steve Smith (talk) 20:47, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

I used Photoshop CS5 to clear the watermarks, mainly the options Content-aware delete and Healing Brush. I am not sure whether you are a Photoshop user. And I am not familiar with other tools. --Sreejith K (talk) 07:48, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Dear Sree, Why r u requesting deletion for my files, as long as it doesnt have a copyright problem and the image is freely distributed to several websites (Mallu Man Max)

Mallu Man Max, please see the image history. It was nominated for speedy deletion for another user. I converted it to normal deletion request so that other users can voice their opinion. Please go to the image deletion discussion page and claim your copyright so that the deletion request is declined. --Sreejith K (talk) 11:12, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Your recent bot-uploads referring to India : Categorisation

Hi, as mentioned in June, August and September 2010, please use 'useful' categories and don't 'over-categorize' your images, i.e. please do not categorize your uploads (an example of your recent activity):

File transfers

Hello. Nice to see that you are transferring images from ml.wikipedia to the Commons. However, many of the files you transfer are actually copyright violations: the people who uploaded then to ml.wikipedia just took the images from the Internet somewhere. Please do only transfer images that have camera-size resolution and that have EXIF data showing the camera model.

Do not transfer tiny thumbnails, or photos that have a small size.

Also, do not remove the text "transferred to Commons by User:Sreejithk2000" from the image descriptions.

OTRS-member group

Hi Bapti. I have newly joined the OTRS team and is planning to actively take part in looking after OTRS permisions. Is there a group in OTRS in commons that I should be part of? Can you help me with that? --Sreejith K (talk) 16:10, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Hello,
You should ask on Commons:Requests for rights to be part of the "OTRS-member" group (please add a link to List of accounts on the OTRS-wiki).
Cheers.--Bapti 20:11, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Done as requested and now I have OTRS-member rights. Thank you. --Sreejith K (talk) 09:28, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Please note that Category:Plantae is NOT the right category for your uploaded images. For images of plants either use the botanical (latin) name or, if this is unknown, use Category:Unidentified plants. For further instructions see Commons:Categories. -- Ies (talk) 17:20, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Starrs

RE: - http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AForest_and_Kim_Starr_01.jpg&action=historysubmit&diff=48127974&oldid=47464792 Scope? I am not sure I understand the reason for the tagging - they Pictures of the starrs and friends) seem to have been uploaded with a very large number of photos relating to scaevola in the Hawaiian islands - I would consider the happy chappy portraits a good view of the people who were photographing the scaevola photos at the same time - and as a result a valid category - the specific people related to the photographing the hawaiian scaevola's (There are some with title scaevola xxx, with people or water and not a scaevola in sight in the frame)- I am not sure If I have missed something - but that is a response from what I think i read in the tag SatuSuro (talk) 03:27, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

The text on the template {{Out of scope}} says that All content on Wikimedia Commons must be realistically usable for an educational purpose, such as to be able to be used to illustrate the subject of an article on a Wikimedia project. If you believe that this photo satisfies this criteria, feel free to remove the template.
You may also be interested in the topic Commons is not your personal free web host --Sreejith K (talk) 03:43, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

I understand both issues quite clearly thank you - it is interesting that the starrs did not upload their own images - and I simply had become irritated at seeing their names against file names that suggested photographs of people and seasides were in some way related to the plant scaevola - In the end I really dont care what happens to the images of people - In seeing it simply from my perspective - file names that say one thing and images that are not related should be corrected - one way or other - it is hardly a pressing issue in my general presence here on commons SatuSuro (talk) 04:38, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

I agree with you. Commons needs cleanup in terms of images and their filenames. Can you please put a {{Rename}} template and suggest new names when you feel that the image name has nothing to do with the content of the image? Meaningless file names are as useless as useless images. I do not think commons will encourage putting the photographers name in all his images. Also, remove the images from categories that the image does not really fit in. I think Starrs uploaded all the images in one shot adding all his images to a single category --Sreejith K (talk) 04:45, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Starrs did not upload - multichill did - Unfortunately I am very much a dabbler and not particularly systematic in commons at the moment - wp en obsessions and real life leaves me little time compared to about a year or more ago - but I take your point - if I see them - I shall indeed apply rename tags - cheers SatuSuro (talk) 04:51, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Panorama

Could you please redo this photo? The watermarks are still not removed completely. Thanks. Vearthy (talk) 16:49, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

The old one and the new one look identical to me, I can still see the watermarks (top right and bottom right corner). Can you do something with them? Thanks. Vearthy (talk) 19:50, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
I feel that is gone now. I dont know what happened with my earlier upload, looks like I forgot to save the file before upload. Now I feel the watermark has been removed completely. Can you please clear your cache and see? --Sreejith K (talk) 03:15, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

The page you linked indicated a post date of after the time the image was posted to Commons, so I've removed the tag. LFaraone (talk) 16:58, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Ok. Seems fair. --Sreejith K (talk) 17:00, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

dupe tagging

Hallo Sreejithk2000, which script do you use to do the dupe tagging? It produces wrong red links: diff.

Another thing: I have reverted your last three dupetaggings as the tagged pictures were no duplicates. They were of different resolution and color and did were not completely replaced by the other picture. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 15:57, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

I am using MediaWiki:AjaxQuickDelete.js script to tag images as duplicate. It seems that I have to add the prefix File: to the image names in the prompt but even though the edit summary has red link, the tagging seems to be proper.
I was actually thinking that photographs of the same painting can be duplicate. But since different persons took it at different times using different cameras and post processed in different softwares, they are not duplicate anymore. No worries. Thanks for the note. --Sreejith K (talk) 16:15, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! I have also enabled this gadget in my prefs - but I do not see any "dupe" button. Only nom. for deletion, copyvio, no source, ... If it is really in this script (and you did not confuse it with some other script) then we should leave a message on the talk page there. If the template works correctly without File: prefix the edit summary should be correct, too.
See Commons:Duplicate for the relevant guidelines. Cheers :-) (likes smilies, too →) --Saibo (Δ) 16:41, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Actually you need to add the dupe functionality though your vector/monobook/whichever script you are using. See mine User:Sreejithk2000/vector.js --Sreejith K (talk) 16:45, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Ah - I see. See mine now - should work like this: User:Saibo/monobook.js  ;-) I included the File: prefix. Tested at http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Wasserschloss_Mespelbrunn,_3-demo.jpg&action=history
The tags which stay longer on the file's page (like watermark and svg) should better not be placed using this script since it places them on top of the page. Looks not good for me since it is nothing important like a deletion request. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 17:58, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
